Darwin, Charles
John Murray, London, 1860. Rare second edition, second issue, in Freeman's binding variant "a" of Darwin's magnum opus. Freeman 376; Norman 594. Octavo, original publisher's green cloth. In excellent condition with the spine gilt bright, contemporary owner's signature to the title, marginalia on pages 72 and 132. A nice example. Darwin "revolutionized our methods of thinking and our outlook on the natural order of things. The recognition that constant change is the order of the universe had been finally established and a vast step forward in the uniformity of nature had been taken" (PMM 344). "Without question a watershed work in the history of modern life sciences, Darwin's Origin elaborated a proposition that species slowly evolve from common ancestors through the mechanism of natural selection. As he himself expected, Darwin's theory became, and continues to be in some circles, the object of intense controversy" (American Philosophical Society). "The five years [of Darwin's voyage on the Beagle] were the most important event in Darwin's intellectual life and in the history of biological science. Darwin sailed with no formal training. He returned a hard-headed man of science. The experiences of his five years in the Beagle, how he dealt with them, and what they led to, built up into a process of epoch-making importance in the history of thought" (PMM). Darwin wrote in his diary that all 1250 copies of the first edition, published on November 24, were sold on the first day; however, more accurately, nearly all of the edition had been sold to the trade immediately, with the … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: John Murray, 1860. CHARLES DARWIN. Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the countries visited during the voyage of H.M.SBeagle round the world, under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy R.N. Tenth thousand.London,John Murray 1860Octavo, 12.o x 19.8cm, fine original blind stamped green cloth by Edmonds & Remnants, London with their printed label, spine lettered gilt, pp.xv + (1) + 519 + 32 adverts dated December 1861, with the Postscript on p.vii, woodcuts of a lizard on p.385, outline of the Barrier Reef on p.471 and reef on p.473, a fine copy.Freeman no.20.First published separately in 1839 from vol III of Fitzroy's Narrative of the voages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle. This 1860 printing is the final definitive text. Charles Darwin's "first published book is undoubtedly the most often read and stands second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed. It is an important travel book in its own right and its relation to the background of his evolutionary ideas has often been stressed" (Freeman). Darwin noted in his autobiography that "the voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career. As far as I can judge of myself I worked to the utmost during the voyage from the mere pleasure of investigation, and from my strong desire to add a few facts to the great mass of facts in natural science. But I was also ambitious to take a fair place among scientific men The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than that of any other books."

Audubon, John James
New York: J. Bien, 1860. First Bien Edition. Near Fine. John James Audubon. Double-elephant Folio (39 9/16" x 27 1/16"; image: 37 1/8" x 25 1/2"), "White headed Eagle Falco Leucocephalus. Linn. Male. Yellow Cat-fish" (numbered in upper right "Plate 14") from The Birds of America, unwaterrmarked as issued, first-run chromolithograph with hand-coloring, J. Bien edition, 1860. For many collectors, one of the most desireable--yet affordable--plates of John James Audubon's "Birds of America" is this "White headed Eagle" IPlate 14)--our national bird--from the chromolithographed edition prepared by Julius Bien. Julius Bien was a New York printer who had mastered the increasingly popular field of chromolithography, a recent advance in print-making technology. Using a multi-stage process, he and his workers transferred colored images from Havell's original copper-engraved plates onto six or more lithographic stones. Then, to fully bring out the wonderful colors and textures of Audubon's majesterial plates, Bien employed skilled finishing and touch-up artists to add hand-drawn lithography and coloring to recreate the subtleties of the Havell engravings. The Bien edition was created between 1858 and 1860, just before the Civil War. Initial print-runs were made under the supervision of Julius Bien and John Woodhouse Audubon. When war began, however, production ceased, so that only 150 plates on 105 sheets were actually completed. The edition was undersubscribed, so John Woodhouse Audubon suffered bankruptcy. Thereafter, a few incomplete sets were printed by … [Click Below for Full Description]

Later maroon half morocco with cloth boards and gilt tooled title on the spine. The smallest photo slightly faded, but overall a very good album. Historically significant collection illustrating the Third Battle of the Taku Forts during the final stage of the Second Opium War, compiled by and portraying British military officers - the direct participants of the events. Three original albumen photos are the group portraits of the officers of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) infantry regiment of the British Army which served in China in 1860-62 and together with the Anglo-French expeditionary force sailed from Hong Kong to the mouth of the Hai River in summer 1860. Shakespeare
Virtue & Co, London: These books are in good antique condition, but do have some repairable tears on the cover. Please see photos for details and condition. Antique Leather Cover Imperial Shakespeare - Volume I & II - VERY RARE Books! These stunning Imperial Shakespeare books published by Virtue & Co. of London appear to be very rare. I have spent countless hours researching and trying to find another set like this and have not. There is no copyright or date of any kind on the inside, so I have no idea when they were published. With notes included by Charles Knight, my best guess from researching would be somewhere around 1860. There are many illustrations throughout with very fine full-page steel engravings by select artists. Leather covers are ornately decorated featuring embossed gold figure of William Shakespeare on the front and back covers. The books show some age-related wear as shown in photos. Covers have some tears. Inside pages are in very good condition. Please refer to photos for details. A very fine set of this important edition in its finest format. Volume I has 810 pages and 26 steel engravings Volume II has 778 pages and 15 steel engravings Each book measures: 11 3/4" x 15 1/4" x 3" Set weighs: approximately 25 lbs. Any questions, please ask. All sales final. Ship to USA only. Check out my other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list!

First American Edition; Harper & Bros. 1860. VG+ Published simultaneously with the London edition; first illustrated and one volume edition. Originally serialized in Charles Dickens's brand-new weekly, All the Year Round (26 November 1859 through 25 August 1860), the single-volume American edition may have preceded the three-volume British edition slightly (14 August 1860). Dickens, Charles
1860. [complete "monthly serial parts"] A Weekly Journal. Conducted by Charles Dickens. [In nine monthly parts, Parts 20 through 28.] London: Chapman & Hall, December 1860 through August 1861. Original blue printed wrappers. First Appearance of one of Dickens's best-known and most-loved novels, featuring Pip and Estella and Abel Magwitch and frozen-in-time Miss Havisham. HARD TIMES and GREAT EXPECTATIONS were the only two Dickens novels that did not appear in true serial parts; instead they appeared serially in Dickens's own periodicals, respectively in Household Words and in All The Year Round. GREAT EXPECTATIONS appeared in 36 weekly numbers of ATYR -- every Saturday from 1 December 1860 (No. 84) through 3 August 1861 (No. 119).~The weekly numbers were issued without wrappers, rather with simply a heading at the top of the first page. At the end of each month, the four or five weekly issues (depending upon how many Saturdays were in a month) were made available to the public bound up as a monthly Part -- as here, equipped with a blue printed wrapper and with various ads inserted at the front and/or rear (the final Part actually includes weekly issues through No. 123, the end of August). On the front wrapper is printed the month in which the weekly issues appeared; on the first page of the ads is printed the following month, since the monthly Parts were made available on the first of the following month. The three-volume first edition in book form was published on 6 July 1861, about a month before this serialization ended. Incidentally, HARD TIMES and GREAT EXP … [Click Below for Full Description]

You will now be much nearer to the metropolis I think.I have letters from Sweden, from engineer Wenstrom and am delighted to find that no trouble at all is experienced with the caloric engines which, by the way, are now being made in Germany to drawings stolen in this country My only consolation is that the engines building are the genuine Ericsson engines--no changes--it is the thing itself. Mr. Wenstrom states that no patent in Germany would be of any use unless every state were included which is an impracticable thing. From Spain & France, Messrs Pesant have the most encouraging accounts. The Paris manufacturer is enraptured with the new [mat?] and blowing our trumpet loudly. CHAPMAN'S NEW ZEALAND ALMANAC For Leap-Year 1860 First Year of Publication ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3/4 leather with marbled boards; 355 pages; Size Approx. 5 X 7 1/2. Published by Geo. T. Chapman, Bookseller, Queen Street, Auckland; 1860. Details: This is a nice copy of this extremely scarce almanac from New Zealand, in its first issue. The most interesting feature of it however is, a "Scribbling Diary" for the year which was written in by its original owner. On the title page is written: P. Cracroft H.M.S. Niger Auckland N.Z. There are numerous entries in the diary from January through June; nothing after that. Recorded are times of sailing and where anchored, of mail arriving from England, weather conditions (even a Hurricane!), the H.M.S. Iris which was with them some of the time, gun exercises, reference to "ugly news from Taranaki (New Plymouth)" and sailing there with a detachment of artillery, landing an armed party of Marines, field piece and rocket tube, taking possession of a post north of the town to protect it, another incident of landing "Seamen and Marines (60 all told) captured a Pah by storm, Tozer wounded together with Lieut Blake and Millard (M). killed - six in all," Caroline a schooner to be fitted for a gunboat arriving from Auckland, etc. The importance of all this is found in the fact that Peter Cr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Delano (1836-1920), who served eight terms as the Town of Ticonderoga's Supervisor and was elected twice to the New York State Assembly; and William S. Gardner, Alexander. (Abraham Lincoln)
c. 1860. Rare original painting of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. After a photograph by Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner. Scottish photographer Alexander Gardner immigrated to the United States in 1856 where he became best known for his photographs of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, and the execution of the conspirators to Lincoln's assassination. In near fine condition. In a period frame. The entire piece measures 20.75 by 16.75 inches. Rare and desirable. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War, and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America, abolished slavery, and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln began constructing his cabinet on election night and sought to create a cabinet that would unite the Republican party. His eventual cabinet would include his primary rivals for the Republican nomination and although his appointees held differing views on economic issues all were opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories of the United States. The most senior cabinet post of Secretary of State was appointed to William Seward who had recently failed to win the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Treasury was Ohio Senator Salmon P. Chase, Seward's primary political rival and the leader of a radical faction of the Republican party that sought the immediate abolition of slavery. [Attributes: First Edition]
