1860 - Photographie,Vintage albumen carte de visite, CDV The 2nd son of the 1st Baron Abinger, he was born in London and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1818, Scarlett entered the army as a cornet in the 18th Hussars and in 1830 became a major in the 5th Dragoon Guards. He married Charlotte Anne Hargreaves, a Burnley coal heiress in 1835, the town becoming his adopted home. From 1837 until 1841 he was a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Guildford. In 1840, he was appointed to command his regiment, a post he held for nearly fourteen years. In the Crimean War, the 5th Dragoon Guards formed part of the Heavy Cavalry Brigade (of which Scarlett was appointed Brigadier) and was sent to the Black Sea in 1854. There it suffered heavily from cholera in the camps of Varna. During the Battle of Balaclava on the morning of 25 October 1854, the Russians had stormed a series of hills known as the Causeway Heights beyond which lay the "Valley of Death" where the Earl of Cardigan would lead the Light Brigade in one of the great military blunders of the nineteenth century. Lord Raglan ordered that Scarlett should move eight squadrons of his brigade back to Kadikoi, to support the 93rd Highlanders defence of the British base at Balaklava. As Scarlett led his column of the Heavy Brigade across the sprawling tented camp of the Light Brigade, a Russian cavalry force of approximately 2000 was spotted just 800 yards from their left flank, at the top of the heights.[6] It seems that the Russians were also surprised by his appearance and were slow to react, but soon beg … [Click Below for Full Description]

(SMITH, John)
Simpkin, Marshall, & Co. 1860 Half title. Orig. wavy-grained cloth; sl. rubbed. Two booksellers' tickets on leading pastedown. v.g.A scientific argument for the adoption of a simple, natural and animal-free diet. Commenting on the current relationship between people and food Smith argues that 'instead of adhering to the simple diet of nature as closely as climate, the engagements of civic and social life, and other circumstances would permit, man seems to have been contriving how he could depart the furthest from it'. On the consumption of meat and fish, he notes that 'the flesh and blood of animals are entirely excluded from all preparations contained in this work, being considered unnecessary, unnatural, and frequently injurious to man'.

Ribelle, Charles de [pseud. of Rigaud, Jean-Baptiste-Amable]; Charles Vallet, illus.
Amable Rigaud (pr. by Morris et Compagnie), 1860. Uncommon volume of cautionary tales -- mixed with a few more domestic in nature -- by Rigaud, a Parisian publisher and notable children's author who also wrote La Morale en action, Histoire des animaux célèbres, Le Livre des jeunes personnes vertueuses, Les Fêtes de l'enfance, etc. These are the types of stories which encourage little boys and girls to behave themselves and obey their elders, lest they end up disfiguring themselves with fire or being mauled by a bear. The first tale is a rather bloody account of a Zouave regiment; their vivandière, Catherine la Cantinière, rushes to a soldier's aid with a bayonet of her own in one illustration, while another battlefield scene is depicted complete with a chopped-off head lying in the foreground. A total of => eight hand-colored full-page lithographs by Charles Vallet illustrate the stories; in addition to the two mentioned above, other images show Mlle. Hermine with her two nicely dressed pupils, a naughty young lady pretending to be a ghost to scare her friend, and spectators gawping at a bear in a zoo. Quérard (La France littéraire, vol. XII) claims that this work was first published in 1859, but no examples of any such appearance are found by WorldCat; if the present example is not the first printing, it is certainly a very early one. Provenance: Front pastedown with inked inscription: "Duchess of Somerset [/] 1875" (presumably Margaret Shaw-Stewart Seymour, widow of the 11th Duke of Somerset, d. 1880). Most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. How … [Click Below for Full Description]

HATS
A Catalogue of Hat Labels. c. 1860 - 1900. 4to. 310 x 280mm. A scrapbook collection of over 250 original hatter's labels and stamps. The crude canvas covers are worn and the delicate thin paper internally is chipped and worn. The examples are numbered 1 - 228, then 200 - 272, most pasted onto the rectos only: there are a few gaps from obvious losses and some where there never appear to have been an example inserted. The numbering system suggests that there may have been an index at some time but this is not present; many can be identified from names or designs. Hatter's labels and stamps would have been pasted or stamped inside the hat, either by the hat mould maker or the finisher or milliner. This is and extensive collection of mostly late nineteenth century examples and appears to have been started by a member of the Vero family, hatters of Atherstone, Warwickshire from the mid-nineteenth century. There are a few examples from Vero and Everitt, but the vast majority from other makers in England, North and South America, Continental Europe and even a few examples from India and the far East.

Artist: Willmore A ca ; issued in: London; date: ca1860 - - technic: Steel engraving; - colorit: gouache; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 19,5 x 25; - description: Decorative view of Gaza in Israel in the 1860ths. Under the Romans and later the Byzantines, Gaza experienced relative peace and its port flourished. In 635 AD, it became the first city in Palestine to be conquered by the Rashidun army and quickly developed into a center of Islamic law. However, by the time the Crusaders invaded the city in the late 11th century, it was in ruins. In later centuries, Gaza experienced several hardships?from Mongol raids to floods and locusts, reducing it to a village by the 16th century, when it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. During the first half of Ottoman rule, the Ridwan dynasty controlled Gaza and under them the city went through an age of great commerce and peace. The municipality of Gaza was established in 1893.

Emmett, Daniel.
Very Good. Pamphlet. 4to 11" - 13" tall; [African-Americana][Minstrelsy][Civil War] New York: Firth, Pond & Co. , [1860]. First authorized edition, later issue. 13” x 10”. Three leaves. Very good: removed from a larger volume, evenly toned with a few spots of soiling. First authorized edition, later issue, of the anthem of the Old South. Dixie was first performed as part of a minstrel show in April 1859 in New York City. A year later it was performed by a different troupe in New Orleans, and quickly became popular. On April 9, 1860, the first of a few issues of a pirated edition was published there, initially barely resembling Emmet's work but getting more like it with each subsequent issue over the following ten days. .
