CHINA: TAIPING REBELLION] BRINE, Lindesay
Yantai, Shandong Province, China. Watercolour, 230 x 380 mm, signed and dated ("Lindesay Brine fecit June 22 1860"); mounted. An attractive and skillfully executed drawing heightened with watercolour. Two Chinese figures carrying baskets have been sketched in the foreground but have not been finished. A European ship and numerous ships either sail or ride at anchor off a promontory hill, probably Tengchow (now Penglai), one of the treaty ports opened for foreign trade following the 1858 Treaty of Tianjin.Lindesay Brine, who entered the Royal Navy in 1847, was the author of "The Taeping Rebellion in China; a narrative of its rise and progress, based upon original documents and information obtained in China" (London: Murray, 1862). This watercolour was made on the spot during his service as commander in the China Seas. The painting is captioned in ink on the image: "HMS Gunboat Opossum - Junk by Chefoo - The French Troops are Encamped on the Hill." "While serving in the Far East, [Brine] took much pains to collect accurate information on the troubles then prevailing, and in 1862 published the results of his observations and inquiries in a volume entitled 'The Taiping Rebellion in China'" (Obituary in The Geographical Journal 27,3 (March 1906). Boston, July 25, 1860. 1 p., 5 x 8 in. Complete Transcript-or, better still, joining hands together, the new States shall become as a zone of Freedom about the slave States, -radiant, like the ancient cestus of Beauty,[1] with transforming power.Charles SumnerBoston 25th July '60.Historical BackgroundAfter being savagely beaten on the Senate floor, Charles Sumner was finally able to return to the Senate three years later, in 1859. His first speech following his return was "The Barbarism of Slavery," delivered on June 4, 1860. Five weeks later, he spoke to a meeting of the Young Men's Republican Union of New York.Four and a half months earlier, Republican Presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln had spoken at the same place in his famous Cooper Union speech that launched him into national prominence. In Chicago, the Republican Party had selected Lincoln as its presidential nominee, and the 1860 presidential campaign began in earnest.Sumner's July 11 speech was widely circulated in the Tribune, Times, Herald, and World, along with a pamphlet edition of more than fifty thousand copies. Senator William H. Seward wrote to Sumner, "Your speech, in every part, is noble and great. Even you never spoke so well." This document is a quotation, written and signed for an admirer, from near the end of Sumner's fiery speech delivered two weeks earlier. Mesilla, Arizona Territory Under Confederacy: Mesilla Times. , OCLC reports the only known copy of a dozen issued is at the Rio Grande Historical Collection an New Mexico University Library. According to Martin Hardwick Hall, the Messila Times was founded in 1860 and lasted only for a year and a half since its owners Robert P. Kelley and D.W. Hughes were placing their all their interests into mining and real estate in the area. (The Mesilla Times went out of business in the Spring of 1862). The Territory lay south of Jornada del Muerto and the Gila River (roughly the Gadsen Purchase) and was called "Arizona." It needs to be kept in mind that this was the Arizona Territory under the Confederacy and not that which Lincoln established in 1863 under the United States. The certificate is signed by President Sam'L J. Jones and Secretary James A. Lucas. It has a vignette of an allegorical Indian woman and printed in blue ink with a blue border on paper measuring 4" x 10 1/2". There are a number of fascinating aspects of this mining venture. First, it was originally owned by two Mexican investors but their claims were invalidated by the Gadsen Purchase. Second the original claim owner was William Claude-Jones (who along with Governor Goodwin and Coles Bashford) were signers of the first Arizona legislation in 1864. Claude-Jones also was noted later in Michener's Rascals in Paradise where his predilection for pre-pubescent girls continued. Third, Sylvester Mowry who was a Southern sympathizer (and briefly jailed in 1862 by Union troops) was a vital part of the company. Commissioner … [Click Below for Full Description]

1860 - Photographie,Vintage albumen carte de visite, CDV The 2nd son of the 1st Baron Abinger, he was born in London and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1818, Scarlett entered the army as a cornet in the 18th Hussars and in 1830 became a major in the 5th Dragoon Guards. He married Charlotte Anne Hargreaves, a Burnley coal heiress in 1835, the town becoming his adopted home. From 1837 until 1841 he was a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Guildford. In 1840, he was appointed to command his regiment, a post he held for nearly fourteen years. In the Crimean War, the 5th Dragoon Guards formed part of the Heavy Cavalry Brigade (of which Scarlett was appointed Brigadier) and was sent to the Black Sea in 1854. There it suffered heavily from cholera in the camps of Varna. During the Battle of Balaclava on the morning of 25 October 1854, the Russians had stormed a series of hills known as the Causeway Heights beyond which lay the "Valley of Death" where the Earl of Cardigan would lead the Light Brigade in one of the great military blunders of the nineteenth century. Lord Raglan ordered that Scarlett should move eight squadrons of his brigade back to Kadikoi, to support the 93rd Highlanders defence of the British base at Balaklava. As Scarlett led his column of the Heavy Brigade across the sprawling tented camp of the Light Brigade, a Russian cavalry force of approximately 2000 was spotted just 800 yards from their left flank, at the top of the heights.[6] It seems that the Russians were also surprised by his appearance and were slow to react, but soon beg … [Click Below for Full Description]

(SMITH, John)
Simpkin, Marshall, & Co. 1860 Half title. Orig. wavy-grained cloth; sl. rubbed. Two booksellers' tickets on leading pastedown. v.g.A scientific argument for the adoption of a simple, natural and animal-free diet. Commenting on the current relationship between people and food Smith argues that 'instead of adhering to the simple diet of nature as closely as climate, the engagements of civic and social life, and other circumstances would permit, man seems to have been contriving how he could depart the furthest from it'. On the consumption of meat and fish, he notes that 'the flesh and blood of animals are entirely excluded from all preparations contained in this work, being considered unnecessary, unnatural, and frequently injurious to man'.

Ribelle, Charles de [pseud. of Rigaud, Jean-Baptiste-Amable]; Charles Vallet, illus.
Amable Rigaud (pr. by Morris et Compagnie), 1860. Uncommon volume of cautionary tales -- mixed with a few more domestic in nature -- by Rigaud, a Parisian publisher and notable children's author who also wrote La Morale en action, Histoire des animaux célèbres, Le Livre des jeunes personnes vertueuses, Les Fêtes de l'enfance, etc. These are the types of stories which encourage little boys and girls to behave themselves and obey their elders, lest they end up disfiguring themselves with fire or being mauled by a bear. The first tale is a rather bloody account of a Zouave regiment; their vivandière, Catherine la Cantinière, rushes to a soldier's aid with a bayonet of her own in one illustration, while another battlefield scene is depicted complete with a chopped-off head lying in the foreground. A total of => eight hand-colored full-page lithographs by Charles Vallet illustrate the stories; in addition to the two mentioned above, other images show Mlle. Hermine with her two nicely dressed pupils, a naughty young lady pretending to be a ghost to scare her friend, and spectators gawping at a bear in a zoo. Quérard (La France littéraire, vol. XII) claims that this work was first published in 1859, but no examples of any such appearance are found by WorldCat; if the present example is not the first printing, it is certainly a very early one. Provenance: Front pastedown with inked inscription: "Duchess of Somerset [/] 1875" (presumably Margaret Shaw-Stewart Seymour, widow of the 11th Duke of Somerset, d. 1880). Most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. How … [Click Below for Full Description]
