1860. An extremely rare collection of the sermons and written works of 19th century British preacher and social reformer Frederick Denison Maurice, the man who may be more influential in the development of George MacDonald's theology than any other individual. Maurice was also responsible for MacDonald's conversion to the Church of England in the early 1860s. In this 17-volume clothbound set from the late 1800s is illuminated many of the points of theology and scriptural exposition that influenced MacDonald and that later found their way into MacDonald's own written corpus. A rare and singular set from the man whose life made up the literary and spiritual soil in which grew the root system of George MacDonald's own faith during the formative years of the 1850s and 1860s. Bonus biography of Maurice by Florence Hingam also included.

FIRST TAUCHNITZ AND FIRST COPYRIGHT EDITION IN A GIANNINI BINDING. Italy was the site of this, one of Hawthorne’s most popular books. Of it, the writer said, "No author, without a trial, can conceive of the difficulty of writing a romance about a country where there is no shadow, no antiquity, no mystery, no picturesque and gloomy wrong, nor anything but a commonplace prosperity, in broad and simple daylight, as is happily the case with my dear native land. It will be very long, I trust, before romance-writers may find congenial and easily handled themes, either in the annals of our stalwart republic, or in any characteristic and probable events of our individual lives. Romance and poetry, ivy, lichens, and wall-flowers need ruin to make them grow." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882)
New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1860. Octavo. 432pp., plus folding lithographic diagram. With the half-title. Light foxing. Publisher's green grained cloth, covers blocked in blind, spine in gilt, brown endpapers (expert repair at head of spine). Housed in a green morocco backed box. Provenance: Benjamin Lincoln (contemporary signature) The first American edition of one of the most influential books ever published. Freeman calls Darwin's magnum opus "the most important biological book ever written" (Freeman), whilst Dibner writes that it is "the most important single work in science" (Heralds of Science). "What the dropping of the first atomic bomb was to the twentieth century, the publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species was to the nineteenth century. Battle lines were drawn on both religious and scientific grounds" (Heirs of Hippocrates). "As many more individuals of each species are born than can possibly survive; and as, consequently, there is a frequently recurring struggle for existence, it follows that any being, if it vary however slightly in any manner profitable to itself, under the complex and sometimes varying conditions of life, will have a better chance of surviving, and thus be naturally selected. From the strong principle of inheritance, any selected variety will tend to propagate its new and modified form." (Introduction p.12). The first edition of On The Origin of Species was published in London on 24 November 1859. In total 1250 copies were printed, but after deducting presentation and review copies, and five for Stationers' Ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

No publication information given, ca. 1860s. Cloth-backed, hand-colored pictorial boards with title printed in German, Russian, English, French, Spanish, and Italian. Six hand-colored plates with movable features controlled by paper tabs extending from the bottom of the page. Two plates lacking the tabs, the others not perfectly operational, one plate appears to lack a movable piece. The illustrations include partygoers playing musical instruments; children swinging on a large scale; a baby being wheeled in a pram; children playing pirates, and a man sharpening an axe on a grinding wheel as two children look on. (The sixth is a man probably meant to be hoisting something up with a rope, but this is the one for which a part or parts are lacking and the exact subject is unclear). We find no record of this title in OCLC but there is one copy of a book called "Ernst & Scherz, Bwegliche Bilder für artige Kinder," which also has titles in six languages and six plates with movable features, likely by the same publisher, identified in OCLC (though not, apparently, in the book itself) as G. Löwensohn of Fürth. Löwensohn did print many movable books, but whether this is one of them we cannot say with certainty.

ANONYME
Album of five Japanese erotic paintings, anonymous.Acordon binding, can unfold completely and expose the five paintings. Very thick cardboard imitating the rigidity of the wood, the paintings on paper were laminated on the cardboard. Coated on the upper and lower plate of a fuchsia leather added to the twentieth replacing the original fabric. Old yellow label with handwritten title in Indian ink. Small speckles scattered on the paintings.the five paintings put five couples into action in tight shots, most of them without furniture or other decor, like Koyushi for example. The palette uses green, yellow, red and blue in pastel shades. The whole is painted in line, in a rather mannerist and naive way, limbs languid in delicate expressions. The whole obeys the canons of the representation of shunga (Japanese erotic prints) with happy and fulfilled characters, with particularly exposed sexes, the male member still turgid and fat. Kimonos offer contrasting colors and patterns (geometric, flowers or leaves). The date of 1860 is only a proposal, the collection may be later, around 1880. However, several criteria make us look for an execution at the end of the Edo era. This type of collection was anonymous most of the time because of censorship. At the beginning of the Meiji era, the attraction for erotic photography supplanted the shunga. Some painters specialized in the production of shunga, and it is not uncommon to meet the same scenes in various collections.1860 12x18cm autre

(Albany Law School) Colony, Horatio
[Albany: 1860]. 62 vintage albumen prints, comprising 60 oval gem portraits (1-1/2 x 1 inches), 1 larger oval portrait (2-1/8 x 1-5/8 inches) and 1 full-length (3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches). 2 vols. 8vo. Early Albany Law School Photographic Yearbook. A photographic yearbook from the Albany Law School class of 1860, assembled by student Horatio Colony (1835-1917). Opened in 1851, Albany Law School is the oldest independent law school in the United States. Many of its students in the 1850s and '60s became prominent lawyers and judges. As is the custom with the professionally produced college photograph yearbooks produced by George Kendall Warren starting in the late 1850s, each photograph is inscribed beneath by the sitter with his name and hometown. The album opens with professors Ira Harris, Amasa Parker, Amos Dean, Nathaniel Harris, and Levi Chamberlain. Some notable students include Alexander P. Ketchum, who became a Colonel and Chief Appraiser of the Port of New York; Clayton H. Delano (1836-1920), who served eight terms as the Town of Ticonderoga's Supervisor and was elected twice to the New York State Assembly; and William S. Opdyke, general counsel of the Delaware and Hudson Company. Horatio Colony (1835-1917), whose picture appears last and is unfortunately obscured by damage, assembled this album. The photograph of Levi Chamberlain is inscribed to "Horatio, friend and pupil." He was admitted to the bar in New Hampshire and New York in 1860; in 1869 he, along with his brother George, took over the management of the family business, the Faulkner and Colony Woolen Mill. [Stocking (1816-1872), DeLafayette]
Roma: 1860. Written in very fine ink, circa 600/800 words per page. 8vo. The loose leaves bear no name, but it opens with Stocking reporting rounds to various offices for papers required to enter Rome, then under French control. Stocking's thoroughness here allowed his identification, as a check of U.S. Consular reports from Naples show just one visa application of any sort on February 14th - that of DeLafayette Stocking, for Rome. DeLafayette Stocking (1816 - 1872) was the second child of the Rev. Solon Stocking of Binghampton, New York. Despite the apparent level of seriousness displayed in the diary, DeLafayette came from a family prone to light-heartedness, at least in the choice of names; his father was one of eleven children with names each starting with the letter "S". In DeLafayette's generation, all nine children had names starting with "D". The family is perhaps more notable for including Captain Abner Stocking, a sea captain who fought at Bunker Hill and later sailed a Revolutionary privateer. He was DeLafayette's great grandfather. (See C. Stocking - "THE STOCKING ANCESTRY", 1903). Stocking is not unhappy to leave Naples, fed up in particular with over-eager carriage drivers, but he does look back from the deck of the steamer at the Neapolitan panorama with some pleasant memories. With gentle irony he describes the petty fees, the jostling of porters, the complexities of baggage clearance at Civita Vecchia, the passengers with ten small bundles each, suggesting the hassles of travel with good nature. Stocking's style throughout is candid. As he approaches Rome, … [Click Below for Full Description]
