A collection of letters originally published in the Saturday Courier, 1853-54; "an answer to 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' a defense of the region [Ingraham] loved and of the people in it. Spofford, Harriet (Elizabeth) Prescott.]
J. E. Tilton and Company, Boston, 1860. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [ix-x] [9-11] 12-352 [353-356: ads], flyleaves at front and rear, original purple cloth, front and rear panels ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold and blind, brown coated endpapers. First edition. The author's anonymously published first book. "The plot is reminiscent of Poe, for Sir Rohan's ghost is the memory of a woman whom he had wronged, tired of, and tried to kill, but who has left a daughter with whom he fell in love." - Quinn, American Fiction, p. 208. "The story is a delicate mixture of moral gilt and brooding terror not unlike the Gothic shading of one of her mentors in the art of moralized Gothic, Nathaniel Hawthorne. The ghost who victimizes Sir Rohan is both a real Gothic phantom and the symbol of his own betrayed conscience; it is the phantom of sinful memory not to be denied and always on hand to remind him of a terrible crime concealed. His crime, like that of Dimmesdale in THE SCARLET LETTER, involves sexual incontinence and concealment. Each time Sir Rohan attempts to settle into some kind of happiness, the ghost intervenes to ruin his bliss. After retiring to his manor in Cornwall, Sir Rohan is visited by an old friend, St, Denys, who brings with him his beautiful ward, Miriam. When Sir Rohan and Miriam fall in love, the stage is set for Gothic justice. Miriam is the child of his original sin for which the ghost has long pursued him. If he persists in his love for Miriam -- and he cannot help doing so -- then the punishment of incest awaits him. Entrapped within this moral labyrinth, … [Click Below for Full Description]

This journey was the most important event in Darwin's intellectual life. The appearance of this record was a turning point in the history of biological science and marked the beginnings of a whole new conception of the origin of the various species of life on earth.

Friend, Washington F.
[Fort Putnam, N.Y., 1860. Watercolor on paper, 9 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches. Laid down on modern card, matted. Signed in lower left corner: "W F Friend." Colors clean and fresh. In fine condition. A fine watercolor by Washington F. Friend of the Hudson River as seen from Fort Putnam. A single figure in a red coat in the foreground provides scale as well as a touch of contrast to the predominant brown, blue, green, and grey tones used to portray the river and surrounding woods and hills and a partially cloudy sky. Several ships can be viewed on the Hudson and a village across the river is also depicted. In the foreground on the right side can be seen part of a brick wall, perhaps part of the fort's fortification. Friend (circa 1820-86), a painter and topographic artist who specialized in watercolors, is particularly well known for his work in the American West. "After failed business, he became an itinerant artist, sketching in Utah, California, Colorado, and Montana and painted a panorama which was exhibited in Canada and the eastern U.S." - Falk. Following a three-year journey through the western United States and Canada, Friend displayed his work in panoramic form as one element in a theatrical event which included music and recitations. The show toured in the northeast and England. Upon his return to the United States, he continued to paint and exhibit his work. A fine mid-19th-century watercolor view of the Hudson River as seen from the West Point area. Falk, WHO WAS WHO IN AMERICAN ART, 1564-1975 I, p.1202. Hughes, ARTISTS IN CALIFORNIA, p.192.

Darwin (Charles Robert)
John Murray, 1860. with a folding diagram facing p. 117, occasional minor spotting, one or two pages with minor fraying, or minimal dust stain at fore-edge, pp. ix, [i], 502, 32 (ads dated January 1860), 8vo, original cloth (Freeman's variant a), minor wear to extremities, but still a good copy, with the ownership inscription of W.B. Dawkins, Weston Zoyland Vicarage (see below), and tipped in between the title-page and the first page of Contents, an ?off-printed extract from John Fiske's Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy, with the drop-head title of 'Darwinism Analyzed', this foxed and sometime folded, as if sent in a letter. Second edition, second issue ('Fifth Thousand' and 1860 on title-page: a very few copies are known with 1859).'The most important book of science ever written. Indeed, given its importance to all of humanity and the rest of life, it it the most important book in any category. No work of science has ever been so fully vindicated by subsequent investigation, or has so profoundly altered humanity's view of itself and how the living world works. The theory of natural selection continues to gain relevance to the things that matter most to humanity - from our own origins and behaviour to every detail in the living environment on which our lives depend. Little wonder that the adjective "Darwinian", sometimes lowercased to "darwinian" as a tribute to its fixity, far outranks "Copernican," "Newtonian," and "Mendelian" in frrequency of usage' (Foreword to the Cambridge Companion to the "Origin of Species"). Full Morocco. Very Good. Fabulous collection of army caricatures, as well as actual photos of many of the soldiers and officers. The artwork has an inimitable naive, folk art-ish and outsider art-ish quality that is simply captivating. Even with the captions mostly unreadable by us written as they are in an indecipherable Suettelin Schrift, the humor and narrative generally comes through very clearly. The artwork is mostly focused on the soldiers' lifestyle -- hunting, womanizing and wooing, drinking and carousing, day to day activities, and other than their being in uniform mostly, relatively light on actual military matters. Early 1860s, before Austria lost much of Northern Italy. Oblong. 23.5 by 29 cm. 67 pp. with content. First, 22 pp. of photos, with 82 photos in all, with all but two individual oval portraits. Then 35 pp. of painted caricatures, containing 40 mounted pieces, one of which has a fold-out and thus is larger than the page, a few are full page size, and several form multi-part narrative series, like a cartoon strip. About half of these are thickly or thoroughly painted, while the rest may have a combination of pencil and watercolor, and simple or no background to the drawn human figures. 8 pp. of portraits, one painted, the others, drawn with pencil or printed. 2 pp. of mixed media photo caricatures (16 such caricatures, which generally have photo imaged heads combined with drawn bodies, all of which is contained in a photo image). Huxley, Thomas Henry
Williams and Norgate, London. [8], 159pp., plus 8 pp. publisher's ads. 222 x 143 mm. Original cloth, shaken, light edgewear. Minor foxing but very good. First edition, second issue advertisements. Huxley earned the nickname "Darwin's bulldog" for his outspoken defense of the theory of evolution through natural selection, particularly as it pertained to man. The present work grew out of the famous hippocampus minor controversy of the early 1860s, in which Huxley publicly challenged the taxonomist Richard Owen's claim that man's brain differed qualitatively from those of all other mammals. Through a series of dissections of primate brains, Huxley disproved Owen's assertions that only man's brain possessed a hippocampus minor, and demonstrated that the differences between men and apes were smaller than those between apes and the lower primates. SEITZ, Adalbert.
Nissen, ZBI, II 3799 Nb. First edition of the French translation of an extensive and beautifully illustrated butterfly encyclopeadia, edited by the German entomologist Adalbert Seitz (1860-1938) who specialised in Lepidoptera. The encyclopeadia can be divided into 4 parts: butterflies of the Arctic, American, Indo-Australian and African regions. Its objective was to illustrate every butterfly and macro-moth in the world. Seitz was director of the Zoological Garden and departmental chief of the Senckenberg museum, both in Frankfurt. It was his intention to finish the whole encyclopeadia by 1912, which proved to be quite unrealistic, and the publication was stopped and delayed due to both the World Wars. Eventually the publication of the encyclopeadia was abandoned in 1954, leaving the encyclopeadia unfinshed behind. In very good condition and nearly complete, lacking some text leaves and plates, with some pencil notations and a few leaves detached from bookblock. 'There he set up a branch of the anti-slavery society, ... and established contact with all British consular agents in north Africa, becoming a warm friend of Colonel Hanmer George Warrington, consular-general in Tripoli and a particular enemy of the slave trade. Having heard that, under British pressure, the bey of Tunis had agreed to stop the export of slaves from Tunis and the public sale of slaves there, Richardson travelled there in 1842 to present him with a petition of lavish praise (cited in the Anti-Slavery Reporter, 23 March 1842, 45). In 1843 he set off on a mission to gather statistics on slavery for the anti-slavery society and to persuade the sultan of Morocco to reject slavery' (ODNB).
