[Abaiang printing].
Content is in the Gilbertese (Kiribati) language, printed in the Republic of Kiribati, formerly known as the Gilbert Islands, located in the central Pacific. The island were until the second half of the 20th century a British domain. This pamphlet is the first hymnbook printed in the Gilbertese language. Hiram Bingham II, a protestant missionary to the Hawaii and Gilbert Islands, is credited with the first translation of the Bible into the Gilbertese language around 1857. The location of publication, Abaian, is likely referring to the island "Abaiang," located in the northern part of the Kiribati Islands, where Bingham first arrived. A rare imprint with only six copies found in institutions, all of which appear to be microfilms of the later edition, rather than the original edition.

AUCTION CATALOGUE: SAUVAGEOT, Charles)
xxxi, 175 pp. 8vo, cont. purple cloth-backed marbled boards (extremities slightly rubbed). Paris: L. Potier, 1860. An uncommon auction catalogue. Sauvageot (1781-1860), violinist at the Opéra de Paris and famous collector of the decorative arts, donated much of his art collection to the Louvre, greatly augmenting their holdings. From Le Roux de Lincy's valuable biographical sketch, we learn that Sauvageot bought primarily from De Bure, Crozet, Techener, and Potier. The library was particularly rich in early French books, especially literature and history; there are some early manuscripts as well. Fine copy. 1691 lots. Bookplate of Eric Speeckaert. Gould, John.
c1860., London: 1860 - Folio (14" x 21"), colored lithographed bird plate. Slight toning; overall bright and colorful. John Gould (1804-1881) was born in Dorset, and spent his early career years as a taxidermist. By the late 1820s he entered the publishing business, and privately published his first publication that included folio sized bird plates (A Century of Birds Hitherto Unfigured from the Himalaya Mountains). The work appeared in twenty monthly installments. This work launched a fifty-year career that would pretty much use the same format for his future publications. This plate is probably plate number three from the Birds of Europe. ODB. Gould's Works on Natural History: Index.

DARWIN, Charles
D. Appleton and Company. With 1 folding lithographed plate. Our copy, which is in excellent condition, is bound in the original blind-stamped publisher's cloth, spine a bit faded. First American edition, first issue (with the two quotes on the verso of the half-title). Darwin's Origin is the most important biological book ever written. He was extremely keen that his ideas be disseminated as widely as possible. In January, 1860, Asa Gray arranged for the American publication, the first of which was completed in February. Twenty-five hundred copies were printed; three further printings were completed during 1860. For the specific issue points, see Freeman, p. 83.

DOMENECH, Emmanuel H.
(). DOMENECH, Emmanuel H. Seven Years' Residence in the Great Deserts of North America.... London, 1860. Two volumes. xxiv, 445; xii, 465pp. plus many lithographic plates (some tinted), and colored folding map. Leaf of ads in each volume. Original gilt cloth. A couple of corners slightly bumped. Frontispiece in volume one detached. Small tear to map. Bright handsome set. 19th-century school prize bookplate. Very good. Howes D-410. Wagner-Camp 356:1. Wheat Transmississippi 1008. Graff 1121. Pilling 1061. Abbey 664. Clark III:33305. Sabin 20554. Although Domenech visited the Southwest, he has never been granted much credence as an observer. The plates and maps are largely lifted from other sources, and the author has been criticized for his inaccuracy as an ethnologist. Still, this is an interesting narrative of travels, including much material on the Indians of the region. Wheat finds this map of interest for its marking of the Oregon Trail.

Dean & Son, (London), 1860. Octavo. (6)ff. A collection of hand-colored engravings accompanied by rhyming stories about fictional people. Each story adopts a humorous tone, though some also bear moral lessons. Throughout its nineteenth-century lifespan, the publishing firm of Dean and Son specialized in innovative printing processes used in the creation of children's materials. Particular contributions included lithographic printing, pop-up elements, and other moveable features. This present volume's illustrations exemplify the same precision featured in other Dean publications. The hand-coloring is professionally done and features a color palette uncommonly broad for a children's book. Bound in paper wrappers, with previous owner's signature on front. Pages lightly foxed, blank pages show color bleed, minor wear and soiling to extremities, stitching coming loose, and wrappers split along part of spine. A very good copy of a book that would have been heavily used. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

DARWIN, Charles
London: John Murray, 1860.. Second edition, tenth thousand. 8vo. (xvi), 519, (1) pp. Contemporary prize binding from Rugby School, dark green full calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered red label, the college crest in gilt to the upper board, endpapers and all edges marbled. Vignettes in the text. A little wear to the head of the spine, small and fairly inconspicuous scuff to lower board, an attractive copy. "It is impossible to overrate the influence of the voyage on Darwin's career: it was both his education and his opportunity. He left England untried and almost uneducated for science, he returned a successful collector, a practised and brilliant geologist, and with a wide general knowledge of zoology gained at first hand in many parts of the world" (DNB). The lessons learnt and specimens taken around the world led directly to "The Origin of Species" 20 years later. Freeman, 20 - "Final definitive text"
