Albany Law School) Colony, Horatio
[Albany, 1860. 62 vintage albumen prints, comprising 60 oval gem portraits (1-1/2 x 1 inches), 1 larger oval portrait (2-1/8 x 1-5/8 inches) and 1 full-length (3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches). 2 vols. 8vo. Early Albany Law School Photographic Yearbook. A photographic yearbook from the Albany Law School class of 1860, assembled by student Horatio Colony (1835-1917). Opened in 1851, Albany Law School is the oldest independent law school in the United States. Many of its students in the 1850s and '60s became prominent lawyers and judges. As is the custom with the professionally produced college photograph yearbooks produced by George Kendall Warren starting in the late 1850s, each photograph is inscribed beneath by the sitter with his name and hometown. The album opens with professors Ira Harris, Amasa Parker, Amos Dean, Nathaniel Harris, and Levi Chamberlain. Some notable students include Alexander P. Ketchum, who became a Colonel and Chief Appraiser of the Port of New York; Clayton H. Delano (1836-1920), who served eight terms as the Town of Ticonderoga's Supervisor and was elected twice to the New York State Assembly; and William S. Opdyke, general counsel of the Delaware and Hudson Company. Horatio Colony (1835-1917), whose picture appears last and is unfortunately obscured by damage, assembled this album. The photograph of Levi Chamberlain is inscribed to "Horatio, friend and pupil." He was admitted to the bar in New Hampshire and New York in 1860; in 1869 he, along with his brother George, took over the management of the family business, the Faulkner and Colony Woolen Mill. Gardner, Alexander. (Abraham Lincoln)
c. 1860. Rare original painting of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. After a photograph by Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner. Scottish photographer Alexander Gardner immigrated to the United States in 1856 where he became best known for his photographs of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, and the execution of the conspirators to Lincoln's assassination. In near fine condition. In a period frame. The entire piece measures 20.75 by 16.75 inches. Rare and desirable. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War, and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America, abolished slavery, and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln began constructing his cabinet on election night and sought to create a cabinet that would unite the Republican party. His eventual cabinet would include his primary rivals for the Republican nomination and although his appointees held differing views on economic issues all were opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories of the United States. The most senior cabinet post of Secretary of State was appointed to William Seward who had recently failed to win the 1860 Republican presidential nomination and Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Treasury was Ohio Senator Salmon P. Chase, Seward's primary political rival and the leader of a radical faction of the Republican party that sought the immediate abolition of slavery. [Attributes: First Edition]

James Miller
New York: James Miller. Condition: Very Good. Although some might date this 1857, which is the Act of Congress date on this map, Rumsey notes that it first appeared in a Phelps guide in 1857; this might be its first separate printing, and he dates this printing to 1860, see Rumsey 2133.002. In original pebbled brown cloth binding, the colored map measures approximately 30 x 16 inches, the sheet measures 32 x 17 inches. Very good, slight separation at a few of the cross folds. One of the first maps to show Central Park, which opened officially in 1857 (there were maps printed in 1856 of Central Park), with Olmsted and Vaux hired in 1858 to keep working on it.

Charles Dickens
For sale is a fine and rare first edition of the original parts of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens. Published London: Chapman and Hall, 193, Piccadilly; And At The Office Of All The Year Round, 11, Wellington Street, North. MDCCCLIX. 254p.p. A full suite of 16 illustrations by H.K. Browne. Tall 8vo. P. 213 paginated correctly. Bound together with a first edition thus of Oliver Twist; or The Parish Boy's Progress. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1860. This being the first one-volume Edition by Chapman and Hall. Illustrated throughout by George Cruikshank. Beautifully bound in very fine contemporaneous tan calf. Raised bands to the spine, in gilt, and the title and author's name to a morocco label, in gilt. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. Externally it remains in really very pleasing order; the calf is largely fresh and the gilt crisp and bright, and the boards also. Occasional trivial extraneous rubbing, but this does not hinder its handsome finish. Internally, this example is without doubt one of the cleanest examples of these titles we have handled; only a tiny amount of light spotting to a few text leaves. The impressions to the plates are extraordinarily bright and bold - making them a very early, and important, set in the print run of the plates. Overall, this is an opportunity not to be missed. They are two of the hardest-to-find Dickens first editions, particularly in the First State, unrestored, and bound in a wonderful binding. It will grace any collection, and could not come more highly recommended. Should you have any questions relating … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Kummer, Heinrich, 1809-1889]
[St. Petersburg], 1860. Enamelled metal case, measuring 10.5 × 6.5 × 0.3 cm, with metal slide inserts. A coat of arms of the Russian empire and the inscription "Kummera privilegirov. schislitel'" ("patented calculating device of Kummer") to upper right corner. Lacking stylus and one of the stylus holders on the right edge is detached, but included. Type on the printed metal face clearly legible; the mechanism also appears to be fully operational. This compact mechanical calculator, also known as "Kummer's adder" or or adding machine, is one of the first personal pocket calculators, a precursor to the electronic calculators introduced in the 1970s. According to the inscriptions on the face of the device, it could be used to add, subtract, multiply and divide by moving the inserted slides with the help of a stylus. Manufactured first by the watchmaker Moser and in the 1850s also by the Mielck company, "Kummer's adder" was the invention of Heinrich Kummer (1809-1889), a Geman musician and amateur mechanic (a more portable version of a device made by the astronomer and inventor Chaim Solominsky in 1842). Kummer presented his invention to the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1846 while working for the Imperial Orchestra in St. Petersburg, and was granted the pattent in 1847. A similar device was patented in France in 1847 by François Billiard (1788-1858), who was likely Kummer's agent, since in France patents could be filed only by citizens. The device was also patented by a Henry Kummer in New York in 1869, however there is no record of the device being sold in the US, likely be … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOREAU Hector
Lefebvre, Paris, 1860. Possibly a unique copy. 2nd edition, in a smaller format (wide in-4) of the 1841 elephant folio. Lefebvre, Paris, ca. 1860. This edition is so rare that we haven't been able to locate any other copy worldwide. Folio, 1 leave of text, 28 plates with 48 photographic reproductions of the original engravings related to Egypt, with the addition of one which was not in the original edition (Vue des Colosses d'Amenophis III). Contemporary hardcover, no text, only a first (detached) page listing the photographs. Plates are slightly ondulated, otherwise a fine copy. Hector Horeau was trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1819 and 1822, and was a student in the ateliers of E. Ch. Nepveu and F. Debret. From 1821, he first worked as an illustrator and amongst his commissions was drawing the plates for F. Cailliaud s Voyage a Meroe (1826-7) . In 1825 he received his first commission as an architect, and architecture remained his main interest and occupation for the rest of his life, working on both private and public projects in France and England. During the first part of his life he travelled extensively around Europe (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, England, Russia and Sweden) and Egypt. In Egypt, 1837-39, he visited the entire country including Nubia. From Alexandria he went to Cairo, explored the site of Giza, hired a boat to Luxor and went up the Nile to Abu Simbel. To achieve the beautiful illustrations of the book, he mentions in the subscription bulletin that drawings made on site and the benevolent communications of daguerreotype views, have … [Click Below for Full Description]

DUMAS Alexandre
s.d. (circa 1860), 20,6x27,6cm, un feuillet remplié. - s.d. [Click Below for Full Description]
