"SPLENDID 19TH CENTURY VIEW OF VENICE, SEEN FROM THE GRAND CANAL ""Palazzo Ducale"". Lithography with original hand colouring, made approx. 1860 by Eugenio Testolini in Venice. Size: (image) 37,5 x 55 cm (paper: 49 x 63 cm). The view depicts the city in those turbulent times, when in 1848-1849 a revolt had briefly re-established the Venetian Republic and in 1866, following the Third Italian War of Independence, Venice, along with the rest of the Veneto, became part of the newly created Kingdom of Italy. With from left to right the Palazzo della Zecca (which once housed the official government mint); the Bibliotheca Marciana (behind the library we see the Campanile di San Marco); the Piazetta di San Marco with the granite columns (between which death sentences were carried out) carrying St Theodore and the Lion of Venice (the city patrons) and in the back on St Mark's Square the Clock Tower leading to Rialto and St Mark's Basilica; along the Molo (the quay fronting the lagoon) we see the Doge's Palace and across the bridge to the right the Palazzo delle Prigioni. In the lagoon there are two paddlewheel steamships, one pumping out a black funnel of smoke, as well as numerous gondolas rowing their customers across the water. Although tourism had been an important sector of Venetian industry since the 18th century, when it was a major centre for the Grand Tour, with its beautiful cityscape, uniqueness, and rich musical and artistic cultural heritage. In the 19th century, it had become a fashionable centre for the rich and famous, often staying or dining at luxury establishments … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cooper, George. (1838-1927?)
Autograph fair copy manuscript of "Sweet Genevieve" by Stephen Foster's Friend, George Cooper , including two stanzas and chorus, neatly penned on one page, in ink. 4to. Toned, small tears and chips around the edges, else fine. One of the most popular songs of the 19th century, with music by Henry Tucker, "Sweet Genevieve" is one of the few surviving songs by George Cooper. Composed in the late 1860's, the lyrics concern the real-life Genevieve, Cooper's wife who died shortly after their marriage. The lyrics were sold to the musician Henry Tucker, with whom Cooper also collaborated on such other songs as 'Rose of Killarney' (1876) and Civil War songs 'Weeping, Sad and Lonely' and 'When This Cruel War Is Over.' Cooper collaborated with many other composers of the period and his friendship with Stephen Foster in the last few months of Foster's life has been well documented. The two evidently collaborated on some songs together, which are now lost. It was Cooper who discovered the prostrate body of his stricken friend on the Bowery the day before Foster died, and who informed the family of his death. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

[Mauritius]
[N.p., but almost certainly Port Louis, 1860. Manuscript map, 15 1/4 x 25 1/2 on drafting linen. Handcolored. Old folds. Minor wear and soiling. Browned. Near fine. Manuscript plan of Port Louis on the island of Mauritius. The legend contains sixteen lettered items, including the fortifications and government buildings, as well as several buildings which are denoted on the map with a dotted line, indicating future rather than current structures. Government buildings and fortifications are colored red. This would seem to be a later copy of an earlier map of the city, evidently showing the town and fortifications as they were in 1769, when the French East India Company had just taken over. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

"Kavanangh's relates the preparation of his native disguise, his departure at nine o'clock that evening, the encounters with sepoy checkpoints, and his exhausting trek to British lines. His story is told with heroic Irish overtones" (Riddick). After being awarded the VC, Kavanagh exploited his new found fame. Rev Baldwin, a contemporary observer was less than impressed with the display, calling him "one of the most conceited persons he had ever met" and complaining that he "had VC on his slippers as well as all other articles in ordinary use" (Sorsky). Despite these accusations of vulgarity, Kavanagh became a great hero of the Victorian age. He later appeared as as character in George MacDonald Fraser's novel, Flashman in the Great Game. Lincoln, Abraham, 16th President of the United States]
Chicago: Charles Leib, 1860. Very Good. Four-page newspaper. A couple of small holes, various brown spots and other bits of minor wear A campaign newspaper for Abraham Lincoln in the Presidential Campaign of 1860. We note a half-column story on the front page of this issue that accuses Senator Douglas of being a Roman Catholic -- a charge based partly on the fact that Mrs. Douglas was a Catholic as were their children -- probably an effective charge in largely Protestant mid-19th century America. Our brief research suggests that Douglas was not a Catholic (or a formal member of any other organized religious group). The purpose of another half-column story on the front page was to make it clear that Lincoln had publicly condemned the actions of John Brown and did not object to Brown's execution. Charles Leib, the editor, was a political operative with a murky background who had previously edited a Democratic campaign newspaper on behalf of the Buchanan campaign in 1856. Leib served briefly as an Assistant Quartermaster in the Union Army before heading to new Mexico, probably in 1863, and died there in 1865 at the age of 38.

william the conqueror
LONDON: LONGMANS GREEN. I have here for sale both volumes of the most famous book ever published (debate please) entitled THE DOOMSDAY BOOK, as compiled for William the Conqueror. William had just conquered the Anglo Saxon kingdom of England, and he wanted to find out what his new property was worth. In 1086 this book, the Domesday or Doomsday Book, was published. This is the complete survey of all the pages covering every county - original Latin text but it has been transliterated so it is readable to all. This book was published around 1860 but there is no statement of publication details. Both volumes have the bookplates of Henry Edward Fox Strangways, Earl of Ilchester, Melbury - he became Lord Ilchester in 1865. Melbury Osmond in Dorset was the family seat and of course the site of the main family library. Vol I - 382 pages - each double page has one number Vol II - 450 pages - each side of a page has one number Quarter bound in brown calf leather on marbled hardboards, marbled endpapers, red page edges, very good condition. Five raised bands on the spines, edged with gilt, and with gilt lettering. c1850-60s AMERICAN MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK OF CHRISTIAN HYMNS AND PRAYERS OWNED BY THE JONES/DAVID FAMILY OF RICHLAND CO., SOUTH CAROLINA AND MOST LIKELY WRITTEN BY CONFEDERATE LT. CHARLIE H JONES OF THE 7TH SC CAVALRY BEFORE THE START OF THE CIVIL WAR! JONES WAS A CONFEDERATE MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT! Rare American musical handwritten manuscript in a unique format and interesting content. About 22pp, a few hands, accomplished in pen (some printing, some script), with what looks like some earlier handwriting from late 1700s-early 1800s in places through about 1860, with that terminal date written in the back. Certainly from Richland or Marion County, SC; one page titled ' Jesus in the Garden ' has 'Marion County'; some scribbling on the back leaf with ' Noble Richland County' written over and over. The front and rear carry 3 ID;'d names, Thomas M Jones, as well as a Margaret David. Research shows that Margaret David was Thomas M Jones mother, having married Charles H Jones, a Lieutenant in the 7th SC Cavalry and recipient of the Confederate Medal of Honor. One might assume that this book was in fact Charles' and he passed it to his children before the War in 1860, hence little Thomas' crude writing in the front and rear (he was around 6 or 7 at the start of the Rebellion). Measuring 3" x 8", although at one point the covers were cut in half (originally probably 6" across), allowing the leaves to be folded in half in a more compact 'pocket' fashion. This has, as one might guess, worn the folds and made them weak, split and torn in places, with several of these 'half-sheets' no l … [Click Below for Full Description]
