[GORE, Miss]. [MARCAILHOU, G.]
Ipswich: Cowell's Anastatic Press, [c.1860]. [8]ff. Drophead title. With eight lithographic plates (one of which photographically lithographed?), each with detailing added in pen and ink, some with additional wash, as issued. Original blind-stamped mauve cloth, titled in gilt to upper board. Rubbed and lightly marked, with tears to spine, some loss at head. Occasional spotting to text and plates. Ink inscription, dated 1889, of 'J.E.P. Fitzgerald', noting that 'This Book belonged to Lady Jane Bourchier' alongside an attribution of authorship, to verso of FFEP. A rare and rather curiously attractive production emanating from the firm of Samuel Harrison Cowell, leading lights in the Ipswich printing and stationary business. Eight lithographed leaves of verse are accompanied by illustrations of a society dance detailed in pen and ink, the whole inspired by French composer Gatien Marcailhou's (1807-1855) popular waltz Indiana. Annotation on this copy corroborates the annotations on a copy in the Bodleian, attributing authorship to Maria Gore, 'Maid of Honour to H.M. the Queen Adelaide...afterwards Hon. Mrs. Powys-Keck', sister to Viscountess Howe and daughter of Admiral Sir John Gore (1772-1736) and his wife Georgina, herself the daughter of Admiral Sir George Montagu. By the very nature of the hand-finished production, this must surely have been a limited edition. Few examples are recorded in institutions worldwide; OCLC locates only two copies in the British Isles (BL, Oxford), and a single copy elsewhere (Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek). . First edition. Oblong folio.

Ibn Aqil, Abu al-Wafa Ali.1040-1119.
Castillian Press, Cairo - 262 p. Arabic lithographed text within borders, contemporary marbled hard boards with a flap (rubbed, old damp stain, faded colour), clean from the inside, printed at the Castillian Press, Cairo, no date, [circa 1860’s] - This work is a commentary by Ibn ?Aqil on the famous 1,000-line poem on the principles of Arabic grammar, al-Alfiya by Ibn Malik. Ibn ‘Aqil was a leading grammarian of the Arabic language and wrote prolifically, but not much is known about his life. In addition to his commentary on al-Alfiya, his works include Taysir al-isti?dad li rutbat al-ijtihad (The facility of preparedness for the capacity of independent reasoning) and al-Jami? al-nafis ?ala madhhab al-imam Mu?ammad ibn idris (The precious encyclopaedia on the method of the Imam Mu?ammad ibn Idris, in six volumes). Both al-Alfiya and the commentary are standard texts in the traditional Islamic curriculum. Muhammad ibn ?Abd Allah ibn Malik (died 1274) was an Arab grammarian born in Jaén in Andalusia. After leaving Andalusia he settled in Syria. He is best known for his al-Khulasa al-alfiya (or al-Alfiya for short), a versification of Arabic grammar that was to become one of the principal texts for education in the Arabic language across much of the Islamic world. At least 43 commentaries have been written on this work, which is so important because scholars had previously searched for dependable authentication of the grammar and lexicon of Arabic. Ibn Malik intended his poem as a teaching tool rather than a work of research. However, students were required to memori … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kentucky]: Garrett & Nickerson, photographers:
Louisville: Published by G. T. Shaw for Garrett & Nickerson, Photographists, 1860. 27,[1]pp. plus nine oval salt paper print photograph portraits mounted on one sheet with printed captions and eleven salt paper print photographic views of the camp, with rounded corners mounted on eleven sheets. Quarto. Contemporary red morocco, gilt titles on front cover, floral blindstamping on both covers. Rebacked, with original spine laid down, hinges repaired. Some toning and scattered minor foxing to text. Overall very good. An exceedingly rare and early photographic work concentrated on the Kentucky State Guard in the lead-up to the Civil War. On March 5, 1860, foreseeing the coming of an armed conflict, the Kentucky State Legislature organized the Kentucky State Guard. By early spring the officers had received their commissions, with Simon Bolivar Buckner named inspector-general with the rank of major general. On Aug. 23, 1860 the Kentucky State Guard assembled for the first time on the grounds of the South-Western Agricultural Association in Louisville, naming their camp for famed Kentuckian Daniel Boone. Seeing a commercial opportunity, Louisville photographers Garrett & Nickerson captured the week-long event. The preliminary text in this work gives a detailed record of all the orders given during the first encampment, as well as a complete roster of the officers. The illustrations within the work are all salt paper prints from collodion glass negatives by Louisville photographers C. Alfred Garrett and George H. Nickerson. The nine officers depicted on the first page of photo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ichiryusai, Yoshitoyo
Yokohama, Kikuya Ichibei, ca. 1860s. Coloured woodblock print. 37x25 cm. Printed artist's name stamp, names of the publisher and the block cutter, title in the upper right and lower left corners. Paper slightly age toned, otherwise a very good print. A colourful print showing a scene in a geisha establishment in Yokohama, with a servant holding a match for the pipe of the client - an American sailor, who is sitting at a table served for tea with a young geisha at his feet. ''Miyozaki Yukaku'', Miyozaki's red light district opened in November 1859 after a request by the Dutch ambassador to build brothels for the many single foreign men in Yokohama. There were 15 brothels in Miyozaki, and of these, Gankiro was the largest and most famous. Gankiro was divided into two sections, one for foreigners and one for Japanese customers and Japanese customers weren't allowed into the foreigner section and vice-versa. In his 1860 world tour journal, Richard Henry Dana jr. gave a contemporary description of Gankiro which to him ''looked like a temple, it is so large and handsome, Within are parlors, reception rooms, dining rooms, a dancing hall, a theater, etc. The chief rooms were beautifully carved and elaborately painted'' (Guth, Longfellow's Tattoos, p. 17). Awagimaru, Hata
Ca. 1860. 48 pp. 26,5x38 cm. With thirty-seven vivid attractive ink and watercolour illustrations of the Ainu and their way of life and eleven pages of Japanese text in black ink, all on thin Japanese paper. Later beige patterned flexible card boards with brown cloth spine. With a centrefold and some minor edge wear of manuscript but overall the manuscript is in very good condition. This is a late Edo/ early Meiji period A-version (expanded and updated) copy of Hata Awagimaru's Ezo-tö Kikan [i.e. Strange Sights on the Island of Ezo (Hokkaido)], which is the earliest work on the ethnology of the Ainu and was originally written in Kansei 12 [1800]. The manuscript starts with a description of the history of the Japanese feudal expansion into and then colonization of Hokkaido by the Matsumae clan. This clan was granted the settlement of Matsumae at the southern end of the Oshima Peninsula and was also given exclusive trading rights with the Ainu. Additionally the Matsumae clan had the role of Japan's northern border defenders and thus were the first Japanese to make contact with Russian traders in the 18th century. One of the first illustrations in this attractively illustrated manuscript is a strong watercolour portrait of the Kunashiri Ainu Chief 'Ikorikayani', armed with his bow and sword. Next an Ainu woman is shown with a musical instrument, a jade necklace and a hand tattoo. The following series of captioned watercolours shows details of the hand tattoo, as well as another necklace and a bark skin jacket and includes further descriptions of Ainu dress. Then a seal is show … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lincoln, Abraham
[N.p., likely New York City, 1860. 8pp. Single folded sheet. First leaf detached, some tanning, minor edge chipping. Good. Untrimmed, unopened. An early printing of Lincoln's famous Cooper Union speech, given in New York in February 1860, in which he demolishes Stephen Douglas's claim that the Framers and Constitution granted no authority at the federal level to restrict slavery's expansion into the western territories. The speech catapulted Lincoln into the public eye and made him a viable presidential candidate. This printing of the speech concludes with a note that Lincoln finished his oratory "amid the loud and uproarious applause of his hearers...cheering with the full power of their lungs." This copy has the ownership signature of mid-19th-century New York Democratic politician Adin Thayer at the bottom of the first page. A rare printing, both in institutions and on the open market, of Lincoln's momentous Cooper Union speech. MONAGHAN 55. EBERSTADT 160:320. WRIGHT HOWES 64:139. MIDLAND NOTES 24:146. HEARTMAN 120:1112. [JOSEPH, MYERS & CO.]
London : [Joseph Myers & Co.] printed by C. Adler's Printing Establishment, Hamburg, c. 1860. Chromolithographed and engraved folding pictorial ephemeron, die cut in the shape of a rose, diameter when unfolded of 265 mm., captioned 'Vues de Paris gravés par C. Adler', with 28 scenes of Paris. Intact with no tearing or creasing; paper with toning and mild foxing. A rare and delicate item, one of a series of 'Souvenir Roses' printed by Adler in Hamburg for the overseas markets. The Bodleian Library holds in its collection a broadsheet published by Joseph, Myers & Co. around the time of the Great Exhibition of 1862, advertising 'The Souvenir Rose'. This broadsheet describes the design concept thus: 'This beautiful ornament represents on the exterior a splendid full blown rose with its graceful form and incomparable tints. At first sight, the flower seems to be a flat piece of thick cardboard, but by carefully introducing the nail between the folds of the paper, it will be found capable of being opened again and again, until it attains somewhat the form of a circle, which is covered on every side with beautifully executed steel engravings of various edifices and other objects of general interest...'.

The second edition, extensively revised and reduced from about 224,000 words to 213,000, was first published in 1845 in the scarlet cloth of John Murray's Colonial and Home Library. It was reprinted in the same series in 1852, stated on the title page as a new edition, instead of second, although no changes had been made. The present edition is described by Freeman as printed "from stereos of [the 1852 edition] but with new preliminaries and a postscript on p. vii... The page height is nearly two centimetres greater than before and the wider margins give the book a much better appearance"; it was issued for the first time in a green cloth case of the same style as the first three editions of the Origin. [Women Activists]
London: Houlston and Wright, 1860. First edition. Near Fine. Disbound 8 page pamphlet with pencil library shelfmark to upper cover corner and slight discoloration to bottom of cover. Internally complete and clean, with one small blot on pages 5-6. Else in exceptional condition, with no other copies on the market and OCLC reporting only one held at an institution. Pre-dating the UK Women's Suffrage Movement by almost a decade, An Appeal to the Women of the United Kingdom by Women was an early and important call to a rising class of female activists. Documenting the dire straits under which children and women were working, it encouraged the women of Britain to recognize the collective power of their own voices. "Fellow Countrywomen, Your voices are wanted--wanted throughout the kingdom--and wanted at once." Within the text, reports on unsafe working conditions and unhealthy hours were combined with emotional appeals based in maternal instinct; and the pamphlet writers argue that improvements for children and family can only come when women fight for themselves. "Fortitude and firmness, when occasion demands them, are virtues as noble and becoming in women as in men; the right line of conduct is the same for both sexes...our feelings were given to us to excite action." An early and scarce example of the rising tide of female activism in Britain, predating suffrage. Near Fine. Near Fine.
