Smith, J. A. and/or W. J. Dickson
Sketchbook has two neat pencil signatures at the front and back: one of J. A. Smith of Canonsburg, PA (Washington County), the other of W. J. Dickson, of W. Sunbury, Butler County, PA. Sketches in the book are dated 1860. Album is leather-backed boards, 7.5 x 5 inches, good condition with spine wear, some neat strengthening of inner hinges. 14 pages have been filled in with pencil sketches, include an elaborate drawing of a barn and an interesting drawing of an oil derrick (signed J.A.S.), with lovely depictions of cattle as well. There are two drawings with color (pastel or crayon that are not very compelling). Included loosely inserted is the best piece of all, an accordion folded set of panels of people, 14 drawings in all, on a single sheet, both sides filled in, measuring 26.25 x 6 inches with each drawing thus 3.75 x 6 inches. Dated from August to November 1864, these lovely, naive folk sketches include "Copperhead," "Madonna," "Nibs" "Harriet," "Polly I've just put the kettle on," "Jonathan," "A fine old Irish gentleman," "Studious rags," "Profound Astonishment," "Effects of country air on the growth," etc. --one small corner chip to this sheet. Good.

Urquhart, David. 1805-1877.
Thomas Cautley Newby, London, 1860. Volume I: ix, [1 errata], 402 pp., / Volume II: iv, 455 pp., contemporary green cloth, slightly rubbed round edges, title gilt on spine, preliminary pages lightly soiled and foxed, otherwise set in good condition. Urquhart is one of the most interesting figures of this period, a Philhellene turned Turcophile who became a career diplomat and later a journalist who tried to bring diplomacy into the public domain. He was in Greece from 1827-28; he served in the Greek navy and later helped Howe administer American relief. In 1830 he was appointed to survey the Greek frontier and in 1831 he joined Canning’s staff and accompanied him to Constantinople where he spent two years. The action of the United Kingdom in the Crimean War provoked indignant protests from Urquhart, who contended that Turkey was in a position to fight her own battles without the assistance of other powers. To attack the government, he organized "foreign affairs committees" which became known as Urquhartite, throughout the country, and in 1856 he became the owner of the Free Press. Urquhart introduced Turkish baths into Great Britain. He advocated their use in his book "The Pillars of Hercules" (1850), which attracted the attention of the Irish physician Richard Barter. Barter introduced them in his system of hydropathy at Blarney, County Cork. The Turkish baths at 76 Jermyn Street, London were built under Urquhart's direction. Volume one contains a history of the Druses and Maronites. Uquhart believed then to be one people. The work is based on notes taken during a journey … [Click Below for Full Description]

1860. (please see full item description for details). Allerlei, bewegliche Bilder für artige Kinder; Of Every Kind, Mobile Pictures for Good Children [Movable Book] Description: No publication information given, ca. 1860s. Cloth-backed, hand-colored pictorial boards with title printed in German, Russian, English, French, Spanish, and Italian. Six hand-colored plates with movable features controlled by paper tabs extending from the bottom of the page. Two plates lacking the tabs, the others not perfectly operational, one plate appears to lack a movable piece. The illustrations include partygoers playing musical instruments; children swinging on a large scale; a baby being wheeled in a pram; children playing pirates, and a man sharpening an axe on a grinding wheel as two children look on. (The sixth is a man probably meant to be hoisting something up with a rope, but this is the one for which a part or parts are lacking and the exact subject is unclear). We find no record of this title in OCLC but there is one copy of a book called "Ernst & Scherz, Bwegliche Bilder für artige Kinder," which also has titles in six languages and six plates with movable features, likely by the same publisher, identified in OCLC (though not, apparently, in the book itself) as G. Löwensohn of Fürth. Löwensohn did print many movable books, but whether this is one of them we cannot say with certainty. see our other Children's Books listings Please email us for additional details about any item and we will respond promptly. Anonymus.
Deutschland um 1860. Gr.-Oktav (250 x 165 mm). [Click Below for Full Description]

Elijah Winch
Roxbury, Vermont: Self published. Condition: Good. First Edition. A manuscript document of Roxbury Vermont on a thick blotter like paper. 17 x 14 1/2 inches edge to edge. There are four large edge chips and some water damage affecting the content. The document includes 176 identifiable names laid out in a mostly square grid pattern. There are another 30 or so names that are partially missing or have water staining making clear reading difficult if not impossible. There are, in addition to inked names, penciled numbers in some grids - the purpose is unknown, although given Elijah's position property ownership, legal, or tax related issues are likely. The rear of the map notes "Elijah Winch Plann of Roxbury." We were able to determine this document was for the town of Roxbury VT by comparing the names on the map to references online and in the book "The History of the Towns of Plainfield, Roxbury, and Fayston [Vermont], Montpelier, VT published in 1882 (a few copied pages provided with matches highlighted). Those same references helped us find Elijah, who was a Town Selectmen in 1851, 58, and 1860. And a constable and collector of taxes in 1843. And a "Lister" in 1845, '57, '62, and 1863. He was also a Justice of the Peace in 1850, 51, 52, 53, 57, 58, 62, and 44. Finally he was a town representative in 1854. As a Lister (definition from Colonial Occupation webpage) he would have been responsible for tracking property and related taxes. How closely this document relates to an actual layout of the town would be a fascinating research project, if comparables could even be found. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eight lithographed leaves of verse are accompanied by illustrations of a society dance detailed in pen and ink, the whole inspired by French composer Gatien Marcailhou's (1807-1855) popular waltz Indiana. Annotation on this copy corroborates the annotations on a copy in the Bodleian, attributing authorship to Maria Gore, 'Maid of Honour to H.M. the Queen Adelaide...afterwards Hon. Mrs. Powys-Keck', sister to Viscountess Howe and daughter of Admiral Sir John Gore (1772-1736) and his wife Georgina, herself the daughter of Admiral Sir George Montagu. By the very nature of the hand-finished production, this must surely have been a limited edition. Few examples are recorded in institutions world … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hine, L. A. (Lucius Alonzo), editor and author
Cincinnati: L. A. Hine. Thick 8vo, bound in half leather, very good. A haphazardly bound assemblage of L. A. Hine's works on economics and social and political reform, including a copy of his very rare anti-banking and pro-justice-reform novel, The Money-Changers (1860) of which there are only two copies in OCLC. Hine was a Cincinnati-based lawyer who edited a number of journals. Frank Luther Mott in his history of American magazines noted that all of Hine's journals ended in failure, but are 'not without value.' He was indoctrinated with revolutionary political ideas and could be considered a pre-socialist revolutionary, a firm communitarian and advocate for women's suffrage. This bound volume collects the first four issues of Hine's Quarterly (probably all published), the last issue of which does not have a title page, but its pagination takes up where the third issue ends. The first piece in this volume, 'The National Banks' appears to be advance sheets for publication in the April 1869 of the same 32 pp. article. Toward the end, there are selections from Hine's major work on Political and Social Economy that was first printed in 1851, again in 1856-57, and again in 1861; these are apparently from the last printing, 1861. An interesting and rare assortment of works from an author who was heavily involved in National Reform politics, which offered a broad critique of wealth accumulation, banks, the justice system, voting laws, land acquisition and disposition, and labor reform. Very Good.

Lynn, Frank G.
1860-1879, England. Small folio, 31.5 by 26.5 cm. 55 pp. with content, including 106 original drawings, most of which are mounted, and a few are drawn directly into the album, and six additional printed cartoons by Lynn. Most content on rectos, with the occasional verso having content on part of its page. (Six blank leaves in back.) We have been unable to find out anything about the artist, other than his name. The bulk of what is here is indeed copied from "Punch's Book of Ancient British Costumes", which was a series illustrated by John Tenniel in 1860, and which ran in issues through most of that year. Here the text is abridged from the original, but is often verbatim from the original. Virtually all the illustrations are copied, but do not appear to have been traced, with small modifications discernible. Because the drawings here are done with pen and ink and are not printed, they come off as sharper and richer than their inspiration. To our knowledge, the Tenniel series was never assembled together to form a single book, and so there is satisfaction to be derived here from having the series brought together as such. Nine pages of the album are devoted to fourteen cartoon drawings. We have no way of knowing whether these are copies or totally original by Lynn, who initialed these as well, and wrote captions, often with dialogue, either on the mounted paper or on the album paper beneath the mount. One of the drawings was drawn not by Lynn but a schoolfellow. That tells us that most of the album was kept by a student. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
