James M. Edney
James M. Edney (New York), 1860. Lithograph. Image: 22″ x 29.75″ Sheet: 28″ x 33.25″ Near fine, backed with archival paper. This impressively large engraving depicts Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster speaking in the Old Senate Chamber on the Compromise of 1850. Webster was known as one of the greatest orators of the Senate and this speech was regarded as his last important one. In an effort to save the Union, in his view, he lent support to a package of bills that included the Fugitive Slave Law. He could not have anticipated the angry backlash this prompted. For many in Massachusetts, his support for the law was unforgivable. The print features a full view of the U.S. Senate chamber in session. At lower right, Daniel Webster stands with raised right hand addressing the Senate. Each senator in attendance is carefully depicted, including Stephen Douglas (to the right of Webster), John C. Calhoun, Vice President Millard Fillmore (presiding at center), and Jefferson Davis. The visitorsÂ’ galleries above are full of men and women. The coffered, domed ceiling arches over a portrait of George Washington, an eagle, and the United States shield. A facsimile key to the portraits accompanies the engraving. OCLC locates no copies, but the American Antiquarian Society and the Library of Congress each hold one. [Attributes: First Edition]

Wheeler Gift 1532 (detailed with ills.); see also DSB I, 582 and PMM 365 (for Ball). - The RARE FIRST EDITION of Reis's paper on the invention of the telephone as presented in a lecture before the Physical Society of Frankfurt on 26 October 1861. Reis was the second man after Bourseul to think of transmitting speech electrically. It was Reis who coined the term "telephone" and he was the first, in 1860, to produce a functioning device that could transmit musical notes, indistinct speech, and occasionally distinct speech by means of electric signals. Practically, Reis's telephones had varying success; some worked well and others produced only static. Nevertheless, they were displayed all over Europe and one was on show in Scotland when Bell was there visiting his father. [Click Below for Full Description]

[HOLLOWAY, Professor] [Thomas Holloway]
[New York]: [Holloway New York], [undated, ca. 1860?]. First Edition (?). Sewn binding. Very good. 12mo, 16pp. Very good in the original sewn wrappers. All leaves are rather wrinkled, indicating potential water damage from some time ago, but we believe this points rather to the quality of the paper used, or perhaps how it was stored or handled, as there is no foxing, and no damage to the fragile sewn binding, which would have been more evident with significant water damage. Mild staining to the bottom edges of the last two leaves, not affecting any text. This is a highly scarce trade catalogue, advertising Thomas Holloway's pills and ointments, which was issued by their location in New York. The text emphasizes that the paper on which the catalogue is printed must have a watermark to be authentic, and the watermark is indeed present. There is a wonderfully ostentatious engraved illustration on the front wrap. Numerous diseases and conditions were supposedly treatable with these products, including consumption, dropsey, jaundice, heart conditions, and many others. Holloway because one of the richest men in the UK during his lifetime. We found no copies of this catalogue in library holdings, and none in commerce, at the time of listing. While we ventured to find similar catalogues from Holloway's company, trying very broad search terms, we came up with nothing, indicating that these very ephemeral catalogues were not preserved by institutions over the past century. A delightful curiosity of notable medical quackery.

HUNTER, William S.
Montreal. Printed and Published by John Lovell. 1860.. Hardcover. 33.5cm, folio. 36p. engraved frontis title-page, map, and 13 lithographed plates, in the original blind stamped cloth, with gilt titles on the upper cover, expertly restored, some foxing or damp spots mainly on the margins of the first four plates, the last plate has a small closed 3cm tear (expertly repaired), the illustrations are good clear strikes. (cgc) T.P.L. 5907. Lande 1863. Spendlove p44-45. Sabin 33936. Harper p167. "As the text indicates, Hunter lived in Stanstead, in the Eastern Townships, and so could describe and illustrate this distinct and very beautiful part of the Province of Quebec from personal knowledge. The plates were accurately drawn and lithographed, and are of much interest and increasing rarity. They were printed in black and white, and sometimes later given a wash of light colour. Lithographed by Bufford in Boston who did so many early views for Nathaniel Currier". Spendlove. The plates are oval shaped with interesting small separately titled vignette illustrations at the corners. These attractive antique lithograph views portray this scenic area of Quebec in the mid-nineteenth century. The map indicates the railway connections to the eastern townships. .

The endpapers and hinges are unusually clean and well preserved, the text-block is solid and tight, and very clean throughout, the map and plates all in excellent condition. Ludwig van Beethoven
4 Manuscript Volumes containing all of Beethoven's string quartets from the Opus 59 'Rasumovsky' quartets onwards, owned by a leading string player who worked with the Beethoven Quartet Society, Louis Ries. The four volumes are uniformly bound in half sheepskin over marbled boards with grey spine labels detailing their contents: 'Drey Quartetten v. L. Van Beethoven Op 59'; 'Drey Quartetten von L.V. Beethoven Op 75. Op 93'; 'Zwey Quartteten von L. V. Beethoven Op 127. Op 130'; 'Drey Quartetten von L. Van Beethoven Op 131, 132, 135'. The bindings are rubbed especially to the corners with the lower half of the backstrip of the first volume (Op 59) missing. Ries has inscribed his first volume on the first blank: 'To my dear friend and enthusiastic Quartett companion Alfred C. Jordan in remembrance of many enjoyable hours spent together. August 1913 Louis Ries.' (Ries' work as a string quartet player is amply recorded in the last quarter of the nineteenth century - we've not been ale to locate Jordan.) This inscription would appear to be written about half a century after the copying of the manuscripts which was executed by a professional German or Austrian copyist who has provided title pages for each successive work. Comparison with a printed Urtext edition suggests the copyist achieved a high degree of accuracy with an early edition of the works although there also some interesting discrepancies as in the 'Lento' movement of Op 135 where a slightly later musician (possibly Ries himself) has interpolated two additional musical staves to take into account a revised reading of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brüssel, 1855, 1860. Zus. 57 S., 8°. Michaelsen and Tillge, 1860. (Anonymous). Ghost-Thanks or the Grateful Unburied, a Mythic Tale in Its Oldest European Form [or] Sir Amadace, a Middle-North-English Metrical Romance of the Thirteenth Century. Reprinted from Two Texts, with an Introduction, by George Stephens . Cheapinghaven: Michaelsen and Tillge; (C. G. Iversens Boghandel), 1860. First edition of this text. Octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-11 [12-15] 16-74. The half-linen and moiré boards were probably added later to this book, present here in its original paper wraps issue -- a very fragile item -- with the added front cover hand-lettered in yellow, and added gray-green endpapers. Plentifully represented in UK libraries, but no holdings in the U.S. and scarce in trade. Scholarly marginalia (in pencil) scattered throughout. Boards quite worn at corners, spine panel perished but a sound, good copy nonetheless of a delicate book. #279. $150. This is the only known printed edition of this ballad, about a man who charitably pays the expense for the decent burial of a stranger, whose ghost subsequently does the man a signal -- and supernatural -- service. The editor notes the popularity of the plot in over a dozen works, from the apocryphal book of Tobit to Philip Massinger's play, "The Fatal Dowry." Presented in the original Middle English (a somewhat different dialect than Chaucer's but still fairly accessible to a reader of modern English) with the different texts from the two known manuscript sources printed side by side.
