Sadahide, Utagawa (1807-1873)
Japan: circa 1860s. Color woodcut. Triptych 38.5 x 75.5. Matted and framed by "K. Mizhuhara Bros. Japanese Artisans." Sadahide was born as Hashimoto Kenjiro in Shimosa Province (modern Chiba Prefecture) near Edo. He became a student of Utagawa Kunisada I (1786-1865), also known as Tokokuni III (hence the sada character in his own professional name) and usually signed himself Gountei Sadahide. He is also known as Hashimoto and Gyokuransai Sadahide. His early work, beginning in 1826, was mainly book illustrations, but in the 1830s he began to produce color prints of conventional subjects such as beautiful women and actors. Sadahide is considered one of Utagawa Kunisada's more accomplished students.3 He was a fine draftsman and often managed to bring a flair for compositional design to his pictures, when many of his contemporaries relied solely on pictorial reporting.4 He is also one of the finest artists in whose work Western stylistic elements are incorporated in a completely convincing manner. His deft use of Western perspective is combined with such typical ukiyo-e elements as the abrupt cutting off of the representation by the border of the picture plane, and shading to indicate modeling of the figures is juxtaposed with flat planes. Sadahide's work certainly influenced the later artists of the Utagawa school, who specialized in prints reporting actual events of the Meiji period, but most of these artists lacked his power of expression and depicted the much-changed Meiji world in the manner of their Tokugawa forebears.

CHINA EXPORT WATERCOLOURS ON PITH PAPER].
Canton ca, 1860. Watercolour and gouache studies on pith paper, overall dimensions 33 x 23.5cm., framed and glazed. Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith (often erroneously called "rice paper" or "mulberry pith") come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings (and later the little glass-fronted boxes) were inexpensive, light, easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voy … [Click Below for Full Description]

[American Revolution]; Thornton John Wingate
Gould and Lincoln, 1860. Rare First Edition. With an engraved portrait of Jonathan Mayhew as frontispiece, an engraved plate, "An Attempt to Land a Bishop in America" reproduced from a contemporary source and 9 facsimiles of 18th century titlepages to various sermons. 8vo, publisher's original pebbled brown cloth, the boards framed in blind with central blind-tooled publisher's marks, the spine lettered in copper, with deep chocolate brown coated endpapers. xxxviii, 39-537, [2 ads] pp. An exceptional copy, very fine indeed, for a book of the period pristine and better than one could hope for, the text spotless and especially clean, the cloth also pristine with just little dulling to the copper gilding on the spine panel. FIRST EDITION, IN A REMARKABLE STATE OF PRESERVATION ABSOLUTELY RARE IN THIS CONDITION, Thornton's collection oF Revolutionary era sermons is very scarce ON any account AND FINDING A FINER COPY IS HARDLY IMAGINABLE. In this collection of sermons Thornton brings to light "the true alliance between Politics and Religion" at a time when America was stressed by the greatest moral issue in its history, one bringing the republic to the brink of Civil War. A great service to history is done as he here reprints nine important 18th century sermons expressing "the voices of the Father's of the American Republic, how they evoked God in their civil assemblies, called upon their religious leaders for counsel from the Bible and recognized its precepts as a law for public conduct." - Preface. The sermons presented here are: Dr. Mayhew's Sermon of January 1750; Dr. Chauncy … [Click Below for Full Description]

PROUDHON Pierre-Joseph

Hine, L. A. (Lucius Alonzo), editor and author
Cincinnati: L. A. Hine, 1860. Thick 8vo, bound in half leather, very good. A haphazardly bound assemblage of L. A. Hine's works on economics and social and political reform, including a copy of his very rare anti-banking and pro-justice-reform novel, The Money-Changers (1860) of which there are only two copies in OCLC. Hine was a Cincinnati-based lawyer who edited a number of journals. Frank Luther Mott in his history of American magazines noted that all of Hine's journals ended in failure, but are 'not without value.' He was indoctrinated with revolutionary political ideas and could be considered a pre-socialist revolutionary, a firm communitarian and advocate for women's suffrage. This bound volume collects the first four issues of Hine's Quarterly (probably all published), the last issue of which does not have a title page, but its pagination takes up where the third issue ends. The first piece in this volume, 'The National Banks' appears to be advance sheets for publication in the April 1869 of the same 32 pp. article. Toward the end, there are selections from Hine's major work on Political and Social Economy that was first printed in 1851, again in 1856-57, and again in 1861; these are apparently from the last printing, 1861. An interesting and rare assortment of works from an author who was heavily involved in National Reform politics, which offered a broad critique of wealth accumulation, banks, the justice system, voting laws, land acquisition and disposition, and labor reform. Very Good.

JOSEPH E WORCESTER
Boston: Hickling, Swan, and Brewer, 1860. First edition of Worcester's greatest dictionary, large, thick 4to, pp. lxvii, [1], 1786; text in triple column, illus. in text; a very good, sound copy in publisher's half black morocco, gilt-lettered direct on spine. Contains a catalogue of English dictionaries (1499-1859). Worcester's best dictionary: the 1859 Merriam-Webster was the first American dictionary with illustrations, but credit for the idea goes to Worcester who suffered the fate of industrial sabotage at the hands of his seemingly ubiquitous competitor.
