Item #44726 "Eureka Valley's real estate development pattern was typical of wider patterns of urban edge development in San Francisco in the mid nineteenth century. Local land developers realized their investments first by making the land accessible (as with Robinson and Pioche and the Market Street Railway) and then selling the bulk of their property via corporate vehicles such as homestead associations. 38 Homestead associations were a successful and widely used nineteenth century method for encouraging development by subdividing and selling land at moderately affordable prices. In the 1860s alone, investors formed about 170 different homestead associations in San Francisco. Association officers purchased large tracts of land with investor capital and sold "membership shares" to working men or women for a small down payment and monthly installments. Once purchasers paid the share in full, they received title to a building lot in the tract. ... In 1864, the homestead association that was to give Eureka Valley is moniker and define the neighborhood for decades to come incorporated and filed its plat map. The Eureka Homestead Association laid out lots over the majority of the study area, covered sixteen city blocks between Noe Street on the east, Douglass Street on the west and 17th Street … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Youle Hind
London: Longman, et. al, 1860. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo; 3 large folding maps hand-colored in outline, 5 other full-page maps and plans, each with hand-coloring, numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, plus 20 rather spectacular chromoxylographic plates from photographs taken by Humphrey Lloyd Hime, photographer to the expedition, or from sketches by John Fleming, assistant surveyor and draughtsman; ex-James J. Hill Library, with James J. Hill's bookplate, perforated stamps on title pages (not touching any text), pages slightly browned; volume I neatly rebacked with old spine laid down; volume II with joints and extremities rubbed, else good or better in contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated spines, red and black morocco labels. Due to the nature of the chromoxylographs these plates in many copies of the book are badly darkened at the borders; here, these plates show some slight staining, but are for the most part very clear. Sabin 31933: "During this exploration, Mr. Hind lived almost constantly among the Crees and Chippeways, whose habits and peculiarities he was most eager to study, and prompt to record. Everything in their life had not only the charm of novelty to him, but as a man of science, he was anxious to observe all the facts which may prove stepping-stones in tracing their origin and their history.". Boston: Thayer and Eldridge, 1860. Condition: near Very Good binding. Includes all points of a Third Edition, Second Printing, Binding B (Myerson A 2.3.b). It is not an unauthorized or "pirate" printing. as the copyright page includes the Stereotype Foundry and Rand and Avery Imprints. Bound in medium brown, vertical wavy-grain cloth, with the boards blindstamped, and the spine stamped in blind and gilt. Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman, 3rd Edit. 1860-61 (Thayer, Boston) Very very Fine--ie. Museum and Special Collections Quality. Uniquely rare in condition such as this! 3rd Edition (Thayer and Eldridge, Boston, 1860-61). Dated on the title page of the third edition ("Year 85 of the States"). Binding and copyright pages indicates a later Thayer Eldridge version or the unauthorized edition of Richard Worthington, c. 1879. The presumed third printing (though previously thought to be the second), and first unauthorized printing, of the third edition, without the printers' imprints on the copyright-page. Myerson, Walt Whitman, a Descriptive Bibliography, A2.3.c (calling it the third printing); BAL 21397 (calling it the second printing). But the verdict is still out since there is no convincing evidence either way. Whitman, in fact, did participate in the design and printing of the 1860-61 version; and during the printing process he was known to have made changes to typography, design, and binding. This could be a version that incorporated these changes in the earlier edition; since the plates were purchased after the bankruptcy of Thayer and Eldridge, it is unknown if a printed version using this particular binding occurred earlier. The text (and title page incorporation of the "seminal" flourishes to the name) appears unchanged, and the balance of the text is indiscernible from Thayer and Eldridge's first printing. Walt Whitman archive states: "The significance of the 1860 edition of Leaves of Grass tends to be paradoxical. Although the poems often express grief over romantic and … [Click Below for Full Description]

EMMETT, DANIEL D. "I Wish I Was in Dixie's Land" N.Y.: Firth, Pond, 1860. First Printing, Second State. Folio, 6 pages including title page with decorative frame. Very good condition, Last page with full-page advertisement for sheet music offered for sale by Firth, Pond (headed "No. 1"). Solid copy of the First Printing of song written by Emmett for Bryant's Minstrels which within a year became "Dixie", the principal rallying song for Southerners. Second State, with printed advertisement on last leaf (versus blank page). The tune was actually written and first performed in 1859 and printed in a New Orleans newspaper (and possibly also issued in small pirated sheet music format in New Orleans later that year), but first issued with printed copyright by Firth, Pond in early 1860. Subsequent printings bore a different title page format, mostly with the altered and legendary title. "I WISH I WAS IN DIXIE!": THE ANTHEM OF THE CONFEDERACY It is one of the ironies of the Civil War that "Dixie," the unofficial national anthem of the Confederacy, was penned a northern Unionist for a New York City black-face minstrel show. The song, with a very catchy, rhythmic tune, was written by Daniel Decatur Emmett for the celebrated theatrical troupe, Bryant's Minstrels. It was first performed by them in New York in April 1859. A different troupe performed it in New Orleans, on April 9, 1860, as one of the numbers in the extravaganza Pocahontas. It seemed to touch a deep chord of Southern nostalgia and rapidly became such a hit that the song was featured in at least 13 other performances that m … [Click Below for Full Description]

WorldCat records only two copies, both held in Belgium. 10.25 x 13.25 inches (26 x 34 cm). The Belgian painter and printmaker James Sidney Edouard, Baron Ensor, was an important influence on expressionism and surrealism who lived in Ostend, Belgium for almost his entire life. He was associated with the artistic group Les XX. Besides his activity as a painter, draughtsman, and graphic artist, he was also a (rather eccentric) pianist and composer. According to Ensor scholar Herwig Todts, he "could not score his own compositions- as he played by memory-, and he played in an unorthodox way, with outstretched fingers, primarily the black keys of the keyboard. His music was scored and revised for symphonic orchestra by other musicians such as Michel Brusselmans and Georges Vriamont. Ensor took his musical work very seriously. Without success, he undertook a few attempts to have the ballet La Gamme d'amour performed in the Théâtre des Champs Elysées or by La compagnie des Ballets Russes, both in Paris." Several of his compositions were published in 1929 for the grand retrospe … [Click Below for Full Description]
