No publication information given, ca. 1860s. Cloth-backed, hand-colored pictorial boards with title printed in German, Russian, English, French, Spanish, and Italian. Six hand-colored plates with moveable features controlled by paper tabs extending from the bottom of the page. Two plates lacking the tabs, the others not perfectly operational, one plate appears to lack a movable piece. The illustrations include partygoers playing musical instruments; children swinging on a large scale; a baby being wheeled in a pram; children playing pirates, and a man sharpening an axe on a grinding wheel as two children look on. (The sixth is a man probably meant to be hoisting something up with a rope, but this is the one for which a part or parts are lacking and the exact subject is unclear). We find no record of this tiel in OCLC but there is one copy of a book called "Ernst & Scherz, Bwegliche Bilder für artige Kinder," which also has titles in six languages and six plates with moveable features, likely by the same publisher, identified in OCLC (though not, apparently, in the book itself) as G. Löwensohn of Fürth. Löwensohn did print many moveable books, but whether this is one of them we cannot say with certainty.

BELLE BOYD
BELLE BOYD.Photographic Negative. Sized for a carte-de-visite, 2½ x 3¾ in. Matthew Brady's Washington, D.C. Gallery, ca. mid-1860s. Archivally framed and secured in protective glass, 11 x 12½ in.Isabella Marie "Belle" Boyd (1844 – 1900) was one of the most famous and notorious Confederate spies. Boyd became an espionage agent at the age seventeen, aiding the Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley, and operating her spying operations from her father's hotel in Front Royal, Virginia. During the spring 1862 Valley Campaign, she was a courier and provided valuable information to Generals Turner Ashby and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. A bold and daring young woman, Belle, at times, galloped headlong into the dark with cipher messages and even crept into rooms to eavesdrop on Union Army conferences. General Jackson made her a captain and honorary aide-de-camp on his staff. After being betrayed by her lover, she was arrested on July 29, 1862, and spent a month in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. Exchanged a month later, she was in exile, living with relatives for a time. She was again arrested in June 1863 while on a visit to her birthplace: Martinsburg, now West Virginia. Suffering from typhoid, she was released on December 1, 1863 and went to Europe to regain her health. While in England, Belle had a stage career and published Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison. She died while touring the western United States. [Louis A. Sigaud, Belle Boyd, Confederate Spy, and Ruth Scarborough, Belle Boyd-Siren of the South].

Dickens, Charles [1812 - 1870].
[London]: [St. Luke's Hospital], [1860]. 1st separate edition, second issue (Eckel, pp. 188-191; Gimbel B-216; VanderPoel B-465). 19, [1] pp. 7" x 4-3/4". Original pale pink printed wrappers, sewn. Typographical border surrounding title lettering on front wrapper. Wrappers a bit faded, & show a mite of soiling. Paper repair to front wrapper top edge, as well as spine paper. Old vertical fold crease to center, as is usually found [from mailing?]. A VG copy. Item #27986 This short piece by Dickens, on St. Luke's Hospital, originally published in the January 17 1852 issue of HOUSEHOLD WORDS. With Dickens' consent, it was reissued in this pamphlet form by the Hospital management as a fund-raising mechanism. The first issue had purple wrappers, in which the 'appeal' was not highlighted from the remainder of the text and, evidently, donations suffered accordingly... in this second issue, the wrappers are pink, the 'appeal' is boldly printed, and it was accompanied by an easy-to-use return envelope [much as we see today in the solicitations we receive... make it easy on the mark!]. A rather uncommon item of Dickensiana.

1860. The most complete copy known of this striking plate-book, the best visual record of the Spanish Moroccan War. 1859 – 1860. Madrid. C. Moro, J. Donon. Folio (430 x 303 mm). 2 ff. [title page in two states, one printed in grisaille and one in red], 28 lithographed plates, of which 24 with partial color. Recent half calf over marbled boards, raised bands to spine, lettered and tooled in blind and gilt. Remarkably well preserved; one plate with small restored outer margin away from image, wide margins, very clean and fresh. 12000 $ First edition, the best artistic and visual record of the Spanish-Moroccan War of 1859, a.k.a. the War of Africa; the armed conflict (1859-1860) began as a boundary issue in the Spanish city of Ceuta, and ended up being fought in the north of Morocco against the Sultan´s army, coming to an end with the Spanish victory at Tetuan and Morocco´s sue for peace, one of the single most significant victories obtained by the Spanish armed forces in the 19th century. During the conflict, the siege and bombing of Tetuan was arguably the most significant event. The plates represent a striking visual record of the battles, skirmishes, military camps, naval engagements, the battle of Vad-Ras, the entry of the Spanish troops to Tetuan, Overall the album is the effort of several artists and lithographers, amongst them Mugica, Urrabieta, Zarza, Villegas (the most romantic ones), and Blanco; the lithography is due mostly to Donon, however several were made by Gonzalez. The album is astonishingly rare: only two copies are recorded in Worldcat, one in the United S … [Click Below for Full Description]
