LINCOLN] [Scripps, John Locke]
New York: Horace Greeley & Co, 1860. An early Lincoln campaign biography, described by Howes (S-247a) as "the most authentic" of the many accounts of Lincoln's life produced during the 1860 and 1864 campaigns. Published simultaneously by the Chicago Press and Tribune and in this New York edition, Scripps' work was based in part on an autobiographical sketch written by Lincoln. It also included additional details Lincoln provided only reluctantly, after telling Scripps that his life could be condensed into a single sentence from Gray's Elegy: "'The short and simple annals of the poor. ' That's my life, and that's all you or anyone else can make of it." According to Horrocks (Lincoln's Campaign Biographies, p. 54), "Although he informed Lincoln that he had added 'nothing that I was not fully authorized to put into it, ' Scripps freely embellished Lincoln's manuscript, adding details concerning his ancestors, parents, and religious upbringing that the candidate chose to omit." Lincoln may have been displeased with this, but the public was not, and the pamphlet sold very well. Monaghan 79. 32 pp, printed in double columns. Original self-wrappers. Front wrap has some restoration, an old price written in ink, and an old bookseller's description affixed to the bottom margin. Internally clean and sound; housed in a custom cloth clamshell case. Scripps, John Locke]
[New York: Horace Greeley & Co., 1860. 32pp, caption title [as issued], printed in double columns. Stitched. Mild toning, Very Good. This "earliest Scripps biography" [Monaghan] was first printed in Chicago in July 1860. Our New York imprint was "printed from plates cast from the same type forms" as the Chicago edition [Wessen]. It touches the major events of Lincoln's life and career, devoid of some of the more romantic mythology (e.g., Ms. Rutledge) but including the far-fetched notion that Lincoln deliberately lost the 1858 Senatorial race in order to enhance his presidential prospects. Howes calls it the "most authentic of Lincoln campaign biographies." Lincoln's short-lived career in Congress is reviewed, including his opposition to the Mexican War and his support of the Wilmot Proviso. A 'must' for the Lincoln or Presidential campaign collection. Howes S247a aa. Monaghan 79. Miles 418a. Wessen 12. LCP 9235.

FEYDEAU, Ernest
[Click Below for Full Description]

returning "the original lists from Lyons & Montpelier, & also a list of all the women we know of from books who are not in any official list. P.F.", 2 sides 8vo., no place, 16th July no year In the 1860's Jex-Blake decided that medical practice, rather than teaching mathematics, was the occupation best suited to her ability and interests. In 1869 she published an essay entitled 'Medicine as a profession for women' and applied to enter the medical course at Edinburgh University. She and four other women she recruited passed the matriculation examination and on 2nd November 1869 signed the matriculation roll, thereby becoming the first women medical students in a British University. Jex-Blake and her fellow female students were attacked in the street ('the riot at Surgeons' Hall'). It took two years of campaigning before women gained limited access to the wards of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. She then took the University to the Scottish Court of Session when it decided that degrees could not be granted to women. Setbacks followed and Jex-Blake took the campaign to London and founded the London School of Medicine for Women. She enlisted Russell Gurney M.P., whose enabling bill was passed in August 1876 stating that all of the nineteen examining bodies were permitted to accept women, and soon after the Royal Free Hospital and the London School of Medicine for Women became affiliates … [Click Below for Full Description]

Esemplare lievemente brunito. PRIMA EDIZIONE. 1860. An attractive carte de visite album in the gothic style; bound in richly embossed morocco edged in brass with brass clasps and elaborate brass bosses. The album is full, with 41 cdv's and 6 tintypes. Twenty-seven of the images are identified -- some examples are Laura N. Agnew and William P. Agnew; Anne Van Bergen Nash and Henry Nash; Laura Hawks Noble and George W. C. Noble. The backmarks are from scattered areas, St. Louis, New York, etc. There are several from Macclesfield (England) including two beguiling images of a fireman in Macclesfield labeled "Grandfather Livingston" -- one image has him wearing his helmet and the other his cap; both are tinted. The front joint has been discreetly reinforced. The album was produced by Mechi and Bazin in London; in 1863 their advertisement in The Cornhill Magazine asserted that they had on sale "The largest stock in London of Carte de Visite Portrait Albums" [The Cornhill Magazine, No. 40-42; April - June; 1863].

MARCHIORETTO, Pietro.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Original quarter mottled calf over marbled boards, gilt-stamped red spine label; rear board paper discolored. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon. Very good. FIRST EDITION of THE DISCOVERY OF CESIUM BY SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS. "The impetus to [Untersuchungen uber das Sonnen-spectrum und die Spectren der chemischen Elemente] came from Bunsen's desire to identify salts from their colour in the flames of a 'Bunsen burner', a device that had very high temperature but low luminosity. Beginning with coloured pieces of glass, on Kirchhoff's suggestion he turned to spectrographic recordings. These studies soon led to the discovery of several new elements such as caesium and rubidium and eventually to Kirchhoff's law of the spectral distribution of radiation from a 'black body'. [Gedeon]. "Bunsen was exploring the possibility of analyzing salts on the basis of the distinctive colors they gave to flames containing them; he had tried with some success to use colored pieces of glass or solutions to distinguish similarly colored flames. Kirchhoff pointed out that a much finer and surer distinction could be obtained from the characteristic spectra of such colored flames; unknown to him, the approach had been tried before, if only in a dilettantish way. By rigorous experimentation, however, Bunsen and Kirchhoff soon put the method on a firm basis. The burner invented by Bunsen gave a flame of very high temperature and low luminosity, which emitted line sp … [Click Below for Full Description]
