        13-Star U.S. Flag

1860. (AMERICANA). Thirteen-star American flag. No place, circa 1876. Cotton flag , measuring approximately 20-1/2 by 15 inches, with stars arrayed in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern, top and bottom stripes red, blue canton extends to the sixth stripe and rests on a red stripe. Mounted and framed, entire item measures 34 1/2 by 18 1/2 inches. $20,000.Centennial 13-star American flag, with the canton resting on a red or “blood” stripe. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress set the standard for the new nation's flag: ""Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."" The 13-star Stars and Stripes was official from June 14, 1777, until April 30, 1795, and represented the original 13 states; from that era up to the present there has never been a time when 13-star, 13-stripe flags have not been made and flown. The blue canton ""rests on a red rather than a white stripe. Some flag collectors call this red stripe the 'war' or 'blood' stripe"" (Druckman & Kohn, 39). A ""prisoner's flag"" dating from the Revolutionary War has a canton ""that rests on the fourth red stripe, or 'war stripe'Â… The probable original model for this wartime custom, followed during the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War, is the Royal Savage flag' [that flew on that Revolutionary War ship]"" (Mastai & Mastai, 18, 62, 124). The 3-2-3-2-3 ""quincunx"" star pattern (Keim & Keim, 35) of this flag was common between the years 1860-70, although it dates from 1779 (Cooper, Thirteen-Star Flags, 10) and is frequently attributed to Francis Hopkinson, who designed the original U.S. flag (Quaife et al., 40). The stars and canton on this flag are hand stitched, whereas the stripes are machine stitched. Small 13-star flags were a common home project for American families during the Centennial, with instructions printed in journals and kits to create one's own souvenir available for purchase . Wear and discoloration indicate that this flag was flown outdoors, with early hand-stitched repairs. A wonderful example of a late 19th-century flag, handsomely framed.

        Herr Vogt.

London, A. Petsch & Co., 1860. - 8vo. VI, (2), 191, (1) pp. Modern half calf with marbled covers and edges. First edition of Marx's longest polemic work, aimed against the polical writer and democrat of 1848, Karl Vogt (1817-95). A member of the German pre-parliament on the extreme left, Vogt had become professor of geology in Geneva in 1852 (he later also held the chair of zoology). The libel suit which he brought against the Augsburg "Allgemeine Zeitung" was tried at the Augsburg district court on 24 October 1859. "An important historical document, and a classic example of irreconcilable political controversy" (cf. Sauer & Auvermann V, 2340). A new and improved edition was published in Moscow in 1941 by the Marx-Engels-Lenin-Institute. Some browning as common; occasional edge chipping due to paper, but a good copy from the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015). Marx-Engels Erstdrucke 26. Thick octavo, contemporary full blind-decorated brown morocco rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, all edges gilt. $2200.Mid-19th century edition of the “Bread of God,” the Bible, in modern Western Armenian, handsomely bound. The ""Holy Translators"" Mesrop, Sahak the Patriarch, Eznik and others first translated the Bible into ancient Armenian in the late fourth and early fifth centuries (Darlow & Moule II:1, 86). ""In the mid-19th century one of the decisive features of Armenian literature was the replacement of classical Armenian with the vernacularÂ… The Armenian-language printing of the Bible took on a new importance when the Armenian Protestant Community was formed in 1850, and hired the linguist and scholar Elias Riggs to prepare new editions. In 1853 the Smyrna press printed the complete Bible in modern Armenian"" (Neressian, The Bible in the Armenian Tradition 36, 38). This edition was one of several that followed; no corrected edition would be adopted as standard until 1873. Characteristically, the title page refers to the Bible as ""Bread of God."" The line that refers to the Old and New Testaments is in Classical Armenian. Separate New Testament title page. Text printed in two columns of modern Western Armenian type.         Abraham Lincoln Famous Nomination Photograph

1860 - Platinum print photograph, 20 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches. One of three images taken by Alexander Hesler on June 3, 1860 in Springfield, Illinois. After the war, Philadelphia photographer George B. Ayres purchased Hesler's studio and negatives. This massive print was enlarged from Hesler's negative by Ayres ca. 1897, with original blind stamp in each of the lower corners, "G. B. Ayres, Copyright 1897." Framed to 30 3/4 x 37 1/2 inches. Hesler's photograph, taken right after Lincoln became the Republican nominee for the presidency, was his favorite: "That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases the people I am satisfied," Lincoln said. His law partner William Herndon commented that it was so "essentially Lincolnian; no other artist has ever caught it."Most prints made by Ayres were 8 x 10. The large size and spectacular condition makes this extremely rare.ReferenceOstendorf 26

Fables de la Fontaine (Signed Copy; Signed by Mercedes de Acosta at Chateau de Dieudonne in 1907, with 45 others)

Paris: Ancienne Librairie Furne, Combet & Cie, 1860. Undated but c1860. Half-leather binding with five raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. French text. 24 × 15cm, xv + 393pp. This copy was given as a birthday present in 1907 at a finishing school in France (Chateau de Dieudonne in Bornel) and has been signed to the front endpapers with a postcard to "Dodo" by 46 of the girl's friends, among them is the signature of Mercedes de Acosta (and her sister Baba). Her signature is found bottom right of the right hand page. Mercedes de Acosta (1893-1968) was an American playwright, poet and novelist, and a famous lesbian femme fatale. She was described by Cecil Beaton as "that furious lesbian" and Alice B Toklas wrote of her, "Say what you will about Mercedes de Acosta, she's had the most important women of the twentieth century". Her affaires de coeur included Isadora Duncan, Marlene Dietrich, Eva le Gallienne and most importantly, twelve years with Great Garbo. She was sent to Chateau de Dieudonne after her father's suicide in 1907 and it was here that she became aware of her sexual interests with one her first romances being with a girl called Catalina, the daughter of the head teacher. A collection of Fontaine's Fables, originally written in the late seventeenth century. This edition illustrated with twelve full page tissue-guarded plates by Tony Johnannot. The second edition "can be recognised immediately by the date, by the words 'fifth thousand', and the correct spelling of 'Linnean' on the title page ? The story is not found again in any printing, except in the American editions of 1860, until the end of copyright".

Nouveau Jeu de Loto Géographique et Universel ou Tableaux des Capitales de L'Univers.

Paris: Chromol de Engelmann et Graf, c. 1860. Loto Game, consisting of 18 pictorial game cards, each illustrated with five lithographic scenes, one small cloth bag containing glass counters, one large cloth bag containing 90 numbered circular timber tokens, folio rule sheet printed on yellow paper; all contained in the original decorated card box measuring 224 x 280 mm., with colour-printed lid, decorated in gold. A rare and exquisitely produced geographical lotto game, featuring lithographs of major cities and ports of the world. There are 90 countries and principalities featured in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and America, and each is represented by an illustration and brief description of population, exports and industries. Many of the representations of recently-settled Pacific destinations such as Hawaii, Tahiti and the Marquesas are drawn from published voyage accounts. The fine depiction of Sydney Harbour is very closely modelled on the view "Vooloo-mooloo au Port Jackson" which was published in the official account of La Place's grand voyage in La Favorite. This view had originally been drawn in Sydney by the voyage's artist Barthelemy Lauvergne, and was prepared for publication as an aquatint by Sainson."Nouveau Jeu de Loto..." is a particularly fine example of the deluxe nineteenth-century French children's games - beautiful and practical educational devices which made drawing-room geographical study a pleasure. The fine lithographs were printed by Engelmann and Graf, the company established by pioneering French lithographer Godefroy Engelmann.Scarce when complete and especially so when in such fine condition. Some slight ageing to lid otherwise in fine original condition.
