TRANSFORMATION: OR, THE ROMANCE OF MONTE BENI. [THE MARBLE FAUN]

Leipzig Bernard Tauchnitz 1860 - 2 volumes. First Tauchnitz Edition. The Copyright Edition. This copy with 35 original full-page mounted photographs (the numbers vary from copy to copy). 8vo, handsome original full vellum bindings by Giulio Giannini, with his label in each volume, the covers with wide gilt decorated black morocco on-lays at top and bottom, gilt borders surround the iconic central gilt motif of Romulus and Remus on a pedestal being suckled by a wolfl, spine elaborately gilt, brown leather labels gilt, gilt decorated end-papers. xii, 292; vi, 280 pp. A handsome book, elaborately bound and a fine copy in the deluxe binding. FIRST TAUCHNITZ AND FIRST COPYRIGHT EDITION IN A GIANNINI BINDING. Italy was the site of this, one of Hawthorne’s most popular books. Of it, the writer said, "No author, without a trial, can conceive of the difficulty of writing a romance about a country where there is no shadow, no antiquity, no mystery, no picturesque and gloomy wrong, nor anything but a commonplace prosperity, in broad and simple daylight, as is happily the case with my dear native land. It will be very long, I trust, before romance-writers may find congenial and easily handled themes, either in the annals of our stalwart republic, or in any characteristic and probable events of our individual lives. Romance and poetry, ivy, lichens, and wall-flowers need ruin to make them grow." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE ADDRESS OF THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSEMBLED IN CONVENTION, TO THE PEOPLE OF THE SLAVEHOLDING STATES OF THE UNITED STATES

Charleston: Evans & Cogswell, 1860. 16pp. Original printed yellow wrappers. Light wear to spine, minor wear and soiling. Internally clean. Very good. "Following the Ordinance of Secession itself, which the Carolinians regarded as a latter-day Declaration of Independence, the Address is the most important and most interesting of the several documents of the Secession Convention. It was drawn up by Robert Barnwell Rhett, fire-eating publisher of the MERCURY. The Address cleverly compares the relation of the Southern States to the North to the relation of the American colonies to England, states that all confidence in the North has been lost, asserts the right of secession, and presents a defence of slavery. It is both a justification of the actions of the Convention and an invitation to the other Southern states to join in a new nation" - Harwell. Institutionally common, but scarce in trade.         19th century view of Venice - Eugenio Testolini.

SPLENDID 19TH CENTURY VIEW OF VENICE, SEEN FROM THE GRAND CANAL"Palazzo Ducale". Lithography with original hand colouring, made approx. 1860 by Eugenio Testolini in Venice. Size: (image) 37,5 x 55 cm (paper: 49 x 63 cm).The view depicts the city in those turbulent times, when in 1848?1849 a revolt had briefly re-established the Venetian Republic and in 1866, following the Third Italian War of Independence, Venice, along with the rest of the Veneto, became part of the newly created Kingdom of Italy. With from left to right the Palazzo della Zecca (which once housed the official government mint); the Bibliotheca Marciana (behind the library we see the Campanile di San Marco); the Piazetta di San Marco with the granite columns (between which death sentences were carried out) carrying St Theodore and the Lion of Venice (the city patrons) and in the back on St Mark?s Square the Clock Tower leading to Rialto and St Mark?s Basilica; along the Molo (the quay fronting the lagoon) we see the Doge?s Palace and across the bridge to the right the Palazzo delle Prigioni. In the lagoon there are two paddlewheel steamships, one pumping out a black funnel of smoke, as well as numerous gondolas rowing their customers across the water.Although tourism had been an important sector of Venetian industry since the 18th century, when it was a major centre for the Grand Tour, with its beautiful cityscape, uniqueness, and rich musical and artistic cultural heritage. In the 19th century, it had become a fashionable centre for the rich and famous, often staying or dining at luxury establishments such as the Danieli Hotel and the Caff? Florian. With this fine lithography Eugenio Testolini, who had a shop on Piazza di S. Marco, catered to those wealthy tourists.Venice today is still regarded as one of the world?s most beautiful cities and attracts an estimated 50.000 tourist per day.Price: ?1.250,-.

Narrative of the Canadian Red River

1860. First Edition . HIND, Henry Youle. Narrative of the Canadian Red River Exploring Expedition of 1857 and of the Assinniboine and Saskatchewan Exploring Expedition of 1858. London: Longman, et al., 1860. Two volumes. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter green close-grain morocco, elegantly gilt-decorated spines with Indian motifs, green linen boards, top edges gilt. $2500.First edition of this early account of the Crees and Chippeways, illustrated with 20 full-page color-printed wood-engravings (some in four colors), depicting scenes of Indian life and views, seven hand-colored maps and charts (including two large folding maps), and numerous in-text black-and-white wood-engravings. Handsomely bound by Stikeman.“Professor Henry Youle HindÂ’s investigations of the country between Lake Superior and the Rocky Mountains were prompted by the need for a land access to the gold fields of British Columbia and for the possible establishment of a railway route to the Pacific Coast” (Wagner-Camp 360). The author, Professor of Chemistry and Geology at Trinity College, Toronto, was in charge of the 1858 expedition, during which he lived almost constantly among the Crees and Chippeways, whose habits he eagerly studied and recorded. Everything about them had the charm of novelty to him, and, as a man of science, he was anxious to observe all the facts that might prove helpful in tracing their origins and history. He also gives a comprehensive description of Lord SelkirkÂ’s Red River Settlement, now the site of Winnipeg. The color plates were made after photographs taken by Humphrey Lloyd Hime, photographer to the expedition, and from sketches by John Fleming, assistant surveyor and draughtsman, using a printing method invented by Benjamin Fawcett, whose firm specialized in very fine quality xylographs— a color wood-engraving process. Fawcett is generally considered the “father of color printing,” having developed a cost-effective technique of cutting several color wood blocks for a given plate (some here printed in four blocks of black, blue, yellow and green). Bound with both half titles. Staton & Tremaine 3820. Wagner-Camp 360. Field 699. Sabin 31934. Fine condition, handsomely bound.

        13-Star U.S. Flag

1860. (AMERICANA). Thirteen-star American flag. No place, circa 1876. Cotton flag , measuring approximately 20-1/2 by 15 inches, with stars arrayed in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern, top and bottom stripes red, blue canton extends to the sixth stripe and rests on a red stripe. Mounted and framed, entire item measures 34 1/2 by 18 1/2 inches. $20,000.Centennial 13-star American flag, with the canton resting on a red or “blood” stripe. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress set the standard for the new nation's flag: ""Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."" The 13-star Stars and Stripes was official from June 14, 1777, until April 30, 1795, and represented the original 13 states; from that era up to the present there has never been a time when 13-star, 13-stripe flags have not been made and flown. The blue canton ""rests on a red rather than a white stripe. Some flag collectors call this red stripe the 'war' or 'blood' stripe"" (Druckman & Kohn, 39). A ""prisoner's flag"" dating from the Revolutionary War has a canton ""that rests on the fourth red stripe, or 'war stripe'Â… The probable original model for this wartime custom, followed during the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War, is the Royal Savage flag' [that flew on that Revolutionary War ship]"" (Mastai & Mastai, 18, 62, 124). The 3-2-3-2-3 ""quincunx"" star pattern (Keim & Keim, 35) of this flag was common between the years 1860-70, although it dates from 1779 (Cooper, Thirteen-Star Flags, 10) and is frequently attributed to Francis Hopkinson, who designed the original U.S. flag (Quaife et al., 40). The stars and canton on this flag are hand stitched, whereas the stripes are machine stitched. Small 13-star flags were a common home project for American families during the Centennial, with instructions printed in journals and kits to create one's own souvenir available for purchase . Wear and discoloration indicate that this flag was flown outdoors, with early hand-stitched repairs. A wonderful example of a late 19th-century flag, handsomely framed.

        Herr Vogt.

London, A. Petsch & Co., 1860. - 8vo. VI, (2), 191, (1) pp. Modern half calf with marbled covers and edges. First edition of Marx's longest polemic work, aimed against the polical writer and democrat of 1848, Karl Vogt (1817-95). A member of the German pre-parliament on the extreme left, Vogt had become professor of geology in Geneva in 1852 (he later also held the chair of zoology). The libel suit which he brought against the Augsburg "Allgemeine Zeitung" was tried at the Augsburg district court on 24 October 1859. "An important historical document, and a classic example of irreconcilable political controversy" (cf. Sauer & Auvermann V, 2340). A new and improved edition was published in Moscow in 1941 by the Marx-Engels-Lenin-Institute. Some browning as common; occasional edge chipping due to paper, but a good copy from the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015). Marx-Engels Erstdrucke 26.         Holy Bible in Armenian

1860. (BIBLE IN ARMENIAN). [Bread of God. Book. Old and New Testaments. Hebrew and Greek Manuscripts Translated.]. New York: [American Bible Society,] 1860. Thick octavo, contemporary full blind-decorated brown morocco rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, all edges gilt. $2200.Mid-19th century edition of the “Bread of God,” the Bible, in modern Western Armenian, handsomely bound. The ""Holy Translators"" Mesrop, Sahak the Patriarch, Eznik and others first translated the Bible into ancient Armenian in the late fourth and early fifth centuries (Darlow & Moule II:1, 86). ""In the mid-19th century one of the decisive features of Armenian literature was the replacement of classical Armenian with the vernacularÂ… The Armenian-language printing of the Bible took on a new importance when the Armenian Protestant Community was formed in 1850, and hired the linguist and scholar Elias Riggs to prepare new editions. In 1853 the Smyrna press printed the complete Bible in modern Armenian"" (Neressian, The Bible in the Armenian Tradition 36, 38). This edition was one of several that followed; no corrected edition would be adopted as standard until 1873. Characteristically, the title page refers to the Bible as ""Bread of God."" The line that refers to the Old and New Testaments is in Classical Armenian. Separate New Testament title page. Text printed in two columns of modern Western Armenian type. The encyclopeadia can be divided into 4 parts: butterflies of the Arctic, American, Indo-Australian and African regions. Its objective was to illustrate every butterfly and macro-moth in the world. Seitz was director of the Zoological Garden and departmental chief of the Senckenberg museum, both in Frankfurt. It was his intention to finish the whole encyclopeadia by 1912, which proved to be quite unrealistic, and the publication was stopped and delayed due to both the World Wars. Eventually the publication of the encyclopeadia was abandoned in 1954, leaving the encyclopeadia unfinshed behind. In very good condition and nearly complete, lacking some text leaves and plates, with some pencil notations and a few leaves detached from bookblock.
