"Toronto, Canada West" and "The Great Eastern"

New York: Charles Magnus, 1860. Hand-colored lettersheets measuring 8-1/2 x 21 inches. 4to. A little grubby, but very good. Provenance: Estate of James and Katherine Abbe, Long Island, New York. Hand-colored lettersheets measuring 8-1/2 x 21 inches. 4to. The two lettersheets here are unusual productions for Magnus, most of his lettersheets featured images of New York and its environs or of the Civil War. The first of these two is based on Edwin Whitefield's "Toronto, Canada West" first published in 1854. Magnus is known to have reproduced it in the late 1850s. When launched in 1858, the Great Eastern was easily the largest ocean liner of its day. She was subsequently used to lay the Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable in 1865. This lettersheet was almost certainly issued between those two dates.Charles Magnus emigrated to New York with his family in the late 1840s. His older brother published the weekly German language newspaper, Deutsche Schnellpost, and it was there that Charles learned the trade, eventually going out on his own. In the guises of a publisher, map dealer, bookseller and stationer, he issued more than a thousand pieces of illustrated stationery - lettersheets, envelopes, song sheets, as well as prints - usually copying the work from other sources without attribution, sometimes altering the images slightly. He continued to use lithography and hand-coloring long after other publishers turned to photomechanical reproduction processes.Lettersheets were a convenient and thrifty form of stationery in an era in which postage was calculated on the number of sheets used. Folded in half, these four pages were charged as a single page.

        Ancona li 29 settembre 1860

[Paris: Chez Wild and A Hauser, circa 1860], 1860. Cloth a little worn at the edges; some light foxing; fine copy.. Oblong 4to, 26 x 35 cm, original gilt-and blind-stamped black cloth. 57 plates of views and scenes of Paris and surrounding locations by artists Jules B. Arnout and A. Deroy, lithographed by Rosé-Joseph Lemercier. One of the plates is in triplicate. A fine and classic collection of views of Paris, though apparently a hybrid assembledge of undetermined bibliographic origins. The plates have two different imprints: Wild, Passage de Sauman 38, and A. Hauser, Boul. des Italiens 11, but they are all lithographed by the famous Rosé-Joseph Lemercier. The numbering of the plates is not entirely sequential, pointing to the probability that this volume was put together with an assembledge of remainder plates from other works; nonetheless, it is larger collection of the Lemercier lithographs than is usually encountered in a single volume. 34 of the plates are signed by Arnout and 23 by Deroy.

NATURE PRINTED LEAVES OF PLANTS [spine title]

      c. 1860. Folio. 440 x 290 mm. pp. 23 double sided prints. Printed in green with hand drawn purple straight ruled borders, bound in contemporary half morocco, recently rebacked, lettered in gilt on the spine. A rare collection of nature printing in colour and of woody, rather than fleshy, specimens. Due to the more resistant nature of the specimens there are significant impressions on to the paper. Nature Printing. The art of nature printing originates in the 13th Century but it seems to have been the 1850s which saw a serious interest in England and Scotland with the work of William Aitken, Ferguson Branson and Thomas Moore. They all used a mechanical process to impress an image on lead or zinc, subsequently electroplating a printing plate on copper. However nature printing, in its simplest form, was easy to master and was also adopted enthusiastically by amateurs who would use the technique for collecting and recording plants, seaweeds and even moths and butterflies. The simple inking of a specimen, laying it onto paper, or between two sheets, and pressed with weights or a roller would produce an accurate and pleasing image to satisfy naturalists and artists.

He focused on the violence that resulted from maintaining a system of forced labor and the attending consequences on society in the slave states. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon. In 1849 he published the lithographic plates in the famous L’Italie à vol d’oiseau., o storia e descrizione sommaria delle principali città di questo paese, di H. Etiennez, accompagnate da 40 grandi vedute generali, disegnate dal vero da Alfred Guesdon e litografate con due tinte da A. Rouargue, Jules Arnout, A. Cuvillier, A. Guesdon. BAL 8791. Holmes [1809-94], was an American author and physician. He began his medical career as a general practitioner but shifted into the academic field, becoming professor of anatomy and physiology at Dartmouthand later was dean of the Harvard medical school. A stimulating and popular speaker, he published two important medical lectures, one in opposition to the practice of homeopathy and the other on the nature of fevers. His first important poem,"Old Ironsides" (1830), was a protest against the scrapping of the fighting ship Constitution. In 1857 he began to contribute to the Atlantic Monthly which he named the famous series of "Breakfast-table" sketches, which were collected in The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858) and several subsequent volumes.         Notes on Nursing: What It is, and What It is Not

New York: D. Appleton and Co. 1860 - First American edition. Publisher's green-black pebbled cloth, lettered in gilt, pale yellow coated endpapers. About fine, with some light rubbing to the otherwise very bright binding, some spotting to the otherwise clean interior. An exceptional copy. Notes on Nursing is a revolutionary textbook about basic nursing geared towards those entrusted with caring for others. A champion of formalizing nursing education, Nightingale spearheaded the two-pronged effort of creating a more educated public as well as more formally trained nursing staffs. Just as she helped establish a school to train midwives at King's College Hospital, Nightingale penned this text of general advice on how to care for others because, as she writes in the preface, "Every woman, or at least almost every woman, in England has, at one time or another of her life, charge of the personal health of somebody, whether child or invalid, - in other words, every woman is a nurse."         (Advertising exotic ‘lapdogs' - a menagerie for Ladies?).

(1860).. Typographic hand bill with xylographic bordure. Size: 13.5 x 9 inches. Minorily browned, but a fine copy. Very rare hand bill for a small and almost unknown menagerie, of which I only could find tiny advertisements in Bavarian periodicals from the years 1859/60. They mainly advertised the exhibition of well grown or particularly tall horses, in connection with the sale of exotic animals (monkeys, parrots and Asian cats). This hand bill though advertises the public exhibition of quite the opposite and appears to have been directed to a female audience, that would enter the Frankfurt autumnal fair : It would show the “smallest deer of the world – 6 inches tall and 8 years old, the darling and lap dog of the ladies of Java”, “the rare and never shown musk deer (from Tibet)”, and “two of the smallest and cutest nightingale monkeys of only 8 inches – the favourite toy of the ladies of Brazil”. Stieglitz claims that none of his animals would be presented in a cage, but instead would freely show some tricks on a table under the guidance of a young Indian lady.

        Falco Babylonicus.

London: , c1860.Folio (14" x 21"), colored lithographed bird plate. Small chip in lower left corner, some even browning and aging; still bright and colorful. John Gould (1804-1881) was born in Dorset, and spent his early career years as a taxidermist. By the late 1820s he entered the publishing business, and privately published his first publication that included folio sized bird plates (A Century of Birds Hitherto Unfigured from the Himalaya Mountains). The work appeared in twenty monthly installments. This work launched a fifty-year career that would pretty much use the same format for his future publications. This plate is probably plate number four from The Birds of Asia. ODB. Gould's Works on Natural History: Index.
