      Mexico City: Tipograpfía de Nabor Chavez, 1860. First edition. 8vo, 21.5 x 14.5 cm, pp [2], [1-5] 6-74, [2], [34 (11 pieces of music)] and 6 hand-colored lithograph plates. First edition of the first Mexican dance instruction book. The origen of this work is treated in four letters included in the prefatory material, dating from 1858. In these letters it is stated that the purpose of the book was to entice the youth of Mexico away form such activities such as gambling, into the more wholesome activity of dancing, and mentions that there was no dance instruction book available for them: it is to that lack that Sr. Ibarra has composed his book. After a brief introduction, he quickly goes over the basic dancing steps. He then discusses dances meant for two persons (El Wals, La Polka, El Scotish, etc.), noting with some satisfaction that he and Eduardo Gavira invented the dance called “La Camelina.” The discussion then proceeds to dances performed by four or more pairs (Mazurca de Tertulia, Cuadrillas Francesas, etc.) and concludes with a section on historical quadrilles, all of which fall under the major title of “La Guerra de Rusia,” referring to Napoleon's invasion of same. The book concludes with the six plates, to which the text is keyed, and the eleven pieces of piano-forte music, the longest one of which also concerns the Russian War. Of the six plates, the first two demonstrate dance steps; plate 3 shows Le Wals; 4 shows contradanza (square dancing); 5 shows danza habanera (Habana-style); and 6 shows polka. Significantly all the pieces of music in it are new and by Mexican composers. The pieces entitled “La Camelina” and “Polka Camelina,” both inspired by Dumas fils' La Dame aux camélias. Ibarra also gives the history of each dance and when it was introduced into Mexico. Dancing was frowned upon by the Church, which explains perhaps the late appearance of this, the first book on dance in Mexico. It was not till Maximilian and the French invasion that the country opened up to dance and theater. Little is known about Ibarra. Very rare: one copy on OCLC, in the Biblioteca Nacional of Mexico, and only one of the second, in the same library; only 1 copy at auction on record, viz. this one. Original black half sheep over decorative cloth blind stamped on upper cover, spine gilt-lettered and decorated, original blue and brown marbled endpapers. Small snag in spine (no loss), lightly rubbed, fore edges of upper board moderately eroded, lower fore edge chipped, corners bumped. Some leaves lightly browned, but otherwise interior, including plates, is fine. An excellent, complete copy of a significant book.

      - Antique print, titled: 'Ile Sainte Helene. - Ville et rade de James-Town', Spanish and Commonwealth ships off the coast near island Saint Helena, where Napoleon Bonaparte was jailed. Handcoloured tinted crayon style lithograph on wove (vellin) paper. Made by an anonymous engraver after Lebreton. Louis Le Breton (1818-1866) was a French painter who specialised in marine paintings. Le Breton studied medicine and took part in Dumont d'Urville's second voyage aboard the Astrolabe. After the official illustrator of the expedition died, Le Breton replaced him. From 1847 he devoted himself mainly to depicting marine subjects for the French Navy. Condition: Good, given age. Margins quite browned, a few small spots in the image. Small tear in top left corner image, backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 22.9 x 17.1 inch.       England, 1860. Very Good. Oblong small quarto measuring 6" x 9". Full leather gilt. Contains 52 sepia-toned albumen photographs measuring between with some captions. Very good album with tears and rubbing, lacking roughly 20 photographs from the original 72. Photographs are near fine.A photo album compiled by a group of British Spiritualists in the 1800s as a gift for a member of their group. The album begins with a hand written dedication which reads, "this album together with a purse of money was presented to Mrs. Scattergood by a few of her friends, on her departure for American, as a token of their admiration of her qualities as a friend and medium. On behalf of the presentees signed, John Lamont." This is followed by a list of 72 of her "friends" and fellow spiritualists who are represented with portraits that correspond with their numbers on the list. Most of the photographs show portraits of well-to-do men and women posed either seated or standing in fashionable clothing. A few of the photos show posed "candids" such as one of three men at a table with skulls. Other photos used photo tricks to make it appear as if there were ghosts in the picture with them, to make their talents more believable. One of these photos shows a couple with a ghost floating beside them, another shows a man behind a chair looking at a tiny specter off to one side. Some images are of whole medium families while others show young children that may have had "the gift." An 1895 book presented by Two Worlds Magazine entitled "Two Worlds Portrait Album -- Spiritual Mediums, Workers, and Celebrities" by Professor A.R. Wallace which includes photos and short biographies of noted spiritualists mentions many of the people seen here. According to Wallace, Mrs. Scattergood was "the wife of a working man, she was influenced by the wise spirit people. Paul said: "I suffer not a woman to teach," but the spirits knew better, and inspired her to deliver public addresses which charmed the large audiences attracted by the novelty of a woman speaker." She was a successful healer, and for years in America practiced as a medical medium with marked success." Other noted members include Mr. and Mrs. Everett, Mr. John Taylor, Mr. Richard Fitton, Mr. John Ainsworth, David Duguid, John Lamont, and Mrs. James Bowman. Of Mr. Taylor, Wallace says he's "A modest, matter of fact man. No one would suspect that miracles occur in his presence." Richard Fitton is said to have been "a well-known, tried, and trusted friend of mediums and the cause...Is a quiet but reliable worker, especially for the religious development of the movement." Ainsworth's biography mentions that "although trained in the Methodist School he could not accept the "eternal torments" dogma and when brought face to face with spiritual phenomena speedily grasped their significance." Of all the members mentioned in the album David Duguid is said to have been the photographer of the bunch and had the ability to capture spirits on film.This album documents portraits of notable British spiritualists on the eve of one of their own departing for America. The mid-1800s saw a rise in the popularity of the religion and mediums were peddling their gifts to the wealthy, bereaved, and curious across Europe and America. Notable believers included Mary Todd Lincoln, who held numerous seances at the White House, Pierre Curie, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Other celebrities including Harry Houdini worked to expose the religion as fraudulent. The movement lost momentum in the 1920s and lacked the enthusiasm from its earlier years although there are still believers to this day.A wonderful album depicting early and notable practitioners of Spiritualism.

        Historic Views of Aden - Port Said - Suez Canal

      Aden, Port Said, Cairo, 1860-1892. Twelve (12) original albumen photographs, mostly taken by French photographer Hippolyte Arnoux who is best remembered for his superior photographic documentation of the construction of the Suez Canal from start to completion. The lot comprises several large print photographs including 8 views from Aden, 3 views from Port Said, and 1 photograph of the Sphinx at Cairo. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 18,5 x 23,5 cm, and the largest 23 x 28,5 cm. Mounts range slightly in size, measuring from 25 x 37 cm to 33 x 41 cm. Each of the large photographs is mounted onto its own cardstock leaf. Rare and striking views by a notable photographer The Library of the French National Archives (Archives Nationales) holds a collection of photographs by Hippolyte Arnoux, in particular relating to the excavation and construction of the Suez Canal. Aden, as it was during the early years of British administration, is the highlight of this set of photographs, and seen in eight views. Not long before these images, in 1850 Aden was declared a free trade port, gaining control of the coffee trade which had previously been out of Mokha, and profiting from the liquor, salt, arms, and opium trades. Images include the following: Two early and rare views of the Cisterns of Tawila, Aden's most prized historic site, are taken not long after the British restoration works. It is interesting to not the two guards on a narrow bridge, three small canons for defence, and a sign posting the large holding volume. [By the time of the British occupation of Aden, the Tanks had been almost completely buried by debris carried down the mountains by successive floods. Sir Robert Lambert Playfair, while serving as Political Agent at Aden, rediscovered the tanks and recognized their potential value. In 1856, the British began to restore the tanks to their original function, in order to provide a reliable source of water for public consumption. The results are seen in these photographs, one of which shows a sign boasting a holding capacity that exceedinged 150,000 gallons of water. With the intention of storing the greatest quantity of water possible, British engineers replaced the ancient and intricate network of 53 or so small, cascading cisterns along the valley walls, with a few larger tanks, only to find them less effective than anticipated.] One striking view of Al Aidroos Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Aden, dating back to the 14th century AD. Legend says that the original builders were at a loss what to do about the doors, until ready-carved doors floated onto the shore all the way from India. The mosque is dedicated to Imam Ehsikh Abu Bakr Bin Abdullah Al Aidarous, the patron saint of Aden, who lived between 1446 and 1508, came from the centre of religious teaching in Tarim, Hadhramaut Valley, before settling in Aden. The house of Al Aidarous (the Hashemite) is traced back to Sheikh Abu Bakr Bin Abdullah Al Aidarous who was also known as the Al Adani Al Hashemy and the founder of the city of Aden and who is said to be a direct descendent from Prophet Mohamed. [This image is embossed with a different photographer's stamp: BFK Rives.] A general view of the city's expanse of white buildings sprawling along the foothills, and the Al Aidroos Mosque perched on a slight rise in the background. Three photographs of Steamer Point (modern day Tawahi) in its early stages of commercial development, and still rather desolate, including a one taken on Telegraph Hill with a direct view of the communications station and RAF Hospital, one which centers on the Grand Hôtel de l'Univers which was originally named Hotel Suel by its owner Jules Suel, and one birds eye view of the harbour sparsely populated but equipped with British Army barracks, a coaling station, and a row of hotels. [One of the oldest buildings in Aden is the RAF Hospital, perched high on the hill above Steamer Point. In January 1839 the British East India Company landed Royal Marines at Aden to occupy the territory and defend the British shipping trade from privateering. In 1850 Aden was declared a free trade port, from where coffee, liquor, salt, arms, and opium were traded. As it became an important trading center, in the mid-19th century, it became necessary to facilitate the replenishing of coal and boiler water for the ships. Thus Aden acquired a coaling station at Steamer Point, and the ancient Cisterns were restored and enlarged. It has been said that Suel's Grand Hotel was an information exchange and especially a source of capital for trading ventures that would have been illegal if legislation had been able to keep up with colonial enterprise.] Possibly also taken at Steamer point, a group of locals from inland Yemen transport twigs and tall grasses for sale to the hoteliers, this photograph being sated in manuscript, Aden 4 December 1892. Three of Arnoux's photographs of Port Said and the Suez Canal are present here - featuring embedded captions in French, and being especially reminiscent to the artist as he earned his fame with his important and stellar photography of the construction of the canal. "Jetée de Port-Said avec le Phare" captions a view of the lighthouse which was completed in 1869, one week prior to the inauguration of the Suez Canal. Another shows the town of Suez from the canal, with two local men enjoying the calm waters. Especially stunning is an image of travellers and their camels resting across shore from a quaint traditional village near Port Said, the embedded manuscript caption reading, "H. Arnoux. Port-Said. Village Arabe et Chamaux près de [Kasgako?]." Finally, a most uncommon large archaeological photograph with embedded captioned, shows the Great Sphinx at Cairo when it was still in the stages of excavation. A train of mining carts sits at its side waiting to be filled with rocks sand removed from the site, and the large stele which sits at the base of its chest is partially covered with heavy blankets for protection. [In 1817 the first modern archaeological dig, supervised by the Italian Giovanni Battista Caviglia, uncovered the Sphinx's chest. The entire Sphinx was finally excavated in 1925 to 1936, in digs led by Émile Baraize. The present photograph pre-dates the complete uncovering of the Sphinx by some thirty to forty years.] Hippolyte Arnoux was a commercial photographer of French origin, active in Egypt and Yemen from at least 1859 and into the 1890s. Various studies of his extensive photographic work have essentially formed a biographical sketch of his career, although very little is known of his personal life. Before establishing his own studio, he worked for the Zangaki Brothers [Adelphoi Zangaki], two Greek photographers working out of Port Said and Cairo who specialized in Egyptian scenes. Sometime in the late 1850s he opened a studio in Port Said, and was therefore well-placed to document the excavation and building of the Suez Canal, the work for which he is best remembered. [The French Suez Canal Company came into being on 15 December 1858 and work started on the shore of the future Port Said on 25 April 1859.] Arnoux's studio was situated in main square, known as "Place Ferdinand de Lesseps". He also had a boat moored on the canal, where he had his dark room. Both the shop and the boat carried the inscription "Canal Photographer." For over a decade, Arnoux documented the excavation of the Suez Canal, and published the resulting photographs as "Album du Canal de Suez". Toward the end of the Suez Canal project, in the late 1860s, he partnered with British-Italian photographer Antonio Beato. The Compagnie universelle du canal maritime de Suez [Universal Company of the Suez Maritime Canal] displayed a large number of Arnoux's photographs at Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1889. Arnoux's shots were placed side by side with those of the Zangaki brothers, together with maps and data charts. From photographing in Egypt during the 1860s and 1870s, his portfolio also included many views of the major historical monuments such as the Sphinx and Pyramid, the Tombs of the Caliphs, important buildings such as Cairo's 12th century Citadel, as well as a series of ethnographic images of the local people and their trades, which he called the "local types." Some of the most popular works being of an Arabian knife grinder, an Arabian barber and his client, a water carrier, a Jewish Woman, a Turkish Woman, and Arabian Dancer and other veiled women. He also produced cabinet card photographs. To the verso of the mounts he advertised his Suez Canal Album, as follows, "Album du Canal du Suez. Photographie du Canal. Hte. Photographe Port-Said. Collection Complète des Vues de l'Ismthe. Stéréocopies Instantanées. Types et Coutumes Egyptiens." Some of his other photographs, kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and in private collections, illustrate his journeys to Aden, Jerusalem, Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. He is known to have approached at least one other photographer in the Middle East with a view to exchanging negatives. The Tawila Tanks, also known as 'Aden Tanks', the 'Cisterns', 'Queen of Sheba Tanks' or 'Solomon's Tanks', are located at the head of Tawila Valley in the southwest sector of Crater. They are thought to date anywhere from the 1st to the 11th century, and are considered one of the greatest historical engineering feats in South Arabia, likely built and developed during the rules of Banu Zuraia', the Roulades, the Tahirides and the Ottomans and mentioned in the ancient Al- Musnad inscriptions. However, not much is accurately known of their history. The system of tanks, originally numbering approximately 53, were designed both to collect the scarce rain water and divert run off to protect the city of Crater in case of heavy rains and sweeping floods. They were excavated out of solid rock and lined with a thick coat of fine stucco, resembling marble. By the time of the British occupation of Aden (beginning in 1839), the Tanks had been almost completely buried by debris carried down the mountains by successive floods. Sir Robert Lambert Playfair, while serving as Political Agent at Aden 1854-1862, rediscovered the tanks and recognized their potential value. Aden had no fresh water and was often cut off from mainland water supplies by hostile tribes. Playfair hoped that the Tanks, once repaired, could provide a reliable source of water for public consumption. British commenced a restoration in 1856 to return the tanks to their original function, however, in the process, the design and layout of the Tanks were significantly modified from their original state. With the intention of storing the greatest quantity of water possible, British engineers replaced an intricate network of numerous, small, cascading cisterns along the valley walls with a few, larger tanks, consequently reducing the Tanks' effectiveness to both control floods and store water.

        Salmon-Fishing in Canada: By a Resident

      Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, London, England 1860 - A rare and absolutely stunning first edition copy of this classic book. Bound in gilt-embossed leather for Chatham House Grammar School in Ramsgate, England, est. 1797. Brown leather boards with intricate gilt detailing, gilt text block, five raised bands on the spine, and colorful nonpareil marbled endpapers. Front board has a gilt-embossed emblem stating, "Prize / Chatham House / Ramsgate." Red and gold striped headbands and thin red placeholder ribbon. Leather boards slightly darkened in some spots where they were previously scratched or rubbed. Extremities lightly rubbed, two corners slightly bumped, slight scratching to bright gilt text block. Flyleaves lightly foxed. Spine ends are lightly pulled, such that there is a 1/2" crack to the rear head of the spine, 3/4" crack to the front head, and 1/8" crack to the rear tail, though the binding remains tight and all parts of the spine are very secure, due to the high integrity of the leather. Front free endpaper is slightly detached at its bottom, and a piece of tape is affixed along the length between the front endpapers (presumably preventive tape because we see no other signs of tearing). Five short lines (difficult to decipher, they look as though they were written with a quill) on back of rear free endpaper. Otherwise (and overall), the book remains in excellent, gorgeous condition. Siebeck (1812-1878), was a German-Austrian horticulturist and landscape designer. He worked with Carl Alexander Anselm Baron Hill from 1842 to 1845 in Vienna, and he was the city gardener of Leipzig from 1846 to 1857. His largest work was Stadtpark in Vienna, in addition to Schönbornpark (1862/63), the Esterházypark (1862-1869) and the avenues of the Viennese Ringstrasse (from 1863).

        Why be Good Tempered? One page of Manuscript in Thackeray's hand from volume I of his novel "The Newcomes". Signed and dated, May 30, 1860.

      1860 1860 - 21 lines on recto only of single quarto sheet. The Newcomes was published in twenty four numbers, 1853-55. It followed the success of Vanity Fair (1847), which rapidly shot Thackeray to fame, and the subsequent novels Pendennis (1848-50) and Henry Esmond (1852). This manuscript was probably requested by a charitable organisation or written out for a friend. This is a playful page advocating the benefits of being bad tempered: 'Surely a fine furious temper, if accompanied with a certain magnanimity and bravery . is one of the most precious and fortunate gifts with w[hi]c[h] a gentleman, a lady can be endowed . 'The lazy grow tired of contending with him; the timid coax and flatter him; and as almost every one is timid or lazy, a bad tempered man is want to have his own way . She [the bad tempered female] has the place which she likes in the drawing room . if the family are taking their tour in the summer it is she who ordains whether they shall go, and where they shall stop' But God forbid you are a person of mild manners and temper: 'nobody cares whether we are pleased or not.       Title within fine architectural grey wash frame & engraved port. of the collector inlaid on following leaf. Written in a fine scribal hand in red & black ink. 2 p.l., 351 pp. Large 4to (276 x 210 mm.), cont. half-morocco & marbled boards (some scuffing), spine nicely gilt, t.e.g. [Paris: ca. 1860]. Bérard (1806-73), a practicing architect, was an important member of a group of scholarly amateurs in France who in the 1840s and 1850s began the serious study of historical architecture and design and the comprehensive collecting of primary graphic material in the decorative arts. Bérard's monographs on the ornament prints of François Cuvilliés (1859) and Daniel Marot (1865) have never been superseded. Bérard's manuscript catalogue details in 1174 lots his important collections of architectural and ornament books, prints, and drawings, amongst the richest ever formed. The collections were inherited by Bérard's son, Eugène Charles Bérard (1838-90), who added greatly to the drawings and loose engravings. They were dispersed in two sales in 1891. With Bérard's bookplate. From the reference library of the Rapilly firm, the leading architectural booksellers and publishers in Paris from the 1840s until World War II. Rapilly was the expert for the 1891 sale of Bérard's books. ❧ Lugt, Marques, p. 14-"Bérard était le fondateur d'une importante collection de dessins et de gravures d'ornements, dont des parties figurèrent à plusieurs expositions…La collection avait été recueillie dès la première heure, au moment où les raretés dans ce domaine n'étaient point recherchées et se trouvaient à bon point compte. Elle résumait un travail de près de cinquante années. Il avait été conduit à la réunir par suite de son intérêt pour toutes les manifestations d'art. Il y trouvait en même temps, comme dit A. de Champeaux, des éléments comparatifs, qui facilitaient les nombreux travaux d'architecture dont il était chargé. Il s'en aida également pour la publication des ouvrages qu'il entreprit sur la serrurerie artistique et sur divers détails de la construction…M. Bérard possède aussi beaucoup de dessins d'ornements très rares et très importants…En résumé, il y a peu de cabinets aussi riches en ouvrages d'architecture et en dessins d'ornements.".
