Map of the Five Cities of New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Hoboken and Hudson City

New York: Valentine, 1860. Map. Hand-colored lithograph. 39.5" x 28". This fantastic large scale map of New York City and its surrounding areas was originally prepared for the 1860 edition Valentine's "Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York," a richly illustrated collection of facts and statistics related to the city. It depicts Manhattan Island at the center from the Battery up to lower Westchester and the Bronx. Around Manhattan are the waterfront areas of Brooklyn, Astoria, Hoboken and Jersey City. Overlaying the grid are the names and tracts of Manhattan's original land owners, as well as scattered individual buildings. Wards are in color and there are ferry routes, depths in sounding and a 'proposed prospect park' in Brooklyn. Printed in two sheets, this version has been mended together and lined with linen. Original folds as issued are slightly browned but overall very pleasing. Must be seen to be appreciated. Mathew Dripps was from Ireland. He became a prominent map publisher based in lower Manhattan and is remembered most for his maps of New York City. His maps are hard to find.

Coon, a medical doctor, was also an enterprising businessman, who arrived in Calfornia in 1853. The party then called him for the mayorship in 1863, which he won handily.         Fine original woodburytype photograph of the composer, three-quarter length, seated, by Etienne Carjat (1828-1906)

Paris Galerie Contemporaine. 244 x 193 mm., laid down to publisher's mount with decorative border and text. Ca. 1860, but published 1876-1884. A fine impression.. "No composer in the first half of the 19th century enjoyed the measure of prestige, wealth, popular acclaim or artistic influence that belonged to Rossini. His contemporaries recognized him as the greatest Italian composer of his time. His achievements cast into oblivion the operatic world of Cimarosa and Paisiello, creating new standards against which other composers were to be judged. That both Bellini and Donizetti carved out personal styles is undeniable; but they worked under Rossini's shadow, and their artistic personalities emerged in confrontation with his operas. Not until the advent of Verdi was Rossini replaced at the centre of Italian operatic life." Philip Gossett in Grove online

Autograph letter signed, concerning several of his inventions.

1860 - Autograph Letter Signed from the Designer of the "Monitor" ERICSSON, John (1803-89). A.L.s. dated March 26, [18]60, to an unknown recipient. 2-1/2 pp., on lined paper embossed with a small steam locomotive and the letters "P. & P. in the upper left corner. 247 x 195 mm. Creased where folded, small tear mended, but fine overall. A very fine, detailed letter from the prolifically inventive Swedish-born engineer John Ericsson, whose many accomplishments include the invention of a screw propeller for steamships, a rotary steam engine, the first English steam-driven fire engine, and his enormously popular "caloric" engine. This last, a hot-air engine designed to use heat more directly and efficiently than its steam-powered counterpart, was the first mass-produced heat-powered engine; in various incarnations, it satisfied the growing need for small and medium-sized sources of industrial power throughout the nineteenth century. Ericsson's most famous achievement, however, was his design for the Union Navy's ironclad warship Monitor; the Monitor's decisive victory over the Confederate ironclad Merrimac in March 1862 marked a turning point not only in the course of the Civil War, but in the history of warship design and construction. In later life Ericsson interested himself in alternative sources of power, particularly solar and tidal energy. The present letter, written almost exactly two years before the Monitor's defeat of the Merrimac, discusses several of Ericsson's inventions-a hydraulic pump, a "swing machine," an air hoister and a telegraphic machine-as well as the difficulties Ericsson had encountered in obtaining the necessary support and encouragement to proceed with the patenting of these inventions. The last paragraph of the letter contains a reference to a "new" caloric engine, which was "nearly ready"; Ericsson continued to improve the caloric engine to the end of his life. Ericsson's imperious and combative temperament is apparent throughout the letter, particularly in the postscript, in which he states that "I should prefer the 'cove' you allude to showing his hand before I have my patent claim. Under my general principle I will be able to hit him all the harder-so with others who may feel inclined to tread on my & our toes just now." DAB. Strandh, History of the Machine, pp. 136-39; 164.         The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments.

George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, London 1860 - Small octavo, original dark leather gilt, slightly rubbed. Presented aboard ship by John McDouall Stuart. His book of common prayer, inscribed perhaps in his hand with the quotation from Matthew "Ask, and it shall be given you", records the gift: 'Presented to me Henry Nathaniel Phillips by John McDouall Stuart on board of the ship "Indus" on her passage from South Australia to London in 1864.         A View of a Himalayan Range, Most Likely Near Simla, With Men Wearing Native Indian Dress in the Foreground].

1860 - N.d. [ca. 1860]. Watercolour and pencil ca. 51x34 cm (20 x 13 ¼ in). The painting is on the artist's original wash-line mount on the thicker Whatman paper, and in a recent matting. Unsigned. There are some areas of browning on the upper part of the painting, otherwise a very good watercolour. The watercolour shows a mountainous landscape with gorgeous snowy peaks occupying the upper part of the view, and with a serpentine road and men wearing Indian native dress in the foreground. Most likely an area near Simla (Shimla), a favourite summer refuge for the British in India in the 19th century and the official summer capital of British Raj from 1864. Located in the north-west Himalayas at an average altitude of 2250 m (7234 ft), Simla was the star of the hill stations - mountainous resorts providing relief to British society from the heat and disease of the plains. "The Himalayan resorts were at an average altitude of six thousand feet and offered magnificent views of range after range of jagged snowy peaks. This region became a venue for leisure activities and the towns in the hills rapidly acquired the character of English villages" (British library). Drawings of hill stations' mountainous landscapes quickly became a popular pastime for professional and amateur artists: "These places appeared as a Garden of Eden to the British. Here they found relief from the poverty, disease, dirt and heat of the Plains., For both men and women, holidays in the Hills gave them unbroken leisure to sit and sketch with worries set aside, among scenes anglicised to look like home., [Simla in particular was apprehended as a place of] a grander less-tamed nature with dark woods and conifers set against a staggering backcloth of stupendous peaks" (Archer M., Lightbown R. India Observed: India as viewed by British Artists, 1760-1860. London, 1982).

London: Sampson Low Son & Co 1860 - Three volumes. Mixed edition, volume I first English edition and volumes II and III second English editions. viii, 316; (2), 360; (2), 368 pp. Attractively bound in recent mottled green half morocco over plain green cloth boards by Bayntun, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered to two panel, gilt decorated to others, top edges gilt. Slight fading to cloth at top edge of lower board of the first volume, a very good set. Cf. Parrish and Miller, pp. 39 & 40, referring to the publisher’s circular stating that the first edition appeared in mid to late August 1860. The second edition volumes present here were evidently issued soon after, bearing the same year of publication as the first edition. The 16 pp. publisher’s catalogue, which they call for at the end of the first edition of the third volume, is not present here: either never included or not bound in as the case may be.

Italian Peasant Woman in Scenic Landscape

1860. A charming image of an Italian peasant woman adorned in native dress. This stunning watercolour is a beautiful example of the peasant genre of painting that was popular during the mid-nineteenth-century and epitomized by the works of artists such as Jules Breton (1827-1906), William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875). In this romanticized portrayal of rural life, a colourfully dressed peasant woman is pictured amidst a picturesque seaside landscape engaged in her daily chores. Works such as this not only exalted the dignified, pure life of the noble peasant, but also celebrated the beauty of the native countryside. They were most likely sold to tourists as souvenirs of their travels. Watercolour mounted on sheet of brownish-gray paper. Very good condition apart from some light soiling and minor foxing in the margins, mild rippling, and two small tears in the right margin.

The Lake Regions of Central Africa. A Picture of Exploration

London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts 1860, 1st Edition. (Hardcover) xvi,[2],412;vi,[2],468pp. + 24pp. (publisher's catalogue). Very good. Octavo in two volumes. 12 chromoxylograph plates (including frontispiece in each volume), woocut illustrations in text, and folding colour "Map of the Routes between Zanzibar and the Great Lakes in Eastern Africa in 1857, 1858 & 1859." with inset map of Africa. Original orange cloth with coated brown endpapers; front hinges repaired with minor restoration work to head and foot of spines; bookplate of a previous owner on front pastedowns. Account of the exploration to the unknown Lake regions of central Africa by Burton and Speke during which they hoped to discover the "Mountains of the Moon" and the source of the Nile. From their first stop at Zanzibar they explored the coastal regions around Mombassa before returning to Zanzibar to start the next stage of exploration to Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika, a thousand mile journey that took over seven months. Physically draind and ill they returned to Kazeh to recuperate. While recuperating Burton sent Speke on a side trip to a large lake they lay north according to Arab traders. Speke found the lake and after some cursory exploration with information gleaned from the locals decided he had discovered the true source of the Nile. After his return the pair returned to Zanzibar. On Burtons's return to London he discovered that Speke had already published his erroneous conclusions and the famed dispute between Burton and Speke re the true source of the Nile developed into a bitter feud..

Die Geschichtliche Entwickelung der National-Oekonomik und ihrer Literatur. (Theorie und Geschichte der National-Oekonomie 2. Teil).

Wien, Carl Gerold's Sohn 1860 - Royal octavo. Pp. xv, (i), 792. Set in Gothic type. Hardcover, later three-quarter light green cloth and marbled boards, gilt morocco label (bit rubbed) to spine; vague dampmark and sporadic foxing to first few leaves. In about fine condition (old ownership stamp to endpaper, some pencil marking to title). Overall an excellent copy. ~ First edition. "During the last generation, American readers of German appear to have relied, as a rule, for information about early phases of German economic thought, chiefly upon two writers, Kautz ("Die Geschichtliche Entwickelung der National-Oekonomik und ihrer Literatur") and Roscher. Of Kautz, it is enough to say that he was of the rear guard of the rhetoricians. His book is wonderfully plausible, if not lucid, reading. Its early pages appear to express methodological conclusions which the maturest scholarship has not superseded." - Albion W. Small, "The Cameralists: The Pioneers of German Social Polity" (1909).       Pesten [i.e. Budapest]: Kiadjak Lauffer es Stolp, 1860.. [10],191,[3]pp., including in-text illustrations, plus eight plates (including frontispiece) and folding map. Original pictorial tan paper boards, recased. Boards a bit soiled. A touch of light foxing, else very clean internally. An attractive copy. Hungarian Janos Xantus was one of the pioneering ornithologists of California. The present book is the second of two Hungarian publications by Xantus, providing an account of his travels in California and Baja. The other volume, LEVELEI EJSZAKAMERIKABOL..., was also published in Budapest in 1858, and describes his travels throughout the United States. Howes calls that volume, edited by the "incompetent" Istvan Prepost an "unauthorized" edition of Xantus's letters describing his travels in North America. The letters in this volume focus on California, Baja and Alta, and give descriptions of California's geology and climate, native Indians, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Fernando, Mojave, Fort Tejon, and several places in Baja, including La Paz and Loreto. The plates show Mission San Fernando, Indians working in a blacksmith shop at the mission, a female Indian working a loom, Indians at Tejon, a vista of the Sierra Nevada, a view of a large, terraced building at La Jolla, and more. The map shows California from San Francisco all the way south to the tip of Baja. Involved in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, Xantus came to the U.S. at the end of 1851 and worked as a topographer on the Pacific Railroad Survey and then as a member of the U.S. Coast Survey. He was stationed in California during the coastal survey, and while there made valuable collections of birds for the Smithsonian Institution, including many new species, some of which were named after him. Later he was attached to the U.S. navy and commanded an expedition to make meteorological observations in certain parts of the Pacific Ocean. During the latter service, which concluded in 1861, he discovered eighty-nine islands and sand banks. He was appointed U.S. consul at Manzanillo, Mexico, and led a scientific research party into the Sierra Madre before permanently returning to his native Hungary in 1864.       [Vienna?, c. 1860]. - Lithogr. leporello, c. 198 x 1450 mm. Fastened in somewhat later half calf portfolio. Bibliographically unrecorded programme for an erotic Mardi Gras parade; the title contains a pun on the Prussian residence Potsdam and the German vulgar term for the vagina. All 18 illustrations show brief captions with tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the (non-)costumes. The fashion points to the 1860s, the language suggests Vienna as place of origin. - Reinforced tears and edge damage to title page; rather stained with traces of frequent handling.

Extremely Rare Wide-Awakes Torch most probably used in Lincoln?s 1860 presidential campaign

Double-swivel kerosene torch of the type used in the 1860 pro-Lincoln Republican presidential election campaign. The wooden shaft is 42.5? long (visible), 3.5? circumference, inserted into a 3.5? metal holder, upon which a double-swivel kerosene torch is mounted. Approximately 55 inches tall.Wide-Awakes were volunteer marching clubs that banded together throughout the North in support of the Republican Party during the 1860 presidential election. To generate voter enthusiasm for Lincoln, the Wide-Awakes staged dramatic nighttime parades illuminated by kerosene torches. They served as a type of self-appointed ?political police.? Wide-Awakes escorted visiting speakers to meeting places, guarded the polls, and attempted to keep order at political rallies. In their nocturnal marches, Wide-Awakes holding lanterns and torches snaked through crowds of supporters. Tightly woven hats and oil cloth capes protected them from the flames, and a red sash tied at the waist provided a splash of color. A large eye

Clark's New Sectional Map of Missouri compiled & engraved from the United States land surveys and other reliable sources

J.C. Clark & Co, St. Louis 1860 - A rare and large map of Missouri published on the eve of the Civil War: an important cartographic record of ante-bellum Missouri. This highly detailed map, published by real estate agents J.C. Clark & Co., depicts the state in platted counties, with numerous towns, railroads (both built and proposed), post offices, churches, mills, and roads identified. Land offices are listed, as are "Chartered Rail Road Routes" by means of lettered references. A manuscript red hachured line divides the state into five irregularly-shaped land districts. The map is quite rare, with only five copies recorded (Clements, State Historical Society of Missouri, Yale, British Library and the Kansas City Public Library). Not in Phillips, A List of Maps of America. Folding pocket map lithographed by Julius Hutawa of St. Louis, Mo., full period hand colouring, on two joined sheets. Folds into original green cloth covers, the upper and lower covers blocked in blind, the upper cover lettered in gilt, advertisement for map publisher E. Mendenhall of Cincinnati pasted to front pastedown. (Map with tear extending from gutter repaired on verso). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Partial archive of the Niemetschek-Neuling-Richter family.

Sadska, Prague, Vienna and other places, 1784-1860. - More than 100 letters and documents by, to and about Franz Xaver Niemetschek and his family. Copious archive aquired from the direct descendants of Mozart's first biographer. While the documents contain no new information on Mozart himself, they do shed new light on Niemetschek's hitherto rather obscure biography and provide a vivid account of the life of the Viennese and Bohemian bourgeoisie during the Biedermeier period. In particular, the present material provides documentation that the musically-minded scholar Niemetschek, a pianist himself, could very well have visited Mozart's concerts in 1787 during his time at the University of Prague, thus once more fuelling the old debate whether the biographer and his subject did in fact meet. The archive comprises material from Niemetschek's lifetime and from that of his two children up to the early 1860s. A detailed catalogue is available upon request.
