circa 1860 - 1870 - Deck of 20 illustrated playing cards, 3 5/8 x 2 9/16 inches, hand-colored, with 2 card with printed game instructions. All housed in the original box with color printed label on the lid. A few cards have light soiling or foxing as does the blank paper of the box. Near fine. The game or Snip, Snap, Snorum has its roots in the late 18th century and was popular throughout the 19th century. It is basically a stops game in which cards are played in ascending sequence in suit. This version has five suits, each containing four cards. Of these, two suits depict stereotyped images of blacks with ridiculous names that verge on racist.

New York: Currier & Ives, 1860. - Lithograph, 13 1/2 x 18 inches. Moderate age-toning, foxing, and soiling. Moderate browning in margins. Small closed tears and chips in margins, one moderate-size closed tear in left margin. A fair copy. A lithograph political cartoon published by Currier & Ives commenting upon the anti- slavery plank of the 1860 Republican platform. Abraham Lincoln is shown being carried uncomfortably in the middle of a split wooden rail, an allusion to both the platform and to Lincoln's backwood's origins. Supporting the left end of the rail is a black man in simple working clothes who states, "Dis Nigger strong and willin' but its awful hard work to carry Old Massa Abe on nothing but dis ere rail!!" Holding the right end of the rail is well-dressed newspaper editor and strong Lincoln supporter Horace Greeley (identified by a copy of his NEW YORK TRIBUNE in his coat pocket). Greeley tells Lincoln, "We can prove that you have split rails & that will ensure your election to the Presidency." Lincoln replies, "It is true I have split rails, but I begin to feel as if this rail would split me, it's the hardest stick I ever straddled." A finely drawn and insightful political cartoon from the 1860 election. REILLY, AMERICAN POLITICAL PRINTS, 1860-31. WEITENKAMPF, POLITICAL CARICATURE IN THE UNITED STATES, p.123.       [Woburn, Ma. and elsewhere]. 1860-1864, and sporadically later.. 325pp. Quarto. Original three-quarter calf and marbled boards, paper label. Boards nearly detached and scuffed. Some leaves loose. Extra- illustrated with many clippings. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. Charles Symmes Parker (1839-1928) was a printer and newspaper editor for over fifty years. Before the Civil War, when most of the diary was written, he worked as a printer in Woburn, Massachusetts, purchasing into his first paper in 1861 at the tender age of twenty-one. He writes on March 26, 1861: "Last Saturday morning I was greatly surprised at receiving an offer from Messrs. Hastings & Parker of an interest in the BUDGET concern, and after consideration and advice have concluded to accept, buying out a third of the concern, valued at six hundred dollars...I had no thought of such a thing as going into business, not feeling satisfied that my experience and age would warrant such a step, but this offer appears so advantageous I have ventured to accept it." Parker discusses the printing and newspaper business in various scattered passages. In June of 1861 he writes of the effect of the Civil War on business: "I went to Boston on Saturday to make arrangements for some printing for George Guild. Business in the city is very dull indeed, and the only place I visited which looked like prosperity was J.E. Farnell's printing office, he having secured the city printing." And later, in July: "There is little or no work to be done, but I suppose we get our fair share of what there is doing." And in August: "Since the disaster at Bull Run, business has sunk still lower, until now it is discouraging even to look forward. The prospect is dark enough." The diary spans June 1860 through September 1862, and then sporadically covers time between 1864 and 1923. Along with a series of rich familial details, the diary features extremely detailed commentary on local politics and the heated 1860 presidential election by a Lincoln supporter. Parker had the opportunity to meet Lincoln's opponent, Stephen Douglas, and described him at length on August 19, 1860: "His face looks as though he has been on a 'bender' for a month. It bears unmistakable evidence that he loves the bottle." In 1904, on his sixty-fifth birthday, Parker seems to have picked the volume up to retrospectively record the events of his life and times. He writes on April 11, 1904: "This is my 65th birthday and consequently this old book, intended to be a daily record of personal matters, has been neglected for nearly 38 years." In 1874, Parker purchased the ARLINGTON ADVOCATE, which he edited and operated for the next fifty years. For the centennial celebration of Arlington, in 1907, he wrote and published a history of the town. He lived not only through the Civil War and Lincoln's assassination, but through World War I and all points in between. With regard to the effect of the Great War on the newspaper business, he writes: "The World War into which the United States entered in 1917, made great changes in business methods of every sort, especially in the ranks of the employed. My foreman was one of the first to be called to service. The filling of this place tried my nerve. I finally secured a Mrs. Lum[?], who proved better than any man previously tried" (p.287). Parker lists the people of note whom he has had the good fortune to meet, among them many notable newspapermen, including Horace Greeley, James Gordon Bennett, and William Cullen Bryant; the aforementioned Stephen Douglas; and President Rutherford B. Hayes, with whom he spoke at length about the evils of drink. With many clippings and extra biographical information inserted. A topical index has been added by Parker at the front of the text. Parker wrote very detailed prose in a highly legible hand. A fascinating autobiographical chronicle.

The History ofEngland From the Ascension of James the Second

77 - London - Longmans, Green and Co.8.5 by 5.5, xxxvi, 685; xiii, 686; xiii, 744; xii, 829; vii, 398pp, 1860 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Volume V of The History of England is 'Edited by his Sister, Lady Trevelyan'. There is a 'Bound by Mudie' ink stamp on thefront free-endpaper of each volume. There is a nameplate for Reginald Brett on the front pastedown of each volume. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, PC, 1800 1859, was a British poet, historian and Whig politician and one of the two Members of Parliament for Edinburgh. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer, and on British history. Macaulays life was extensive, with careers in the legal profession, in politics, especially India, in literature and in history. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography describes him as a sensitive man, who hid a distaste of politics behind a touchy independence, whose impact was most felt on issues like Indian administration and copyright laws where his specialist knowledge helped sway votes. His ministerial work bored him. Macaulay was a literary man at the core, preferring drama and epic poetry to the banal of the everyday. He was never happier than in his study engaging in a dialogue with his favourite authors. Reginald Baliol Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher, GCVO, KCB, PC, DL, 1852 1930, was a historian and Liberal politician in the United Kingdom. Behind the scenes, he influenced many pre-World War I reforms carried out by Campbell-Bannerman and Asquith. Brett was offered many public offices, including the Viceroyalty of India and the Secretaryship for War, but declined. As a historian, Lord Esher, amongst others, published works on King Edward VII and Lord Kitchener. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with the very occasional spot, most prominent on the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is very good..

It also includes F. E. Engel's diary of the march from the Colorado River to Albuquerque. Pages 76-91 consist of a detailed tabular itinerary of the route from Fort Smith to the Colorado River."         Engraved Portrait in steel-plate mezzotint

Philadelphia: [no publisher named] [no date: 1860s]. - A sheet of cream cotton rag paper. 13.9 x 11.1 inches. Image: 11.1 x 9.3 in. Oval: 9.1 in. high. Near Fine with some minor wrinkles to lower margin; 4 tiny pin-holes: 1 in left margin, 3 in background just below top margin; these are visible only with light in rear of the paper. This is a magnificent early engraving of Lincoln. The photos give an outline of what to expect, but they don’t convey the full experience. There is no Victorian bric-a-brac, family members, Cabinet members, etc. to distract attention from the man himself. He is dignified in dress, but the light and focus are on his great strength of character combined with traces of youth in his forehead and his unruly hair. A commanding vital presence in exceptionally well-preserved condition; will be mailed between sheets of masonite for highest security in shipping. William Sartain (1843-1924) was the son of John Sartain (1808-1897) who came from England to become a central figure in the artistic life and establishment in Philadelphia during most of the 19th century; he was especially influencial in promoting mezzotints as an effective and popular form of illustration in books and magazines, as well as in separate prints; 4 of his children became artists. William went to high school and the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins and they remained friends for life; they traveled together to Europe in 1868. William studied there until 1875, when he returned to America and settled in New York where he pursued a long and successful career as a painter much influenced by contemporary French art. The National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution holds 7 portraits by William Sartain, all related to the Civil War: Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, Lincoln and Family, Grant and Family, Robert E. Lee, General P.G.T. Beauregard, and General George Thomas.

      J. Techener, Paris 1860 - Unique, Original, and Absolutely Elegant. 197 x 121 mm (7 3/4 x 4 3/4"). 2 p.l., xlv, [iii], 268, [4] pp. "Nouvelle Edition," THE ONLY COPY PRINTED ON VELLUM. LOVELY CONTEMPORARY TAN MOROCCO, SUMPTUOUSLY GILT, BY HARDY (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), covers gilt with wide dentelle frame composed of many floral and scrolling tools, gilt arms of the 12th Duke of Hamilton (1845-95) at center of each cover, raised bands, spine richly gilt, one black and one maroon morocco label, all edges gilt. WITH FIVE INSERTED SEPIA PEN-AND-WASH DRAWINGS THAT WERE USED AS THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR THE ENGRAVINGS in this work. Each page ruled in gold. Brunet I, 1705. Three tiny dark spots on front covering, a hint of humpbacked bowing to boards (as is typical of books on vellum), but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, the binding lustrous and virtually unworn, and the vellum quite clean, fresh, and bright. This is a unique copy of an appropriately luxurious edition of the memoirs of a noblewoman raised at the court of the Sun King. In the text Madame de Caylus (1673-1729) offers an insider's account at perhaps the most glittering court Europe has ever known. As the cousin of Madame de Maintenon, Louis XIV's morganatic wife, she was privy to all the intrigues surrounding the royal household. The fine drawings here are: the portrait of Madame de Caylus after a painting by Daullé in her lifetime; Madame de Montespan acting as Femme de Chambre to Mademoiselle de la Vallière; Reconciliation of the King with Madame de Montespan; Promenade of Madame de Maintenon and Madame de Montchevreuil in the Forest of Fontainebleu; and the Prince de Condé seized with smallpox. This work was first published by Voltaire in 1770, but the present edition is considered the best. Given this item's extraordinarily handsome binding, its distinction as the only copy printed on vellum, and the presence of the drawings used for the engravings to illustrate the work, one could not imagine a more sumptuous or a more special copy. "Nouvelle Edition," THE ONLY COPY PRINTED ON VELLUM [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Where can my nieces be?

n.p., ca. 1860 - Hablot K. Browne, "Phiz" (1815-1882) was an illustrator, painter, sporting artist and cartoonist. His career began in 1836 with his illustrations to Dickens's Sunday Under Three Heads, which led to his being selected to illustrate Pickwick Papers, and to a collaboration with Dickens lasting 28 years and involving 13 books. He was a prolific contributor to Punch, and other periodicals, where his cartoons and comic touch elicited enormous popularity. This is a particularly fresh and bright example of his work, probably done toward the end of his cartooning career (13 x 9-1/2 inches). Original watercolour and pencil, signed "Phiz" and inscribed as title. Fine condition. Bryant and Heneage, p. 35. Provenance: B.F.         Lives and Speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin

Follett, Foster & Co., 15C 1860 - This specific hardback book is in good condition with a brown design embossed hard board cover that has some moderate wear to the edges and corners (through to the board) with slight bumping and some scuffing to the cover boards and spine. It has a tight, intact sewn-in binding with no interior cracks. The pages are slightly yellowed with age and contain some underlining throughout. The acids from the pages have caused only minmal stains mainly around the illustrations. There are only a few pages which are not completely intact. This is a rare and remarkable book and is in good condition. We package all books in custom cardboard book boxes and ship daily with tracking numbers. ; This is an original edition of this very rare book and was issued prior to his presidency during the year he was nominated. The lithographed rendition of Lincoln at the front of the book depicts a much younger man than usually depicted and without beard. Hamlin served as Lincoln's Vice President. Although Lincoln was the 17th President Hamlin was the 15th Vice President of the United States and was the first Republican Vice President. He also served as Governor of Maine and is now buried in Bangor. An illustration of Hamlin is also contained within the book. The book also depicts the Republican Wigwam in Chicago. An inscription on the first blank end page of the book reads as follows: "To Mifs Laura A. Platt from Buckwheat Cakes, Aug 25/60(1860)" ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 320 pages [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Deckelbezügen; feines Exemplar.. First Edition of "The first monograph on experimental teratology" Warkany, Congenital Malformations, p.18 - A beautiful illustrated and very interesting volume on malformations and abnormalities by Peter Ludwig Panum (1820-1855), the great Danish physician, which is best remembered for his report on the epidemic of measles in the Faroes. In this monograph Panum said that Wolff was the first to represent abnormal development. Panum ponted out, for one thing, that malformations may be produced experimentally in a chicken foetus on exposure of the egg to certain conditions of temperature, showing the foetal malformations are not necessarily depended upon hereditary factors. The studies of Panum on monsters were highly admired by his contemporaries. - See Meisen, Danish Scientist, pp.134-137; Meyer, The Rise of Embryology, 225-26; Unrecorded by Waller, Osler. Rare.

Bound Volume of Handbills for Musical Performances at two German theaters: W. Diehm's Forsyth Street Conzert-halle and Steuben Haus in New York City

[New York]: Lauter & Becker. 1860-1862. Octavo. Quarter calf and marbled papercovered boards. Text in German. Spine perished, both boards detached, modest foxing and small chips and stains, particularly on the last couple of handbills, overall good or better. The volume contains 46 handbills for German musical comedies and light operas, as follows: 40 handbills printed rectos only for Wilhelm Diehm's Forsyth St. Conzert-halle (hand-numbered 2-41; apparently one is lacking) and six handbills printed rectos only for Steuben Haus in the Bowery (hand-numbered 42-47). Each show seems to have run for a week or two, and as they run consecutively, one can be reasonably certain that Steuben Haus suceeded the Forsyth Street Conzert-halle. The proprietor of Forsyth Street is listed as Nathaniel Rosenbaum, but Steuben Haus was founded and run by Sixtus Ludwig Kapff, a Wuerttemberg revolutionist who was forced to flee to the U.S when the 1848 movement was crushed. He served briefly in the Union Army before returning to New York City to found his theater. During the 19th Century, New York had the third largest German population of any city in the world, and musical theatre played an important role in the immigrant population's community, and one imagines even more so during the Civil War. Perhaps because of the language barriers, surprisingly little research has been done on the subject. A nice volume of ephemeral handbills that helps illustrate the vibrancy of the German musical theatre in daily immigrant life. .
