Loved, and Lost! The True Story of a Short Life. Told in Gossip Verse, and Illustrated

London: Day and Sons, circa, 1860. Octavo, 96 pp. (entirely lithographed, with full-page tinted lithographs in the text); very light spotting, but an excellent copy, recased in the original green cloth with new endpapers, all edges gilt. One of the earliest illustrated books written for children and published in Australia, this is a rare work - one of the rarest of all the prolific Meredith's publications in fact. Dedicated to her young son, Owen, and probably based on real events, it is a verse narrative of the short, incident-filled life of an Australian parakeet in the wild and in domestic captivity. The work is delightfully illustrated by the author, with each page offering delicate vignettes of bush and domestic life; in addition there are sixteen tinted lithographic plates recording the more significant episodes in the life of the parakeet hero.

Manuscript Letters - Nyasaland with David Livingstone

England, 1860. Westminster, 1860-1862. Set of four ALS relating to Bishop Mackenzie and the Church of England, one of which mentions a farewell service preceding his departure to Nyasaland. Three manuscript signed letters written and signed by Charles Frederick Mackenzie, first bishop of Central Africa, together with one manuscript signed letter written and signed by his sister Anne, all addressed to the Dean of Canterbury, at the time being Henry Alford. 8vo. Three letters are complete on double-leafs; one is clipped and mounted to unrelated covers, some creasing, otherwise in very good condition, with fascinating content.Three letters are written and signed by Charles Frederick Mackenzie prior to his departure to Central Africa to lead a mission as the first Bishop of Nyasaland - this having been arranged at the behest of Dr. David Livingstone. They deal with various matters of church and missions, primarily his plans to raise funds for Saint Augustine's College, which was a missionary college of the Church of England from 1848-1947, at the time of this letter still fairly new. Letters were written at his home address 79 Pall Mall in Westminster, on blue letterhead of the Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin Mission to Central Africa, and dated 28 April, 11 September, and 15 September 1860, respectively. [Following Dr. David Livingstone's request to Cambridge, Bishop Mackenzie took on the position of being the first missionary bishop in Nyasaland (now Malawi). To this end, in October 1860 he was commissioned at Canterbury Cathedral as the first missionary of the Universities Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). Within 3 months, on 1 January 1861, in St George's Cathedral, Cape Town, he was consecrated "Bishop of the Mission to the Tribes Dwelling in the Neighbourhood of the Lake Nyasa and River Shire".] Especially interesting, is a letter by the bishop's sister Anne, describing in great detail a lithograph of explorer Dr. David Livingstone erecting a cross at bishop Mackenzie's gravesite in Nyasaland, Africa in 1862, with further mention of communication with explorer John Kirk who travelled with Livingstone and became British administrator in Zanzibar. Penned on mourning paper and dated December 28, presumably 1862, some eleven months after her brother's death. [Anne Mackenzie was a writer, and for thirty one years, editor of the missionary magazine 'The Net Cast in Many Waters: Sketches from the Life of Missionaries', published in London from 1866 to 1896. Unmarried, she spent some time teaching at mission schools in South Africa before joining the Zambesi Mission of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa, which was led by her brother. She died in 1877.] The recipient of all described correpsondence is Henry Alford (1810-1871), English churchman, theologian, textual critic, scholar, poet, hymnodist, writer, and at the time Dean of Canterbury. In March 1857 Lord Palmerston had advanced him to the deanery of Canterbury, where, till his death, he lived the same energetic and diverse lifestyle as ever. Alford was friends with the most eminent of his contemporaries. Excerpts from the letters: Charles Frederick Mackenzie. 79 Pall Mall. 11 September 1860. "... to have a farewell service with Holy Communion in Canterbury Cathedral, on Oct. 2. I suppose too many take for granted that the collection made at the offer tray, will be directed to the funds of this mission. I have been anxious to give a helping hand at the same time to the local... viz the native wing for S. Augustine's Coll... I understand you are now on the Continent but you will get this on your return..." Charles Frederick Mackenzie. 79 Pall Mall. 15 September 1860. "...You will now have heard from the Warden that he declines my idea of having an offering made for St. Augustine's new wing. I dare say he is right.... The Bp of Chichester will probably be at Canterbury on the Monday night.." Anne Mackenzie. "93 Via del Corso [Rome?]. December 28, circa 1861. "Dear Mr. Dean, Your cathedral was the last church in England in which my brother worshipped, and your garden is so associated with him that I venture to send you a sketch of his grave at the Ruo River, with D. Livingstone putting up a rude cross on it as he promised he would do. The likeness are very good. D. Livingstone himself seems to be gazing at the remains of the Bishop whom he loved, with a true and sorrowing look. His brother is beside him. The other two figures are Sr Kirk... and Sr Mellor who sent me the original sketch, from which a friend made this lithograph. The clothed native is a Johanna man, one of Livingstone's crew... I saw Mr. Kirk in London... he had spent several days with them [Portuguese] at Chibisa?'s before he left the country..." [The University of Southern California holds a photograph of Mackenzie's gravesite in the jungle.] Born in Peebleshire, Scotland in 1825, Charles Frederick Frazier Mackenzie (1825-1862) was a Church of England bishop, the first Bishop of Central Africa. He is commemorated in some Anglican Church Calendars. Mackenzie was educated at St John?'s College and Caius College, Cambridge. He left England for Natal in 1855, to serve as archdeacon to Bishop John William Colenso, working among the English settlers there until 1859. Following Dr. Within 3 months, on 1 January 1861, in St George's Cathedral, Cape Town, he was consecrated "Bishop of the Mission to the Tribes Dwelling in the Neighbourhood of the Lake Nyasa and River Shire". Mackenzie led the Mission?'s first expedition up the Zambezi River into Nyasaland (now Malawi) and established a base near Lake Nyasa. The missionaries?' preaching of the Gospel and their efforts to secure the release of slaves (who formed the core of Bishop Mackenzie?'s mission community) led them into conflict with native leaders and Portuguese colonists and slave traders. The mission and the people among whom they lived and ministered, were under constant threat of drought, famine, and malaria. Eventually the mission?'s supply of quinine was exhausted, and in an outbreak of malaria that claimed the lives of three others in his missionary party and of many natives, Bishop Mackenzie died on 31 January 1862 only one year after his consecration.. Very Good.

Italian Peasant Woman in Scenic Landscape

1860. Watercolour mounted on sheet of light gray paper. Very good condition apart from a 5/8" tear in the top margin and some light soiling and minor foxing in the margins. A charming image of an Italian peasant woman adorned in native dress. This stunning watercolour is a beautiful example of the peasant genre of painting that was popular during the mid-nineteenth-century and epitomized by the works of artists such as Jules Breton (1827-1906), William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875). In this romanticized portrayal of rural life, a colourfully dressed peasant woman is pictured amidst a picturesque seaside landscape engaged in her daily chores. Works such as this not only exalted the dignified, pure life of the noble peasant, but also celebrated the beauty of the native countryside. They were most likely sold to tourists as souvenirs of their travels.

Arm for the Right; or, the Invalid's Last Appeal

[Haverhill, Mass.?: no publisher. circa 1860-1870]. First. First edition. Broadside. Approximately 12" x 9". Modest but pervasive chipping and tears confined to the margins, good or better. 21 stanzas of verse and two paragraphs of explanation from a lady of Haverhill, Massachusetts, who here stands up in verse for her right to salubrious peace and quiet in the face of the repeated cacophonous depredations of the Haverhill Rifle Club---or as she has it in her note, "It is now nearly nine months since I have been obliged, let me be ever so sick and helpless, to leave my room or bed at a moment's warning, and flee before the Rifle Club, in order to save my life and reason. And this has been done repeatedly when I have not been able to sit up more than five or ten minutes during the day after leaving the carriage. I should have entered a complaint at the commencement, but the Police Judge, the protector of the public peace and the town representative of Justice, was at the head of this outrage, and could not sustain the cause of right and humanity without involving himself in the overthrow." That Smith's outrage should find vent in verse is of course curious but not perhaps atypical of her time---certainly the ringing sentiments suit themselves to lyric: "Beneath the dark banner Of vice they're arrayed, And on Guilt and Injustice Their footsteps are stayed. Shouting in triumph, As onward they go, To inflict on the helpless New suffering and woe." Smith appears to have published a similarly gloomy collection of verse, Haverhill in Eclipse (Newburyport, 1870) and another scarce broadside aimed against local corruption, A New Year's address to the true hearted citizens and voters of Haverhill. OCLC notes two locations for this rare appeal. .

        Spinale Kinderlähmung. Monographie.

      - 2., umgearb. u. verm. Aufl., - Stuttgart, J.G. - - "In 1940 Heine (1799-1879) gave the first description of acute anterior polyomelitus in a slender monograph of 78 pages. "Twenty years later (1860) in a much enlarged edition Heine gathered again his rich experiences, announcing many new methods and observations. He called his new monograph "Spinale Kinderlähmung" as he assumed the seat of the disease to be in the spinal cord --- These tow monographs by Heine, especially the second of 1860 . must be considered true classics . "Valentin - After a brief account of the acute or primary stage comes a detailed description of the second or paralytic stage with numerous clinical histories of the different forms of paralysis, followed by sections on etiology and pathologic anatomy, differential diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, especially by orthopaedics means. The 29 lithographic figures illustrate deformities and apparatus. The book contains numerous references to the literature. (Fischbein et al) - - Valentin, Gesch. d.         Collection of 400 Photographs from a Camden, New Jersey Family

Camden, New Jersey. 1860-1960s. A collection of more than 400 photos from a Camden, New Jersey family including 40 Civil War-era tintypes, 30 cabinet cards, and the rest various different format photographs taken between 1900 and the early 1960s, various sizes and with a few back marks from Virginia, but most from the Philadelphia, Camden, and Trenton areas. The photos are generally very good or better with some photos clipped at the corners from mounting, wear to some of the edges, and a few of the tintypes darkening or with their finish peeling. The photos feature matron Mary A. Fleming and the extended families of her daughters Elizabeth Nardin, Bessie W. Steelman, and Emma Gordon, including their husbands, children, and relations in various formal and candid shots: posing with pets, laughing with friends, kids playing, a flood, a house being built (likely due to the flood), and others. Of note are about a dozen military-related photographs featuring: six Civil War soldiers each posing in uniform; four of World War I soldiers in formation and training; a group shot of World War II sailors posing on the deck of a ship; and four of USO entertainers performing at an army hospital. The photos are accompanied by a few handwritten notes referencing various family members, as well as what was once a red velvet photo album, now only a tattered remnant of its former self, with a handful of additional scattered photos still intact. A nice collection of photos documenting 100 years of a New Jersey family's history. .

Autograph letter signed, probably to Latimer Clark

1860. Very Good. Hughes, David Edward (1830-1900). A.L.s. to an unidentified recipient, possibly Latimer Clark. Paris, October 1, 1860. 2pp. 206 x 133 mm. Holes punched in upper margin, with tears at holes, remains of mounting present. Provenance: Latimer Clark.Hughes, an inventor and experimental researcher in electricity and magnetism, is best known for his invention of the microphone in 1878. His first successful invention was an improvement of R. E. House's automatic printing telegraph (1846); completed in 1855, Hughes's device was quickly adopted in both America and Europe. In 1860 the French government purchased Hughes's automatic telegraph for use on their lines. The present letter discusses its installation:"I have just returned from Bordeaux where I have been to give the necessary instructions to work my Inst[rument]. from there to Paris (distance 5.75 kilometres) and the line is now working first rate with my Inst. They have not yet commenced transmitting the regular business merely sending old messages for practice. I think they intend commencing tomorrow as they are sufficiently advanced to do it well. . . ."The Insts. we have now are not very good being very badly made but they answer well enough for demonstration. The new Insts. of Mr. Fremont will be finished in about 2 weeks. They will take the place of the old ones. Then I shall be at liberty to bring them to England and they will be at your disposal if you wish it. . . ." Origins of Cyberspace 162

CHROMOLITHOGRAPH OF A YOUNG BLACK BOY, SEATED ON A BARREL, WARMING HIS HANDS BY A COAL STOVE].

[Np. ca. ]. 1860 - 17 1/2 x 12 inches. Minor edge wear. Moderate marginal foxing. Very good. Mounted on original stiff card, matted, 23 x 17 1/2 inches. Archival matting, and protected with Mylar sheet. An engaging unattributed chromolithograph showing a young black boy sitting on a small barrel warming his hands in front of an open coal stove. The image is captioned in contemporary pencil in the upper left margin: "Master James Crow." Despite this annotation, this image is in no way denigrating. It is a well- realized, handsomely composed picture; the boy is wearing neat but worn clothes, and looks sideways toward the viewer with an engaging smile. The small coal stove radiates flame from its open mouth, while a small hand bellows lies on the floor nearby. A handsome and interesting image.

Gatherings of a Naturalist in Australasia... Gatherings of a Naturalist in Australasia; being observations principally on the animal and vegetable productions of New South Wales, New Zealand, and some of the Austral Islands

London: John Van Voorst, 1860. Octavo, with eight handcoloured lithograph plates by George French Angas; a very good copy in green half morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. With coloured lithographs after Angas. First edition: a handsome copy of this popular book by the well-travelled naturalist. "The drawings, with a few exceptions, are from the accurate pencil of Mr. G.F. Angas, well known for his correct delineations of subjects of Natural History, and the author of three splendid works illustrative of the scenery and natives of New Zealand, South Australia and Southern Africa" (Preface). The "few exceptions" are from originals by Thomas Baines and Joseph Wolf; together they represent three of the foremost artists of the period.Dr George Bennett first visited New South Wales in 1829 and settled in Sydney in 1836. As with many medically trained men from previous centuries, he was an ardent natural scientist, and became involved with the Australian Museum and Acclimatisation Society. He was also the Sydney agent for British ornithologist John Gould.Bennett's book is a practical and well-illustrated guide to the productions of Australia and an active attempt to protect certain species such as the Echidna, the Emu and the Notornis. This is a wonderful book, with commentary on life and natural history in colonial Australia. From the collection of Robert Edwards.
