In our days, it has been replaced by "Al Azarieh building", built in the 1950's and is now facing the maronite "St Georges Cathedral", seen in this 1930's postcard. It lies in "Emir Béchir" street in the very heart of downtown Beirut.

        Wise men]

Canton c. 1860 - A set of 4 watercolour and gouache studies on pith paper, each surrounded by blue fabric borders. Dimensions: each approximately 215 by 150mm (8.5 by 6 inches). Pith seems not to have been adopted for painting until about 1820. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith (often erroneously called "rice paper" or "mulberry pith") come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Pith presumably came into use for painting to satisfy the increasing demand for small, inexpensive and easily transported souvenirs, following the massive growth in the China Trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Paintings in oils, on board and canvas were costly and difficult to carry home. Earlier and more prestigious export water-colours had often been on a larger scale and painted on fine Chinese paper or on paper imported from Europe. The albums of pith paintings (and later the little glass-fronted boxes) were inexpensive, light, easy to pack and gave the pictures some protection on the long voyage home. Because many were sold in albums and hence protected from the light, they retain their bright colours to this day. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses, some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore coloured flowers made from pith in their hair. For use in painting, it is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom, if ever, measure more than about 30cms by 20cms. The sheets are dried, trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Because of the nature of pith and its cellular structure, the gouache used by the Chinese sat on the surface and produced a bright and even sparkling effect. Very fine detail could be achieved but pith did not lend itself to the flat wash of colour favoured for European watercolours. Carl Crossman in his book The Decorative Arts of the China Trade (originally published under the title The China Trade) gives an excellent list of export painters with a note of those known to have painted on pith. These include Tingqua, Sunqua and Youqua. From 1757 until 1842 Canton was the only Chinese port open to trade with the west and it is no surprise that of the eight studios identified by Crossman as producing works on pith, six were in Canton. It seems that the 1830s and 1840s may have been the heyday of pith painting. The international trading bases, the waterfront 'factories' on the 'Hongs' in Canton, where they were produced, were partially burnt during the First Opium War (1839-41) and totally destroyed in a fire of 1856. The foreign trading companies then moved to Honan and subsequently put up splendid new offices on reclaimed land at Shamian Island, a little up river. As the result of the Treaty of Nanking, in 1842 additional Chinese ports were opened up for foreign trade and Hong Kong was established as a major trading centre. By 1860 references to China in the Illustrated London News, plentiful three years earlier, were few and far between. That is not to say that painting on pith ceased. Nicholas the second was given paintings on pith when he visite [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Boston. August 3, 1860.. Broadside, 14 x 9 inches. Some light foxing. Old fold lines. Some small chips and tears around the edges. Very good. Broadside advertising the contents of the tanks at the Boston Aquarial Gardens, later renamed the Boston Aquarial and Zoological Gardens. When first established in 1859 by James Cutting, the Gardens were devoted solely to marine life. In the spring of 1860, it undertook a change in direction with the inclusion of zoology, as is already evidenced in this broadside, which advertises kangaroos, bears, monkeys, rats, as well as several species of birds and reptiles. The Gardens was acquired by P.T. Barnum in the summer of 1862 and closed in 1863, its holdings relocated to Barnum's museum in New York. The contents of forty tanks are listed here, as well as fourteen cases holding zoological life. Posting open hours of 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., with a daily fish-feeding at 11 A.M., the broadside warns patrons to "always look through that part of the glass nearest the object" in order to prevent dizziness.         Manuscript map of Roxbury Vermont

[ Roxbury, Vermont ] 1860 - First Edition. An inked manuscript map of Roxbury Vermont on a thick blotter like paper. 17 x 14 1/2 inches edge to edge. There are four large edge chips ans some water damage, affecting the content. It includes 176 identifiable names laid out in a mostly square grid pattern. There are another 30 or so names that are partially missing or have water staining making clear reading difficult if not impossible. There are, in addition to inked names, penciled numbers in some grids - the purpose is unknown. Roxbury VT was founded in August 1781. We were able to determine this manuscript map was the town of Roxbury VT by comparing the names on the map to references online and in "The History of the Towns of Plainfield, Roxbury, and Fayston [Vermont], Montpelier, VT, 1882 (a few copied pages provided with matches highlighted). The rear of the map notes "Elijah Winch Plann of Roxbury". Those same references helped us find Elijah, who was a Town Selectmen in 1851, 58, and 1860. And a constable and collector of taxes in 1843. And a "Lister" in 1845, '57, '62, and 1863. He was also a Justice of the Peace in 1850, 51, 52, 53, 57, 58, 62, and 44. Finally he was a town representative in 1854. As a Lister (definition from Colonial Occupation webpage) he would have been responsible for tracking property and related taxes. How closely this document relates to an actual layout of the town would be a fascinating research project, if comparables could even be found. A useful tool for reviewing early town layouts, genealogical records, and related scholarship. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Np. ca. 1860].. 17 1/2 x 12 inches. Minor edge wear. Moderate marginal foxing. Very good. Mounted on original stiff card, matted, 23 x 17 1/2 inches. Archival matting, and protected with Mylar sheet. An engaging unattributed chromolithograph showing a young black boy sitting on a small barrel warming his hands in front of an open coal stove. The image is captioned in contemporary pencil in the upper left margin: "Master James Crow." Despite this annotation, this image is in no way denigrating. It is a well- realized, handsomely composed picture; the boy is wearing neat but worn clothes, and looks sideways toward the viewer with an engaging smile. The small coal stove radiates flame from its open mouth, while a small hand bellows lies on the floor nearby. A handsome and interesting image.

        [Photo Album]: William Zay Family

[Mansfield, Ohio. circa 1860-1890]. Small thick quarto, approximately 5.5" x 6.75". Contemporary full morocco, both boards with an elaborate design in deep relief, brass clasps with etched designs, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, printed moire endleaves. Very good with moderate rubbing. A nicely made album of family portraits, containing 27 original albumen photographs laid into the slots. Most are identified with small captions in pencil (two empty slots are also captioned). Moderate fading to some photographs, scattered soiling and tears to the margins, five photos have partially shifted in their slots, overall good or better. The photographs document the life and family of William Zay, a German-born immigrant and photographer from Mansfield, Ohio, from the Civil War through 1890. They include a portrait of the young Zay in uniform, when he served in the 99th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1864), and later portraits of Zay, his wife Flora, and their children (Nellie and Clara). Also included are portraits of Zay's brother Frederick (an artist and photographer who worked in partnership with William), and related family. After the Civil War, Zay became a successful photographer, and it is likely that this album was made at or for his studio. A unique piece of Midwestern Americana. .

Journal Composed and Written by S. D. Rickey, Washington Penna., 1860. "Perseverence" "Order" "Punctuality"

Washington, PA. 1860. Hardcover. Very Good +. 1860 Hardcover quarto, 157pp (hand-paginated). Rebound in modern brown buckram with stamped title on the spine. Blind stamp of the Washington, PA notary on the introduction page, date unknown. Binding VG+ with minor shelfwear, contents firmly in place. Written in a delicate and superb hand, with decorative title page. This is a handwritten journal documenting the life of the young S. D. Rickey from April 1st, 1860, through January 25th, 1861, with entries every day for the majority of the book. Born November 14, 1840 in Claysville, PA, it appears that Ricky was a manager or simply a clerk at a mercantile in the city of Washington, Pennsylvania. Some of his entries reflect a changing landscape of the city: in his entry for Monday, April 3 he writes, "The towns people are still engaged in moving, houses are being torn down and others rebuilt... This was a beautiful moonlight for lovers to talk of love and stars above," and the next day remarks on the demolition of the Langly building where he served his first years of clerkship. Other entries contemplate the weather, with remarks such as, "The wind must have been confined in some lonely cave for a century past. Today I think they have been set free, for today they seemed to be master of everything," and, "There was said to be the hardest thunder last night, that has been known for years." He also speaks of the everyday duties of running the shop, selling coats and vests, arranging dry goods, and "[hiring] a colored gent to wash all the windows." He speaks of a building a guitar, and later of playing it in leisure time. On Wednesday, November 14, he turns 20 years of age, and records his last regular entry. There is a long melancholy interlude, undated, between then and the last entry of January 25th, 1861. This interlude begins, "Life with its changes, anxieties, and misfortunes, is apt to suggest to our minds the checkered diversity of a rambling brook.... Mans' hopes and aspirations seem fluctuating as the autumn leaves, liable at any moment to be tossed in every direction and broken by every passing gale... We find the same evidence of the mutability of all things... It is natural for us to admire the depth of thought, the flashes of fancy, and the irresistible force of Logic, the result of an intelligent mind. But we soon discover the opposite of that scene when we visit the abode of the maniac and look upon the clanking chains that bind him to his cell," and thus continues to speak of the "The scream of the idiot," and a "long and tiresome farewell to the terrestrial beauties of a vain world." A generally pleasant diary ending with some darker overtones, and a wealth of insight into the everyday life of a shopkeeper and Western Pennsylvania citizen.

Important Astronomy letter of famed Royal Observatory Astronomer B.G. Airy

Royal Observatory, London, July 5, 1860 "The letter written on Royal Observatory Greenwich, London S.E. stationery reads in full, ""Dear Sir, I am obliged to reply in extreme haste to your letters of March 23 and April 12, which I have been compelled to put off till I am just starting for the total eclipse of the sun. (I will mention that, if you would write successive short letters, I could probably attend to everyone with little delay.) Your note about Lescashault sent to R. Astronomical Society. Your clear view of the mottling of the Sun's disk is a certain sign that you saw it very well. The Galvanic storm was observed here in great force. I believe that here also the force of the earth was diminished. It is to be desired that the Telegraph Clerks should record the times, directions and magnitudes, of the disturbances of their needles. Your reports on Equatorial, Refraction, Tables and transit Circle, though not perfectly satisfactory, are very interesting. There can be no doubt of the good policy of your removing a microscope from the range of lamp-heat: and I think that your general policy of using 5 microscopes (as certainly not used in the original division) is good. But I am led, by my own examination, to have great trust in Simms' dividing engine. (Simms died a few weeks ago, I think his son will prove an able man). I cannot tell you how difficult, or rather how impossible, it is, to learn anything about the silk for the magnets. I never had any of Sabine's mountings, there is no person in London who has used them; and Sabine himself professes to know nothing or remember nothing about them. Surely you could find silk in India (the fibres in the first process of union by the manufacturer). In regard to photography, probably you will have no difficulty when you have discovered the proper rules; but these rules buts be different from ours. A temperature of 80 or 90 makes our ordinary photographing impracticable. I have never found change of illumination error from change of illumination. The application of the heat of a lamp may doubtless have some effect: and a small effect may be produced by illuminating one side of a wire rather than another. I am, dear sir, very faithfully yours, B.G. Airy."" This letter was purchased in 1950 form the Carnegie bookshop."

In Congress, July 4th, 1776 : the Unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America

Chicago and New York: Horace Thayer and Rufus Blanchard, 1860. Very Good. 29 1/4 x 43 inches (broadside dimensions). Lithographed broadside attached to wooden rods ready for hanging. Some loss to borders and minor paper loss throughout, professionally conserved by Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) removing old cloth and varnish, and conserving backed with toned Japanese tissue and with edging re-attached (a full conservation report including before and after photographs will be provided to the new owner.) The earliest date on the lithograph is 1818 but the story of it's publication is much more interesting. Where we'd normally expect the copyright statement we find instead: "Copied from the Declaration of Independence in the Department of State and Published by Benjamin Owen Tyler, Professor of Penmanship, City of Washington, 1818" and then "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the Facsimiles Exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every Capital as in the original." and then on the far right hand : "Engraved by Peter Maverick, Newark, N. J." Lower left shows "Printed by Lang & Laing, 117 Fulton St. N.Y." In the center of the green ornamental border on bottom is "Published by Horace Thayer, No 18 Beekman St. New York and Rufus Blanchard, Chicago Illinois" Finally in very small type just under the vignette "First Blow of Liberty" is a caption (the real copyright notice): "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1860 by H. Thayer in the Clerks office ... " An adaptation of Tyler's famous 1818 broadside, with Trumbull's painting inserted below "AMERICA" at the top of the lithograph, and a key for Trumbulls work at the bottom. Additionally, there is a new vignette "The first blow for Liberty" inserted above the key, in the bottom center of the facsimile signature field. Additionally, the whole is surrounded by a green border of grape vines and clusters. This presentation "amped up" the early Tyler 1818 broadside, providing it with a more visual appeal and additional marketing points. Bidwell's "American History in Image and Text" provides an interesting view into the competition between purveyors of various Declarations, something which happened from the very beginning with competing entrepeneurs trying to create (and later capitalize) on the public's love of the most visual representation they had of their new country. The fact that this highly decorative approach survived (and indeed flourished) in various forms as late as 1860 is a testament to the level of interest, and the creativity of the hucksters bent on out-performing their fellow creators. Bidwell contains has a select list of Declarations at the end, and in a note to #2 (The Tyler, page 287) he indicates he has seen a copy very similar to the one we offer here, but with a slightly different imprint (Printed by Lang & Cooper rather than Lang & Laing as here, and Thayer at No 36 Beekman rather than No 18 Beekman as here). Scarce, with six locations found in OCLC/Worldcat - mass historical, peabody essex, john carter brown, colonial williamsburg, library of virginia and the university virginia (Albert H. Small deposit).
