THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER Or Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures.

Imprint & edition unknown, circa 1860.. Circa 1860, imprint and edition would have been on original covers which are missing. Rebound long ago in plain mauve cloth, small 4to, page size 255 x 188 mm, 10 x 7¼ inches. 24 pages of hand coloured illustrations, all but Shock-Headed Peter reproduce the familiar post 1858 designs still used until recently. Shock-Headed Peter himself has a huge mass of long straight hair down to his ankles and he has a heavy fringe to his forehead (see image). Original covers lacking, cloth discoloured and soiled, slightly frayed at head and tail of spine and corners. Margins lightly soiled and lightly thumbed throughout, some light foxing, tiny chips to lower corners, many short closed margin tears, one 70 mm (2¾") closed tear affecting blank area only and a few at lower inner edge, neatly mended on verso with archival tape, small old paper mends on reverse of 2 pages, a few ink spots to 1 blank page, pale brown staining to 1 illustration and facing blank (pressed flowers - see image). A good copy of a scarce item printed on thin poor quality paper. The illustration of Shock-Headed Peter with ankle length hair is very close to a second design made by Hoffmann in 1858 (see Hurlimann, Three Centuries, plate VI lower right, facing page 55 and see Bilderwelt page 238), and which was used by Trim in Pierre l'Ebouriffé (1860). This illustration is not recorded in an English edition. Ours seems very early for the little cross and soup tureen in The Story of Augustus are printed as in the German version: "Kaspar" and "Suppe" whereas later versions have:"Augustus" and "Soup". MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

White headed Eagle Falco Leucocephalus (Linn.) Male Yellow Cat-fish

New York: J. Bien, c.1860. First Bien Edition. Near Fine. John James Audubon. Double-elephant Folio (39 9/16" x 27 1/16"; image: 37 1/8" x 25 1/2"), "White headed Eagle Falco Leucocephalus. Linn. Male. Yellow Cat-fish" (numbered in upper right "Plate 14") from The Birds of America, unwaterrmarked as issued, first-run chromolithograph with hand-coloring, J. Bien edition, 1860. For many collectors, one of the most desireable--yet affordable--plates of John James Audubon's "Birds of America" is this "White headed Eagle" IPlate 14)--our national bird--from the chromolithographed edition prepared by Julius Bien.Julius Bien was a New York printer who had mastered the increasingly popular field of chromolithography, a recent advance in print-making technology. Using a multi-stage process, he and his workers transferred colored images from Havells original copper-engraved plates onto six or more lithographic stones. Then, to fully bring out the wonderful colors and textures of Audubon's majesterial plates, Bien employed skilled finishing and touch-up artists to add hand-drawn lithography and coloring to recreate the subtleties of the Havell engravings. The Bien edition was created between 1858 and 1860, just before the Civil War. Initial print-runs were made under the supervision of Julius Bien and John Woodhouse Audubon. When war began, however, production ceased, so that only 150 plates on 105 sheets were actually completed. The edition was undersubscribed, so John Woodhouse Audubon suffered bankruptcy. Thereafter, a few incomplete sets were printed by others.Precisely derived from the enormous "double-elephant" folio plates of the Havell edition which was engraved on handmade, watermarked paper and hand-colored, the chromolithographic plates by Bien were exceptional examples of early large color printing. Indeed, the Bien edition became the largest color plate book published in America. Because the Bien edition of Audubons Birds of America was never fully completed, it has become the rarest of Audubon folios. Experts estimate that fewer than seventy original folios were completed during the initial printing of the Bien folios. Consider, that In 1976, Waldemar Fries was able to inventory only 49 original bound copies of the Bien edition. Our plate of the impressive "White headed Eagle" is from that initial printing. We removed our eagle from a matted, glazed, and framed piece that had once hung in a distinguished Southern estate. We had it professionally conserved; then properly rematted with acid-free highest quality stock. We recommend that purchaser's have the piece framed and glazed (ideally with Museum grade UV-protected glass) on their end to conform to their needs. By not shipping a glazed and framed piece, the integrity of such a fine, large print is also better ensured. At some point before it was framed, our "Bald Eagle" was disbound from a bound set thus leaving 13 thread-holes along the plate's upper margin. These don't affect the wonderful chromolithographic image; nor do they show because the plate has been properly matted. There are also a few minor smudges in the plate margins--and some old fingerprint stains on the edges of the blank verso--which do not detract from the bright lithograph with its subtle brown-black-green-yellow coloration and sharp registration. Compare our fine copy with others selling for upwards of $18,000.

        Herr Vogt.

London, 1860. 8vo. Bound with the original front wrapper in a fitting contemporary simple half cloth with handwritten paper title-label to spine. Internally very nice and clean. Old German library stamp to blank bottom verso of title-page. Inner hinge slightly weak. VI, 191, (1, -errata) pp.. The rare first edition of Marx' landmark defense against defamation, a seminal work in his struggle for a new human society. Written in the midst of his writing of "The Capital", "Herr Vogt" constitutes the work that took precedence over this most important critique of political economy and the work that gives us one of the most profound insights into the mind of the great Marx. "Herr Vogt" is furthermore the work that we have to thank for the influence that "The Capital" and Marxist socialism did come to have upon our society. "In 1857, Karl Marx resumed work on his critique of political economy, a process that culminated in the publication of "Capital" a decade later. He wrote a rough draft (the "Grundrisse") in 1857 and 1858, parts of which he then reworked into the "Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy", which was published in June 1859. Then, in 1861 through 1863, he wrote a revised draft of the whole of "Capital", which was followed by a more polished draft written during 1864 and 1865. Finally, he revised the first volume yet again, during 1866 and 1867. It appeared in September, 1867.The careful reader will have noticed a rather lengthy gap in this chronology. From the second half of 1859 through 1860, Marx was not working on his critique of political economy. What was he doing instead? What was so important, so much more of an urgent priority than his theoretical work? The answer is that Marx was fighting back against Carl Vogt's defamatory attack. He fought back in order to defend his reputation and that of his "party." ... " Herr Vogt", the book Marx wrote in order to set the record straight." (Klimann, Marx' Struggle Against Defamation).Vogt was a prominent radical German politician and materialist philosopher who had immigrated to Switzerland, where he served in parliament and was also a professor of geology. His position on the 1859 war over Italian unification had a pro-French tilt, which resulted in the publication of a newspaper article and an anonymous pamphlet that alleged (correctly) that Vogt was being paid by the French government. Vogt believed Marx to be the source of the allegation and the author of the pamphlet.Vogt fought back by attacking Marx. He published a short book that described Marx as the leader of a band of blackmailers who demanded payment in return for keeping quiet about their victims' revolutionary histories. The book also contained a number of false and harmful allegations against Marx, and Vogt did everything in his power to destroy Marx' reputation. Not only did he attack Marx personally, he also falsified facts and made up untrue allegations to libel the Communist League, portraying its members as conspirators in secret contact with the police and accusing Marx of personal motives. There is no doubt that this work of slander put both Marx' own future as well as that of the Communist League at stake. "Ferdinand Lassalle warned Marx that Vogt's book "will do great harm to yourself and to the whole party, for it relies in a deceptive way upon half-truths," and said that "something must be done" in response (quoted in Rubel 1980, p. 53). Frederick Engels also urged Marx to respond quickly, and he provided a good deal of assistance when Marx wrote "Herr Vogt"....Carl Vogt and the circumstances that gave rise to his defamatory attack against Marx and his "party" are dead and gone. But "Herr Vogt" and Marx's battle against defamation remain living exemplars of how one responds in a genuinely Marx-ian way-i.e., the way of Marx. Do not separate theory from practice, or philosophy from organization. Do not retreat to the ivory tower or suffer attacks in silence; set the record straight. Use the bourgeois courts if necessary. Enlist the assistance of others." (Klimann)."Marx's Herr Vogt, almost entirely unknown in the English-speaking world. It is nevertheless one of the most brilliant of his writings. Engels considered it better than the Eighteenth Brumaire; Lassalle spoke of it as "a masterpiece in every respect"; Ryazanov thought that "in all literature there is no equal to this book"; Mehring rightly wrote of its "being highly instructive even today"." (Karl Marx on Herr Vogt - from The New International, Vol. X No. 8, August 1944, pp. 257-260. Transcribed & marked up by Einde O'Callaghan for ETOL)

        A Tale of Two Cities.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1860. First edition, first issue with p. 213 misnumbered "113," the signature mark "b" at the foot of the plate list, and the misspelling "affetcionately" on line 12, p. 134. Octavo, bound in three quarters calf over marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Sixteen plates after H.K. Browne including frontispiece and title vignette. In very good condition with some dampstaining to lower right margin, text and plates. The most famous and possibly the most popular of Dickens's novels, A Tale of Two Cities shows a master of dramatic narrative extracting gold from the ore of history. If the bloody tableau of the French Revolution were not in itself sufficient for a dozen novels, Dickens added to it a professional resurrectionist, an authentic ogress, and an antihero as convincingly flawed as any in modern literature. Here, too, are all of Dickens's recurring themes -- imprisonment, injustice, and cataclysmic violence, resurrection and the renunciation that makes renewal possible.

Political Debates between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas, In the Celebrated Campaign of 1858, in Illinois.

Columbus: Follett, Foster and Company, 1860. First edition, first issue, with no advertisements, no rule above the publisher's imprint on the copyright page, and with numeral 2 at the bottom of page 17. Octavo, original publisher's brown cloth. Some intermittent foxing, otherwise fresh with some rubbing to the cloth. he began collecting a scrapbook of his best speeches, particularly those from the just-concluded campaign against Douglas, for possible inclusion in a book. Assiduously pasting newspaper accounts of the debates into the scrapbook, Lincoln cast about for a publisher. Initial efforts failed, mainly because Lincoln wanted the book printed in Springfield, which had no local publishing or printing facilities. Eventually, however, the Columbus, Ohio, firm of Follett, Foster & Company showed interest, and he began preparing the first edition... Somewhat surprisingly for an attorney, Lincoln did not seek Douglas' permission to publish a book of their combined speeches, although Douglas was later given the last-minute opportunity--he declined--to make corrections to his own remarks" (Morris, 121).

Light waterstaining in upper and lower corners and outer margin, old marginal trim to title page, otherwise a beautiful copy.THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ANNUAL BASEBALL GUIDE. BY THE FATHER OF BASEBAL, HENRY CHADWICK—HIS PERSONAL COPY.SIGNED "HENRY CHADWICK / CLIPPER OFFICE" ON FRONT FLYLEAF. With letter of authenticity, dated October 14, 1925, by John T. Doyle, President, American Sports Publishing Company, publisher of Spalding sport guides, who was a friend and colleague of Chadwick. In 1858 Chadwick became the first baseball editor of a newspaper, which he held at the New York Clipper. Hence, the inscription "Clipper Office" accompanying his signature.RULES OF THE GAME WHICH APPEAR IN THIS 1860 GUIDE:• The ball must be pitched, not jerked or thrown to the bat.• The striker is out after swinging and missing three balls if the behind catches the third strike on the fly or first bounce.• If three balls are struck at, and missed, and the last one is not caught, either flying or upon the first bound, it shall be considered fair, and the striker must attempt to make his run.• The striker is out if a fair ball is struck, and the ball is caught either without having touched the ground, or upon the first bound.• If an adversary stops a ball with his hat or cap, or takes it from the hands of a party not engaged in the game, no player can be put out unless the ball shall first have settled in the hands of the pitcher.• Clubs may adopt such rules respecting balls knocked beyond or outside of bounds of the field, as circumstances of the ground may demand; and these rules shall govern all matches played upon the ground, provided that they are distinctly made known to every player and umpire, previous to the commencement of the game.• The player is out if the ball is in the hands of a base tender before the runner steps on the base.• If two ballists are already out, no player running home at the time the ball is struck can make ace if the striker is put out.• The hurler must deliver the ball as near as possible over the center of home for the striker.• Foul balls do not count as strikes.• Any ball first touching the ground or touched by a player within the base lines is fair, even if it goes foul thereafter.• An ace shall be tallied when a base runner steps on the home base.• No person engaged in a match, either as umpire, scorer or player shall be, either directly or indirectly, interested in any bet upon the game.HISTORY OF BEADLE’S GUIDES: Beadle’s is the earliest set of baseball guides, published annually from 1860 to 1881. Chadwick was its editor. It ceased publication in 1881 when Chadwick became the editor of the Spalding Guide. The annual circulation was said to number 50,000 copies! The 1860 Beadle guide literally transformed baseball into a spectator sport as it was the first guide book published for and available to the general public (preceded only by an 1859 baseball player’s pocket companion for the players) and virtually launched the Baseball Press. WHO WAS HENRY CHADWICK: An avid promoter of Baseball throughout his life, Henry Chadwick (1824–1908) became the game's chief journalistic voice and its moral conscience during the game's early years. He coined the phrase "in the best interests of baseball" as he attacked drinking among players, gambling, and the "throwing" of games (He actually even opposed playing games on Sunday!). Chadwick arrived in America in 1837 and clearly saw baseball as an evolution of the "rounders" ga [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
