Darwin, On the Origin of Species. The Edinburgh Review, Volume 111, 1860. Contains the 46 page key article On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin, reviewed by Richard Owen

Longmans, London, 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. The complete volume 111 (556pp, index). Bound in a late 20th century purple buckram binding, gilt lettered. Very sound and firm throughout, no cracked joints or loose pages. Ex university library, with their stamp to the rear of the title page, and tickets on the front endpapers, and class number label to the foot of the spine, otherwise quite unmarked throughout. Overall a very clean and sound volume. Owen's review of Darwin for the Edinburgh Review was considered by many at the time to effectively crush the evolutionist theory. Attacking Darwin's chief supporters, Hooker and Huxley as mere adherents, he claimed that Darwin represented an "abuse of science" whilst ignoring or dismissing Owen's own creationist views. In response Darwin believed Owen to be "spiteful and malignant", though he also admitted to being hurt by Owen's views of him. One of Owen's chief charges was that Darwin had failed to bring any new facts to light, effectively basing his theory on imagination rather than observation. The arguments that raged through the scientific community, and indeed the popular press in the months and years following Darwin's publication were often buttressed by reference to Owen's opposition, and it was effectively the 1870s before Owen's views were widely discounted in public perception. This Edinburgh Review article is one of the cornerstone pieces of writing in the Darwin evolutionary theory debates of the 19th century. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Quantity Available: 1. Category: Science & Technology; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 196909. .

Fables de la Fontaine (Signed By Mercedes De Acosta at Chateau De Dieudonne in 1907)

Paris: Ancienne Librairie Furne, Combet & Cie, 1860. Undated but c1860. Half-leather binding with five raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. French text. 24 × 15cm, xv + 393pp. This copy was given as a birthday present in 1907 at a finishing school in France - Chateau de Dieudonne in Bornel - and has been signed to the front endpapers with a postcard to "Dodo" by 46 of the girl's friends, among them is the signature of Mercedes de Acosta (and her sister Baba). Her signature is found bottom right of the right hand page. Mercedes de Acosta (1893-1968) was an American playwright, poet and novelist, and a famous lesbian femme fatale. She was described by Cecil Beaton as "that furious lesbian" and Alice B Toklas wrote of her, "Say what you will about Mercedes de Acosta, she's had the most important women of the twentieth century". Her affaires de coeur included Isadora Duncan, Marlene Dietrich, Eva le Gallienne and most importantly, twelve years with Great Garbo. She was sent to Chateau de Dieudonne after her father's suicide in 1907 and it was here that she became aware of her sexual interests with one her first romnaces being with a girl called Catalina, the daughter of the head teacher. A collection of Fontaine's Fables, originally written in the late seventeenth century. This edition illustrated with twelve full page tissue-guarded plates by Tony Johnannot. Condition: This is a very good copy. There is moderate wear to the board's outer edges and some bumping and rubbing to the corners but the leather to the spine is in very good condition with the gilt work remaining crisp, but with a little loss to the top compartment. The inner binding is secure, the pages are clean but age-toned. Some mild foxing to the plates. The pages with the signatures is in good order. A rare and collectible book. PLEASE SEE THE COX AND BUDGE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND TO SEE OUR FULL RANGE OF BOOKS. We welcome direct contact. MANY THANKS.. . Signed. Half Leather. Very Good.

Collection of Three Original Signed Watercolours Showing a Female Soemmering's Copper Pheasant, an Australian Lorikeet, and a Leadbeater's or Pink Cockatoo].

1860 - 24 December 1860. Three watercolour and pencil drawings on laid paper ca. 19x11 cm (7 ¼ x 4 ½ in), mounted on period album leaves within ink drawn frames. Each titled in Latin, dated and signed "Dr. Sg. Ad viv. [or ad nat.] pinx." on the mounts. Collection in very good condition. Fine example of the mid 19th century ornithological drawings, representing three exotic species of birds: Australian Lorikeet and Leadbeater's or Pink Cockatoo (both native to Australia), and Soemmering's Copper Pheasant, endemic to Japan. These drawings executed from nature by a European ornithologist, showcase the popularity of the study of exotic ornithology at the time as in the 19th century many scientific expeditions to tropical regions brought home new species of birds.

Autograph Letter Signed, to J. Hogarth.

[England Frame: 37.5 x 39.6 cm; letter: 17.5 x 12.5 cm.. ca. 1860?] Manuscript letter from the critic and artist to publisher and art dealer Joseph Hogarth, starting out, "I have brought you back your Lewis's, with thanks for loan of them," and continuing with a discussion of the Ruskin etchings Hogarth "may have — any of them — whenever you like" although Ruskin will "neither raise nor lower" the prices. (The list of etchings described as being enclosed has not been preserved here, but => the letter makes it clear that Ruskin would really prefer to keep them if he can't "exchange [them] for Durers.") The presentation offers the letter framed and matted alongside the envelope portion reading "Mr. J. Hogarth [/] Haymarket [/] J. Ruskin" and a portrait of Ruskin taken from a D. Appleton & Company publication. Three items as described above, in 20th-century black wooden frame, frame lightly scuffed with mat clean and well cut; Ruskin items age-toned but otherwise unblemished.

Andrew Jackson.

      - New York: Ritchie & Co., n.y. [ca. 1860]. Mezzotint. Folio (21" X 29"), framed under a single tan matte in a contemporary 1¼" simple dark wood frame (overall dimensions 30" X 39"). Print is near fine -- bright and clean, delicately colored in subdued shades. 1970s vintage framing, plain but serviceable, slight signs of wear and a touch of faint soiling to the matte. Jackson is pictured standing full-length in three-piece suit gazing to the viewer's right, a chair behind him, right hand resting on a table laden with books, documents, quill pen and inkstand. Little is known about artist D.M. Carter (1827-81), on whose painting this mezzotint is based, but Scottish-born Alexander Hay Ritchie (1822-95), whose name appears in the plate as engraver, was a well-known New York artist and engraver whose firm specialized in mezzotints. From the collection of ADLAI E. STEVENSON III (b. 1930), former U.S. Senator from Illinois, in whose Senate office it once hung. (Son of two-term Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II and great-grandson of Grover Cleveland's vice president Adlai E. Stevenson I.)

ARCHIVE Of 120 BILLHEAD RECEIPTS, 1840s - 1860s, To P. WHITIN & SONS, Whitinsville, Mass

1860. The preponderance printed on blue paper. Sizes range from 4-1/8" x 6-7/8" to 7-3/8" x 7-1/2" "Paul Whitin helped found the Northbridge Cotton Manufacturing Company in Northbridge, Massachusetts, in 1809, and in 1816 joined his brothers-in-law in founding the Whitin & Fletchers mill in South Northbridge (now Whitinsville), of which he became sole owner in 1826. Around this time, his two elder sons, Paul, Jr., and John, joined him, forming P. Whitin & Sons. Operating under that name, Paul and John purchased the Northbridge Cotton Manufacturing Company mill after the death of their father in 1831, and they later added their younger brothers, Charles and James, to the company. The company prospered and supplemented its cotton production with the manufacture of pickers, looms, and other machinery. About half of the houses in Whitinsville were owned by the company and rented to its employees, most of whom worked in the shop and foundry; a few employees were clerks in the company store." [UM website]. The P. Whitin & Sons firm was dissolved in 1864. This collection of receipts documents their purchases of foodstuffs & other sundry items from divers merchants in Providence, R.I. [e.g., Wm. F. Huntoon. Coffee & Spices], Worcester [e.g., L. Spring 2nd. Flour, Meal, Salt, et al] & Boston [e.g., W. Baker & Co. Chocolate & Cocoa]. A nice cache of material documenting food prices in the Northeast during the mid-19th C.
