Political Debates between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas, In the Celebrated Campaign of 1858, in Illinois.

Columbus: Follett, Foster and Company, 1860. First edition, first issue, with no advertisements, no rule above the publisher's imprint on the copyright page, and with numeral 2 at the bottom of page 17. Octavo, original publisher's brown cloth. Some intermittent foxing, otherwise fresh with some rubbing to the cloth. he began collecting a scrapbook of his best speeches, particularly those from the just-concluded campaign against Douglas, for possible inclusion in a book. Assiduously pasting newspaper accounts of the debates into the scrapbook, Lincoln cast about for a publisher. Initial efforts failed, mainly because Lincoln wanted the book printed in Springfield, which had no local publishing or printing facilities. Eventually, however, the Columbus, Ohio, firm of Follett, Foster & Company showed interest, and he began preparing the first edition... Somewhat surprisingly for an attorney, Lincoln did not seek Douglas' permission to publish a book of their combined speeches, although Douglas was later given the last-minute opportunity--he declined--to make corrections to his own remarks" (Morris, 121).

Light waterstaining in upper and lower corners and outer margin, old marginal trim to title page, otherwise a beautiful copy.THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ANNUAL BASEBALL GUIDE. BY THE FATHER OF BASEBAL, HENRY CHADWICK—HIS PERSONAL COPY.SIGNED "HENRY CHADWICK / CLIPPER OFFICE" ON FRONT FLYLEAF. With letter of authenticity, dated October 14, 1925, by John T. Doyle, President, American Sports Publishing Company, publisher of Spalding sport guides, who was a friend and colleague of Chadwick. In 1858 Chadwick became the first baseball editor of a newspaper, which he held at the New York Clipper. Hence, the inscription "Clipper Office" accompanying his signature.RULES OF THE GAME WHICH APPEAR IN THIS 1860 GUIDE:• The ball must be pitched, not jerked or thrown to the bat.• The striker is out after swinging and missing three balls if the behind catches the third strike on the fly or first bounce.• If three balls are struck at, and missed, and the last one is not caught, either flying or upon the first bound, it shall be considered fair, and the striker must attempt to make his run.• The striker is out if a fair ball is struck, and the ball is caught either without having touched the ground, or upon the first bound.• If an adversary stops a ball with his hat or cap, or takes it from the hands of a party not engaged in the game, no player can be put out unless the ball shall first have settled in the hands of the pitcher.• Clubs may adopt such rules respecting balls knocked beyond or outside of bounds of the field, as circumstances of the ground may demand; and these rules shall govern all matches played upon the ground, provided that they are distinctly made known to every player and umpire, previous to the commencement of the game.• The player is out if the ball is in the hands of a base tender before the runner steps on the base.• If two ballists are already out, no player running home at the time the ball is struck can make ace if the striker is put out.• The hurler must deliver the ball as near as possible over the center of home for the striker.• Foul balls do not count as strikes.• Any ball first touching the ground or touched by a player within the base lines is fair, even if it goes foul thereafter.• An ace shall be tallied when a base runner steps on the home base.• No person engaged in a match, either as umpire, scorer or player shall be, either directly or indirectly, interested in any bet upon the game.HISTORY OF BEADLE’S GUIDES: Beadle’s is the earliest set of baseball guides, published annually from 1860 to 1881. Chadwick was its editor. It ceased publication in 1881 when Chadwick became the editor of the Spalding Guide. The annual circulation was said to number 50,000 copies! The 1860 Beadle guide literally transformed baseball into a spectator sport as it was the first guide book published for and available to the general public (preceded only by an 1859 baseball player’s pocket companion for the players) and virtually launched the Baseball Press. WHO WAS HENRY CHADWICK: An avid promoter of Baseball throughout his life, Henry Chadwick (1824–1908) became the game's chief journalistic voice and its moral conscience during the game's early years. He coined the phrase "in the best interests of baseball" as he attacked drinking among players, gambling, and the "throwing" of games (He actually even opposed playing games on Sunday!). Chadwick arrived in America in 1837 and clearly saw baseball as an evolution of the "rounders" ga [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

In spite of his conservative style, his skill in creating atmosphere and local colour and his tendencies to the elegiac and melodic over-sweetness mark a point of transition on the line that was to lead to Catalani and the verismo."         Abraham Lincoln

Boston: Little, Brown & Co. FIRST EDITION. Original Wrappers. Fine. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE: ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES PRINTED of John Nicolay's separately published biography of Abraham Lincoln prepared for the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Precedes Nicolay and Hay's monumental biography of Lincoln by eight years. From the collection of Henry W. Poor, noted American financier and founder of what would become Standard and Poor's. "Nicolay became active in Republican party politics and soon became a political lieutenant for one of the capital's leading citizens, Abraham Lincoln. When Lincoln was nominated by the Republican party for the presidency in 1860, he named Nicolay his private secretary... Nicolay [along with John Hay] went to Washington with Lincoln in 1861. The two men shared a room at the White House and had an exceptionally close relationship with Lincoln... "They served Lincoln for four years, performing a wide variety of political and personal duties and remaining close friends throughout, a working friendship that became the foundation for an important literary collaboration in later years. After Lincoln won reelection in 1864, Nicolay served as American consul in Paris, remaining in that post until 1869. In 1872 Nicolay became marshal of the U.S. Supreme Court, a position he held until 1887. During much of his time as marshal, Nicolay worked with Hay on a ten-volume biography entitled Abraham Lincoln: A History, eventually published in 1890; it was this biography that brought them lasting fame" (American National Biography). The biography of Lincoln prepared by Nicolay for the Encyclopedia Britannica reflects the unprecedented access Nicolay had (through Lincoln's son) to the president's papers and preceded the completed 10-volume work by eight years. According to Lincoln's bibliographer Monaghan, it was printed as a separate publication in Boston in a scant edition of 50 copies "for copyright purposes." Monaghan 699. Provenance: From the collection of Henry W. Poor, with his morocco bookplate on the inside of the front wrapper. Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1882. Thin octavo (21 text pages), original printed wrappers; custom morocco box. A few spots, split at top of front wrapper (everything holding secure), impression of Poor's bookplate evident on front cover and offset to title. RARE.

John Murray, London, 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. In total this volume contains 16 articles. Title page, 4 pages contents, 614 pp including index. Bound in original half leather, with marbled boards.         Photograph of Agnes Weld with a younger child

1860 - We offer a fine old photograph, circa 1860 of Agnes Weld, niece of Mrs Alfred Tennyson who was photographed by Julia Margaret Cameron and Charles L. Dodgson. The image measures eleven and a quarter inches by nine inches and is mounted on stiff card. The photograph is not signed but has an inscription on the verso: 'Study of Miss Agnes Weld niece of Mrs Alfred Tennyson done by Mrs Cameron who prepared her own plates'. The card mount has a jagged, vertical tear half way along its top edge down to the edge of the photograph; the image is not torn but has a slight crease in that place, continuing a little way down. There is another tear on the right side of the mount which does not reach into the image. Otherwise the photograph itself is in nice clear condition for its age.

The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication

London: John Murray. FIRST EDITION. Original Cloth. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN ORIGINAL CLOTH of Darwin's sequel to the Origin of Species, including his first use of the term "survival of the fittest". "The Variation was a full statement of the facts on which the theories of the Origin were based... "After the Origin's publication Darwin embarked on two broad lines of research: botanical experiments, and studies of variation, sexual selection, and emotional expressions in humans and mammals. In 1860 he began recycling the early, as yet unpublished, chapters of 'Natural selection' and studying the osteology of domestic pigeons, ducks, and geese for a book on how breeders and horticulturists modify species. This was The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication (1868)... Its two volumes were intended to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation, although they would also incidentally answer Lyell and Gray, who maintained that variations had not occurred purely by chance but were providentially directed. Darwin showed that breeders indeed selected from a vast array of minute random variations. He gave numerous instances of the causes of variability, including the direct effect of the conditions of life, reversion, the effects of use and disuse, saltation, prepotency, and correlated growth. "The Variation also addressed a key criticism of the Origin of Species: that it lacked an adequate understanding of inheritance. Darwin's 'provisional hypothesis of pangenesis' was constructed to explain how heritable traits were passed from parents to offspring. He supposed that each part of a parent organism throws off minute particles, or 'gemmules', which circulate in the body and collect in the sexual organs to be transmitted in reproduction. Because gemmules are received from two parents, the offspring develop to resemble them both more or less. 'The child, strictly speaking, does not grow into the man, but includes germs which slowly and successively become developed and form the man' (Darwin, Variation). "The term 'survival of the fittest' (borrowed at Wallace's insistence from Herbert Spencer's 1866 Principles of Biology) first appeared in the Variation... It was a partial substitute for Darwin's more anthropomorphic 'natural selection', which many critics took to imply the existence of a 'selector'. Mistaking Darwin's metaphor, they concluded that intelligence lay as much behind nature's selecting as behind a pigeon fancier's. Nevertheless Darwin defended his use of 'natural selection' while conceding that he had personified it too much" (Dictionary of National Biography). First issue: with 1-line publisher's imprint on cloth at base of spines, 4 errata in vol. I and 9 errata in vol. II. Provenance: Early owner signature and/or stamp of Welsh businessman and philanthropist J.W. Stokes, Pengwern, to front endpapers, title pages of both volumes and first page of chapter I (vol. I) and contents (vol. II). Blind stamp of the prestigious nineteenth-century Cambridge bookseller and publisher Rivingtons on front free endpaper and flyleaf of vol. I. Complete with 32 pages of ads dated April 1867 at rear of vol. I, 2 pages of ads dated February 1868 at rear of vol. II (as issued) and 43 in-text wood engravings. London: John Murray, 1868.         Superb Tintype image of John Brown in 1857: How John Brown really looked!

n.p., c. 1860. 1.25" x 1.5". "Tintype image of John Brown, approximately 1.25"" x 1.5"". In a 1.375"" x 1.625"" gilt frame under glass. In apparent fine condition.Jean Libby included this image in her book John Brown Photo Chronology (Palo Alto: Allies for Freedom, 2009). She notes that it originated as a daguerreotype made in January 1857 at the time Brown was moving among eastern antislavery people as an advocate of the Kansas Free State cause.Daguerreotypes present a reversed image. John Chester Buttre made a lithograph engraving of the January 1857 ""reversed image"" daguerreotype for inclusion in James Redpath's authorized 1860 biography of John Brown. Here offered is a tintype photograph of Buttre's ""reversed image"" engraving. Since the photograph reverses the reversed image of the daguerreotype and Buttre's engraving, the tintype photograph here offered, produced after 1860, shows how John Brown really looked in January 1857.At the November 23-24, 2013, Political & Americana Signature Auction held by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, this identical tintype image, except with a slight flaw in the blank left background, sold for $4,062.50. Heritage commented on its rarity thusly: ""we have never before seen this John Brown variety."""

19th century view of Venice - Eugenio Testolini.

SPLENDID 19TH CENTURY VIEW OF VENICE, SEEN FROM THE GRAND CANAL"Palazzo Ducale". Lithography with original hand colouring, made approx. 1860 by Eugenio Testolini in Venice. Size: (image) 37,5 x 55 cm (paper: 49 x 63 cm).The view depicts the city in those turbulent times, when in 1848?1849 a revolt had briefly re-established the Venetian Republic and in 1866, following the Third Italian War of Independence, Venice, along with the rest of the Veneto, became part of the newly created Kingdom of Italy. With from left to right the Palazzo della Zecca (which once housed the official government mint); the Bibliotheca Marciana (behind the library we see the Campanile di San Marco); the Piazetta di San Marco with the granite columns (between which death sentences were carried out) carrying St Theodore and the Lion of Venice (the city patrons) and in the back on St Mark"s Square the Clock Tower leading to Rialto and St Mark"s Basilica; along the Molo (the quay fronting the lagoon) we see the Doge"s Palace and across the bridge to the right the Palazzo delle Prigioni. In the lagoon there are two paddlewheel steamships, one pumping out a black funnel of smoke, as well as numerous gondolas rowing their customers across the water.Although tourism had been an important sector of Venetian industry since the 18th century, when it was a major centre for the Grand Tour, with its beautiful cityscape, uniqueness, and rich musical and artistic cultural heritage. In the 19th century, it had become a fashionable centre for the rich and famous, often staying or dining at luxury establishments such as the Danieli Hotel and the Caffè Florian. With this fine lithography Eugenio Testolini, who had a shop on Piazza di S. Marco, catered to those wealthy tourists.Venice today is still regarded as one of the world"s most beautiful cities and attracts an estimated 50.000 tourist per day.Price: € 1.250,- .

Verso weitere Skizze.
