The books spine has been restitched. In good condition only. This book is from Nigel Temple's collection and has his initials written neatly in pencil. Loosely inserted is a hand written sheet by collector Nigel Temple ' Our then establishment of the French Empire in 1851-1852 a violent panic took possession of the mind. The press promulgated the wildest alarms as to the intentions of Louis Napoleon (Mons. Luois Popolong)------ By a series of powerful speeches-Cobden sought to calm the passions of his countrymen . And becomes for a time the best- abused man in England" Encyclopedia Britannia XXth. ed. 'Freer Trade with France was negotiated by Cobden, 1860.'; 'Many other points of contemporary politics & economics brought out in this child's book'. No author is mentioned, but Cruikshank & Alfred Crowquill did a lot of work for Read & Co. during this period. In fact the verso of the cover advertises books illustrated by these two artists. Perhaps by Crowquill,(?) the art work appears to be by him rather than Cruiskhank. No copies available on COPAC or WorldCat. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Blandfordia Flammea Elegans (Christmas Bells)

London: L. Reeve & Co, c.1860. Hand coloured lithograph, 285 x 240mm, mounted and framed. Artist's proof with notes to the colourist. An artist's proof, beautifully hand-coloured with detailed notes for the colourist and addressed to the publishers of The Floral Magazine, Reeve and Company in Covent Garden. This illustration appeared in the first issue published in 1861 (number 134 in the top right of the lithograph). Blandfordia Grandiflora (also known as flammea), now commonly known as the Christmas Bells, was named by the prodigious Robert Brown in 1810 from specimens collected in the Hunter River. As with many Australian natives, no sooner had specimens been sent to England than the demand from nurserymen for seed propagation ensued. In 1854, Curtis' Botanical Magazine sang the praises of what was "unquestionably the most beautiful and distinct of all" the specimens of Blandfordia. "The root was brought from the Sydney Botanic Garden (under the name of B.grandiflora) four years ago by Lord Walter Butler, to the Countess of Carrick, who presented it to Dr. Mackay. It appears to have been introduced to Sydney from Hunter's River..."

Giving South Carolina’s Governor Authority to Conduct Foreign Affairs

Charleston, South Carolina 1860 - Printed Document, "An Ordinance To amend the Constitution of the State of South Carolina, in respect to the Executive Department," Charleston, South Carolina, [ca December 24, 1860]. 2 pp., 8 1/4 x 13 3/4 in. Shortly after Abraham Lincoln's election as president in November 1860, secessionists in South Carolina demanded a convention to remove the state from the United States. South Carolina's secession convention assembled in Columbia on December 17, 1860, but fearing an outbreak of smallpox there, they reassembled in Charleston from December 18 to January 5, 1861. On December 20, they passed a secession ordinance. Excerpts"That the Governor shall have power to receive ambassadors, ministers, consuls, and agents from foreign conduct negotiations with foreign powers: to make treaties by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.""That the Governor shall appoint four persons.who, together with the Lieutenant-Governor, shall form a council, to be called the Executive advise with him upon all matters which may be submitted to their consideration."Historical BackgroundA thirteen-member Committee on the Constitution of the State considered a variety of issues related to severing the state from the federal union. After deliberation, Chairman David L. Wardlaw (1799-1873) reported this proposed ordinance, which the convention debated and passed on December 27. It gave the governor of South Carolina broad power to conduct foreign relations and created an Executive Council to advise him. This ordinance was in effect for only a short time until the formation of the Confederacy with its own constitution and laws. South Carolina ratified the Confederate Constitution on April 3, 1861, and passed its own new Constitution on April 8. That same day, the Convention repealed the first section of this ordinance and altered the second to dismiss the Executive Council except for the lieutenant governor and another member who would lead the Treasury Department.[1]ConditionFire damage and loss to right edge along folds, with minor text loss. A 160-acre fire in Charleston in December 1861 damaged more than six hundred buildings.ReferenceUnlisted in T. Michael Parrish and Robert M. Willingham Jr.'s Confederate Imprints: A Bibliography of Southern Publications from Secession to Surrender (1984). Very rare.[1] Ordinances and Constitution of the State of South Carolina, with the Constitution of the Provisional Government and of the Confederate States of America (Charleston, SC: Evans & Cogswell, 1861), 32.

Albumen print (13 1⁄4 x 11 1⁄2 in.), original printed mount with Whipple imprint and title "Home of Abraham Lincoln," early erroneous inscription "Original photograph made in 1858 or 1859." Minor wear and soiling, crease at upper right. Abraham Lincoln at his home in Springfield. "Lincoln stands on the terrace of the only house he ever owned. He called it his 'little brown cottage' and bought it for $1500 in 1844 from the Reverend Charles Dresser, an Episcopal rector who had married the Lincolns in 1842. Here Lincoln's sons Eddie, Willie, and Tad were born, and here he was living when elected President" (Ostendorf). Lincoln stands with his sons Willie and Tad, who is barely visible behind a post. Lincoln left Springfield for Washington on February 11, 1861. In his farewell address, he told the people of Springfield, "My friends, no one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting. To this place, and the kindness of these people, I owe everything. Here I have lived a quarter of a century, and have passed from a young to an old man. Here my children have been born, and one is buried. I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington. Without the assistance of the Divine Being who ever attended him, I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. Trusting in Him who can go with me, and remain with you, and be everywhere for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell." The photographer, John Adams Whipple (1822-1891) was a pioneering American photographer and inventor who owned a successful photography studio in Boston. "Whipple was instrumental in the development of the glass negative/paper positive process in America" (Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography). Lincoln was chosen as the Republican nominee for the presidency on May 18, 1860. Whipple journeyed to Illinois that summer to photograph the rising political star at his home in Springfield. This rare large-format print bears Whipple's imprint and address. Large-format photographs of Abraham Lincoln and his family are rare. Ostendorf, Lincoln's Photographs O-38.

        A Princess Procession. (Triptych)

Japan: circa 1860s - Color woodcut. Triptych 38.5 x 75.5. Matted and framed by "K. Mizhuhara Bros. Japanese Artisans."Sadahide was born as Hashimoto Kenjiro in Shimosa Province (modern Chiba Prefecture) near Edo. He became a student of Utagawa Kunisada I (1786-1865), also known as Tokokuni III (hence the sada character in his own professional name) and usually signed himself Gountei Sadahide. He is also known as Hashimoto and Gyokuransai Sadahide. His early work, beginning in 1826, was mainly book illustrations, but in the 1830s he began to produce color prints of conventional subjects such as beautiful women and actors. Sadahide is considered one of Utagawa Kunisada's more accomplished students.3 He was a fine draftsman and often managed to bring a flair for compositional design to his pictures, when many of his contemporaries relied solely on pictorial reporting.4 He is also one of the finest artists in whose work Western stylistic elements are incorporated in a completely convincing manner. His deft use of Western perspective is combined with such typical ukiyo-e elements as the abrupt cutting off of the representation by the border of the picture plane, and shading to indicate modeling of the figures is juxtaposed with flat planes. Sadahide's work certainly influenced the later artists of the Utagawa school, who specialized in prints reporting actual events of the Meiji period, but most of these artists lacked his power of expression and depicted the much-changed Meiji world in the manner of their Tokugawa forebears.
