Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology

London: John Murray,, 1860. of the countries visited during the voyage of H.M.S. 'Beagle' round the world, under the Command of Capt. FitzRoy. Tenth Thousand. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, paneling in blind to sides, brown endpapers. Engraved illustrations in the text. Spine ends creased, bump to head of front cover, front hinge cracked but holding, text block still sound. A very good copy. Second edition, and the final definitive text. The Journal of Researches was first published as volume III of Fitzroy's Narrative of the surveying voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure and Beagle in 1839, and also issued as an independent volume at the same time. The second edition, extensively revised and reduced from about 224,000 words to 213,000, was first published in 1845 in the scarlet cloth of John Murray's Colonial and Home Library. It was reprinted in the same series in 1852, stated on the title page as a new edition, instead of second, although no changes had been made. The present edition is the next issue of the same second edition, and is the final text as Darwin left it. The parts from the original stereos are the same, but a postscript, dated 1 February 1860, is added to the preliminaries, and it is issued for the first time in a green cloth case of the same style as the first three editions of the Origin. "The page height is nearly two centimetres greater than before and the wider margins give the book a much better appearance." Darwin noted in his autobiography that "the voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life and has determined my whole career…As far as I can judge of myself I worked to the utmost during the voyage from the mere pleasure of investigation, and from my strong desire to add a few facts to the great mass of facts in natural science. But I was also ambitious to take a fair place among scientific men…The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than that of any other books".

An Appeal to the Women of the United Kingdom by Women: On a Subject Demanding Immediate Attention

Houlston and Wright, London 1860 - Near Fine. Disbound 8 page pamphlet with pencil library shelfmark to upper cover corner and slight discoloration to bottom of cover. Internally complete and clean, with one small blot on pages 5-6. Else in exceptional condition, with no other copies on the market and OCLC reporting only one held at an institution.Pre-dating the UK Women's Suffrage Movement by almost a decade, An Appeal to the Women of the United Kingdom by Women was an early and important call to a rising class of female activists. Documenting the dire straits under which children and women were working, it encouraged the women of Britain to recognize the collective power of their own voices. "Fellow Countrywomen, Your voices are wanted-wanted throughout the kingdom-and wanted at once." Within the text, reports on unsafe working conditions and unhealthy hours were combined with emotional appeals based in maternal instinct; and the pamphlet writers argue that improvements for children and family can only come when women fight for themselves. "Fortitude and firmness, when occasion demands them, are virtues as noble and becoming in women as in men; the right line of conduct is the same for both sexes?our feelings were given to us to excite action."An early and scarce example of the rising tide of female activism in Britain, predating suffrage. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Moderate toning to text, light foxining to a few leaves. $1,250. * Only edition, one of two issues, the other with 68 pp. "Hicks was a triple murderer, but only technically a pirate. He was a member of the crew of an oyster sloop, and he chopped up the captain and two crew members in lower New York Bay, but being in the ebb and flow of the tide, it was technically a crime on the high seas and a federal offense. The little money he took got him to Providence, where he was caught. His execution in New York Harbor, in the sight of hundreds of vessels, was in the best maritime tradition (McDade). A notable feature of this account is the "psychological" profile by Fowler, the notable phrenologist, based on a post-mortem study of Hicks's skull and digestive organs. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Blandfordia Flammea Elegans (Christmas Bells)

London: L. Reeve & Co, c.1860. Hand coloured lithograph, 285 x 240mm, mounted and framed. Artist's proof with notes to the colourist. An artist's proof, beautifully hand-coloured with detailed notes for the colourist and addressed to the publishers of The Floral Magazine, Reeve and Company in Covent Garden. This illustration appeared in the first issue published in 1861 (number 134 in the top right of the lithograph). Blandfordia Grandiflora (also known as flammea), now commonly known as the Christmas Bells, was named by the prodigious Robert Brown in 1810 from specimens collected in the Hunter River. As with many Australian natives, no sooner had specimens been sent to England than the demand from nurserymen for seed propagation ensued. In 1854, Curtis' Botanical Magazine sang the praises of what was "unquestionably the most beautiful and distinct of all" the specimens of Blandfordia. "The root was brought from the Sydney Botanic Garden (under the name of B.grandiflora) four years ago by Lord Walter Butler, to the Countess of Carrick, who presented it to Dr. Mackay. It appears to have been introduced to Sydney from Hunter's River..."

Giving South Carolina’s Governor Authority to Conduct Foreign Affairs

Charleston, South Carolina 1860 - Printed Document, "An Ordinance To amend the Constitution of the State of South Carolina, in respect to the Executive Department," Charleston, South Carolina, [ca December 24, 1860]. 2 pp., 8 1/4 x 13 3/4 in. Shortly after Abraham Lincoln's election as president in November 1860, secessionists in South Carolina demanded a convention to remove the state from the United States. South Carolina's secession convention assembled in Columbia on December 17, 1860, but fearing an outbreak of smallpox there, they reassembled in Charleston from December 18 to January 5, 1861. On December 20, they passed a secession ordinance. Excerpts"That the Governor shall have power to receive ambassadors, ministers, consuls, and agents from foreign conduct negotiations with foreign powers: to make treaties by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.""That the Governor shall appoint four persons.who, together with the Lieutenant-Governor, shall form a council, to be called the Executive advise with him upon all matters which may be submitted to their consideration."Historical BackgroundA thirteen-member Committee on the Constitution of the State considered a variety of issues related to severing the state from the federal union. After deliberation, Chairman David L. Wardlaw (1799-1873) reported this proposed ordinance, which the convention debated and passed on December 27. It gave the governor of South Carolina broad power to conduct foreign relations and created an Executive Council to advise him. This ordinance was in effect for only a short time until the formation of the Confederacy with its own constitution and laws. South Carolina ratified the Confederate Constitution on April 3, 1861, and passed its own new Constitution on April 8. That same day, the Convention repealed the first section of this ordinance and altered the second to dismiss the Executive Council except for the lieutenant governor and another member who would lead the Treasury Department.[1]ConditionFire damage and loss to right edge along folds, with minor text loss. A 160-acre fire in Charleston in December 1861 damaged more than six hundred buildings.ReferenceUnlisted in T. Michael Parrish and Robert M. Willingham Jr.'s Confederate Imprints: A Bibliography of Southern Publications from Secession to Surrender (1984). Very rare.[1] Ordinances and Constitution of the State of South Carolina, with the Constitution of the Provisional Government and of the Confederate States of America (Charleston, SC: Evans & Cogswell, 1861), 32.
