[Attributes: First Edition]

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY VINDICATED - THE DEMANDS OF THE SOUTH EXPLAINED. SPEECH OF HON. ABRAHAM LINCOLN, OF ILLINOIS, AT THE COOPER INSTITUTE, NEW YORK CITY [caption title]

[N.p., likely New York City, 1860. 8pp. Single folded sheet. First leaf detached, some tanning, minor edge chipping. Good. Untrimmed, unopened. An early printing of Lincoln's famous Cooper Union speech, given in New York in February 1860, in which he demolishes Stephen Douglas's claim that the Framers and Constitution granted no authority at the federal level to restrict slavery's expansion into the western territories. The speech catapulted Lincoln into the public eye and made him a viable presidential candidate. This printing of the speech concludes with a note that Lincoln finished his oratory "amid the loud and uproarious applause of his hearers...cheering with the full power of their lungs." This copy has the ownership signature of mid-19th-century New York Democratic politician Adin Thayer at the bottom of the first page. A rare printing, both in institutions and on the open market, of Lincoln's momentous Cooper Union speech. MONAGHAN 55. EBERSTADT 160:320. WRIGHT HOWES 64:139. MIDLAND NOTES 24:146. HEARTMAN 120:1112.         An Appeal to the Women of the United Kingdom by Women: On a Subject Demanding Immediate Attention

Houlston and Wright, London 1860 - Near Fine. Disbound 8 page pamphlet with pencil library shelfmark to upper cover corner and slight discoloration to bottom of cover. Internally complete and clean, with one small blot on pages 5-6. Else in exceptional condition, with no other copies on the market and OCLC reporting only one held at an institution.Pre-dating the UK Women's Suffrage Movement by almost a decade, An Appeal to the Women of the United Kingdom by Women was an early and important call to a rising class of female activists. Documenting the dire straits under which children and women were working, it encouraged the women of Britain to recognize the collective power of their own voices. "Fellow Countrywomen, Your voices are wanted-wanted throughout the kingdom-and wanted at once." Within the text, reports on unsafe working conditions and unhealthy hours were combined with emotional appeals based in maternal instinct; and the pamphlet writers argue that improvements for children and family can only come when women fight for themselves. "Fortitude and firmness, when occasion demands them, are virtues as noble and becoming in women as in men; the right line of conduct is the same for both sexes?our feelings were given to us to excite action."An early and scarce example of the rising tide of female activism in Britain, predating suffrage. He was a member of the crew of an oyster sloop, and he chopped up the captain and two crew members in lower New York Bay, but being in the ebb and flow of the tide, it was technically a crime on the high seas and a federal offense. The little money he took got him to Providence, where he was caught. His execution in New York Harbor, in the sight of hundreds of vessels, was in the best maritime tradition (McDade). A notable feature of this account is the "psychological" profile by Fowler, the notable phrenologist, based on a post-mortem study of Hicks's skull and digestive organs. Loosely inserted is a hand written sheet by collector Nigel Temple ' Our then establishment of the French Empire in 1851-1852 a violent panic took possession of the mind. The press promulgated the wildest alarms as to the intentions of Louis Napoleon (Mons. Luois Popolong)------ By a series of powerful speeches-Cobden sought to calm the passions of his countrymen . And becomes for a time the best- abused man in England" Encyclopedia Britannia XXth. ed. 'Freer Trade with France was negotiated by Cobden, 1860.'; 'Many other points of contemporary politics & economics brought out in this child's book'. No author is mentioned, but Cruikshank & Alfred Crowquill did a lot of work for Read & Co. during this period. In fact the verso of the cover advertises books illustrated by these two artists. Perhaps by Crowquill,(?) the art work appears to be by him rather than Cruiskhank. No copies available on COPAC or WorldCat. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
