PLATT, SMITH. H., Rev
New York: Daniel Fanshaw, 1859. First edition, 12mo, pp. 95; text foxed, else a very good copy in original blindstamped brown cloth, gilt-lettered on upper cover. Though fiction, and very anti-slavery fiction at that, it is based on a true story. "It is admitted that the heros of the story are extreme cases, and it was their misfortune to be such; but the author does not present their experience as an average sample of the sufferings of slave life; he simply vouches for the accuracy of the story as illustrative of the liabilities of their life" (Preface). American Bible Society,, New York: 1859 - 8vo, publisher’s elaborately embossed brown leather, gilt lettering, 112 pages. A lovely example of an American embossed publisher’s calf binding, the Pica Octavo edition of the Testaments, and just a little too late for Wolf’s From Gothic Windows to Peacocks. Early ink and pencil autograph inscriptions in the endpapers, with a small early mounted clipping (on the meaning of the word "Selah") on the rear paste-down. Some rubbing to the spine and corners, with a little trifling cracking on the spine; a few small stains along the lower edges; a little darkened; a very good copy.

Octavo, handsome portrait frontispiece, folding colour map; original black cloth (scuffed), front hinge split (not detached, bindings still sound), still a very good copy with errata slip. The Reverend Scoresby sailed in the 'Royal Charter' to observe the changes in the magnetic state of a large iron ship sailing from northern to southern latitudes. Scoresby commanded several Arctic voyages in the early part of his career before the advent of very large full iron and steel hulled shipping. The expedition was motivated by both scientific curiosity and compassionate concern for the safety of these vessels whose navigational capacity was affected by the hull.
