American Bible Society, 1859. This is a rare massive, Folio sized. Embossed RAISED LETTER (partial) bible for the blind (I guess before Braille was widely adopted). A very rare work, both from a bible history and the history of works created for the blind. American Bible Society, Vol II - Part of the new testament COVER is detached (some of the first pages are attached to the cover, but the entire thing is mostly detached from the rest of the book). The embossing itself is, for the most part, in very good condition (probably not used that much). Typical age and usage related damage, particularly to the covers. Blackening of the front and back pages. PROBABLY a missing blank sheet before the title page (I don't know for sure). Some browning spots, loosening pages, etc. Please examine pictures carefully to get a good idea of the general condition. Very Interesting binding. It appears that each page was folded and bound (not from larger printer sheets), which makes the binding twice as think as the rest of the volume. I think this might have been deliberate to avoid compaction of the embossed letters. Don't know for sure. Because the pages have raised letters, there are not as many pages as you would normally have in a book this thick, so the book weighs in at only 7.7 pounds despite its large size. This is an Extremely Rare and Very Old Original 1859 Copy of Memorial of the Revival in Plymouth Church. It is not likely that you often get the opportunity to purchase an original of this book. This book is considered to be a culturally and historically significant book, and has been recently reprinted with the help of another old original copy. This book shows considerable wear, including wear to the cover with part of the covering having pulled loose from the spine. Because the book is so old and rare, I have made no attempt to re-glue the cover back to the spine - this would be better left in the hands of someone experienced in restoring such books. There is discoloration and/or staining on the pages and there is some markings, mostly on the blank pages at the end of the book. I have included several photos to give you an idea of the book's condition. Since the book is sold as is, please look closely at the photos I have provided and if you have any questions or would like any additional photos, please let me know. I can usually ship your item within two business days, however for times when I am occasionally on travel, it may take a couple of extra days. If this is the case, I will email you and let you know when the item will ship. This item will be shipped with insurance and with a signature required upon delivery. If you have specific requirements with respect to shipping, please let me know upon or prior to purchase. Thanks for looking and good luck! PHOTOS: Please carefully review all photos provided. Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1859. Tall 8vo (260 x 165 mm; 10¼ x 6½ in.). xxxii, 754, [2] blank, 80 pages advertisements dated July 1859. Half-title. 363 wood-engravings in text after the drawings by H. V. Carter. Modern brown leather. A very good copy with characteristic light browning and intermittent marginal staining consistent with the book's use. Provenance: J. L. Mondloch (early 20th-century ink signature on half-title; possibly a physician from Montana of that name, died 1939). Item #403937 FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Henry Gray's landmark Anatomy, which remains the standard work on the subject some 160 years after the publication of the first edition. The short-lived English anatomist and surgeon Henry Gray won prizes for his essays on the optic nerves (1849) and on the spleen (1854), the latter of which contained important facts about its function that had remained undiscovered for seventy years. In 1855, Gray was approached by his colleague Henry Vandyke Carter (1831-1897) at St. George's Hospital Medical School in London with the idea of producing a comprehensive, inexpensive, and accessible text on anatomy for medical students. After the publication in London of the Anatomy in 1858, numerous errors were found in its dense and technical text. The publisher's notice in the American edition informs the reader that the book's "passage through the press has therefore been superintended by a competent professional" to ensure the improvement of the text. The American edition enhanced on the index of the British edition, and rearranged certain parts for easier comprehe … [Click Below for Full Description]

PARSONS, Theophilus, Jr.
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1859. 8vo. viii, 476, 12 pages, including ads at end. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Theophilus Parsons. Original brown cloth. Some wear at ends of spine, frontispiece foxed, otherwise near-fine. Item #405003 First edition, Parsons-family presentation copy, inscribed on the verso of the front free endpaper: "To Miss Elizabeth Parsons / This memoir of her Grandfather is given by her affectionate Uncle." About Theophilus Parsons: A leading lawyer in New England, Theophilus Parsons (1750-1813) is perhaps best known as the author of the Essex Report, which outlined many of the principles for a republican form of government. The Federalist Parsons was the principal author of the plan which John Adams adopted for the Massachusetts state constitution, and he contributed significantly to the ratification of the federal constitution. Parsons served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1806 to 1813. Considered somewhat eccentric, he was often accompanied by his wife, who made sure her husband dressed well and looked presentable. His eccentricities did not compromise his judicial decisions, however, and his law clerks included John Quincy Adams, future sixth president of the United States, who practiced with Parsons after graduating from law school.
