ANDRIVEAU-GOUJON (Eugène).
Paris, E. Andriveau-Goujon, 1859.

An antique oil on board painting measuring approximately 16 x 20 inches in a larger frame. Artist may have painted this on a trip out to the western plains. Last origin was the Chicagoland area. Thanks for looking.American master Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953) also painted Chief Two Moons and many Plains Indians. Two Moons (1847ƒ??1917), or Ishaynishus (Cheyenne: ??e'he ??hn??es?¦stse), was one of the Cheyenne chiefs who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn and other battles against the United States Army. Two Moons was the son of Carries the Otter, an Arikara captive who married into the Cheyenne tribe. Perhaps known best for his participation in battles such as the Battle of the Rosebud against General Crook on June 17, 1876, in the Montana Territory, the Battle of Little Big Horn on June 26, 1876 and what would prove to be his last battle which was that of the Battle of Wolf Mountain on January 8, 1877. Two Moons defeat in the battle at Wolf mountain by General Nelson A. Miles would inevitably lead to the surrender of his Cheyenne band at Fort Keogh in April, 1877.After the surrender of the Cheyenne band he led in 1877, Two Moons chose to enlist as an Indian Scout for the same General, Nelson A. Miles to whom he had not long since surrendered. As a result of Two Moons' pleasant personality, the friendliness that he showed towards the whites as well as his ability to get along with the military, General Miles appointed him head Chief of the Cheyenne Northern Reservation. As head Chief, Two Moons would prove to play a crucial role in facilitating the surrender of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Very Good. Morris, NY: A. S. Avery, Job Printer. Very Good. Broadside. Broadside measuring 17 -1/2" x 24" with black lettering and decorative border. No content of verso. Published circa 1859. In very good condition with minor creasing to top edge, one -1/4" tear to bottom edge not affecting content and very light foxing. From the first lines of the broadside: "The subscriber calls attention of all dairymen and all other persons interested in the art of butter making, to this improved atmospheric churn. Patented by J. H. Bump of Morris, Oswego County, New-York, the 26th of October 1858." This wonderfully dramatic broadside entreats farmers to examine the churn, to discover the ease in which it is operated and the quality of butter produced, and to wonder at the cheapness of such a fine apparatus. The broadside contains many recommendations from Dairymen and quotes the Scientific American to describe the churn's method of aerating milk and cream with the best outcomes. Surely this is butter making at its finest. Five copies in OCLC as of May 2018.

"A work of extreme interest," Sabin. These memoirs, prepared by ten of the viceroys, were intended to apprise each successor of the nature and duties of his post, of the distribution of offices and presidencies, of the privileges of the natives, their hereditary customs and character-"in short, statistics of everything that could be needed. Charles Dickens
1859. For sale is a fine and rare second issue of the first edition of the original parts of A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens. Published London: Chapman and Hall, 193, Piccadilly; And At The Office Of All The Year Round, 11, Wellington Street, North. MDCCCLIX. 254p.p. A full suite of 16 illustrations by H.K. Browne. Tall 8vo. Beautifully bound in very fine contemporaneous black morocco over marbled boards. Bands to the spine, in gilt, and the title and author's name in gilt. Original marbled endpapers and page edges. Externally it remains in really very pleasing order; the morocco is largely fresh and the gilt crisp and bright, and the boards also. Occasional trivial extraneous rubbing, but this does not hinder its handsome finish. Internally, this example is without doubt one of the cleanest examples of this title we have handled; only a tiny amount of light spotting to a few text leaves. The vignette and frontispiece have spotting, as is predictable. The impressions to the plates are extraordinarily bright and bold - making them a very early, and important, set in the print run of the plates. Overall, this is an opportunity not to be missed. It is one of the hardest-to-find Dickens first editions, unrestored, and bound in a wonderful binding. It will grace any collection, and could not come more highly recommended. Waddell, P[eter] Hately; [Robert Burns]
Ayrshire Express, Ayr. 80pp; sewn signatures glued into printed paper covers; 159 x 104 x 4 mm. The lecture & speech of the organizer of the first great Robert Burns Festival at the poet's cottage in Alloway Ayrshire, presented on the centenary of his birth. Some 900 similar celebrations world-wide are said to have been lubriciously joined that day, but the so-called Cottage Festival takes precedence in attending the font of the festivity. Robbie Burns Day (piping-in the haggis) has remained a tradition around the world ever since. The author (1817-91), a Free Church minister (1843-61), seceded again (shortly after the Burns Centenary) to establish his Church of the Future (1861-88). Corners & spine ends worn away, with a 4 x 2 cm brown stain at heel on cover. A remarkably scarce imprint, particularly given the fragility of the light-weight paper covers. Author's rear cover ad for this & a few other works, dated Nov 1859. WorldCat locates 5 copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Eliot George
Edinburgh and London William Blackwood and Sons 1859. 3 volumes. First edition. 8vo., in the now very scarce publisher's original brown cloth, the boards embossed in blind, the spines gilt lettered and decorated, original yellow endpapers. [8], 325; [8], 374; [8], 333 pp., 16pp ad catalogue. Very attractive and fresh copies, the scarce original cloth unfaded with bright gilt and just a bit of wear to the tips, the hinges a bit shaken but not repaired or refurbished and as original, the text quite fresh with only very light and occasional mellowing, a superior copy of a book rarely encountered without substantial repairs, much less in the original cloth. FIRST EDITION OF GEORGE ELIOT'S FIRST NOVEL, PUBLISHED WHILE ELIOT WAS STILL UNKNOWN AND IN AN EDITION OF ONLY 2100 COPIES. A copy such as this in original cloth and bright condition is quite unusual. Immediately recognized as a significant literary work, Adam Bede has never since been out of print. From the very beginning it has enjoyed a very positive critical reputation. An anonymous review in The Athenaeum in 1859 praised it as a "novel of the highest class," and The Times called it "a first-rate novel." A review by Anne Mozley was the first to identify that the novel was probably written by a woman. Contemporary reviewers, often influenced by nostalgia for the earlier period represented in Bede, enthusiastically praised Eliot's characterizations and realistic representations of rural life. Charles Dickens wrote; "The whole country life that the story is set in, is so real, and so droll and genuine, and yet so selected a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Railroad; Atlas] E & T. Fairbanks & Co
New York: Schonberg & Co, 1859. Scarce pocket atlas and railway guide to the United States in the period preceding the transcontinental railroad, with 30 individual color state railway maps, from Maine down to Texas and across to California, showing existing rail lines and accompanied with charts listing completed railway line distances. Cuba is also represented in a map with two short lengths of railway shown. The Atlas with many illustrated advertisements for E & T. Fairbanks & Co.'s industrial scales. Founded in 1823, Fairbanks became an extremely successful manufacturer of the platform scale, which allowed the weighing of large objects much more accurately, giving more accurate calculations of value (for example, the value of a wagon load of farm produce). The Atlas includes an Appendix with list of Railways "now or soon to be opened for traffic", which records the State Island Railway from Stapleton S.I. to opposite South Amboy (14 miles) "will be opened about January 1860". 16mo, v, 61pp including Appendix. 5 3/4 x 4". A ruffled, printed tan front wrapper; stitch bound. We have not located this specific copy on WorldCat. OCLC: 1150075 records 5 copies, but at 59pp; this copy is 61pp, although apparently lacking the rear wrapper. Harvard holds a copy with 59pp (no Appendix), but with 2pp of ads at the rear. Our copy with a single page advertisement at the front for Lansing Bonnell, Dealer in Stoves, Tin Plate & c., Milwaukee Wisconsin. Good + condition; internally maps bright and fresh.

R. J. Prickett
Book Title: THE REV. J.W. LOGUEN, AS SLAVE AND AS FREEMAN Author: J. W. Loguen (Jermain Wesley), 1814-1872. Jermain Wesley Loguen was born around 1814 in Davidson County, Tennessee, to an enslaved mother named Jane (who was later renamed Cherry) and her white master, David Logue. Originally named Jarm Logue, he later added the "n" to his last name to differentiate himself from his slave-master father and adopted the middle name "Wesley" to reflect his Wesleyan Methodist sympathies. When he was in his early twenties, Loguen escaped from slavery and fled to Canada. He eventually settled in New York state, enrolled in the abolitionist Oneida School in 1839, and later established a school in Utica, New York, for African American children. He moved to Syracuse, New York, in 1841, founded another school, and married Caroline Storum, with whom he had five children. Loguen was ordained by the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church in 1842 and became increasingly involved with the anti-slavery movement, working with other abolitionists, including Frederick Douglass, on the lecture circuit. Loguen publicly denounced the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law and swore to defy it. He even advertised himself as a prominent Underground Railroad conductor in an April 1855 issue of Frederick Douglass' Paper, writing "that the Underground Railroad was never doing a better business than at present. . . . I speak officially, as the agent and keeper of an Underground Railroad Depot." Loguen served as pastor of Zion Church in Binghamton, New York, in the early 1860s, and after the Civil War became act … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dubini Angelo
Milano, Giuseppe Bernardoni, 1859. [Click Below for Full Description]

Williams, Monier, editor
London Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1859. First edition. 23 x 15 cm; pp.xix, 276; map. Contemporary embossed cloth, spine gilt; corners a little bumped, slight wear to top and bottom of spine. Assembles the published correspondence surrounding the various controversies for and against printing Indian languages romanized rather than in their original scripts. Questions of empire, religion, and education loom large; the editor was a man at the centre of them all. Monier Williams (1819-1899), later Sir Monier Monier-Williams, was born in Bombay; after studying at Oxford and training at Haileybury for the East India Company he went on to a distinguished academic career, teaching at Haileybury from 1844 to 1858, when the college was closed and staff pensioned off. He was elected Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford in 1860. He was a tireless advocate of the study of oriental languages and a keen fundraiser, whose legacy was less his scholarship than the institutions, funds, and collections whose creation at Oxford he spearheaded. Moleschott, Jakob, Arzt und Physiologe (1822-1893).
Zürich, 26. II, 1859. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

MEREDITH, George.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1859. 3 volumes, octavo. Original brown cloth (Carter variant B), spines lettered in gilt, blind-stamped centrepieces to covers, yellow endpapers. Library blindstamp to front free endpaper. Spines lightly rolled, a little rubbed, one signature of vol. III standing slightly proud, occasional light foxing. A very good set. First edition of Meredith's first full-length novel. Published in June 1859 without initial serialisation in parts, The Ordeal of Richard Feverel proved a failure, with hostile reviews and a shocked public. Partly this lack of success can be seen as a result of Charles Edward Mudie's decision not to stock it in his lending library due to his concern at the novel's frankness. Meredith would bear a grudge against Mudie for many years as a result. The novel was not reprinted until 1878, whereupon it became a greater success, partly due to Meredith's growing popularity and his establishment as one of the great Victorian novelists. It is now well-regarded by modern critics for its early psychoanalysis and openness about sexuality, and indeed, is sometimes seen as the inception of new literary trends: J. B. Priestley stated that "So far as English fiction is concerned there can be no doubt that the modern novel began with the publication of The Ordeal of Richard Feverel". Carter (More Binding Variants, p. 138) records two binding variants for the book, in green and the present brown; Forman does not record a brown and adds a grey (Bibliography, p. 19). Carter writes that the brown binding is probably a secondary binding, but that it is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE ORDEAL OF RICHARD FEVEREL - A History of Father and Son, by GEORGE MEREDITH. THREE VOLUME SET - Complete in these Three Volumes. LONDON: CHAPMAN AND HALL, 193, Piccadilly, 1859. FIRST EDITION. This was George Meredith's first full-length novel (preceded only by a volume of verse and two single-volume burlesques). When it first came out, in 1859, it was a critical and financial failure, considered both "unreadable" and of "low ethical standards". It was not, therefore, reprinted until 1878. Then, all of a sudden, the critics began raving about the book to such an extent that it became required reading at many English schools. That is why the 1859 first edition of what became the author's best known work is scarce. Half-leather (leather spine and corners) and pebbled cloth covered boards, five raised spine bands, embossed gilt titling to spine, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, 4.5" x 7.5". Pagination: iv, 303; iv, 348; iv, 395. Bookplate of STEPHEN EATON ELAND on the front pastedown of each volume. Condition: Covers are rubbed and scraped at the spine ends, corner tips and edges of the leather, and are sunned at the margins, but remain sturdy and handsome; the top page edges have darkened; Volume I is lacking a blank prelim page (blank prelim page before the title page), otherwise all volumes are complete; there is substantial foxing to the first and last few pages of each volume, otherwise there is only a bit of foxing here and there; other than the foxing on the first and last few pages, the inner pages are complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Dickens, Charles
London: Chapman and Hall, 1859. First edition, first issue of one of Dickens' most enduring works, with p. 213 misnumbered "113," the signature mark "b" at the foot of the plate list, and the misspelling "affetcionately" on line 12, p. 134. Octavo, bound in full leather, gilt titles to the spine, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, inner dentelles. Sixteen plates after H.K. Browne including frontispiece and title vignette. In fine condition. The most famous and possibly the most popular of Dickens's novels, A Tale of Two Cities shows a master of dramatic narrative extracting gold from the ore of history. So great was [Dickens'] enthusiasm for the story that it had indeed 'taken in possession' of him... The force of the novel springs from its exploration of darkness and death but its beauty derives from Dickens' real sense of transcendence, from his ability to see the sweep of destiny" (Ackroyd, 858). The last of Dickens' books to be illustrated by H.K. Browne ("Phiz"), with 16 engraved plates by him. "Browne, for 23 years responsible for all the etchings which had so successful … [Click Below for Full Description]
