Pauquet, Hippolyte
Signed and dated February 2, 1858 by artist. Measuring 25 by 21.5 cm. Pauquet's work in printed form is easy to find; the original sketches are not. Pauquet's work appeared in various fashion periodicals and he also published "Modes et Costumes Historiques" around 1860. He was best known for fashion illustration, but he did other types of book illustration as well. A little light margin soiling. The painting was formerly pasted onto something else, and so on the back of remnants in the corner of this.

MASSEI, GIOVANNI CONTE.
Firenze, M. Cellini, 1858. 8vo. In three uniform contemporary half vellum over marbled boards with black and red title label to spine amd gilt ornamentation. Occassional brown spots throughout, otherwise fine. XXVI, 383, (2) pp.; IV, 550, (2) pp.; IV, 498, (2) pp. First edition of Massei's important work which constitutes one of earliest attempts in Italy to link health problems and poverty. In the present work Massei examines the various health problems that can be linked to poverty, and proposes a number of remedies, chiefly linked to hygiene. He argues against the notion that almsgiving can provide a solution, proposing instead a system whereby municipal aid is offered in people's homes.Previously Massei had done extensive work on public education in Bologna, and was involved in a project to reform public charities in the light of the increasing numbers of poor people. His work with the Società agrarian of Bologna initiated much research on rural poverty and its causes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Holmes Oliver Wendell
Boston Phillips, Sampson and Company 1858. First edition, early issue with the general title-page printed in red, "Valuable Books" ads at rear binding state with monograms and flowers in the corners of the covers. Illustrated with the eight original engravings protected by tissue guards. These illustrations were removed in later issues at the request of the author. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth lettered in gilt on spine, with the called for decorations of monograms and flowers and designs in blind on the covers. viii, 373 including index, 2 ads pp. A fine, bright, clean and very well preserved copy, unusual in this condition. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE QUIRKIEST AND MOST CHARMING BOOKS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. The Grolier Catalogue of One Hundred Influential American Books Printed Before 1900 calls it the "distillation of the intellectual and cultural life of New England at its Brahmin zenith," which is a stuffy way of saying its subject matter ranges amusingly across all the corners of Holmes's.er, The Autocrat's mind. "Autocrat" first appeared in serial form in the first issue of the Atlantic Monthly. It blends the discursive and whimsicalIy comprehending talk of a boarding-house sage with verses, both light and serious. It was followed by two more titles in the "Breakfast-Table" series, their enthusiastic reception of which has been justified by the place they have retained in American letters. [Historical Ephemera].
Thompson, Ct. Printed by J. J. Mason, 1858. 1st printing. Broadside, printed with green ink. 14" x 4-1/4". Age-toning & soiling. 4 horizontal fold-lines, which have old tape reinforcement on the verso. Withal, Very Good. Item #41342 The laying of the transatlantic telegraph cable was an engineering feat of the first magnitude, and was initially accomplished by Cyrus West Field and the Atlantic Telegraph Company. While this 1858 effort lasted barely a month before failure, as a 'proof of concept' effort, it was invaluable. Its more successful successor would come a decade later. This broadside begins by confessing the local populace's sceptical reception to the news of the cable's successful deployment, followed by the confirming text of the 3 first messages transmited: "THE FIRST MESSAGE!" as well as "THE QUEEN'S MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT BUCHANAN" and the "PRESIDENTS REPLY". Reputedly, this broadside came from the Morse family estate, relatives of Samuel Morse the inventor of the telegraph, though this bookseller was unable to confirm this particular provenance. No copy recorded on OCLC. A very rare printed survivor documenting an event that effectively shrank the western world. [Attributes: First Edition]

January 1, 1858. Broadside: Carrier's Address to the Patrons of the Morning Express, January 1, 1858, 11" x 17", headed "Morning Express wishing its patron a happy new year in a prosaic, decorated printing. Ideal for display.<br /><br />Many Carriers' Addresses are humorous in nature; others review the events of the past year, noting the deaths of famous persons or American presidents. Foreign affairs of the day are often prominently featured, and at midcentury the issues of slavery and the Civil War are frequent topics. Poems of a patriotic nature are commonly seen, and the growth of the country through immigration often mentioned. The press comments on itself, and the very active religious press presents its perspective on the events of the day. Perhaps most illuminating today are the poems that comment on the fads, fashions, and inventions of their day.

Nallurutun, Minisanhas; Cornelis Alwis, editor & translator
Colombo Government Printing Office, 1858. First edition. 8vo (21.5 x 13.5 cm), pp.[iv], 123, [1, blank]. With printed Sinhalese text. Bound in contemporary half leather. Spine rubbed and torn at head, with short splits. Otherwise a very good copy. Inscribed by the editor to Reverend William Boake, with Boake's ownership inscription on title-page. Later ownership inscription of C.H.B. Reynolds on front free endpaper. A dictionary of Sinhalese synonyms in verse composed in 1421 and one of the classic texts of the Sri Lankan tradition of philology: "a work of great authority constantly referred to by Singhalese authors. It holds the same position in Singhalese literature, as the Amarakosa vocabulary in the Sanskrit, and Abbidanappadipika in the Pali." (from editor's preface). This work was composed by one the ministers of Parakrama Bahu VI, king of the Sinhalese kingdom of Kotte, in the 15th century. He was a great patron of the arts and his reign is regarded as the golden era of classical Sinhalese literature. Entries are arranged by broad themes: words relating to Heaven; beneath the Earth; the Earth; town; vegetables; the lion; man; the castes: Brahmins, kings, merchants, and mechanics; miscellanea; and "various significations". Manuscripts of Namavaliya abound, but no critical edition had appeared in print: "There is hardly a Singhalese scholar, who is not in possession of a manuscript copy, or to whom its contents are not familiar. Being a work much used, and for the most part transcribed by laymen uninstructed in the Pali and Sanskrit languages, and, consequently, ignora … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arago, Francois; Admiral W.H. Smyth and Robert Grant,
London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855 and 1858. Hardcover. Francois Arago (1786-1853) was an important French astronomer, physicist, and mathematician, who was also a politician for republican causes. For some years before his death, Arago spent much time revising his large collection of manuscripts with a view toward their definitive publication. This work mainly consists of the course of Lectures on Astronomy which he delivered annually at the Observatory of Paris over eighteen years. Each of the volumes is organized by books of several chapters on the subject of that book, resulting in a comprehensive discourse on astronomy and related fields. The text is accompanied by numerous plates and hundreds of wood engravings. Bound in original green cloth bindings. Volume I has been rebacked. Gilt author, title, and volume number to spine. Corners bumped but very good. Interior pages and plates are also in very good condition. A very handsome set of this significant work. Volume I: 707 pages; Volume II: 846 pages including index. This set may require an extra shipping fee. SCI/07415. Very Good.

Mllhausen, Heinrich Baldwin
Leipzig, 1858. [28],494,[2]pp. plus sixteen plates (seven in color, six tinted, and three in black and white) and folding map. Half title. Large, thick quarto. Original gilt-stamped cloth, expertly rebacked, edges neatly refurbished. Some scattered foxing, at times rather heavy, else just about very good. The most important work of this notable German artist and topographer, who accompanied several of the leading western surveys of the 1850s. This book describes his experiences with the Pacific Railroad survey under Lieut. Amiel Whipple, investigating a potential route along the 35th parallel in 1853, which took the party across northern New Mexico and Arizona. The work is notable for its plates of the Pueblo Indians and Mllhausen's account of them. "...In addition to the account in journal form of his experiences as topographer of Whipple's surveying expedition in 1853, there is an account of his experiences in the West in 1851 on a trip from St. Louis to Laramie with Prince Paul of Wurttemberg" - Streeter. Mllhausen's career and the chronology of these expeditions are described in detail by Taft. The TAGEBUCH... is extremely scarce in the marketplace. HOWES M713, "b." ABBEY 661 (ref). [English Churchman and St.James Chronicle].
Original First Edition. London, Published at the Office, No.159, Fleet Street, 1858. Folio. 1252 pages. Hardcover / Original Harlf Leather with gilt lettering on spine and paper-covered-boards. The binding slightly rubbed and stained. Spine slightly splitting. Some paint stains to the spine but overall very good. The interior in excellent and clean condition ! Very Rare Newspaper with all the original advertising ! The English Churchman is a family Protestant newspaper that was founded in 1843. The first edition was published on January 5th 1843. The formal title of the newspaper is English Churchman and St James' Chronicle. St James Chronicle dates from 1761. The paper has a reputation for being outspokenly and unashamedly Protestant, Evangelical, Reformed and anti-ecumenical, believing that the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England are good and true and so it does not recognise non-evangelical Churches as being truly Christian because they have erred in doctrine and practice. Ironically, and contrary to general ecclesiastical trends, the English Churchman began life as an Anglo-Catholic newspaper but it was soon taken into evangelical hands where it has remained ever since. While the doctrinal basis of the English Churchman is the 39 Articles of Religion, the newspaper is not an organ of the Church of England. The current editor is a minister in the Church of England (Continuing) which also holds to the old Evangelical and Reformed Anglican position as won by the Protestant Reformation. At the time of the death of Pope John Paul II the English Churchman was one of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Judah P BENJAMIN
Washington DC: G. S. Gideon, Printer, 1858. Condition: Good +. Octavo, 29pp. A good or better copy in clasped wraps. A unique binding, held together with a small clasp at the top of the front wrap. Front wrap itself is detached, but present, with some chipping. The binding is otherwise intact, and there is some age-toning to the edges of the margins. The text is bright and clean. One thin crease through the middle of the pamphlet, not affecting the legibility of the text. Overall a clean, square example. This is an impassioned defense of slavery as an institution, and of the spread of it into Kansas and the expanding US territory. Benjamin, one of the first prominent American Jewish politicians, was at the time a Senator from Louisiana, and would become in a few years' time the Secretary of State of the Confederate States of America. A scarce and important pamphlet. Sabin 4705. [Attributes: First Edition]

(BINDINGS - JEWELLED). FALCONER, WILLIAM
Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1858. From the superb collection of American bibliophile Phoebe Boyle, this is a magnificent example of a jewelled binding from the Edwardian golden age of the craft, when Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Riviere engaged in a competition to produce the most lavish works imaginable and thereby created treasures sought after by generations of bibliophiles. Perhaps the premier practitioner of the art of the jewelled binding, the atelier founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe reached its zenith in the first dozen years of the 20th century, when their most gorgeous gem-encrusted bindings were produced. The binders drew detailed designs that reflected the contents of the book in question, and even went so far as to register some of these--like the present item--with the Patent Office to ensure they were not copied. Stephen Ratcliffe estimates that "no more than 300 were ever produced," and given the labor-intensive process required to produce a binding like the present one, this small number is not surprising: hundreds of man-hours would have been required to craft these intricate inlays and onlays, to make the thousands of applications of gold, and to set the dozens of gemstones. Our appropriately nautical binding covers a fine illustrated edition of the popular poem by Falconer (1732-69), recounting the wreck of a ship on the coast of Greece. Written in three cantos, the work first appeared in 1762, with revised versions issued in 1764 and 1769, the year the author was drowned at sea, himself the victim of a shipwreck. The present edition … [Click Below for Full Description]
