If looking with a smartphone, please click on DESCRIPTION to view the additional pictures. Offered for sale, a spectacular book from the Barratt estate. This book belonged to Judge (and book collector) Norris Stanley Barratt 1862-1924 and passed down to his grandson who is now 86 years of age. The book is the 1858 Encyclopedia Of Rural Sports that is bound in red leather with incredible gold decorations along the spine. The book is the 3rd edition that has a complete account (Historical and Practible and Descriptive) of HUNTING, SHOOTING, RACING, etc. by Delabere P. Blaine. It has over 600 engravings on wood by R. Branston from drawings by Leech, Alken, T. Landseer, Dickes Etc., in its 1245 pages. It was printed in London by LONGMAN, BROWN, GREEN, LONGMANS & ROBERTS in 1858. The book itself is over 3 1/4" thick and measures 8 1/2" tall by 6" wide. The spine features a Hunting dog, crossed rifles, horse shoe with riding crop, and trout on a fishing line all in gold impressed into the red leather. Having collected books for decades it is easily the prettiest and most impressive volume I have ever come across. Other than a few writings inside, the book is near mint condition. A first edition in green cloth sells for $750+. For anything less than $500 I will gladly keep the book myself. The cost of shipping with insurance is free. William Makepeace Thackeray
London: 1858. [AMERICANA, SETS, HISTORICAL NOVELS, THACKERAY] THACKERAY, William Makepeace (Author & Illustrator) "THE VIRGINIAN'S - A Tale of the Last Century" London. Bradbury & Evans. 1858 - 1859. First Edition (book form - misspelling on p. 207; Ch. 47 & 48 misnumbered). Two volumes octavo. (5.75 in x 8.5 in) Bound in light brown calf with gilt neat lines. Marbled endpapers. Rub to crown of vol 2. Light tideline to top panel of first volume. All edges gilt. 48 engraved plates by the author (the last he would do for his own work). Save for a minor stain to first 15 pp of first volume contents quite clean. Overall, very good or better. A nice set of this first book edition of this tale of two brothers split by the conflict which birthed America. This copy quite collectable in that it exhibits NONE OF THE USUAL FOXING TO THE PLATES which normally plague this title. This extraordinary detail is important given this was Thackeray's last title for which he executed the illustrations himself. Quite scarce thus. Please email any questions -. Widmung Franz von Kobell an Justus von Liebig in Buch! Kobell, Franz von:
Brandstetter Verlag, Leipzig 1858. 2. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

In 1856 a work with mostly the same content, though decidedly smaller was published under the title 'The War' in 1856. William Howard Russell is regarded as one of the first modern war correspondents. This work is formed of his dispatches via telegraph during the war and is therefore a fascinating first-hand account. Russell spent twenty-two months covering the Crimean War and therefore this work covers key events such as the Siege of Sevastopol and the Charge of the Light Brigade. This volume covers the period from March 6 1854 to June 29 1856. Russell's writings for the Times were the first time that the British public could read about the reality of warfare. [BONN].
VD16 K 2671 (6 copies); Weller, Die falschen und fingierten Druckorte (1858), p. 5 & (1864), p. 7. One of four rare editions (all printed in the same year) of a pamphlet on the capitulation of Bonn in January 1584, during the Cologne War (1583-1589). Bonn was the capital city of the Archbishop-Prince Elector of Cologne, Gebhard, Truchsess of Waldburg, who in 1582 had converted to Calvinism. When he refused to relinquish the Electorate the remaining Catholics elected another archbishop, Ernst of Bavaria, of the House of Wittelsbach. This conflict soon escalated in an all-out war. Bonn was governed by Karl von Waldburg (1548-1593), who was appointed stadtholder in 1583 by his brother Gebhard. The sewing has come loose between the quires, but otherwise in very good condition, with only a small chip at the head of the title-page.

Cincinnati: Enquirer Print, 1858. Good.. Broadside, approximately 14.5 x 7 inches. Matted. Internal tear near top edge, slightly affecting text. Light dust soiling, heavier at foot; some creasing and foxing at edges. An attractive broadside advertisement for the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad, promoting its newly completed line from Cincinnati to St. Louis. The broadside highlights the O&M as the "Shortest and Quickest" route from Cincinnati to Indianapolis, Vincennes, and St. Louis, travelling on the "Only Wide Gauge in the West," with two trains leaving Cincinnati daily and arriving in St. Louis "two hours in advance of any other route." Ohio & Mississippi passengers enjoy "wide and spacious Saloon Cars, unattainable on narrow gauge Roads, and cross the River at Illinoistown, on arrival." By contrast, the dimwitted passengers of the Terre Haute and Alton, "wait on bank of River one hour before crossing." With a woodcut illustration and a bracing combination of woodcut types. THEODORE ROOSEVELT
THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919). Roosevelt was the Twenty-Sixth President. TLS. 1pg. September 13, 1918. New York City. A typed letter signed "Theodore Roosevelt" as former President. On his official letterhead from The Kansas City Star, he wrote to his friend Dr. Alexander Lambert, who was then serving as director of Red Cross civilian relief in France during World War One. The letter concerns Roosevelt's son, Archibald, who had recently been wounded fighting in France: "Dear Alex: That's a mighty nice letter of yours. I thank you for it. Archie has come home very much better in spirits than we had hoped. We are following your directions about having him treated by Dr. Tilney. I am very much obliged to you for having given me such a clear idea of what had happened. Until I saw him I did not know that he had been hit by two distinct and separate shells. Give my love to Nellie. What you say about the ruthless destruction wrought by the Germans in their retreat is really appalling. It is dreadful to think what fifty years of exactly the wrong kind of education has done for them. Henry Stimson was over the other day. He has been made a Colonel. Evidently he has done splendidly, and it was a pleasure to see him. Faithfully yours, Theodore Roosevelt". Roosevelt mentions Lambert's advice that Archie seek treatment from pioneering neurologist Dr. Frederick Tilney. He also mentions politician Henry L. Stimson, to whom Roosevelt had given his first significant appointment in 1906. Although Archie's wounds were severe enough to have him classified as disabled, he later served in Wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Front hinge the slightest bit tender, else a tight and square copy. With faint ownership signature of Mrs. A.N. Williams along the gutter of the front pastedown; ownership signature to the header of the front flyleaf reads "Louisa Williams Sept. 21, 1858." Note in ink to the header of Chapter 1 reads "from Albert." Collates xvii, [1], 19-132, [12]: complete. Light scattered foxing throughout. In all, a pleasing copy owned and used by two early women. OCLC locates 8 copies worldwide, of which 6 are in the U.S. This title is also scarce in trade, the present being one of two copies on the market and the only copy in original unrepaired cloth. The infamous Lola Montez managed to fit multiple lives into one: actress and dancer, courtesan, mistress to King Ludwig I of Bavaria, Countess of Landsfeld, and finally revolution-era emigree to California. In each of these roles, she relied on a finely honed sense of social diplomacy and wit to accomplish her ends; and The Arts of Beauty is the perfect textual product to encapsulate these skills. Engaging with classical satirical texts like Ovid's Ars Amatoria as well as contemporary conduct guides penned by men for the "benefit" of women, Montez composes a manual that is part informative beauty instructor and part parody. The Greek and Roman sources she references point to her intellectual depth and position of authority -- on the first page of the preface alone appear names and quotations … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAND George
Bel exemplaire. Vallée, 880.

MEYERBEER, Giacomo 1791-1864
1 page. Quarto. Dated Nice, March 23, 1858. On Meyerbeer's personal letterhead, with his monogrammatic device blindstamped to upper left corner. A letter of introduction for a Mr. Behr, whom Meyerbeer suggests would be an excellent correspondent on German matters for one of Millaud's journals, possible La Presse: "Behr, a man of letters in Berlin, established for some time in Paris ... through his relations with all the apexes of literature, arts, and men of politics in Germany, can provide very interesting news about everything remarkable that is produced in Germany, and would be able to perhaps be of service as a German correspondent for your journal." Slightly worn and browned; a few very small stains, not affecting text; creased at folds; laid down to mounting board at upper margin resulting in minor wrinkling. Meyerbeer was "the most frequently performed opera composer during the 19th century, linking Mozart and Wagner." Matthias Brzoska in Grove Music Online. "Meyerbeer was the first composer to realize the importance of the press in promoting his works. He is even said to have invented the modern press conference, commplete with refresshments. Such close contacts with members and owners of the press were quite useful for favors and introductions, as can be seen in this letter." William Meredith, Director of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies. Millaud was the publisher of several contemporary journals, including Liberté, Journal des chemins de fer, Conseiller du peuple, the Petit Journal, and La Presse. Item #32079. Paris: Correspondance de Napoléon 1 Er 1858-1866 Henri Plon /J. Dumaine 20 Volumes The publication of the Correspondance of Napoleon has in itself a long history. In 1858, Napoleon III gave the order for the publication of the Official Correspondance of Napoleon I. The 28 volumes which were to be produced after 11 years of work did not contain all the letters. The 22,000 which went to make up this Correspondance contained also the orders, bulletins and decrees, whilst leaving it to be understood that there existed beween 30 and 35,000 letters proper. A first editorial committee set about completing the project, and published the great majority of the letters dated October 1793 to AUgust 1807. One of its committee's boasts was that it was "scrupulously forbidden to alter, cut or modify the texts of the Emperor's letters."(1) On 3 February, 1864, Napoleon III disbanded the first commission and appointed a second, under the presidency of his cousin, Prince Napoléon ("Plon-Plon"). The latter, less scrupulous than the former with regard to the text, engaged in almost systematic bowdlerisation and alteration. The declaration of the commission on this subject as published in the preface to tome XVI of the correspondance is well known: "In general, we have taken as our guide the simple idea, namely that our vocation was to publish what the Emperor would have made public if, with an aim to live beyond his age and to outstrip the justice of the age, he had wished to show to posterity his person and his system." [Click Below for Full Description]

DAVID LIVINGSTONE
PHILADELPHIA: J.W. BRADLEY. VERY GOOD. From 1858, this is the classic Africa travel narrative, Livingstone's Travels and Researches in South Africa a Sketch of 16 Years' Residence in the Interior of Africa. From the Personal Narrative of David Livingstone, LL.D Illustrated with numerous engravings. Published by J.W. Bradley in Philadelphia, 1858. We note that Harper & Brothers published an authorized edition the same year. Was this one a pirate? We're not sure. Sized 8x5 inches, 440 pages, handsomely bound in period leather with marbled boards and marbled page block. Very good condition. Our scanner is adding some white lines to our images. There is an inked inscription, H.G. Pratt, Pruitt, or something similar, 1859. David Livingstone (19 March 1813 - 1 May 1873) was a Scottish physician, Congregationalist, and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era. He had a mythical status that operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags-to-riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of British commercial and colonial expansion. Livingstone's fame as an explorer and his obsession with learning the sources of the Nile River was founded on the belief that if he could solve that age-old mystery, his fame would give him the influence to end the East African Arab-Swahili slave trade. "The Nile sources," he told a friend, "are valuable … [Click Below for Full Description]

… [Click Below for Full Description]

Montez, Madame Lola [Countess of Landsfeld]
New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, 1858. First edition. Fine. Original publisher's cloth binding stamped in gilt and blind. Brown coated endpapers. Small spot to front board. The Greek and Roman sources she references point to her intellectual depth and position of authority -- on the first page of the preface alone a … [Click Below for Full Description]
