Pesten [i.e., Budapest]: Lauffer es Stolp Kiado Könyvkereskedese Tulajdona, 1858. Good plus.. 175pp., plus twelve tinted lithograph plates, including frontispiece. Original cloth boards, spine gilt and stamped in blind. Minor patches of discoloration to boards; spine ends and corners lightly worn; front joint starting at head. Scattered pencil annotations. Minor dampstaining to frontispiece, light foxing and dust soiling throughout. The unauthorized, first edition of these letters describing the American West by a Hungarian observer. Janos Xantus had escaped to the United States in 1851 from Hungary, where he had been involved in the tribulations between his own country and Austria in the late 1840s. "Unable to find work in the United States, he joined the Hungarian colony in New Buda, Iowa, which he left a year later with mutual disaffection. In 1855, without job prospects, he became naturalized in order to enlist in the U.S. Army, something he found so demeaning that he assumed a new name until discharged, Louis de Vésey. Xántus's first post was Fort Riley in Kansas Territory. Assigned hospital duty, he served under Dr. William A. Hammond, close friend of Spencer F. Baird, assistant secretary for the new Smithsonian Institution. Hammond introduced Xántus to Baird by mail, suggesting that Xántus might be a good collector. Thus began a seven-year correspondence between Baird and Xántus." - ANB. "Letters from North America, dated from 1852 to 1857, describing travels and researches chiefly in the middle western, and southwestern parts of the United States, including vi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Texas]
Waco, 1858. Very good.. 40 manuscript leaves, on rectos only of legal-sized sheets. Ribbon tied, affixed with county seal. Light offsetting from seal on first leaf. Light wear and tanning; a few stray ink stains. A certified manuscript record of a civil case adjudicated in Waco, Texas in 1858 that was headed to appeal in the Supreme Court at Austin. The case concerned the county courthouse, and work done on the construction of its cupola. Thomas Linard, on behalf an alternate Mathew McConahey (who had apparently died), had sued the contractor of the courthouse, Robert H. Smith, for nonpayment of wages and expenses for work on the structure, with favorable results. His estate was requesting two hundred dollars plus court expenses. Enjoyably, the judge in the initial hearing of the case was none other than R.E.B. Baylor, for whom the university was named, though it had not yet moved to Waco. The verdict in the first case fell in favor of McConahey's estate, a ruling issued by Judge Nicholas W. Battle, a prominent citizen and district attorney in Waco in the early 1850s, before he was appointed to a judgeship in the Texas Third District in 1858, the year this case took place. That Smith had legal problems regarding the nonpayment of his employees probably pointed to larger issues with his construction business -- the courthouse, already the second such edifice in the history of McLennan County at that point, had to be torn down in the 1870s less that twenty years after it was completed because of problems with the structure, including two fatalities due to faulty secon … [Click Below for Full Description]

[JOHNSTON, George Liddell; James Albert Buchanan Jay.]
[Herefordshire, , c.1858]. Finely executed alphabet book Landscape quarto (260 × 370 mm). Quarter blue skiver commercial album, drab grey-green boards, title and illustrations to front cover in manuscript in black ink, 60 thick stock paper leaves, stitched. Spine a little rubbed, ends and tips slightly worn, front inner hinge split but contents sound, a little foxing to contents, otherwise bright and clean; remarkably well-preserved. A finely executed alphabet book of captioned pen-and-ink drawings, featuring personified letters in the Victorian grotesque tradition. The drawings were executed by a talented amateur artist, carefully copied from a rare, privately-published work, The Alphabet Illustrated, by Reverend George Liddell Johnston, a feature of which is the caricatured, oversized heads of the figures in a similar vein to the illustrations Henry Holliday later produced for Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark (1876). "An artist of extraordinarily grotesque vision", Johnston (1817–1902) was ordained as a minister in 1849, leaving Northumbria to begin his ecclesiastical career in Exeter; he subsequently served as chaplain to the British Embassy in Vienna from 1856 to 1885 before returning to London. In 1969 a sketchbook of his work in Vienna was discovered, filled with drawings "upon which his reputation as an artist almost entirely rests". Just two copies of his Alphabet Illlustrated, published around 1855, are held insitutionally (Princeton and Cambridge). The amateur artist who painstakingly copied the work was James Albert Buchanan "Bertie" Jay (1839-188 … [Click Below for Full Description]

African Americana] [Brooklyn] African Civilization Society
African Civilization Society, New York. The African Civilization Society was formed in 1858 by several prominent members of Brooklyn's Weeksville community. The second article of this document, the organization's constitution, states its goals as follows: "The objects of this Society shall be the evangelization and civilization of Africa, and of the descendents of African ancestors in any portion of the earth, wherever dispersed. Also, the destruction of the African slave trade, but the introduction of lawful commerce and trade into Africa; the promotion and growth of cotton and other prodcuts there. the elevation of the colored population of our own country, and of other lands." The group's founding members included Henry Highland Garnet, Martin Delany, Junius Morel and many other prominent members of the African-American community in Brooklyn. With the exception of Theodore Cuyler, the only white founding member, the organization had the distinction of being one of the only organizations of its kind to be organized almost exclusively by African-Americans (a trait that differentiated the group from the African Colonization Society). Frederick Douglass, though friends with many of the organization's founding members, opposed the idea of African colonization and was therefore not a supporter. The constitution lays out thirteen articles of incorporation, many dealing with the logistical concerns of the organization. The preamble lays out the mission of the organization and extols the agricultural potential of Africa: "The facts which have become public concerning [Africa's] c … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Lincoln, Abraham]
[Springfield, Il, 1858. 8pp., printed in double columns on two quarto leaves, one laid into the other. Outer leaf splitting along central vertical fold, small holes in inner margin where staples have been removed. Small hole in second column of first leaf (perhaps a paper flaw) costing a total of ten letters of text on the recto and verso. Light toning, minimal foxing. About very good overall. In a cloth chemise and blue half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. The only separate printing of this important address given by Abraham Lincoln at Springfield, Illinois, as he ran for the United States Senate. Lincoln's speech, which preceded his famed debates with Stephen A. Douglas, puts forth the great themes that marked his political philosophy during the last decade of his life. Urging that slavery be placed on course for "ultimate extinction," he repeats his "House Divided" warning, first given at the State Republican Convention a month earlier. He insists that the Kansas-Nebraska bill was "the beginning of a conspiracy" to nationalize slavery. Attacking Douglas, and defending himself against the charge that he would "invite a war of sections," he stands on "the principles of our Declaration of Independence." Though blacks are not the equal of whites "in all respects," the Declaration "does mean to declare that all men are equal in some respects; they are equal in the right to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'" Most significantly Lincoln asserts that "In the right to put into his mouth the bread that his own hands have earned, he is the equal of every o … [Click Below for Full Description]

As onward from the spot I passed, One lingering look behindI cast; A wave came rolling high and fast, And washed my linesaway. And so, methought, 'twill shortly be With every mark on Earthfrom me: A wave of dark oblivion's sea Will sweep across theplace Where I have trod the sandy shore Of time, and been, to beno more, Of me - my day - the name I bore, To leave nor track nortrace. First Edition 31 pages. A Southerner argues that a revived foreign slave trade was crucial to the Southern economy. Spratt believed that importing new slaves from Africa would reduce the price of slaves in the United States, lower labor costs, and bring slaves within the economic reach of the average Southern man. His views were not widely adopted, in large part because existing slave owners did not want to see their property devalued. Indeed, Virginia joined the Confederacy with the condition that the ban on imported slaves would be continued (see Conrad, In the Hands of Strangers, p. 427-428).
