[4]-VII-164-207 pp., 12 pl. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Reeve, L. A.
London, Lovell A. Reeve, 1858-1859. 4to (28.0 x 22.0 cm). Title page and 37 hand-coloured lithographed plates with explanatory text leaves and printed index. Original "The Oast House, Brook, Ashford" pictorial wrappers. Rare copy of the gastropod genus Columbella (= Columbellidae, or dove shells). Part of the Conchologia Iconica, started by Lovell Reeve in 1843 and finished (rather than completed) long after Reeve's death in 1865 by G. B. Sowerby, comprising 20 volumes in all. This monograph includes the description and illustration of species described by Reeve himself, and by G. B. Sowerby II, Gaskoin and others but not figured before. Most of the descriptions in the Conchologia Iconica (of species and specimens) are based on material collected by the most famous shell collector of the 19th century, Hugh Cuming (1791-1865). "...Reeve had become acquainted with Cuming, and Reeve's life was changed forever....Their association was such as to encourage Reeve to begin the Conchologia Iconica in 1843 primarily for description of Cuming material. Many of the Part covers for the Iconica carry the wording 'Illustrated chiefly from the Cumingian Collection'" (Petit). The wrappers-with L. Reeve & Co. 's Kent address-indicate that the hand colouring might have been done at a later time, following original examples. Paper spine cover chipped. A clean copy with finely and accurately hand-coloured plates. Caprotti, p. 213; Nissen ZBI, 3331; Petit Zootaxa 1648, p. 30. Very good. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Müller, Carl Wilhelm (1839 ? Dresden ? 1904)
1858. Feder in Braun, braun laviert, über Bleistift, auf hellbraunem Velin, rechts unten signiert ?C.W. Müller?, verso betitelt. 27:21,8 cm. C.W. Müller war 1858-1864 Schüler von L. Richter (1803-1884). Zusammen mit V.P. Mohn (1842-1911) und A.L.

Arrowsmith, John
London: John Arrowsmith, 10 Soho Square, 1858. One of John Arrowsmith's superb maps of Australia, this one highlighting the gold districts, and surprisingly, not listed in Tooley or Trove. The map encompasses the coast from Moreton Bay to Spencer Gulf, with an inset map of Australia in the top left corner. The newly proposed New South Wales/Queensland border has been instituted, however the question of the western Queensland border has been avoided by the inset of Australia in the top left corner. (Interestingly, the vignette map of Australia shows the northern border of NSW being an extension of the northern border of South Australia, and "North Australia" is above both of them, not Queensland.) There are 4 lists on the map, "Reference "Gold Fields in New South Wales" ; Counties of New South Wales (68 are listed); "Routes of Travellers into the interior listing 14 expeditions from Oxley in 1817 to Streleski (sic) [Strzelecki] in 1840; Counties in Port Phillip (24 are listed). "London Pubd 2d Jany 1858, by John Arrowsmith, 10 Soho Square". 24 x 20 1/2". Steel engraving with original hand color, central fold. Excellent condition.

Morton, Henry; Hale, Charles Reuben; and Jones, S. Huntington).
(L. N. Rosenthal for the) Philomathean Society, Philadelphia. pp. (2) [Title & Dedication]; 1-72; 81-136; (24) [Appendix] + An added colored scenic plate. Lithographed throughout, with many pages having colored illustrations and highly decorative frames. The lithographed text appears as a hand written manuscript. 4to. 230 mm. Original illustrated paper boards binding, with minor defects. Spine perished. The owner of this was the son of Robert Heysham Sayre, a major figure with Bethlehem Steel and the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Hardbound. Good. A remarkable achievement and landmark in the history of American color printing, and American scholarship. Both text and illustrations were produced entirely by lithography, requiring more than 400 stones. Most pages have borders. The transcriptions and translations are ornamented with colorful Egyptian motifs. Morton lacked enough lithography stones for the entire book; as each page was completed, the stone was reground and reused. This first edition of only 400 copies appeared in December 1858 and sold out immediately. Three Penn students translated the Rosetta Stone when a plaster facsimile of the Stone was presented to the University. The hieroglyphics of the original inscription are reproduced, with the hieratic and Greek. Each member of the committee wrote his contributions in his own hand reproduced here. Morton devised all the Egyptian designs & decorations; he undertook all the lithography himself, taking impressions of the stones under the direction of Max Rosenthal. Bennett p. 93; Reese 91. - New York: Derby & Jackson, 1858. Three volumes: xxiv,645; xii,694; xii,731pp., plus two frontispieces in each of volumes one and two, and six (of seven) additional facsimile plates (three folding). Thick octavos. Original blindstamped pebbled black cloth, spines gilt. Cloth lightly rubbed and faded, spine gilt dull. Front hinge of first volume weakening. Small closed tear in leaf with pp.319-320 in first volume (with no loss of text), old ink stains in lower margin of leaves with pp.565-572 in second volume, else very clean and fresh internally. Very good. An attractive set of what was the standard and most influential life of Thomas Jefferson until Dumas Malone undertook his multi-volume biography a century later. Randall interviewed members of Jefferson's family, and also had access to family papers (later dispersed), giving his biography an intimacy that broke new ground, and that was hard to match by later writers. Randall balanced the story of the public Jefferson with much information on his domestic life, helping to rekindle interest in a founder whose views and reputation had taken a beating in the three decades since his death. Malone himself notes the irony in the publication date of Randall's work, on the eve of the Civil War, when southerners were deriding Jefferson over his notions of human equality, and Unionists were deploring his emphasis on states' rights. Merrill Peterson, writing on the development of the Jefferson image in the popular consciousness, called Randall's biography a "resounding triumph.for the better part of a century, the outstanding singl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baudelaire, Charles, French writer (1821-1867).
[Paris], 17. XI. 1858. [Click Below for Full Description]

Collingwood, William, R.I.N. surveyor (fl. 1840s-1860s)
[Mostly Arabian Gulf], 1856-1858. Three hand-drawn watercolours showing the "Coromandel" (148 x 225 mm), the "Tigris" (178 x 240 mm), and the "Georgiana" (142 x 240 mm), mounted on backing paper, separately matted. With a presentation leather-cased 1½-inch three-draw leather-covered surveying telescope and compass compendium by Andrew Ross, London, contained in 29 cm leather carry case with lid enclosing a lacquered-brass compass, collapsed length 25 cm, expands to 71 cm. A striking collection of original watercolours drawn by Lieutenant William Collingwood, civil engineer in the Royal Indian Navy, during his surveying mission to the Middle East in the mid-1850s. The three ships, all built for the "Honourable [East India] Company", are the H.C. Screw Troop Ship "Coromandel" ("1112 Tons. Commander C. D. Campbell I.N. London to Madras Aug. to Nov. 1856"), the H.C. Brigantine "Tigris" ("Persian Gulf. Entering "Cheroo" Bay. August 1857"), and the H.C. Schooner "Georgiana" ("Lieut. Collingwood Comd. off 'Karack', Feb. 1858"). While the exact location of the "Coromandel" at the time of sketching is not identified (though Collingwood was undoubtedly in the Arabian area at the time), the other two ships are clearly sailing the Arabian Gulf. The "Tigris" is shown entering Cheroo Bay (Chiruyeh, Bandar-e Chiru), on the south coast of Persia, opposite Inderabi Island; the bay was popular with navigators in the region for offering safe shelter from western and northwestern winds, with regular soundings of up to ten fathoms quite near the shore. The "Georgiana" is pictured farther north … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harrison, Benjamin
Indianapolis, 1858. 14" x 8-1/2" legal autograph document signed. 3pp + docketing information on page [4]. Entirely in manuscript. Very Good. Harrison was the great-grandson of the Virginia Signer, grandson of President William Henry Harrison, Brevet Brigadier General in the Civil War, Indiana U.S. Senator 1881-1887, and President of the United States from 1889-1893. Harrison finished his law studies in Ohio, and moved to Indianapolis in 1854, where he practiced law. He joined the Republican Party, campaigned for Fremont, and was elected City Attorney in 1856. In 1858, he commenced a law partnership with William Wallace. This document is the Complaint, Affidavit, and Bond in Attachment in behalf of Harrison's clients, Lipman Marks and Marx Leon, brothers-in-law and Jewish clothiers in Muncie, in a suit to collect a debt from Adrian Rivet. Harrison sued Rivet, a prominent Indiana businessman who had been born in France, in the Marion County Common Pleas Court. The Complaint alleges, first, that Rivet signed, on October 20 1858, a note promising to pay plaintiffs $264.31 in thirty days; and, second, that Rivet signed, on June 7, 1858, a note promising to pay plaintiffs $300.00 in six months. Harrison signs the writ twice on page 3, as notary public acknowledging the oaths of plaintiffs, and as attorney seeking attachment of Rivet's goods. The document is also signed 'Wallace & Harrison' on the first page and on the fourth page. Harrison as President demonstrated his empathy with the Jewish people. His December 1891 Message to Congress expressed concern over … [Click Below for Full Description]
