Ca. 1910s. Oblong Folio (ca. 26x34,5 cm). Twelve album leaves. Ninety-six mounted gelatin silver prints, each ca. 7x10 cm (2 ¾ x 4 in). No captions. Period brown quarter faux leather album with paper boards, rubbed on extremities, corners slightly bumped. Several images slightly faded, but overall a very good album. Interesting album of rare photos of Blagoveshchensk, the centre of the Russian Amur oblast and an important port on the Amur River located just about 500 meters from Chinese city of Heihe on the other bank of the river. Blagoveshchensk was founded on the confluence of the Amur and Zeya Rivers in 1858 and became an important trade center in the early 20th century due to the lucrative gold extraction industry on the river and the proximity to the state border with China. The main street of Blagoveshchensk - Bolshaya - accommodated the offices of the main Siberian trade houses, the port numbered over 150 steamers and over 200 barges. The photos were apparently taken by a well-off Blagoveshchensk resident, and include over a dozen views of the Bolshaya Street (now Lenina Street), showing Kunst and Albers department store (built in 1894, one image shows the store with the sign "Christmas fair"), Siberian Trade Bank, Trade house "Kokovin and Basov," Torgovaya Square (now Victory Square) with open air wooden pavilions, shops of I.K. [?] Mazur, V.M. Pankov, Matveyenko bros., "Japanese shop Tokio- Yoko, goldsmith," garden supplies shop, first city electric station "Vseobshchaya Kompaniya Elektrichestva" (built in 1908), Cathedral of the Intercession of the Theotokos (dem … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEYER, Edward
Richmond, Virginia: Edward Beyer, 1858. Tinted lithograph, 'Taken from Nature by Ed. Beyer', printed by Rau & Son in Dresden. An exemplary print from one of the greatest American view books: `a major outstanding item' (Bennett) Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850's. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the title notes that the copyright was registered by Beyer in the District of Virginia, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden or Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views were generally printed in black with, generally, two further colours. The cavern system was discovered in 1804 by 18-year-old Bernard Weyer, a young trapper, looking for his missing trap. He named it Weyer's Cave, after himself, and, after exploring it for two years, opened it for the public, the first show cave of the United State. Weyer's Cave is now called the Grand Caverns. It is located in the central Shenandoah Valley in the town of Grottoes, Virginia. Deak writes of Beyer, "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places...Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIVARA, Joaquim Heliodoro da Cunha].
Nova Goa, Na Imprensa Nacional, 1858. - 2 works in 1 volume. 4°, early plain blue-grey wrappers (some tears; spine defective). Some browning; occasional light foxing. In very good condition. 121 pp. [final page misnumbered 221 and corrected in manuscript]. *** FIRST EDITIONS. Both works deal with Portuguese patronage in the East, a question much debated after the 1838 papal bull that suppressed the dioceses of Cochim, Meliapor, Cranganor and Malacca. Cunha Rivara was impelled to write by a pastoral address of the Vicar General in Bombay, Fr. Cunha Rivara was later appointed Comissãrio Regio to redefine the boundaries of Indian bishoprics belonging to the Real Padroado. An English translation of the Reflexões was printed in Madras, 1858, and of the Aditamentos in Madras, 1859.Cunha Rivara (1809-1879) was born in Arrayollos, where he began his studies. He continued his education in Evora and Coimbra, despite interruptions due to the Civil War. He later served in the Adminstração Geral de Évora, then took a chair in Philosophy at the Lyceu de Évora. A learned scholar, he was appointed Bibliothecario na Biblioteca Eborense in December of 1836. He continued serving the State, and in 1855 was appointed Secretario Geral do Governo do Estado da India, a post which he held until 1872. In addition to his role as public servant, Cunha Rivara was also a founding member of the Instituto Vasco da Gama. A p … [Click Below for Full Description]
