Overall size: 20 3/4 x 178 inches. Folds into a contemporary green cloth-backed box with gilt edges Provenance: Ludwig II (contemporary manuscript inscription on a small sheet affixed inside the front cover of the box) Among the earliest photographic panoramic city views ever accomplished. Georg Böttger (1821-1901) began his career as an engraver and lithographer, taking up photography circa 1850. His earliest photographic works were portraits and architectural studies, the latter particularly including monuments dedicated to Ludwig I and II. In 1854, he participated in the Deutsche Industrieausstellung, and would both teach photography and sell photographic equipment. In the 1860s he would photographically document bridge and railroad engineering projects in Germany, and in 1872 be named the official photographer of the Bavarian royal family. The present panorama is by far his most famous image, being among the largest photographs accomplished to that date, the earliest 360 degree photographic city view, and among the earliest photographic panoramas ever taken (preceded only by a panorama of Paris by Bisson freres in 1855 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Catlin, George
New York: Currier & Ives, 1858. Handcolored lithograph. Sheet size: 18 1/8 x 23 1/16 inches. Very good. A very rare Currier and Ives issue of this classic image of life on the Western Plains before the coming of the white man. Nathaniel Currier & James Ives, the most successful print publishers of their era, published only a few of Catlin's images and all are now particularly rare. Catlin's description of his own version of this plate ("Buffalo Hunt, Wolf Skin Mask," plate 13 from CATLIN'S NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO) is equally valid when applied to the present Currier & Ives issue: "The Indian, superior in craft to both...[the buffalo and wolf], and...[not owning] a horse, has [adopted]...the stratagem represented in this plate, of profiting by these circumstances, by placing himself under the skin of a white wolf, with his weapons in hand, in which plight he often creeps over the level prairies (where there is no object to conceal him) to close company with the unsuspecting herd....In this plate is a just representation of the level prairies which often occur for many miles together, affording to the eye of a traveller, in all directions, a complete type of the ocean in a calm; green near and around him, but changing to blue in the distance; without tree or shrub, or slightest undulation to break the perfect line of the surrounding horizon." Catlin summarized the Native American as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, - yet honourable, contemplative and religious being." In a famous passage from the preface of his NORTH … [Click Below for Full Description]

Manuscript letters containing firsthand accounts of the First Battle of Taku Forts in May, and the Battle of Canton in December, with shocking details of brutality, penned by a participant in the latter, a marine serving in China on HMS Surprise, identified only as Thomas. 8vo. Two letters and one partial letter, 10 pages combined. Single and double leafs, blue tissue-like letter paper measuring approximately 13 x 21 cm. Some age-toning, repaired tears at folds, otherwise in very good condition. The recipient of this correspondence is Julia, the writer's wife and mother of his children, one of whom he refers to a "Little Thomas." HMS Surprise, a British gunboat, had on 4 May 1857 departed England for anti-slavery duties on the West Coast of Africa. Her commission was soon changed however, being redirected to serve on the Coast of China where the Second Opium War was intensifying and the British government was preparing to launch offensives against the Chinese. On 13 November she 1857 arrived in Hong Kong. Captain Samuel Gurney Cresswell, commanded the ship, which was to intended to be used as a despatch steamer. As revealed in the present correspondence, however, HMS Surprise and her crew saw much frontline action in the Second Opium War, participating in at least two pivotal engagements - the First Battle of Taku Forts and the Battle of Canton. A firsthand account of the Battle of Canton, 28-31 December 1857, is described by the mariner in the earliest letter of the lot, a partial letter which includes a mention of the death of Captain William Thornton Bate.Another rare fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jamin was a professor of physics at l'Ecole Polytechnique and received the Rumford Medal (at the time one of the highest honors in the field) in 1858 for his work on light. His name is one of the 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. The first volume contains "the materials required for admission to the school," while the second two are made up of "all the subjects dealt with at l'Ecole Polytechnique during the two years of studies." The first book is composed of chapters on basic physics, such as "inertia," "uniform movement," "independence of the effects of simultaneous forces," "Pascal's Device," "Principle of Archimedes", "Hypothesis of latent electricity." The remaining two, which make up the curriculum taught at Ecole Polytechnique in the mid-19th century, include more technical lessons on subjects such as "evaporation and boiling," "vapor and elastic force," "The Mechanical Theory of Heat," "Sources of Heat," "On the Numerical Evaluation of Sounds," "The mode and speed of propagation of vibrations in an indefinite environment," "On the propagation of light in a homogenous environment," "On the reciprocal mechanical actions between currents and magnets."

von Tempsky, G.F.
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Edited by J.S. Bell. Five chromolithographs, including one folding, with several textual woodcuts and a folding map. Tempsky (1828-68), a Prussian adventurer and talented artist, was educated at the Berlin Military Academy and served many years in the army and later as a mercenary. His wife, Emilia Bell, was born in Greytown, Nicaragua. This work is an interesting account of Tempsky's journey in Mexico, Tehuantepec, and Central America, and his attempt to portray the inhabitants "in a life-like manner." The text begins with an 1853 sea voyage aboard the French brig Independance from San Francisco to Mazatlan, Mexico. The author had spent the three previous years in California (he has been described as John Sutter's personal bodyguard). Later, Tempsky immigrated to Australia and then went on to New Zealand, where he was killed in bush fighting against the Maoris. Octavo. The period full calf binding has been expertly rebacked in matching tan calf, with five raised bands and decorative gilt stamping. An ink inscription dated 1861 appears on a prefatory blank leaf. Some dust staining to the top edge. A few minor nicks and scuff to the leather; else very good.
