Darwin, Charles (Alfred Russel Wallace)
1858. Rare autograph note signed by Charles Darwin to fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. The note reads, "Oct. 27 Down, Beckenham Kent Can you tell me Mr. Fr. Geach's address? I want to send him my book." With the address in Darwin's had on the verso: "A.R. Wallace The Dell Grays Essex." The two leading figures in the development of the theory of evolution through natural selection, Darwin and Wallace's theories differed slightly. Darwin argued that competition between members of the same species led to adaptation, while Wallace asserted that environmental pressures led populations of various locations to diverge. In 1858, Darwin and Wallace published a joint publication: On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection,' the content of which Darwin would develop into his magnum opus, On the Origin of Species, published the following year. In near fine condition. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Darwin. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18.5 inches by 13.5 inches. An exceptional example linking two of the leading minds in the theory of evolution. One of the most important figures in human history, English naturalist, geologist and biologist Charles Darwin became internationally renowned for his contributions to the science of evolution. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and, in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

This children's book was one of various moral tales written for children and published by various abolition societies. These children-as-slaves stories were primarily written for Caucasian children in the hopes that they would mature with a sense of empathy for the African Americans among them; and that, in fact, these children weaned on the moral imperative of anti-slavery would accomplish what their parents could not. Samuel Kleinschmidt
The book is bound in a later 16mo standard library binding with marbled boards and a simple cloth spine, with some very light edge wear. The volume is thin with only 60 numbered pages. A label is pasted onto the front board with the title printed and the author written with a pencil. There is an ex-libris from a Catholic society pasted onto the front pastedown, accompanied by pencil text in Danish explaining the book in short. There is some more pencilled nonsense on the title page. Also someone has filled out a sentence in the book with a black marker. All pages cut. nunalerutit, imaipok: silap pissusianik inuinigdlo ilikarsautinguit (transl.: Book of Geography, for learning, regarding the nature and people of the world) (by Samuel Kleinschmidt) (At the New Herrnhut mission) Nungme (Nuuk, Greenland), 1858 This is one of the first printed books in Greenland - the first to be issued by the Herrnhut mission which would today have been located in the modern city of Nuuk. The author and printer was the missionary Samuel Kleinschmidt, who reformed the Greenlandic language into the basic form that is still used today. This book was meant to be a school textbook for pupils in Greenland, as all of it is in printed in Greenlandic. The very first book printed in Greenland is the "Book of Pok" which was issued in late 1857 by Heinrich Rink at the colony of Nuuk proper, which was back then located nearby. Heinrich had begun experimenting with prints since 1855 in primitive pamphlets. Not long after he had brought two new printing presses to Greenland and gave one of them to Samuel Klei … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ephemera.
may18. b/w printing on silk, 19 x 19 1/2 inches. The "Great Eastern" was an iron sail and steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by J. Scott Russell & Co. In 1858, at the time of her launching, she was the largest ship ever built. She made her first passage to America in 1859, a cruise that was marred by an explosion aboard. She had a checkered career thereafter. Having proved herself impossible to run profitably as a passenger liner, she was converted to a cable-laying ship and set down the first successful trans Atlantic cable. She ended her career as a floating music hall and advertisement for Lewis' department stores. The Great Eastern card measures approximately 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches and features images of the ship under weigh and a longitudinal section, with specifics given in some detail. It is lithographed on coated stock with color highlights by Meyer & Co. of New York, and copyrighted by Wagstaff & Bro., 1859, in the Southern District of New York. The card was undoubtedly meant to coincide with publicity drummed up the the "Great Eastern's" maiden voyage to New York. According to an article in Sea History by Charles Ira Sachs, this is thought to be the earliest steamship trade card. Silk and card, both in very good condition

Great old drafts of French sketches, acts for comedy vaudeville, broadsides and play bills done by Jean Michel Granger from 1858-70 for your collection. See item description and pics below. Theatre Comedy Vaudeville Jean Michel Granger Draft Scripts Playbills Broadsides Scrap Book Journal from 1858-70 Item Description Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a great collection of theatre vaudeville and comedy scripts, playbills, broadsides, journal, and scrap book pieces in a book of J M Granger for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself! Great old entertainment piece here. J M Granger appears to be the writer of these pieces. In this book the writings are scratched out or words added like being used for the draft of other pieces. The books covers plays from the 1858 to 1870 period. Granger seemed to be involved with the Theatre, based upon a second and third book that we have of his that will be offered separately in our store. What appears to be writing on pages in the book is too perfectly lined, so printed somehow. Any assistance in determining whom J M Granger was would be appreciated. A great mystery to solve here, eh?! Your identity would be kept anonymous. Thanks! The draft Theatre/Playbill/Scrapbook is 9.25" tall, by 6.5" across, by 1.25" wide. Probably about 125 pages, but not numbered, so a best guess. There is also a great leather cover over the book that someone hand tooled in the past. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don't be shy t … [Click Below for Full Description]
