Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Described

1858 - (EGYPT) (HOLY LAND) FRITH, Francis. Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Described. London: James S. Virtue, [1858-1859]. Two volumes. Folio (13 by 18 inches),original full burgundy morocco gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $22,000.First edition of Frith's masterful two-volume work, containing 76 vintage mounted albumen prints from wet-collodion negatives of Egyptian and Palestinian antiquities, preserving their integrity from "the corroding tooth of Time, and the ceaseless drifting of the remorseless sand." Prints fine, most signed and numbered by Frith in the negative, in handsome original morocco-gilt bindings.Frith's photographs of Egypt and the Holy Land, some of the earliest and most sought-after images of the Near East, established his reputation as one of the most important photographers of the 19th century. "One of the most renowned of 19th-century photobooks," Frith's prints in Egypt and Palestine are "justly famous". as much for their technical as for their artistic achievement" (Parr & Badger I:28). "The books of Francis Frith inaugurated the first golden age of albumen-silver photographic illustration (1860-80)". One of the most outspoken on the esthetics of photography, Frith was among the first photographers to successfully seize the opportunity of using the recently perfected glass-negative and albumen print process to establish a reputation as a master photographic book illustrator". During September, 1856 to July, 1857, he journeyed to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, where he made full-plate and stereo negatives. Upon his return [to England] they were published under the title Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Described (1858-59), in which every photograph was faced with a page or more of descriptive text". He writes in a chatty, discursive manner, often including remarks about how he made a picture, while discussing the history of a particular monument". the photographs communicate special information ranging from the graffiti on the stones to the amorphous piles of rubble that have, by comparison, a crystalline clarity and definition" (Truthful Lens, 30-31). The crisp quality of Frith's images is remarkable since he was forced to develop his wet-plate negatives in caves, tombs and temples to escape the heat and strong light of the desert. Subscribers List (II). Truthful Lens 61. Gift bookplate (I). Several embossed library stamps. Small shelf numbers to lower margins of contents pages.Prints exceptionally fine, lightest scattered foxing to text and mounts, slight rubbing, mild toning to boards. Volume I text block and inner hinges expertly repaired. A splendid about-fine copy, rare in this condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("J. Strauss"). Paris, 130 rue Montmartre, 1. XI. 1858.

1858. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo. - Gering braunfleckig.

        Autograph Musical Quotation

1858. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. AMQS from the influential German conductor and composer whose vast musical output is today largely neglected. Hiller has neatly penned six measures for piano in E minor, marked "Allegro," inscribed the quotation to a Herrn. Ad. Nies, boldly signed, and dated Köln, November 14, 1858. Overall toning and one slight tear at the head, otherwise in fine condition. 11.75 x 8.25 inches (29.9 x 21.2 cm).Perhaps best remembered today as the dedicatee of Schumann's Piano Concerto and Chopin's Nocturnes, op. 15, Hiller was an extremely important figure in the musical world of nineteenth-century Germany. During his long career, he conducted the orchestras of Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Dresden, founded the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, composed six operas, three piano concertos, four symphonies, and a large body of chamber music, and taught pupils such as Max Bruch (whom he introduced to the melody of the Kol Nidrei, as he was Jewish). He was also an important lecturer and writer. His close musical associates included Mendelssohn, whom he met when they were both boys, Schumann, Schubert, Rossini, and Wagner, with whom he worked closely in Dresden.

Mr Stuart's Exploration in South Australia . . . Journal of an Expedition into the Unexplored Country to the North-West and South-West of Port Augusta

Government Printer, Melbourne 1858 - Foolscap folio, 9 pages plus a large folding map (600 x 510 mm: 'Country in South Australia Explored . . . June to September 1858'). Title-wrappers; front cover lightly creased with two small spots of foxing; short tear to the map near the stub expertly (and almost invisibly) repaired; essentially a fine copy in modern half calf and cloth. Victorian Parliamentary Paper Number 119 of 1858 (a reprint of South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 119 of 1858); there has been no subsequent edition. This is an account of Stuart's first independent expedition; he had previously travelled with Sturt's 1844-45 expedition into Central Australia. The party of three 'started out from the Northern Flinders Ranges in mid-May. They skirted the south end of Lake Torrens and then turned north and north-west until they reached the present site of Coober Pedy. They then followed a southerly course to Lake Gairdner, passing it on the west side. After a strenuous march, they arrived at Ceduna . . . By now the men had run out of provisions. They travelled along the coast to Streaky Bay and from there to the settled districts at Mount Arden in a state of semi-starvation' (Feeken, Feeken and Spate, 1970). From the collection of Dr John Chapman, with his bookplate. Please use the 'Ask Bookseller a Question' link below to confirm availability and postage charges. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

He is patron of the fifth chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.*** Blake I, 413-5.

Colas 1768. Vicaire V, 230.
