Goto oku no hosomichi [trans.: The Narrow Road of Oku]

Eleven double-page & three single-page finely color-printed woodcuts. 29; 26 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. orange wrappers, title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Osaka: 1858. A picture scroll created in 1770 by Yosa Buson, the great Nanga painter and haiku poet, entitled "Oku no hosomichi emaki" (today an "important cultural object" at Kyoto National Museum) was based on a travel journal - entitled "The Narrow Road to the Interior" - kept by Matsuo Basho, written in the late 17th century. Basho's diary is considered one of the major texts of classical Japanese literature. This picture scroll is part of the genre called "haiga" (sketches used to illustrate the themes of haiku and haikai) and a number of books in this style followed by well-known artists in the "Narrow Road" tradition. The present work is one of the rarest in the genre (WorldCat locates only the 1983 reprint). It is illustrated by eleven double-page and three single-page illustrations, all delicately color-printed, of Matuso Basho and his travelling companion Kawai Sora. The woodblock calligraphy throughout is of the highest quality. In fine and fresh condition with excellent coloring. The first two leaves of Vol. I slightly soiled.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("J. Strauss"). Paris, 130 rue Montmartre, 1. XI. 1858.

1858. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo. - Gering braunfleckig.

        Autograph Musical Quotation

1858. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. AMQS from the influential German conductor and composer whose vast musical output is today largely neglected. Hiller has neatly penned six measures for piano in E minor, marked "Allegro," inscribed the quotation to a Herrn. Ad. Nies, boldly signed, and dated Köln, November 14, 1858. Overall toning and one slight tear at the head, otherwise in fine condition. 11.75 x 8.25 inches (29.9 x 21.2 cm).Perhaps best remembered today as the dedicatee of Schumann's Piano Concerto and Chopin's Nocturnes, op. 15, Hiller was an extremely important figure in the musical world of nineteenth-century Germany. During his long career, he conducted the orchestras of Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Dresden, founded the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, composed six operas, three piano concertos, four symphonies, and a large body of chamber music, and taught pupils such as Max Bruch (whom he introduced to the melody of the Kol Nidrei, as he was Jewish). He was also an important lecturer and writer. His close musical associates included Mendelssohn, whom he met when they were both boys, Schumann, Schubert, Rossini, and Wagner, with whom he worked closely in Dresden.

Mr Stuart's Exploration in South Australia . . . Journal of an Expedition into the Unexplored Country to the North-West and South-West of Port Augusta

Government Printer, Melbourne 1858 - Foolscap folio, 9 pages plus a large folding map (600 x 510 mm: 'Country in South Australia Explored . . . June to September 1858'). Title-wrappers; front cover lightly creased with two small spots of foxing; short tear to the map near the stub expertly (and almost invisibly) repaired; essentially a fine copy in modern half calf and cloth. Victorian Parliamentary Paper Number 119 of 1858 (a reprint of South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 119 of 1858); there has been no subsequent edition. This is an account of Stuart's first independent expedition; he had previously travelled with Sturt's 1844-45 expedition into Central Australia. The party of three 'started out from the Northern Flinders Ranges in mid-May. They skirted the south end of Lake Torrens and then turned north and north-west until they reached the present site of Coober Pedy. They then followed a southerly course to Lake Gairdner, passing it on the west side. After a strenuous march, they arrived at Ceduna . . . By now the men had run out of provisions. They travelled along the coast to Streaky Bay and from there to the settled districts at Mount Arden in a state of semi-starvation' (Feeken, Feeken and Spate, 1970). From the collection of Dr John Chapman, with his bookplate. Please use the 'Ask Bookseller a Question' link below to confirm availability and postage charges. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Light tanning and foxing, minor offsetting from plates, light dust soiling to edges of map. About very good. The most important work of this notable German artist and topographer, who accompanied several of the leading western surveys of the 1850s. This book describes his experiences with the Pacific Railroad survey under Lieut. Amiel Whipple, investigating a potential route along the 35th parallel in 1853, which took the party across northern New Mexico and Arizona. The work is notable for its plates of the Pueblo Indians and Möllhausen's account of them. ".In addition to the account in journal form of his experiences as topographer of Whipple's surveying expedition in 1853, there is an account of his experiences in the West in 1851 on a trip from St. Louis to Laramie with Prince Paul of Wurttemberg" - Streeter. Möllhausen's career and the chronology of these expeditions are described in detail by Taft. The TAGEBUCH. is extremely scarce in the marketplace. HOWES M713, "b." ABBEY 661 (ref). WAGNER-CAMP 305:1.

Colas 1768. Vicaire V, 230.
