FLORAL WORLD AND GARDEN GUIDE

1858. [MAGAZINE]. A FLORAL WORLD AND GARDEN GUIDE. London: Groombridge and Sons, 1858-1876. 19 volumes. Each volume collects a year's periodical issues; and each is illustrated throughout with wood-engraved text illustrations. Most volumes include some plates. Later years, from 1869 to 1876, include a dozen full color plates in each volume. The 19 volumes offered here contain a total of 117 plates, of which 106 are color. The first six volumes are bound in publisher's decorated brown cloth and the remaining volumes in publisher's decorated dark green cloth. There is occasional spotting throughout the text and to the odd plate. About three of the plates from the later volumes have a moderate crease. Some minor wear at heads and extremities of volumes, yet an appealing set. A run of this length is seldom seen.

ALBUM OF VIRGINIA; OR, ILLUSTRATION OF THE OLD DOMINION

Richmond [but actually Dresden & Berlin]: Edward Beyer [but printed by Rau & Son of Dresden and W. Loeillot of Berlin], 1858.. Lithograph titlepage (with five vignettes) plus forty tinted lithograph plates. Oblong folio. Original gilt cloth boards bound onto larger modern three-quarter morocco and cloth. Titlepage lightly soiled and edgeworn. A few plates with closed marginal tears, expertly repaired; titlepage and each plate backed by tissue. [with:] [Beyer, Edward]: DESCRIPTION OF THE ALBUM OF VIRGINIA: OR THE OLD DOMINION, ILLUSTRATED. VOL. I [all published]. Richmond: Enquirer Book and Job Printing Office, 1857. [79]pp. Original half calf and cloth boards, gilt title on front board. Text volume very clean internally. Overall a very good, handsome copy of a book very difficult to find in clean condition, here with the scarce accompanying text volume. Both volumes housed in folding cloth box. The Beyer album is one of the foremost American view books created in the 19th century. "This is a major outstanding item, the rarity of which is by no means fully appreciated" - Bennett. Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850s. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the titlepage asserts Richmond was the place of printing, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden and the letterpress in Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views include beautiful natural scenes, Harpers Ferry, White Sulphur Springs, railroad bridges and tunnels (e.g. Highbridge near Farmville), views in Weyer's Cave, and scenes at many of the fashionable resorts which were nestled amid the mountains of Southwest Virginia. "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places...Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state" - Deák. Deák praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion." It is one of the foremost works of American scenery. This copy of Beyer is notable for being accompanied by the small volume of explanatory text, separately published in Richmond in 1857. This volume is quite rare and almost never found with the album. HOWES B413, "b." SABIN 5125. BENNETT, p.10. DEÁK, PICTURING AMERICA 721.

Album of Virginia; or, illustration of the Old Dominion

Richmond, Virginia [but Dresden & Berlin, Germany]: Edward Beyer [but printed by Rau & Son of Dresden and W.Loeillot of Berlin], 1858. Oblong folio. (16 1/4 x 24 inches). Lithographed throughout. Tinted title with five vignettes, 40 tinted plates after Beyer by Rau & Son (18) or W.Loeillot (22). Original half morocco over cloth-covered boards, the lower cover blocked in blind with title panel and surrounding decorative border, the upper cover with the title panel in gilt, and the surrounding decorative border in blind, the flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt roll tools, modern red morocco-backed red cloth box, the spine with raised bands, lettered direct in the second compartment. One of the foremost works of American scenery from the golden age of lithography. "This is a major outstanding item, the rarity of which is by no means fully appreciated" (Bennett). Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850s. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the title notes that the copyright was registered by Beyer in the District of Virginia, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden or Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views (printed in black with, generally, two further colours) include beautiful natural scenes, Harper's Ferry, White Sulphur Springs, railroad bridges and tunnels (e.g Highbridge near Farmville), views in Weyer's Cave, and scenes at many of the fashionable spa resorts which nestled amid the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Deak writes of Beyer: "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places. Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state." Deak praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion." Bennett p.10; Deak Picturing America 721; Howes B413 ("b"); Sabin 5125.

        FREIGHT LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE. DON JUAN

[ca. 1850s].. A very fine drawing, pen and black ink over pencil. Image 25 1/2 x 41 inches, wide margins. Ink ruled border. Calligraphic title and mechanical specifications within upper image. Signed lower left: "Z. Colburn, Del." Uniform light age-toning with unobtrusive light scattered foxing. Excellent condition. Impressive carved hardwood frame and gilt liner, French mat. A large and visually impressive schematic drawing of the locomotive engine, Don Juan, stopped on a section of track, probably prepared to illustrate a private report for an American railroad company. This finely detailed drawing of the Don Juan is fully seven times the size, and more sharply delineated, than Colburn's well known railroad lithographs, executed in 1858 by Julius Bien and found in THE PERMANENT WAY AND COAL BURNING LOCOMOTIVES..., a comparative economic and technological analysis of British and European railway systems, with their American counterparts. The mechanical specifications of the powerful Don Juan are finely inked above its smokestacks: "DIAM of CYLINDER, 18 in. STROKE of PISTON, 20 in. DIAM. of DRIVERS, 42 in. WT. of ENGINES, 24 tons. WATER room in boiler, 96 cubic ft. STEAM do. 48 cubic ft. CAPACITY of do. 718 gallons. TUBE SURFACE, 928 sq. ft. FIRE BOX do. 60 sq. ft. AREA OF GRATE, 11-1/12 sq. ft." A rare and eminently displayable piece of 19th- century American railroadiana, this is the first Colburn drawing we have encountered, and a remarkable example of virtuosity in graphics. See Zerah Colburn & Alexander L. Holley, THE PERMANENT WAY AND COAL-BURNING LOCOMOTIVE BOILERS OF EUROPEAN RAILWAYS WITH A COMPARISON OF THE WORKING ECONOMY OF EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN LINES, AND THE PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH IMPROVEMENT MUST PROCEED (New York, 1858), passim. Illustrated with fifty- one engraved plates; the frontispiece, of the passenger engine, Canute, is very much in the style of the present drawing.

        Landskapsstudier.

Pärmarna klädda i mönsterpressad klot.

Wermland i teckningar efter naturen af A. Winqvist. Lithografierade af J. H. Strömer utgifne af Franz von Schéele.

First edition. Stockholm. Tr. hos A. J. Salmson. 1858-1867. Oblong folio.Lithographed title page + printed title page + (2) pp. (dedication) + 86 pp. + (2) pp. (index) + 40 lithographed plates. Gilt ornated blind stamped cloth binding. Gilt titlelt at front cover. Beautiful. A few scratches to the front board. Some wear to the spine. A few marginal stains to the plates. 4 plates with a few staines to the image area. A very well preserved and clean copy of an uncommon plate book.. The plates show views of the landscape and towns of the district of Wermland in the west of Sweden. The people of Wermland can be proud that such an ambitious work of their district was produced in the mid 19th. century. The noble man Franz von Scheele (1795-1863) made this possible. He spent his life promoting Wermland and this book was a part of the effort. He died before all the parts of the book were published. The plates were printed by the leading printer in the country at the time - Salmson. Before the book was finished he had to flee the country because of financial problems (just like Almquist a few years earlier). The printing was finished by Abraham Lundquist. At least three different lithographers executed the plates. Only Strömer is mentioned at the title. He lithographed 8 plates, Schöpel 12 and Nay 8. The remaining 12 are not signed. Scarce

French Lessons book bearing a 28 word quote about Cicero in James Garfield’s hand and the signature of his future wife Lucretia Rudolph. Envelope free franked, "J. A. Garfield / M. C." laid in to book

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below: Book “A New Method of Learning the French Language embracing both the Analytic and Synthetic Modes of Instruction being a Plain and Practical Way of Acquiring the Art of Reading, Speaking, and Composing French on the plan of Woodbury’s Method with German” by Louis Fasquelle. Twentieth Edition. Ivison & Phinney, 1854. Impressed ornate “I&P” design on covers; chipped spine, upper portion missing, with gilt lettering “Fasquelle’s / French Course / on the Plan of / Woodbury’s / Method with German.” Back hinge torn. Pages soiled, some foxing; portions of text block loose. Boards and spine professionally restored to good condition. Envelope addressed in manuscript, free franked, "J. A. Garfield / M. C." laid in. In a presentation folder with inside flaps, housed in a custom brown-cloth covered slipcase with “New Method / of Learning / the French / Language / Fasquelle” stamped in gilt on a black leather label at the top of the spine and, on lower portion, also in gilt, “James Garfield’s / Copy / 1854.” From JamesGarfield.org: “In 1849, Garfield’s mother persuaded him to enter Geauga Academy in Chester, Ohio, which was about ten miles from his home. During his vacations he learned and practiced carpentry and helped at harvest, he taught and did anything and everything to get money to pay for his schooling. After his first term, he needed no aid from home, he had reached the point were he was self-sufficient. While at Chester, he met a Miss Lucretia Rudolph, his future wife. He was attracted at first by her interest in the same intellectual pursuits, and he quickly discovered sympathy in other tastes and a congeniality of disposition, which paved the way for the one great love of his life … On November 11, 1858, James A. Garfield married Lucretia Rudolph, his fellow student at Geauga Academy.” On the first free flyleaf, James Garfield has written in pencil “Chapsal Noël.” The principal work of French grammarian Charles Pierre Chapsal (1787–1858) was “Nouvelle Grammaire Française” (1823) in which he collaborated with French humanist François Noël (1756-1841). Signed beneath this in light pencil: “Lucretia Rudolph. / Hiram.” On the inside back cover, Lucretia as written in pencil ten full names, possibly classmates or friends. Beneath Lucretia’s signature are six lines written in pencil by James A. Garfield: “It was no fault of Ciceros / that treason had eaten / into the hearts core of / the Commonwealth and / that men were now / willing to be Slaves.” The blank lower right corner of this page is missing. Affixed opposite this page, inside the front cover, is a 2.75” x 1.5” label imprinted “Inter Folia Fructus / Library of / James A. Garfield.” From “The Life of James A. Garfield” by Charles Carleton Coffin (Boston: James H. Earle, 1880): “He had been three years at Chester, two at Hiram … He pushed the plane and worked as carpenter, shingled houses, — doing anything in that line that he could turn his hand to. Many of the houses in the village of Hiram were covered with boards, which were planed and nailed upon the joists by this student, with a great purpose in view. When he was making the shavings fly in the early morning before breakfast, he was going over his lessons for the day. When making the welkin ring with his pounding, he was at the same time hammering away at Cicero or Sallust [Roman historian]…” Cicero’s “On the Commonwealth and On the Laws” was his ?rst attempt to adapt Greek theories of political life to the circumstances of the Roman Republic. James Garfield refers to Cicero and Commonwealth in his notation.

Paul Morphy verses Johann Jacob Loewenthal Stereoview

Light gray mount stereoview of Paul Morphy and john Jacob Lowenthal seated at the chess board probably before one of their matches in 1858 with a short biography of both players on the verso of the card.Löwenthal was born in Budapest, the son of a Jewish merchant. He was educated at the gymnasium of his native city. In 1846, he won a match against Carl Hamppe in Vienna (+5 -4 =0). He received a civil appointment under the administration of Lajos Kossuth in 1848. On the downfall of the latter, Löwenthal was expelled from Hungary, and he emigrated to America (1849). In 1851 he went to London, and thenceforward resided permanently in England. At the Manchester tourney of 1857 Löwenthal defeated Adolf Anderssen for first place. In his visit to New Orleans, Löwenthal played Paul Morphy on two separate occasions, losing a total of three games straight. He was one of the first masters to play a match against Morphy after the latter's arrival in London in 1858. Morphy won with a score of nine wins, three losses and two draws. "...I am convinced that I was vanquished by superior strength," Löwenthal said about the match, as reported by the Englishman Frederick Edge. No doubt aware that chess was Löwenthal's only source of livelihood, and conscious to not be considered a professional player himself, Morphy after winning the match stakes of £100, presented Löwenthal with a gift of furniture valued at £120 for his new house. Just days after being defeated by Morphy, Löwenthal had his greatest success by winning the British Chess Association Congress knockout tournament in Birmingham, England on 27 August 1858. His prize was £63. In 1860 Löwenthal took advantage of Morphy's extreme popularity to create a collection of the American master's games titled Morphy's Games of Chess. According to Morphy's biographer David Lawson, Morphy was friendly to Löwenthal and therefore agreed to sign his name to material in the book, that was purported to be written by Morphy but in fact was not. For a time, Löwenthal served as club secretary of the St. George's Chess Club in London. He taught chess, and invented the first demonstration board. He helped organize an international tournament in 1862, and then published a tournament book.Condition:Overall bright and clear with soiling to the mount and wear at the corners and at the lower left face of the corner by the blindstamp.

Complete set of her novels in first edition

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons / Smith, Elder and Co.,, 1858-85. 30 volumes, octavo (190 mm × 123 mm). Near-contemporary dark blue half morocco, titles and decoration to spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. Light toning to fore-edge and the occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. All first editions. All half-titles present with the exception of Romola. Includes her seven novels, poetry, essays and other literary works, as well as the three volumes of her life written by her husband John Cross. Eliot's novels were popular for their political views and depiction of rural society for which she drew on her own early experience. However Eliot did not confine herself to her bucolic roots. Romola is a historical romance set in late 15th century Florence and The Spanish Gypsy, a poem she wrote after a visit to Spain in 1867, both reflecting her wider reading and interests. Whilst Eliot's verse was not so well received, the popularity of her novels has endured. Middlemarch is still considered one of the greatest English novels and has been described by Virginia Woolf as "the magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.

REID'S TRAMP; OR, A JOURNAL OF THE INCIDENTS OF TEN MONTHS TRAVEL THROUGH TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, ARIZONA, SONORA, AND CALIFORNIA. INCLUDING TOPOGRAPHY, CLIMATE, SOIL, MINERALS, METALS, AND INHABITANTS; WITH A NOTICE OF THE GREAT INTER-OCEANIC RAIL ROAD

Selma, Al.: John Hardy & Co., 1858.. 237pp. Original blindstamped cloth, spine gilt. Spine bit faded and shaken, rear inner hinge cracked and separated. Front free endpaper and fly leaf excised; bookplate on front pastedown. Occasional fox mark. Still, very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. One of the great classic rarities of Southwest Americana, this is Reid's account of the journey to explore the Gadsden Purchase and his overland journey to California by the southern route. He left Marion, Alabama in September 1856 with a party of travellers known as the Mesilla Valley Company, whose main purpose was to explore the newly acquired territory in the Southwest known as the Gadsden Purchase. The group travelled through Mobile and New Orleans, then by ship to Galveston, then on land to San Antonio, Castroville, El Paso, Tucson, San Diego, and San Francisco. In the beginning of 1857, Reid joined a failed filibustering expedition into Sonora and Chihuahua led by Henry Crabb, but left for California by April of that year. He stayed only a short time in California before returning via Panama, Havana, and New Orleans. The book contains a wealth of brief and entertaining descriptions of life in the Mexican cession, including the towns and hamlets visited along the way, German immigrants, the agricultural promise of the region, desert flora and fauna, and speculation on the future of the Indians of the Southwest. The description of Reid's association with Crabb's filibusters is most interesting. "Reid's work is one of the genuine classics relating to the Southwest; his descriptions of mines and miners, the natives, in fact all the country through which he passed, are vivid" - Decker. A most important Southwest rarity, accorded a "d" rating by Howes. HOWES R172, "d." WAGNER-CAMP 307. STREETER SALE 176. RADER 2776. RAINES, p.172. CLARK III:490. COWAN, p.528. GRAFF 3450. The Coral Island. A Tale of the Pacific Ocean

      T. Nelson & Sons London: T. Nelson & Sons, 1858. First edition, second issue. Expertly recased with new endpapers, bookplate on front pastedown, some slight rubbing of covers and spine, occasional foxing, a very good copy. Octavo. With eight colour plates by the author original blue cloth, decoratively stamped in blind and pictorially stamped in gilt on cover and spine, lettered in gilt on spine, in custom blue cloth and lined in felt clamshell case The Coral Island is the story of Ralph, Jack and Peterkin, three young English boys who are shipwrecked on a deserted island in the Pacific. In a Robinson Crusoe way, these three young men manage to create an idyllic society. They build they own house, make fire, gather fruits, build a boat to explore the neighbouring islands ... After many varying and formative experiences, they are eventually rescued by an English missionary. When they return to civilization, they are wiser and more mature, for their adventures were coming of age experiences. R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of a newspaper editor and nephew of the Ballantyne brothers, was born in Edinburgh. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy (1835-37) and privately. Bad financial investments caused the family's ruin and Ballantyne's life changed thoroughly. Between the ages of 16 and 22 he was employed in Canada by the Hudson Bay Company, trading with local Indians in remote areas. In 1847 he returned to Scotland. He was a clerk at the North British Railway Company in Edinburgh for two years, and worked then for the paper-makers Alexander Cowan and Company. From 1849 to 1855 he was junior partner of Thomas Constable and Company, a printing house. In 1848 appeared Ballantyne's Hudsons Bay, or, The Life in the Wilds of North America. The autobiographical work depicted his youth and adventures in Canada. From 1856 he devoted himself entirely to free-lance writing and giving lectures. Ballantyne's first stories depicted the life in Canada, later works dealt with adventures in Britain, Africa, and elsewhere. The Coral Island which Robert Louis Stevenson acknowledged as the formative influence of his own love of the South Seas has not been out of print since it first appeared. Annoyed by a mistake he made in The Coral Island, Ballantyne travelled widely to gain first-hand knowledge and to research the backgrounds of his stories. He spent three weeks on Bell Rock to write The Lighthouse (1865), and was for a short time a London fireman (Fighting the Flames, 1867), for Deep Down (1868) he lived with the tinminers of St. Just for over three months. Experiences as a fireman on board the tender of the London-to Edinburgh express and weeks on the Gull Lightship also gave material for his subsequent novels. Ballantyne was especially careful with the details of local flora and fauna, giving his dramatic adventures, capture and escape, shipwrecks and other colorful events and believable settings. During his career Ballantyne wrote over 80 books. In 1866 he married Jane Dickson Grant; they had four sons and two daughters. Ballantyne died in Rome, Italy, on February 8, 1894 [Lilly List II. Lewis, Books of the Sea, pp. 19824. Sadlier, XIX Century Fiction, #103].
