Original pictorial boards (spine half cloth). With 100 views and illustrations on 50 full-page lithographed plates, including the fine frontispiece, by Madou and Lauters after the author (margins browned, not affecting the image). 96 pp.* First published in Bruxelles in 1839 with the title: Voyage a Surinam. - Benoit was born in 1782 in Antwerp and died in Brussels in 1854. His stay in Surinam was a private enterprise, probably in 1831. Judging from the many journeys he made into the interior and the time he spent among the Indians and Bush negroes and in the town of Paramaribo, he must have stayed in Surinam for many months. He does not refrain from pointing out the many difficulties, dangers and privations he managed to overcome during that period. Benoit belonged to the opponents of the abolition of slavery. He cannot avoid picturing the harsh and cruel daily existence of the slaves and explaining why they run away, revolt against their masters and are filled with hatred towards the whites. When describing their dance-festivals, he says that the need to find an outlet for their misery accounts for the frenzy with which they throw themselves into it. He produced a large number of charming and meticulous drawings during his stay. This very attractive set of views of Surinam include fine scenes of native life, showing costumes, dwellings, ceremonies, festivals, recreations, interiors, utensils, etc. of the negro- and Indian population and the Dutch planters. There are also several views of Paramaribo, plantation houses, a slave auction, and public buildings in Surinam. A remarkable collection of handsome lithographed views depicting plantation life in Surinam. Suriname-Catalogus UB Amsterdam 0579; See Introduction of the reprint edition by Silvia W. de Groot; Cf. With 5 engraved title-pages, 14 maps and plates (mostly folding) and 45 portraits (foxed as usual).* Second and best edition. - 'The most authentic history of the Dutch marine, founded entirely on documents of the Royal Archives. It is the more important as many of these documents were consumed, after the publication of the work, in the great fire of 1853, which destroyed a part of the Archives. Its value for the American collector needs not to be specified, as it contains very ample material for the history of the West-India-Company, the early expeditions to America, the wars with the Spaniards and Portuguese there, and the transmarine colonies. Many of the fine portraits are taken from old pictures, drawings, and very rare plates, not known before' (Muller, America, p.87).Cat. NHSM I, p.353; Sabin 36635.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Blankenese, 2. VII. 1906. Gr.-4°. 1 1/2 Seiten. Gedruckter Briefkopf.

. . - Gelocht. 2 geringe Fehlstellen durch Tintenfraß.

Grand Extra Fashionable Night, on Wednesday Oct. 13th, 1858 - Establishment of a Poor Box at the Town Hall

Margate: Denne (Printer), 1858. Margate: Denne (Printer), 1858. Theatre broadside, printed on silk, approx. 240mm x 750mm in size. Some wear to edges, slightly stained to reverse, but generally quite bright and clean. Attractive 'charity' theatre night, organised by Richard Thorne (and seemingly starring several members of his family), for the establishment of a Poor Box in Margate, he notes that the "rising importance of Margate (now a Corporate Borough) demands an advance of its interests, and I think if this object be effectively carried out, it will be a step in the right direction ... there cannot be a more gratifying or convincing proof of the admirable working of the system, or the estimation in which it is held by the Public, than the almost daily advertisement of liberal sums having been forwarded from noble or charitable persons. A Poor Box will give the Justices the opportunity of relieving necessitous cases, and if the Public will respond to this appeal, Margate will have the honour of taking the lead amongst County Boroughs in establishing so desirable an Institution". Army commission signed in the original by Queen Victoria, at the Court of Saint James's, together with original framed portrait of Lieutenant Daubuz of the Royal Engineers Corps, to whom the certificate is issued.         Die Zeichnungsübung, um 1864

Melbourne: John P. Brown, 1858.. Melbourne:: John P. Brown,. 1858.. Very good condition. A single cover sheet together with a four page news letter, the cover decorated with large engraving titled "Gold Diggers' Puddling Machine", showing gold diggers working with two of the horse drawn machines. Text below explains the process of gold washing, or puddling: "Our sketch illustrates the Gold-washing process, commonly known as Puddling. The machine, if such a simple arrangement can be so called, consists of a large circular, or rather annular trough, in which are two or more heavily loaded harrows. These are dragged round by a beam to which a horse is harnessed. The washing stuff is thrown into the trough, and then worked up with water into a state of coarse pulp. It is then removed to the long tom or other apparatus to be washed, by being thoroughly agitated with water until the clay has been washed away, and the gold left with the other heavy substances at the bottom. The deposit is then removed for final washing." Number XXII April 1858. On cream color tissue paper, 8 1/4 x 10 1/2". & & [With] Four page news letter, with the following note under the section pertaining to Western Australia: "From this dull colony we have no news except the arrival of a bishop and a schoolmaster, and the discovery (?) of gold". This refers the founder of the Hale School, the first bishop of Western Australia, Mathew Blagden Hale (1811 - 1895), who founded his Collegiate School in June 1858. Hale was founded on the model of the Collegiate School of St. Peter in Adelaide; it was known as the 'Bishop's School' and struggled, according to Hale because "[T]here is no such thing as convincing people that education pays. Making their sons messengers on a sheep station pays, and that settles the question". (A. De Q. Robin, Australian Dictionary of Biography). Today, Hale School is the oldest private boys' school in Western Australia, while sheep stations have to deal with the competition with synthetic fabrics.         Two autograph letters signed 'Tho. Hamilton'

New York 1858 - Two leaves, variously sized, on "Office of the American Abolition Society" and "Office of Anglo-African (in holograph)" letterhead; April 24, 1858, June 23, 1860; approximately 300 words; folded, unpublished --- Foreseeing that "our cause demands our own advocacy," black publisher and community leader Thomas Hamilton (1823-1865) founded the "Anglo-African Magazine" in January 1859. Monthly contributors included Martin Robison Delany, Frederick Douglass, William Cooper Nell, and James McCune Smit. When first introducing the short-lived periodical, Hamilton vowed: "Man must be free! If not through Law, why then above Law." Nine months before the first issue of "The Anglo-African Magazine" appeared, Thomas Hamilton commenced negotiations to purchase a schoolhouse for black children in Jamaica, Long Island. In April 1858, he requested that a colleague contact the chairman of the board of education and several trustees to "get a fair offer." A local carpenter was contracted to estimate renovations. Arrangements moved forward slowly. Not until June 1860 (three months after the magazine was discontinued) could Hamilton report any progress, telling his colleague that "I am beginning to see daylight (although, perhaps you can't see it) and I think in the course of a week or two, you and I will be able to bask in the sunshine. To this I think I hear you say, Amen!" Two years before Hamilton's death, lack of funds had forced educators to abandon the proposed Jamaica school.

        Am Strande bei Amalfi
