Edo, Japan: Tsuta-ya Kichizo, 1858. Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fuji Sanju-Rokkei) is the title of two series of woodblock prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Ando Hiroshige, depicting Mount Fuji in differing seasons and weather conditions from a variety of different places and distances. The 1852 series are in landscape orientation; the 1858 series are in portrait orientation. The print being offered is from the 1858 series, apparently number 10 in the series. Artist: Hiroshige, 1797-1858. Title: Toto meguro yuhigaoka. Twilight Hill at Meguro in the Eastern Capital. Series: Fuji sanjurokkei (Thirty-six Views of Fuji). Medium: Ukiyo-e. Woodblock Print. Date seal: nengetsu 1858 horse, month 4. From the last year of the master's life. This is believed to be an early pull of an early {?} edition, and not a later reprint or a reproduction. Later printings tend to lack the date seal. Size (HxW):14.25" x 9.75" oban tate-e. Signature: Hiroshige. Publisher's mark of Tsuta-ya Kichizo. Condition: Very good impression, almost no soiling, colors very little faded, almost no creasing, a paper strip and thin paper to right edge, partially attached to thin backing paper, margins mostly intact. Superb color choices. Light ochre grounds, with medium blue stream, trees with autumn reddish-brown leaves plus green evergreen needles, blue-gray hills with purple-tinged skyline above and blue-tinged sky at the top. A notably serene image, with a few leaves floating down from the two red maple trees and farmers returning from the fields to their village in Meguro. Meguro-ku is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, the former Edo.. Signed by Illustrator. Presumed First Edition. Very Good. Illus. by Hiroshige. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

        Lettre autographe signee.

Hauteville House [a Guernesey], "7 juillet" [probablement 1858].. 1 p. in-8..

Berlin: A. Hirschwald, 1858

      - FIRST EDITION of Virchow's seminal and profusely illustrated Die Cellularpathologie, "one of the most important books in the history of medicine, and the foundation stone in cellular pathology" (Garrison-Morton 2299). "He set in motion the now familiar idea that the body may be regarded 'as a state in which every cell is a citizen.' Disease is a civil war, a 'conflict of citizens brought about by the action of external forces' (Singer: History of Biology). "Virchow was the first to state the now universally accepted axiom 'Omnis cellula a cellula,' 'Where a cell originates it must have been preceded by another cell, just as animals are produced only by other animals and plants by other plants' (Printing and the Mind of Man, 307). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: A. Hirschwald. 8vo (8.75 x 5.5 inches; 219 x 138mm). [xvi], 440 pp., [4]. Atlas Geografico, Estadistico e Historico de la Republica Mexicana

Mexico Imprenta de Jose Mariano de Lara 1858 - The First Great Scientific Atlas of All of Mexico GARCIA Y CUBAS, Antonio. Atlas Geografico, Estadistico e Historico de la Republica Mexicana. Mexico: Imprenta de Jose Mariano de Lara, 1858. First edition of the first atlas of Mexico written by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Folio (21 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches; 553 x 370 mm.). 18, [2], [4], [2] pp. plus all thirthy-three double-page hand-colored ltihoragph maps and plates (one of the double-page spreads is comprised of two of the maps listed). Contemporary quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with gilt lettering and devices. Small and old paper label on upper front cover. Small stamp on upper blank margin of title page (not offensive). Sinaloa plate browned. Some minor foxing but over all a wonderful copy of the first great scientific atlas of all of Mexico. This early lithographed atlas of Mexico includes the work of Mexican pioneer lithographers Iriarte, Decaen, and Salazar. The illustrations are signed "Muñ ozguren" and come from the lithographic shop of Iriarte & Cia., while the letterpress typography is by Lara. The atlas was created during the Golden Age of Mexican lithography (see Mathes, Mexico on Stone, pp. 17-32). The design and execution of the atlas are handsome, with the middle of each double-page spread being occupied by the map of a specific state or territory, surrounded by statistical and historical information about the region, including subjects of borderlands interest, such as Native American tribes and incursions. The large and fine general map of Mexico by Salazar is one of the finest maps of Mexico created in the nineteenth century, with a spirited Mexican eagle atop cactus at top center, and especially beautiful lithographed views on either side (Popocatepetl, Orizava, Cascada de Regla, Palenque, Mitla, Uxmal, etc.). The maps of the states that border with the United States are especially interesting for clearly delineating the changing boundaries over time. For instance, the map of Sonora shows the demarcation of the Treaty of Mesilla in 1853 (Gadsden Purchase). The map of Chihuahua shows the boundary line before and after the Gadsden Purchase. The Tamaulipas map shows the new boundary at the Rio Grande, as well as the older line of demarcation at the Nueces. The plates from Mapa Sigüenza and Códice Boturini are accompanied by the notes of José Fernando Ramírez of the Museo Nacional. Palau 98721. Phillips, Atlases, 2683. Sabin 26554. Der Zauberer von Rom. Roman in neun Büchern. 9 in 5 Bdn.

Leipzig, F. A. Brockhaus, 1858 - 1861.. Zus. Auflage, Leipzig, Brockhaus, 1911.

Bunken Edo oezu. Kan.Tokyo, Subaraya Mohe, [Ansei 5 (1858)?]. 166 x 189 cm. Accordian folded (horizontally and vertically) between two contemporary paperboards with covered with blue paper, each embossed with 5 large decorations, woodcut title-label on front board (board size 32 x 21 cm). (dated "[1858]"); WorldCat (3 copies, dated "[1865]" and possibly a 4th, dated "(1864)". A large and very detailed woodcut map of Edo (since 1868 Tokyo) and surrounding areas by Mori Fusai, coloured by hand in blue, red, green and yellow. It covers an area to about 4 kilometes from the centre, including the coast of the harbour, and follows in the tradition of Kanamaru Hikogoro, who produced maps of Edo with a similar lay-out beginning in 1778. The map is printed from woodblocks on 15 sheets of Japanese (mulberry bark?) paper (each about 56×38 cm) and assembled with 5 across and 3 down to form one large folding map at a scale of about 1:9000. As assembled it measures nearly two meters in each direction. We have found no printed date on the map, but the East Asian Library of the University of California at Berkeley has what appears to be an identical map and dates it Ansei 5 (1858). With some tears along the folds, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding shows only minor wear. A magnificent large Japanese map of Edo (Tokyo), a decade before the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Signed Pen and Ink Cartoon "Hybridisation", a commentary on polluting blood lines

. Very good condition. Original pen and ink signed cartoon by the French political cartoonist "Caran D'Ache", whose real name was Emmanuel Poire (1858 - 1909). Poire was a satirist who developed "stories without words", considered a precursor to comic strips. Caran D'Ache spoofs appear to be of French Colonial Empire building during the later part of the 19th century, a time when France cloaked its acquisitions in Africa as a moral mission to lift the world up "to French standards by bringing Christianity and French culture". In 1884 the leading exponent of colonialism, Jules Ferry declared; "The higher races have a right over the lower races, they have a duty to civilize the inferior races." Full citizenship rights - assimilation - were offered, although in reality "assimilation was always receding [and] the colonial populations treated like subjects not citizens."[Wikipedia].In this cartoon we see the results of mixing or hybridizing people of different social status and race, and of attempting to modify human and animal traits. The cartoon has four illustrations in two rows, starting at the upper left. The top row depicts three pairs of mismatched people: a young woman is fondled by an older man as she reads; a scruffy poor man drapes his arm around a man in suit and tie; and a prosperous black man drawn in racist manner is depicted smoking a cigar wraps his arm around a startled looking white man. In the bottom row is a single image in which an old nag with disheveled Pegasus-like wings runs behind the rider who runs with her on a tether, as a muscular man runs by with an angry eagle strapped to his back. 22 x 15 1/2". Drawn on tissue laid down on heavier stock, with small crescent missing at bottom edge and upper right corner, not affecting the illustration.Caran D'Ache's work appeared in Le Chronique Parisienne, Le Figaro, and Le Rire. In his later years he began a series of "Albums", booklets of cartoons devoted to current fads and social & political issues.

The Virginians a tale of the last century

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1858-, 1859. Two volumes, octavo, plates thoughout; original stab holes, a nice set in half morocco, marbled paper sides (different pattern on each volume). A fine set bound from the original parts. After Vanity Fair, this was Thackeray's most famous work, continuing the story of the Esmond family through the history of their American descendants, the Warringtons. The novel traces the lives of the brothers George and Harry, their upbringing in Virginia, their experiences in England, and their involvement in the American Revolution, on opposing sides. Its survey of the effects of the Revolution, and of antebellum slavery, as famously depicted in the caricature of 'Gumbo', indentured to Harry, means that it is regarded as a valuable primary source in American social history. When it was first published, Thackeray's mild portrait of George Washington outraged some Americans by not displaying enough epic patriotism.

MITLA: A Narrative of Incidents and Personal Adventures on a Journey in Mexico, Guatemala, and Salvador in the Years 1853 to 1855, with Observations on the Modes of Life in Those Countries

London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Edited by J.S. Bell. Five chromolithographs, including one folding, with several textual woodcuts and a folding map. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858. First edition. Tempsky (1828-68), a Prussian adventurer and talented artist, was educated at the Berlin Military Academy and served many years in the army and later as a mercenary. His wife, Emilia Bell, was born in Greytown, Nicaragua. This work is an interesting account of Tempsky's journey in Mexico, Tehuantepec, and Central America, and his attempt to portray the inhabitants "in a life-like manner." The text begins with an 1853 sea voyage aboard the French brig Independance from San Francisco to Mazatlan, Mexico. The author had spent the three previous years in California (he has been described as John Sutter's personal bodyguard). Later, Tempsky immigrated to Australia and then went on to New Zealand, where he was killed in bush fighting against the Maoris. Octavo. The period full calf binding has been expertly rebacked in matching tan calf, with five raised bands and decorative gilt stamping. An ink inscription dated 1861 appears on a prefatory blank leaf. Some dust staining to the top edge. A few minor nicks and scuff to the leather; else very good..

Mitla. A Narrative of Incidents and Personal Adventures on a Journey in Mexico, Guatemala, and Salvador in the Years 1853 to 1855

London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, , 1858. With Observations on the Modes of Life in those Countries. Edited by J.S. Bell. Octavo. Contemporary calf by Bickers & Son, red morocco label, low bands with dotted helical twist, compartments gilt, double fillet panel to the boards, small rosette corner-pieces, milled gilt edge-roll, marbled edges and endpapers, blind milling to the turn-ins, marbled endpapers and edges. Lightly rubbed, lightly browned, some foxing to the plates and offsetting from them, overall very good. First edition. Coming from a Prussian military family von Tempsky (1828–1868) was destined for the army, but on leaving cadet school in Berlin he served in his father's old regiment for just 9 months before heading out to the Mosquito Coast in search of adventure among the German colonists there. "The Mosquito Kingdom had been established with British support before the arrival of the Prussian colonists, and when it came under attack from Nicaraguan forces Tempsky saw action for the first time as an officer in the local militia" (The Encyclopedia of New Zealand). Hearing of the Gold Rush in California von Tempsky set out for San Francisco, arriving in July 1850. He signally failed to make his fortune and in July 1853, "Tempsky decided to return to Bluefields through Mexico, Guatemala and San Salvador … [experiencing] a number of exciting adventures on the 18 month journey. Tempsky kept a record of these events, which later formed the substance of his book, Mitla, published in London in 1858 and illustrated with his own watercolours". He later emigrated to Australia, drifting eventually to New Zealand where he died serving in the Maori War. Despite his brief time there, Tempsky established himself as "one of the most colourful characters of nineteenth century New Zealand". An attractive copy with a contemporary prize bookplate of Billericay Grammar School to the front pastedown.

To effect this still further, the Types were cast expressly in Pewter, which, from its Softness, yields an Impression resembling more the Productions of the early Printers than could be obtained from harder materials. Great care has been taken to make the Text an accurate Reproduction of the Original". (Preface). Fifteenth century books on health are very rare. This is a health maintenance manual focusing on how to keep men (not women) healthy, with occasional notes on ill - health. Both parts were published anonymously and The Governayle of Helthe has been variously attributed to John de Bordeaux and also to Bartholomaeus Montagnana, the younger, the Medecyne of Ye Stomacke has been attributed to John Lydgate. Caxton's edition was not reprinted until our edition of 1858 which is beautifully printed. William Blades the editor and publisher of our edition was deeply interested in Caxton and wrote the Life and Typography of William Caxton, England's First Printer, which was published in 1861 - 1863. Hochgebirgslandschaft mit Gehöft in Tirol.

Zu ihren Künstlerfreunden zählten u.a.

Möllhausen, a Prussian artist, who visited the United States three times in the 1850s, experiences which "gave Möllhausen the material and experiences he used to produce illustrations, diaries, and fiction for nearly fifty years. His works made him enormously popular with Germans of all ages and classes, and he has become known as 'the German Cooper.' After arriving in the United States in 1849 and working in the Midwest, in 1851 Möllhausen traveled through the Plains to Fort Laramie with Prince Paul of Württemberg. He returned to Germany in 1852 with a shipment of wild animals for the Berlin zoo and met Alexander von Humboldt. He soon became a favorite of the old explorer and, bearing a recommendation from Humboldt, returned to the United States, where he joined Lt. Amiel Weeks Whipple's Pacific Railroad survey of the Thirty-fifth parallel as 'topographer or draughtsman.' The party traveled from Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Pueblo de los Angeles in 1853-54. Möllhausen made several illustrations in the Texas Panhandle that appear in Whipple's report" (Doherty).
