GILLETTE'S MAP OF ONEIDA CO. NEW YORK FROM ACTUAL SURVEYS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF J.H. FRENCH.

Philadelphia: John H. Gillette, . 1858 - Wall map, 66 1/2 x 64 inches, in full period color. Expertly restored, backed with modern linen, trimmed in green cloth, on contemporary rollers. Chip at left end of upper roller. Evenly toned, some minor staining in upper portion. Very good. A handsome map of Oneida County, New York, famous in the 1820s and '30s as a hotbed of religious revivalism, and vitalized by the construction of the Erie Canal. The route of the Erie Canal is shown, as are several railroad lines. The major cities of the county are outlined in color, with Rome and several others tinted a light green. Utica is shown in a large inset map measuring 17 by 27 1/2 inches, giving much detail of the town and buildings, accompanied by an extensive business directory. Rome is also shown in an attractive inset map, with a business directory. More than thirty smaller insets show the towns of Knox Corners, Delta, Trenton Falls, Deerfield Corners, Remsen, Waterville, Durhamville, Vernon, Camden, New Hartford, and Clinton, among others. Seven engravings along the border show prominent homes and buildings in the region, including the Court House in Rome, Utica City Hall, and the residences of Stanton Park in Waterville and Gen. Lyman Curtiss in Camden. Silas N. Beers and Frederick W. Beers were cousins and well-known mapmakers. Along with the young D. Jackson Lake, they produced several important New York county maps. This map of Oneida County is the first project on which they collaborated, under the leadership of the eminent surveyor, J.H. French. Ristow hypothesizes that French used the Oneida project as a "training ground" for the three young talented mapmakers. Not in Rumsey nor in Phillips MAPS. Scarce and quite notable. RISTOW, pp.393- 94.

Lecons cliniques sur les maladies chroniques de l'appareil locomoteur professées à l'hopital des enfants malades pendant les années 1855, 1856, 1857. & Atlas.

      - Paris, J.-B. Baillière et Fils, 1858, 8°, VII, 531 pp; 1859, Folio, (4), 28 pp., 20 lith. Tafeln, in zwei Halbledereinbänden; minimal fleckiges Exemplar. First Edition of this "series of his lectures given at l'Hopital des Enfants Malades in the years 1855, 1856, and 1857 were published in 1858 with the title Lecons cliniques sur les maladies chroniques de I'appareil locomoteur. This was the first time that the subject of orthopedics had been equated with diseases of the locomotor system. Accompanying this volume of lectures was an atlas, which was unique and demonstrated the amount of material that he had available, as well as the care with which he took to study it. Bouvier was well aware of the difficulties that the displacement of the heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera produced in his patients." L.F. Peltier, Ortjopedics, A History and Iconography, p.207 - - Sauveur-Henri-Victor Bouvier (1799-1877) "was a hardworking and sincere physician who inherited an orthopaedic institute in Paris from one Milli, who had been a patient of Heine at Würzburg. His 1837 survey of bony deformities earned him a prize from the Academie des Sciences, and he wrote an encompassing account of the corset in history and a series of lectures on orthopaedic subjects which used the term 'locomotor apparatus' for the first time. He practised at the Hôpital des Enfants Malades in Paris and was noted for refusing to speak for two weeks before he was due to address a medical meeting, to spare his voice. He died tragically, after a winter's day in 1877, when, now almost blind, he fell into the icy water of the great basin in the Tuileries gardens. - Bouvier was an enthusiast of the orthopaedic bed that provided traction, often called extension, as introduced by Venel. For scoliosis, he gave his young female patients crutches so long that their feel hardly touched the ground and they had to swing themselves along, as Dieffenbach remarked, like kangaroos. This was in order to unstress the spine; and Delpech noted wrily that if one of these young women happened to break a crutch after months of such locomotion, they were quite unable to make their way indoors, so used were they to not standing on their own feet. - Bouvier distinguished between rachitic and postural curves, considering the latter an exaggeration of physiologic deviations. Club-foot accompanying spina bifida was, he thought, due to 'perversion' of muscular activity by a disturbance of nervous activity. It was Bouvier who, 20 years later, in 1836, followed up Delpech's first historic subcutaneous tenotomy of 1816 and reported it a complete and lasting success, describing the organization of a 'tendinous callus' within the tendon sheath. He himself practised the operation and proposed subcutaneous section of the plantar structures for the accompanying cavus. - Bouvier would not at first believe that Pravaz had succeeded in reducing a congenital dislocation of the hip by long-continued traction and abduction and never retracted his opposition, despite his own exertions in the field, for he was convinced that the constriction of the joint capsule, rather than shallowness of the socket or muscle contracture, made reposition anatomically impossible. However, he did suggest, in 1835, that late deformity might be corrected by subcutaneous subtrochanteric osteotomy and obtained good results which were copied elsewhere and adapted to older patients: - Orthopaedics was first accepted as an independent speciality in France around 1850, and it may be said that Bouvier was the first 'official' orthopaedist. Mitla. A Narrative of Incidents and Personal Adventures on a Journey in Mexico, Guatemala, and Salvador in the years 1853 to 1855 with Observations on the Modes of Life in those Countries

Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, London 1858 - Octavo, pp [xvi], 436, publisher's list; with 5 chromolithographs (one double-page) and 11 wood engravings, out of text, and a folding map showing his route, hand-colored in outline. Von Tempsky (1828 - 68) was of Prussian descent, but left Prussia at the age of 18 he came to the Mosquito Coast (coastal region of present-day Nicaragua) -- then controlled by the British -- to lead a life of adventure. He mined in the California gold-fields, unsuccessfully, and returned to Nicaragua to resume his life there. It is his long trip back through Mexico and Guatemala that he wrote about in his book Mitla (Zapotec ruins outside Oaxaca, Mexico), which is full of his adventures, great sense of elan and good eye for detail. (In the preface he apologizes for daring to write in the English language rather than German, but his English is quite up to the task.) He later went to Australia and New Zealand to mine gold and, it seems, to have more adventures. He was a skilled amateur artist, and it is his own water-color sketches that are the basis for the fine chromolithographs and other illustrations: the coloring is spectacular. Binding is the original crimson blind-stamped publsher's cloth, somewhat faded and stained. Text, map and images are unusually clean. Very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris: Gide, Editeur. 1858. First. First edition. Four volumes. Quarto. Contemporary quarter morocco and cloth. Joints of a couple of volumes a little stressed but holding, spine ends a bit worn, and slight foxing to the plates, mostly confined to the margins, a very good set. Born into a wealthy family of textile merchants, Gailhabaud (1810-1888) devoted his life to the study of architecture, art, and archeology, and spent eight years compiling this beautifully illustrated encyclopedia. He attempted to make his works both authoritative and accessible to laymen, but his enthusiasm got the better of him and by the 1860s he had lost much of his fortune attempting to publish a monumental history of art. He was compelled to sell his personal library to the City of Paris for a large sum and a lifetime curatorial position, but the library was destroyed in a 1871 fire. Although his legacy suffered considerably from this reversal in fortune, his works on medieval churches and cathedrals are still in print to this day. .

        Scenes from Clerical Life

Edinburgh and London - Wiliam Blackwood and Sons, 1858 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Two handsome volumes fully rebound in leather, blackover blue. A very smartFirst Edition copy of Eliot's hard-to-find first bookFirst Edition in book form of George Eliots first published work, three stories that had previously been serialized in Blackwoods Magazine. Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 22 December 1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist. She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological perspicacity. In 1858 Amos Barton, the first of the Scenes of Clerical Life, was published in Blackwood's Magazine and, along with the other Scenes, was well received. Scenes of Clerical Life was widely believed to have been written by a country parson or perhaps the wife of a parson. Her first complete novel, published in 1859, was Adam Bede and was an instant success, but it prompted an intense interest in who this new author might be. Speculation increased as to authorshipmarkedly, and there was even a pretender, one Joseph Liggins. In the end, the real George Eliot stepped forward: Marian Evans Lewes admitted she was the author. Throughout her career, Eliot wrote with a politically astute pen. From Adam Bede to The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, Eliot presented the cases of social outsiders and small-town persecution. No author since Jane Austen had been as socially conscious and as sharp in pointing out the hypocrisy of the country squires. Condition: The bindings aretight and firm with the boards and all internal pages securely attached. The extremities arevirtually unmarked. The internal pages aregenerally bright and clean with some faintbrown spots throughoutand the occasional handling mark. The overallcondition of these volumesis very good..

THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH AND OTHER POEMS

Ticknor and Fields, Boston 1858 - This is the first edition of THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH AND OTHER POEMS by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, published in 1858 by Ticknor and Fields, Boston, MA. The ads in the back of the book are dated October 1858 validating this as a first edition. The copy we are offering for sale today is in very good condition. THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH AND OTHER POEMS contains not only the title poem but also contains Birds of Passage, another famous poem by Longfellow. It has been reported that THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH sold 10,000 copies in one day in Britain. In 1884, Longfellow became the first non-British writer for whom a commemorative sculpted bust was placed in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey in London; he remains the only American poet represented with a bust. The original brown cloth blind-stamped boards on this book are in good condition with the worst wear at the extremities of the spine. The front and back panels are blind-stamped with a pretty decorative design and are still in very good shape. The spine and hinge are holding nicely. The pages within are also in good condition, with hardly any issues. There is a small tear on page 114 and the front pastedown and first free endpaper have the white remains of something that was, at one time, pasted on the first free endpaper and then removed. The name 'Mary Osgood' appears on the very top of the flyleaf in blue pen. Otherwise the pages are free of writing or other marks and have retained their crispness. This copy would make a great addition to any Longfellow fan’s collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[iv], xxiii-cccii pp. Octavo (6" x 9-1/4"). Original cloth, blind frames and corner fleurons to boards, gilt titles to spine. Rubbing to extremities with moderate wear, section of backstrip lacking along upper half of front joint. Residue from bookplates (or tipped in leaves) to pastedowns, later owner stamp to front endleaf, shelf label to foot of spine. Early markings and underlining in light pencil in a few places, interior otherwise clean. A solid copy. * Only edition. Complete in itself, this book was also published as the preface and the two chapters of Cobb's Inquiry Into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States of America (1858). The same plates were used for both publications; this is why the book is numbered with Roman numerals. This important book was the most comprehensive antebellum statement on the law of slavery and the only treatise on the subject by a southerner. (Cobb was a Georgian.) Friendly Hints to the Young Naval Lieutenant?

Longman, Brown, Green, Longman, & Roberts, London 1858 - Small octavo, 124 pp., all edges gilt; a very attractive copy in plum morocco embossed in blind, lettered in gilt to front board and with royal arms to rear board, spine banded and gilt. First edition in a lovely presentation binding. Liardet was a professional naval officer who served against America in the War of 1812. He had an active and heroic career during which he was nearly blinded, forcing his retirement in 1841. Appointed to Greenwich Hospital, Liardet went on to write three practical naval books, works which concentrated on the technical aspects of sailing and are something of a vade mecum for junior officers. Liardet's informal account of shipboard life presents a wonderful glimpse into Royal Navy vessels at mid-century. Perhaps a testament to its usefulness and readability, this is a scarce work; Worldcat shows only four libraries holding copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Sammlung von 32 Theaterzetteln.

Königsberg, 1857-1858. - 32 Bll. Ca. 340:420 mm. Gefaltet.
