The Governayle of Helthe: with the Medecyne of Ye Stomacke. With Introductory Remarks and Notes by William Blades

London, Blades, East & Blades, 1858.. Reprinted in 1858 from William Caxton's edition of 1490, and LIMITED TO 55 COPIES ONLY. 8vo, approximately 200 x 135 mm, 8 x 5¼ inches, frontispiece with tissue guard is a printed facsimile of the first page of Caxton's book, repeated within, the text consists of a complete reproduction of Caxton's print in gothic type and "an annotated reprint" in roman type, pages: viii, [1], 25, [1], [36], [40], followed by 8 pages of Glossary, plus the prospectus for his Treatise on the Typographical Works of William Caxton, bound in full publisher's black morocco, gilt border to covers, rebacked to match, no lettering or label, all edges red. Small neat repair to fore-edge of upper cover, edges of covers just slightly rubbed, tissue guard browned and with a small chip at fore-edge, new pastedowns, inner hinges and one inner joint at front strengthened with bookbinder's linen cloth, contents clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. "An effort has been made, by the use of Types very similar to those employed by Caxton, to give this reprint something of the Appearance of the Original. To effect this still further, the Types were cast expressly in Pewter, which, from its Softness, yields an Impression resembling more the Productions of the early Printers than could be obtained from harder materials. Great care has been taken to make the Text an accurate Reproduction of the Original". (Preface). Fifteenth century books on health are very rare. This is a health maintenance manual focusing on how to keep men (not women) healthy, with occasional notes on ill-health. Both parts were published anonymously and The Governayle of Helthe has been variously attributed to John de Bordeaux and also to Bartholomaeus Montagnana, the younger, the Medecyne of Ye Stomacke has been attributed to John Lydgate. Caxton's edition was not reprinted until our edition of 1858 which is beautifully printed. William Blades the editor and publisher of our edition was deeply interested in Caxton and wrote the Life and Typography of William Caxton, England's First Printer, which was published in 1861-1863.         Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women

By George Mac Donald, Author of “Within and Without.” London: Smith, Elder and Co., 65, Cornhill, 1858. (The right of Translation is reserved). Pp.[iv]+323+[i (blank)]; publisher’s inserted 16pp. catalogue at end, dated September, 1858, headed “Works in the Press”, and including this title as the seventh entry; olive green near horizontal straight grain morocco cloth, ruled and blocked blind on sides, ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt on spine; t.e. uncut, others rough-trimmed; end-papers coated dark cream; binder’s ticket of ‘Westleys / & Co / London’ (Ball, 103 C) on back paste-down. Almost invisibly re-cased without disturbing the front end-papers; back end-papers neatly strengthened at hinge with matching paper (visible only on the paste-down); cloth of spine a trifle faded and showing slight wear at extreme head and tail; faint damp-streak to cloth of front cover; one gathering slightly proud, but not loose; removable light pencilled notes on margins of one page; otherwise a very nice copy. The first issue, with the earliest advertisements, and the probable first issued state of the binding. Wolff, 4296d, records a presentation copy sent direct from the publisher in this binding, though he also records an anomalous copy in blue-green ripple-grain cloth differently blocked and lettered, but with the same catalogue, which may have been a binding trial. Locke, ‘Spectrum’, p.146, recording a copy similar to this; Sadleir, 1479, recording a copy with advertisements dated July 1859. Both note the extreme scarcity of this title in good, or even acceptable condition - the Locke copy having the joints repaired and being otherwise only ‘fairly good’. Gatherings Q and R are here signed also with a dagger, which may perhaps indicate substitutions, revisions having possibly been made during the course of printing. Macdonald’s best known book, which may have had influence both on ‘The Night Land’ and some of the writings of Lord Dunsany. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

        Historia de Belgrano [Two Volumes].

Libreria de la Victoria / Impr. de Mayo 1858-1859, Buenos Aires - 644 pp.; 553, 4 [ads] pp. Sm. 4to. Cloth. Historia de Belgrano was the expansion of an article that originally appeared in Galeria, and it subsequetly went through four editions, the last in 1887, each one much augmented. "Mitre gathered and studied the books of America history, he submitted them to critical testing, he classified them according to what precipiated from them, and tried to contrast the results of his personal reseach among unpublished sources with what was already published," (Romulo D. Carbia, Historia critica de la historiografia agentina, p. 166-7). "Despite the impressive bibliographical apparatus supporting his work, however, Mitre's Historia de Belgrano provoked an enduring polemic regarding his basic premise: that a history of Belgrano, a great man, and the enlightened minority in Buenos Aires could somehow be a history of Argentine independence," (Nicolas Shumway, The Invention of Argentina, p. 208). Sabin calls it "a masterly work." Palau 173451. Spain & Spanish America I, 459. Sabin 49758. Leclerc 1915. Conde Montero 25. Very good copies with restored wrappers; Vol. I has nick to first few leaves, last few leaves unopened (uncut); Vol. II has publisher's error with earlier extra title (dated 1858) bound upside-down before half-title and also inserted correctly at rear; binding near fine.         PAROISSIEN ROMAIN D'APR?S LES IMPRIM?S FRAN?AIS DU XVME SI?CLE

Paris: Gruel et Englemann, 1858. n. Hardcover. 162 x 95 mm (6 3/8 x 3 3/4"). 703, [1] pp. EXQUISITE TAN ELABORATELY INLAID MOSAIC MOROCCO BY CHAMBOLLE-DURU, GILDED BY MARIUS MICHEL (with both binders' names stamp-signed on the front doublure, along with the date "1868"), COVERS WITH gilt-rule and dogtooth borders enclosing A FIELD OF DIAPERED INLAYS, each comprised of an ogival centerpiece of gilt-tooled black morocco with a four-petaled flower of red morocco; raised bands, spine compartments similarly gilt and inlaid, black morocco label, SCARLET MOROCCO DOUBLURES framed by a decorative gilt roll with a distinctive bird motif, heraldic device at center, marbled flyleaves, all edges gilt. In a (lightly rubbed) black morocco-trimmed slipcase. With printer's device, wood-engraved title page, full-page section headings, an elaborately historiated and compartmented border to each page, 33 engraved plates, and A GRACEFUL ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF THE CRUCIFIXION ON VELLUM.Except for a hint of darkening to the spine, A MAGNIFICENT COPY, entirely clean and fresh internally, and in an absolutely sparkling binding. This is a splendid dated mosaic binding, a dazzling collaboration executed by three of the greatest 19th century French names in the field. A rough contemporary of, and certainly the equal in technique to, binders like Trautz, Marius-Michel père, Lortic, and Cuzin, the elder Chambolle served his apprenticeship under Hippolyte Duru, and later formed a partnership with him. Duncan & De Bartha says that this collaboration began "at some point" and suggests that the partnership was formed after Chambolle established a premises at 20 rue de Savoie in 1873, but the date of our binding seems to indicate that the two binders had worked together, at least for a period, before that time. Chambolle's son continued the business when his father retired in 1898, and although the firm "showed a cautious recognition of the . . . preoccupation with Art Nouveau," classical work was always the mainstay of the Chambolle bindery. (Duncan & De Bartha) In "Modern Bookbindings," Sarah Prideaux says of her contemporary, "Chambolle most worthily continues the traditions associated with the name of his father. As an interpreter of the past, he has a place apart and almost untouched by the main revolutionary movement that has penetrated nearly every atelier in Paris, and modified, if not overturned, its inherited traditions. To him are confided the classics of former times, which he clothes in the styles appropriate to them, keeping to a simplicity of ornamentation which reveals great taste and feeling for composition." Gilder Marius Michel the younger and his father were responsible for some of the most beautifully gilded French bindings produced between the 1850s (when Michel the elder was the chief doreur for Capé) and the early part of the 20th century. Our binding is a testament to the glory of Chambolle-Duru and a glimpse of the younger Marius Michel early in his career. While the binding is the story here, the illustrations--especially the original watercolor on vellum and the page frames done in the style of late 15th and early 16th century printed Books of Hours--are a pleasing feature worth acknowledging. For a discussion of the origins and early development of the mosaic binding, see item #52, above.

PAROISSIEN ROMAIN D'APRÈS LES IMPRIMÉS FRANÇAIS DU XVME SIÈCLE

With printer's device, wood-engraved title page, full-page section headings, an elaborately historiated and compartmented border to each page, 33 engraved plates, and A GRACEFUL ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF THE CRUCIFIXION ON VELLUM. Except for a hint of darkening to the spine, A MAGNIFICENT COPY, entirely clean and fresh internally, and in an absolutely sparkling binding.

Flußlandschaft mit einer Frau in einem Nachen.

        [Manuscripts]: 11 One Act Plays

A collection of 11 unpublished playscripts by Henry Dingley Coolidge (1858-1922). The scripts are all individually bradbound in wrappers and laid into a tan cloth chemise. All are near fine with some wear at the extremities and a bit of toning, in a near fine lightly rubbed chemise. Coolidge, a direct descendant of Mayflower pilgrim William White, served as clerk for the Massachusetts Senate for 33 years. His interest in literary pursuits was well known, and noted in a senate resolution upon his sudden death in 1922, but during his lifetime he published just two books: Manual for the Use of the General Court and Dead Reckoning: A Farce. The one-act playscripts offered here are unpublished and were preserved by Coolidge's son, whose name and address are written on a paper label on the front pastedown of the chemise along with a list of titles. Though most of the plays are straightforward dramas and comedies, several venture into the supernatural, such as: Mary, Be You a Witch?, based on the Salem witch trails; Haunted?, a story on spiritual possession that ends tragically; and The House of Fearsome Peril, about a homicidal hypnotist. An interesting collection of unpublished plays from the turn of the century. Further details available upon request. .

THREE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS RELATING TO A PROPOSED PORT FOR THE SOUTHERN COAST OF THE PROVINCE OF SANCTI SPIRITUS].

Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. 1856-1858. - 114pp. in three parts. Small quarto. Dbd. Light toning and foxing. Very good. Detailed reports on the proposed public works project concerning a port on the Zaza River for the province of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba. The Zaza River reaches the sea at the small town of Tunas de Zaza, presumably the location of the port under discussion. There is much detail on both the need for the port and proposals for construction. The engineer discusses the difficulties involved, such as flooding in the river delta, as well as the benefits to commerce, both foreign and domestic. There is also mention of the need for security forces to deter any insurrection on the part of slaves. The first two documents are addressed by Joaquin Casariego to the Governor, while the last is signed by Juan Marin and Juan Falces.

        Zur plastischen Chirurgie.

. Vjschr. prakt. Heilk., 15/4 . - Prag, K. Andre, 1858, 8°, pp.127-159, mit 33 feinen Abbildungen auf 2 doppelblattgr. Falttafeln.. ERSTE AUSGABE.

14 × 20,5 resp. 19 × 12,8 cm. (Bladet 28 × 21,5 cm.) Bladet något smutsat. Oinramad.
