[AWV 16]. La Muette de Portici. Autograph musical manuscript of the first six measures of the duet "Mieux vaut mourir," signed "D.F.E. Auber"

1 leaf (250 x 230 mm), verso blank. Notated in black ink on hand-ruled 18- stave music paper, lowest staff blank. With autograph signature ("D.F.E. Auber") at head, tempo "Allegro non troppo" above first measure and "No. 3" to upper right corner (originally "No. 2"— corrected, most probably by Auber). Untitled. Fair copy of the first six measures of duet no. 8, "Mieux vaut mourir," of Mazaniello [!Masaniello] and Pietro from act 2 of the opera. Provenance: The German composer and choral conductor Siegfried Ochs (1858-1929); Louis Koch (1862-1930), a jeweler in Frankfurt whose large collection of musical autographs, inherited by his daughter Marie (b. 1895) and son-in-law Rudolf Floersheim (1897-1962), remains legendary. In very good condition. . Not in Schneider. Kinsky, Manuskripte, Briefe, Dokumente von Scarlatti bis Stravinsky: Katalog der Musikautographensammlung Louis Koch (Stuttgart: Krais, 1953), p. 142. The complete autograph full score of the opera is at the Bibliothèque nationale, Paris. A grand opéra in five acts to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne, La Muette de Portici was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on February 29, 1828. The opera was Auber's greatest success, with the duet "Mieux vaut mourir" being particularly famous. "The history of grand opéra begins with La muette de Portici. The characteristics of the genre include a new degree of magnificence in the sets and sensationally dramatic technical stage effects, the culmination of each act in a large tableau and ingeniously staged crowd scenes. The opera provided new opportunities for the director, librettist, set designer and costume designer to work together, and they made a careful study of the historical background of the Neapolitan revolt. The climax of the final scene with the eruption of Vesuvius was a sensation, and its influence was felt in grand opéra from Meyerbeer and his contemporaries to WagnerÂ’s Götterdämmerung." Herbert Schneider in Grove Music Online. "An operatic subject of such liveliness had not existed before... Here was a 'grand opera,' a complete tragedy in five acts and all in music. No trace of stiffness, bathos, high-priestly dignity, and all that classical stuff was left; it was burning hot and ravishingly entertaining." Richard Wagner: Reminiscences of Auber (1871).

Autograph letter signed "H. Berlioz," possibly to Georges Hainl, conductor of the Paris Opéra

      - Berlioz was the leading French composer, conductor, and critic of his age. "In many senses the Romantic movement found its fullest embodiment in him, yet he had deep Classical roots and stood apart from many manifestations of that movement. His life presents the archetypal tragic struggle of new ideas for acceptance. and though there were many who perceived greatness in his music from the beginning, his genius only came to full recognition in the 20th century." Hugh Macdonald in Grove Music Online.Although Berlioz finished Les Troyens in 1858, it was not performed in its complete form until years after his death, in 1890. The première of Acts 3-5, which included several of the singers mentioned in this letter, occurred at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on November 4, 1863. The performance mentioned in this letter may have taken place in late 1864 or 1865. ("Violetta"--i.e. the French version of Verdi's La Traviata--enjoyed 102 performances at the Théatre Lyrique between October 27, 1864 and 1865.) The intended recipient of this letter was perhaps Georges Hainl (1807-1873), conductor of the Paris Opéra and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire from 1863 until 1872. 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated ca. late October 1864-1865. In black ink. In French (with translation). An important letter in which Berlioz includes information for the first playbill of a projected concert performance of excerpts from his grand opera, Les Troyens. He lists the names and addresses of the singers who are to appear: Mme. [Anne] Charton- Demeur, Mlle. [Palmyre] Wertheimber, Mr. [Jules] Montjauze, Mr. [Louise- Émile?] Wartel, Mr. Péront, Mr. Legrand, and Mlle. Estagel. He also mentions a Mr. [?Prosper] Bagier, likely the director of the Théâtre- Italien in Paris. Finally, he includes a number of special woodwind and percussion instruments that must be added to the orchestra. "Here are the addresses and a short agenda. You will find the last five artists at the Théâtre Lyrique on evenings when they play Violetta. [You] will include the names of the artists only later, in order not to upset Mr. Bagier."Slightly worn and stained; creased at folds.

Autograph letter signed in full to arts administrator Richard Sternfeld

      - "[Wolf] intensified the expressive vocabulary of the lied by means of extended tonality and post-Wagnerian declamation while retaining the defining elements of the song tradition he had inherited from Schubert and Schumann. Profoundly responsive to poetry, he incorporated detailed readings of his chosen poems in the compositional decisions he made about every aspect of song: harmonic nuances, tonal form, melodic design, vocal declamation, pianistic texture, the relationship of voice to piano, etc. Seeking an art ‘written with blood’, he went below the surface of poetry – even where his musical purposes were inevitably distinct from the poet's – in order to recreate it in music of remarkable intensity, written, as he once proclaimed, for epicures, not amateurs." Eric Sams and Susan Youens in Grove Music Online.Richard Sternfeld (1858-1924) was a prominent arts adminstrator in Berlin at the time. A board member of the Wagner-Verein, he organized several performances of Wolf's works. The Berlin concert Wolf was planning at the time finally took place on January 8, 1894—but not as a "popular" concert. Siegfried Ochs, director of the Philharmonischer Chor, conducted some of Wolf’s choral-orchestral works. Three pages of a bifolium. 8vo (175 x 110 mm.). Dated Döbling [now part of Vienna], November 4, 1892. In black ink. In German (with translation). Wolf asks Sternfeld (who is not named in the letter but may be identified by circumstantial evidence) about the "popular concerts" series in Berlin, which Sternfeld had suggested as a venue for showcasing Wolf's music. He doubts whether the setting of these concerts was suited to the purpose:"Would you please, most esteemed [Sir], be so kind as to reveal to me the character of the so-called popular concerts in Berlin? Are your popular concerts such at which [the audience] is eating, drinking, and smoking? Of course such concerts would prohibit the performance of vocal music, and when you proposed a popular concert to me, you intended to perform my instrumental works only. In such a case a popular concert would not serve me well because, as you know, my specialty is vocal music. However, should it be otherwise and should the said concerts also include vocal music then I would of course prefer such a popular concert to one at the Singakademie, if only to save money. It also would appear that these popular concerts are held in the hall of the Philharmonic, which should not be underestimated."Creased at horizontal fold; short split to lower portion of central fold.

CROY GEBETBUCH DRoLERIEN - Faksimile Luzern

Luzern, Faksimile Verlag.

[Observations on the Palestrina Mosaic]

Salviucci, Rome 1858 - Large Folio, measuring 56cm x 39cm (15.5 inches x 22 inches). Original printed wrappers. Text is in Italian. [6], 72, [2] pages, plus 7 engraved plates, 5 of which are double-page. Wrappers chipped at extremities, occasional foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Scarce valuable resource on Ptolemaic Egypt. A scarce account, rarely seen in original wrappers, Pieralisi's treatise is a noteworthy study of the late Hellenistic Nile Mosaic of Palestrina, which depicts Ptolemaic Egypt and dates to circa 100 B.C. The author, Don Sante Pieralisi, was a librarian of the Barberini Library in Rome with access to many early scholars' works. The mosaic's history and construction are described, followed by a presentation of some early and compelling theories of interpretation and dating, by such scholars as Barthelemy, Antonio Nibby, Carlo Fea, and Cassiano dal Pozzo (secretary to Francesco Barberini who was largely responsible for its restoration). Much history of ancient Egyptian life can be drawn from the mosaic scenes, including the Nile's yearly flooding, Nubian hunters, mythical or extinct creatures, Egyptian-Roman trade, contrasts between peasant dwellings and palatial life, the rise of magnificent walled cities guarded by Egyptian soldiers, etc. Remarkable engravings reproduce details of the historic masterpiece. The celebrated Nile mosaic dates to circa 100 B.C. during rule of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, the last dynasty of Ancient Egypt (305 BC to 30 BC) and forms an interesting connections between ancient Egyptian and Roman civilizations, and the its essence of its design has, for several centuries, been the center of much speculation. Shortly after publication, the observations by Don Sante Pieralisi accompanied the mosaic on display in the Palazzo Barberini, where it had been placed by Prince Barberini after restoration mid-seventeenth century. Equally interesting is a chapter dedicated to the Rosetta Stone, the ancient stele decree issued at Memphis, also during the Ptolemaic dynasty. The author relates details of the French expedition to Egypt which uncovered it in 1799, and the controversial repossession and transfer to England following the Capitulation of Alexandria. He further presents important details of the temples of Apis, Serapis, and Venus at Memphis, other hidden tombs of Memphis, and pertinent Egyptian rulers.

Date seal: nengetsu 1858 horse, month 4. From the last year of the master's life. This is believed to be an early pull of an early {?} edition, and not a later reprint or a reproduction. Later printings tend to lack the date seal. Size (HxW):14.25" x 9.75" oban tate-e. Signature: Hiroshige. Publisher's mark of Tsuta-ya Kichizo. Condition: Very good impression, almost no soiling, colors very little faded, almost no creasing, a paper strip and thin paper to right edge, partially attached to thin backing paper, margins mostly intact. Superb color choices. Light ochre grounds, with medium blue stream, trees with autumn reddish-brown leaves plus green evergreen needles, blue-gray hills with purple-tinged skyline above and blue-tinged sky at the top. A notably serene image, with a few leaves floating down from the two red maple trees and farmers returning from the fields to their village in Meguro. Meguro-ku is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, the former Edo.

Oak Letter Opener of Wood from Shakespeare's Birthplace in Stratford upon Avon

N/A, N/A 1858 - [29 cm] An oak letter opener made of salvaged wood removed from Shakespeare's Stratford upon Avon birthplace during its restoration in 1858. An engraved silver shield (1858 Birmingham hall mark) appears on the handle with the motto: 'Made of Oak from Shakespeare's House at Restoration in 1858 Guaranteed Genuine W[illia]m Pearce Stratford Upon Avon'. Pearce was a Stratford watchmaker who no doubt engraved the shield himself. Shakespeare's birthplace and childhood home is regarded by the playwright's devotees as something akin to a secular shrine and this is a rare opportunity to own a small piece of the building. The provenance of the letter opener is that it was formerly exhibited at Stratford Armouries Museum before being deacquisitioned in 2015.

DOMBEY AND SON (Superb Example of the First "Cheap" Edition in Original Cloth)

Bradbury & Evans, London 1858 - Dickens, Charles. DOMBEY AND SON. Frontispiece by H. K. Browne ['Phiz']. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1858. Original blind-stamped green publisher's cloth with spines elaborately decorated in gilt. First "Cheap" Edition, first issue from the first and most important collected works of Dickens, with (in this case) a 2pp new introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece). Begun in 1847 with works already published, Dickens added further titles as he went along. Most were published by Chapman & Hall, however this particular title belonged to Bradbury & Evans (yet both provided a book nearly identical in design). Despite being called "cheap," Dickens made sure that these volumes were just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes in total, all are rarely seen in fine condition. A FINE copy, quite rare in this splendid condition, spine a trifle browned (as almost always with this olive-green cloth), trifling wear to the extremities, armorial bookplate of Henry Smith and blind-stamp of W. H. Smith. Bright gilt, excellent eye appeal. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

JUDGES AND CRIMINALS: SHADOWS OF THE PAST. HISTORY OF THE VIGILANCE COMMITTEE OF SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. WITH THE NAMES OF ITS OFFICERS

San Francisco: Printed for the author, 1858.. 100pp. 12mo. Gathered signatures, string-tied as issued. Lacks wrappers. Title and last page of text dust soiled, some light scattered foxing. Very good. In a folding cloth box, gilt morocco label. A vivid eyewitness account of the activities of the Second Vigilance Committee, one of the extra-legal organizations which evolved in California in the mid-1850s with the goal of ending the lawlessness then rampant. The attribution of authorship to Gray is due to a manuscript note on a copy seen by Cowan. Gray seems from the text to have been an outsider, but his eyewitness descriptions are detailed and insightful. Included are details of the murder of James King of William, the trial and execution of Casey and Cora, the role of state and federal authorities, the arrest of Justice David S. Terry for stabbing Vigilance Committee member Sterling Hopkins, the case of noted prize fighter Yankee Sullivan, and many more bloody and extralegal events. The appendix lists the names of the officers of the Committee, and describes its "military organization." This work was chosen by Cowan as one of the twenty rarest and most important books relating to California history. No copy has appeared at auction for more than forty years, nor is any copy listed in the Eberstadt catalogues. There are copies at Newberry, Minnesota Historical Society, and Yale, as well as ten copies in California institutions, as noted by Greenwood and Rocq. The present copy is among those listed by Greenwood, and has been deaccessioned (but bears no library marks). This is the only copy we have ever handled, sold by us to a private collector in 1993 and now re- acquired. GREENWOOD 956. SABIN 76048. HOWES G334, "b." GRAFF 2258. COWAN, p.319. COHEN 1533.

Charles Dickens displays his characteristic penchant for charity in assisting two young women and their mother

London, England, June 17, 1858. 4.5" x 7". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""Charles Dickens,"" 2 pages, 4.5"" x 7"", London, June 17, 1858 to John Hollingshead (1827-1904). Light toning along margins, expected folds, top margins slightly rough, small losses at corners filled in, minor mounting remnants on verso, else very good condition.Dickens writes, in full: ""The two young ladies and their mama have again consulted me on the expediency of postponing that idea for a time. After careful weighing in my mind what they have confessed to me in reference to engagements pending and existing, I have told them that I think them right, and that it is best deferred. Therefore I have this day put the papers by what I was making ready for you, and immediately write to let you know that I will keep them by me, until I shall be quite sure that we can use them for the family's advantage.""Dickens was well-known for his philanthropy, often finding himself hiding from supplicants who lurked around his home. Writing two months before the present letter he complained of ""Benevolent men ... behind the piers of the gates, lying in wait for my going out; and when I peep shrinklingly from my study-windows, I see their potbellied shadows projected on the gravel. Benevolent bullies drive up in hansom cabs ... and stay long at the door..."" (Dickens to Edmund Yates, April 24, 1858 as quoted in The Letters of Charles Dickens Vol. 2). Dickens was especially well-known for his charity toward ""fallen women,"" epitomizing the Victorian penchant to effect moral reform. In 1846 Angela Burdett-Coutts, a wealthy philanthropist, approached Dickens with a proposal to found an asylum to rehabilitate former prostitutes. Although Dickens initially attempted to dissuade her from going forward, he soon had a change of heart, and became intimately involved in the founding of what became known as Urania Cottage. The two decided on an alternate approach to rehabilitation: instead of focusing on the resident's formers 'sin,' the home would instead reward good conduct to reinforce positive habits. Specifically, Dickens proposed using, ""Captain Maconnochie's Mark System"" which involved awarding marks for good conduct, marks which are, ""deducted. . . for every instance of ill-temper, disrespect, bad-language. . . "" He defined the mission of the home to encourage ""the formation of habits of firmness and self-restraint."" Above all, Dickens believed, the system of education should be, ""steady and firm. . . cheerful and hopeful. Order and punctuality, cleanliness, the whole routine of household duties ?" as washing, mending, cooking ?" the establishment itself would supply the means of teaching practically, to every one."" (Letters, p. 554) Dickens personally located the house to be used in Shepherd's Bush, chose the staff, maintained the accounts, and even interviewed prospective inmates. The author maintained the cottage, which opened in late 1847, until 1858, when he ended his association with the institution?"about the same time that Dickens conspired to assist the three women mentioned in the present letter."

        History of the Afghans

London: John Murray,, 1858. Translated from the Original Unpublished Manuscript by Captain William Jesse. Octavo (217 × 133 mm). Recently bound in half calf, to style, marbled boards and edges, red morocco label, low bands with milled gilt roll, floral lozenges to the compartments, double rule in blind to the spine and corner edges, dun endpapers. Folding engraved map at the rear, and one full-page map. Light browning, else very good. First edition. "This book concentrates attention on the period from about 1700 until 1850 and includes critical comments on British policy. Travelling extensively from Iran across Afghanistan and Central Asia into India Ferrier developed a masterly knowledge of the history, geography, and languages of the area" (Yakushi). J.P. Ferrier, author, "diplomat", explorer, and soldier of fortune (1811-1886), served with the chasseurs d'Afrique in the late 1830s, being invalided back to France around 1837. "In 1839, while being prosecuted by his creditors, he developed a feeling for adventure" (Encyclopaedia Iranica), and signed up to serve as an instructor with the Persian Army. A rather ramshackle, unofficial mission to Persia was formed, which in the way of such freelance adventures imploded, "Only Ferrier had learnt Persian, and he imposed himself on the remaining officers … Ferrier was appointed adjutant-general and "chef d'état major" with an eight-year contract. He was sent to Zanjan to train cavalry battalions and was awarded with the Order of the Lion and Sun. His military mission soon revealed itself purposeless". Ferrier returned disappointed to France to only discover that Franco-Persian diplomatic relations had been reopened offering the chance of further service, and he immediately took himself to Baghdad. Receiving a meagre subsidy from the French government, he decided to undertake the perilous overland journey through Persia and Afghanistan to join the group of French officers at Lahore in the service of Ranjit Singh's burgeoning Sikh empire. "After the Anglo-Afghan war of 1832-42, conditions in Afghanistan were much disturbed. Having reached Herat with many difficulties, Ferrier was suspected by Yar Mohammed to be an English spy. After a long and perilous itinerary in Afghanistan, where he fell prey between rival local rulers [sic.], he would return to Herat and reach Tehran. During his voyage, and particularly at the end, he sent reports on the British in Central Asia to Henry Rawlinson at Baghdad and to Justin Sheil at Tehran. He brought to Sheil a manuscript from Alexander Burnes. He also reported to Sartiges on the political situation in Afghanistan". An account of his trip was published in an English translation in 1857, only being issued in French in 1870. He subsequently served similarly ill-fated results in Persia, France and finally India, having inbetweenwhiles bankrupted himself with an agricultural project on Rhodes. He died in Marseilles in 1886. In his preface Capt. Jesse makes the point that Ferrier's writings "can be more thoroughly appreciated here [in England] than in France; and that they must prove of real value in England is evident when we consider how great are the interests involved in the development - commercial, social, and religious - of that vast continent which Providence has permitted to fall under our rule". Uncommon, and a well-presented copy.

Memoire sur la fermentation appelee lactique.

. Paris, Mallet-Bachelier, 1858. 8vo (23.5 x 15.3 cm). 15 pp. [numbered (1)-15]. Original printed wrappers.l The beginning of bacteriology as a modern science and biological basis of fermentation, here in a very rare offprint, with its own printed wrapper and pagination. It is Pasteur's first paper on fermentation and contains most of the central theoretical and methodological features of his biological theory of fermentation, in particular the concept of fermentation as a product of the growth of yeast; the idea that air is a source of microscopic yeasts and other microorganisms, and the notion of specificity, in which each fermentation can be traced to a specific microorganism. Pasteur was able to isolate, observe and propagate the yeast responsible for lactic fermentation, and to demonstrate that its activity was dependent on its environment. Pasteur's concept of fermentation as a biological process challenged the chemical theory of fermentation put forth by Liebig, which Pasteur was able to disprove with his experiments on alcoholic and acetic fermentation."First demonstration of the connection between a specific fermentation and the activity of a specific micro-organism. This paper is often considered the beginning of bacteriology as a modern science" (DSB). Also published in "Annales de Chimie et de physique", serie 3 vol. 52, pp. 404-418. This printing is a roughly simultaneous publication in the "Memoires de la Societe des Sciences, de l'Agriculture et des Arts de Lille", 2e ser., 1858, 5, 13-25. Uncut. Skilful repairs to outer margins of wrappers, otherwise an excellent clean copy. Dibner, p. 198; DSB 10, p. 363; Garrison and Morton 2472; Horblit, 82; Norman 1653; Osler 1534..
