JUDGES AND CRIMINALS: SHADOWS OF THE PAST. HISTORY OF THE VIGILANCE COMMITTEE OF SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. WITH THE NAMES OF ITS OFFICERS

San Francisco: Printed for the author, 1858. 12mo. Gathered signatures, string-tied as issued. Lacks wrappers. Title and last page of text dust soiled, some light scattered foxing. Very good. In a folding cloth box, gilt morocco label. A vivid eyewitness account of the activities of the Second Vigilance Committee, one of the extra-legal organizations which evolved in California in the mid- 1850s with the goal of ending the lawlessness then rampant. The attribution of authorship to Gray is due to a manuscript note on a copy seen by Cowan. Gray seems from the text to have been an outsider, but his eyewitness descriptions are detailed and insightful. Included are details of the murder of James King of William, the trial and execution of Casey and Cora, the role of state and federal authorities, the arrest of Justice David S. Terry for stabbing Vigilance Committee member Sterling Hopkins, the case of noted prize fighter Yankee Sullivan, and many more bloody and extralegal events. The appendix lists the names of the officers of the Committee, and describes its "military organization." This work was chosen by Cowan as one of the twenty rarest and most important books relating to California history. No copy has appeared at auction for more than forty years, nor is any copy listed in the Eberstadt catalogues. There are copies at Newberry, Minnesota Historical Society, and Yale, as well as ten copies in California institutions, as noted by Greenwood and Rocq. The present copy is among those listed by Greenwood, and has been deaccessioned (but bears no library marks). This is the only copy we have ever handled, sold by us to a private collector in 1993 and now re-acquired. GREENWOOD 956. SABIN 76048. HOWES G334, "b." GRAFF 2258. COWAN, p.319. COHEN 1533.       London: Royal Society of London, 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) introduces matrices to simplify the notation which arises in simultaneous linear equations.         Autograph letter signed „Charles".

[Paris], 3. III. 1858. Paris 3 mars 1858 (3 p. in-8).

First edition of Virchow's acclaimed treatise on cellular pathology. His discovery that every morbid structure consisted of cells derived from pre-existing cells revolutionized the concept that any developed tissue can be traced back only to a cell. Using improved microscopic and biochemical techniques, Virchow succeeded in reducing pathological processes to alterations and disturbances occurring at the cellular level. "He advanced the notion that the body is a co-operative state in which every cell is a citizen and in which disease is a civil war brought on by action of external forces" (Dibner, Heralds of Science 132). Kalatdlit Nunata Assinga. [Billede af grønlændernes land].

1858 1858 - Lithographed map with bookprinted descriptions in Greenlandic. Map: 23x11,5 cm, total incl. text 32x28 cm. Signed (nungme nakitigkat 1858). Very rare map assumably lithographed and printed in Greenland by two of the pioneers in Greenlandic bookprinting. The descriptions of Northgreenland and of Southgreenland are printed separately and then afterwards mounted on the paper on which the map is lithographed, and the hole leaf as such made of 3 parts which then, finally, also is mounted on one piece of contemporary paper. In upper right corner of the map is a small drawing showing seals on drifting ice floes, kayaks, umiaqs and more in the front of a landscape with reindeers and dogsleds. The second volume contained eleven shorter philosophical and medical treaties, among which was the Encomium Neronis, a new biographical treatment of Nero, the much-maligned Roman emperor. It is a work that still has much to teach us, four and a half centuries later. - Today, the name of Girolamo Cardano pop ups here and there in books dealing with certain scientific matters. But he probably left his greatest mark on the study of algebra with the publication in Nuremberg in 1545 of his Ars Magna, which contained the solution to cubic equations. - His frankness-which reaches its apex in his discussion of the sexual habits attributed to Nero- can be shocking to a modern reader. " Angleo Paratico, A Cold Case of Historical Bias - - Enthält u.a. die frühe Abhandlung über Schlaf, Schlaflosigkeit, Traum, Traumdeutung, natürliche und übersinnliche Träume etc. - - (first 1562). Early and significant New Mexico imprints, containing legislation passed in the formative years of the territory, including first laws following its organization and the first re-printing of the Kearny Code. The individual titles with descriptions are as follows: 1) [First Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, PASSED BY THE FIRST LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE CITY OF SANTA FE, (AT A SESSION BEGUN AND HELD ON THE SECOND DAY OF JUNE, A.D. 1851;) TO WHICH ARE PREFIXED THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, AND THE ACT OF CONGRESS ORGANIZING NEW MEXICO AS A TERRITORY. This printing of the first laws of the Territory of New Mexico following its organization, includes the first re- printing of the Kearny Code. That code, written by Colonel Doniphan during the U.S. occupation of the region during the Mexican War and printed in Santa Fe in 1846, would be the first American code of laws locally printed in the far west. The Territory of New Mexico would be ceded to the U.S. as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and the territory officially organized in November 1850. The first session of the first legislative Assembly of the Territory met in Santa Fe on 1 December 1851, with the first act being an act to establish the Office of the Translator. With text in English and Spanish throughout, in addition to a re-printing of the Kearny Code this volume includes a printing of the organic law creating the territory, the acts passed by both the first and second sessions of the first legislature, a printing of the U.S. Constitution (in Spanish only, as issued), a list of the members of the Assembly and an Index to all the laws. As expected, the acts passed by the first legislative assembly include the foundation acts concerning the establishment of courts, elections, territorial militia, revenue, county boundaries, public lands, negotiations with Indian tribes, and much more. According to an act passed at the first session of the Legislative Assembly of the Territory (approved July 18, 1851, see p. 181), five hundred copies of the laws were ordered to be printed. This foundation work on the establishment of the Territory, printed in the Territory, is very rare. 2) [Second Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, PASSED BY THE SECOND LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE CITY OF SANTA FE.         ANNALS OF THE CITY OF KANSAS: EMBRACING FULL DETAILS OF THE TRADE AND COMMERCE OF THE GREAT WESTERN PLAINS

Kansas City, 1858. Original cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Light fraying at head and toe of spine. Foxed, plates generally clean. Overall just about very good. In a cloth case. A key book in Western Americana, both in regard to its importance as a summary and projection of the history and prospects of Kansas Territory to date, and to the interesting view it affords of the incidents of western migration: the Santa Fe Trade, routes of travel and trade in New Mexico, the exodus to California, etc. Also included is some mention of many of the men who were then playing key roles in the westward movement. The development of industry and railroads in Kansas and the region west to the Rockies is scrutinized, as is the status of Kansas City as the hub of the Texas cattle trails. Two of the plates depict the Catholic Church. It has been suggested that this work may have been the first book bound in Kansas City.

[KENNEBEC, WILDCAT, WILLOW AND HOOSIER BARS, MIDDLE FORK, AMERICAN RIVER].

[N.p. ca. 1858].. Large format salt print, 11 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches. Minor edge wear, very good. Matted. Charles Leander Weed was a pioneer photographer of California and the American West, creating the first photographs of Yosemite and other areas of California. He began photographing in California around 1855, at the same time as his contemporary and rival, Carleton Watkins. Weed created ambrotypes, daguerrotypes, and salt prints in a San Francisco studio, as a junior partner of Robert Vance, in February 1858. While here, Weed ventured to the Middle Fork of the American River to document the burgeoning community of gold mines. This photograph comes from Weed's Middle Fork mining series, the earliest series of views of California mining camps. It is an striking landscape showing mining work and infrastructure near the Middle Fork. The handful of salt prints Weed produced in the late 1850s are rarer even than his more famous mammoth Yosemite images. These photographs were collectively promoted by Weed's partner as Vance's "American River Panorama" but few survive. Only three other copies of this image are known, at Stanford, the George Eastman House, and the Placer County Gold Rush Museum in Auburn, California. The copy at the Bancroft Library is a later silver gelatin print which was made from originals at Stanford or the Eastman House "at an unkown date," according to their online catalog. "If ever there was an unsung hero of early western and Pacific rim photography, it was Charles Leander Weed. He was a pioneer of large-format landscape photography on the West Coast. In the 1860s he owned galleries from Nevada and California to Hawaii, Hong Kong, and China. Despite his many noteworthy accomplishments, Weed never gained wide recognition during his lifetime, and he still remains a shadowy presence....In October 1858, Weed went into the field with a large-format wet-plate camera that Vance had recently purchased. With this instrument he took a remarkable series of salted- paper prints of the Middle Fork of the American River. This expedition yielded at least seventeen scenes of mining along the Middle Fork, as well as views of Coloma, Placerville, and Foresthill. Unfortunately, Weed and Vance were delayed from unveiling this series, known as the American River Panorama, to the public when Vance's San Francisco gallery burned just before Weed's return from the expedition" - Palmquist.         Wagon Road from Fort Defiance to the Colorado River. Letter from the Secretary of War Transmitting the Report of the Superintendent of the Wagon Road from Fort Defiance to the Colorado River

[Washington], 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 35th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives Ex. Doc. No. 124. 87 pp, with large folding map in rear pocket covering. Modern blue buckram with gilt title on spine. Old archival tape repair to final two leaves at gutter; map has one old tape repair and several small splits at the intersections. In 1857, Beale-an accomplished frontiersman who had traversed the country from coast to coast six times bearing dispatches in the late 1840s-accepted a commission to survey a wagon road and establish a trade route along the 35th parallel from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Los Angeles. The expedition is noted in part for Beale's successful use of camels as pack animals. The wagon road began at Fort Smith and continued through the New Mexico Territory and Arizona Territory to Fort Defiance, before crossing the Colorado River near present-day Needles, California. The Mojave Road continued west from where Beale's Wagon Road met the Colorado River, through the Mojave Desert to Southern California. The part of the expedition described here (from Fort Defiance in northeast Arizona to the California border, primarily presented in the form of Beale's diary) was conducted in the second half of 1857. Beale's letter of transmittal is enthusiastic with regard to climate, noting that there was no sickness at all in camp ("the medicine chest proved only an incumbrance") and that "even in midwinter, and on the most elevated portions of the road, not a tent was spread, the abundant fuel rendering them unnecessary for warmth and comfort." However, since "this will inevitably become the great emigrant road to California," he recommends the construction of several dams and bridges to make travel easier, as well as the establishment of a military post on the Colorado. This he says is "an indispensable necessity for the emigrant over this road; for although the Indians...are agricultural and consequently peaceable, they are very numerous...The temptation of scattered emigrant parties with their families, and the confusion of inexperienced teamsters, rafting so wide and rapid a river with their wagons and families, would offer too strong a temptation for the Indians to withstand." Graff 216; Farqhaur 20; Howes B-271, Wheat 939.
