Kalatdlit Nunata Assinga. [Billede af grønlændernes land].

1858 1858 - Lithographed map with bookprinted descriptions in Greenlandic. Map: 23x11,5 cm, total incl. text 32x28 cm. Signed (nungme nakitigkat 1858). Very rare map assumably lithographed and printed in Greenland by two of the pioneers in Greenlandic bookprinting. The descriptions of Northgreenland and of Southgreenland are printed separately and then afterwards mounted on the paper on which the map is lithographed, and the hole leaf as such made of 3 parts which then, finally, also is mounted on one piece of contemporary paper. In upper right corner of the map is a small drawing showing seals on drifting ice floes, kayaks, umiaqs and more in the front of a landscape with reindeers and dogsleds. The second volume contained eleven shorter philosophical and medical treaties, among which was the Encomium Neronis, a new biographical treatment of Nero, the much-maligned Roman emperor. It is a work that still has much to teach us, four and a half centuries later. - Today, the name of Girolamo Cardano pop ups here and there in books dealing with certain scientific matters. But he probably left his greatest mark on the study of algebra with the publication in Nuremberg in 1545 of his Ars Magna, which contained the solution to cubic equations. - His frankness-which reaches its apex in his discussion of the sexual habits attributed to Nero- can be shocking to a modern reader. " Angleo Paratico, A Cold Case of Historical Bias - - Enthält u.a. die frühe Abhandlung über Schlaf, Schlaflosigkeit, Traum, Traumdeutung, natürliche und übersinnliche Träume etc. Alle Erläuterungen sind mit Beispielen belegt, Cardanus berichtet auch von seinen eigenen Träumen, die seine Lebensentscheidungen beeinflusst haben. Im zweiten Teil seine Autobiographie, erstmals 1544 erschienen, sowie medizinische, philosophische und mathematische Schriften, darunter eine interessante Abhandlung über Edelsteine und Farben. - - (first 1562).         ANNALS OF THE CITY OF KANSAS: EMBRACING FULL DETAILS OF THE TRADE AND COMMERCE OF THE GREAT WESTERN PLAINS

Kansas City, 1858. Original cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Light fraying at head and toe of spine. Foxed, plates generally clean. Overall just about very good. In a cloth case. A key book in Western Americana, both in regard to its importance as a summary and projection of the history and prospects of Kansas Territory to date, and to the interesting view it affords of the incidents of western migration: the Santa Fe Trade, routes of travel and trade in New Mexico, the exodus to California, etc. Also included is some mention of many of the men who were then playing key roles in the westward movement. The development of industry and railroads in Kansas and the region west to the Rockies is scrutinized, as is the status of Kansas City as the hub of the Texas cattle trails. Two of the plates depict the Catholic Church. It has been suggested that this work may have been the first book bound in Kansas City.

[CONSECUTIVE RUN OF THE PRINTINGS OF THE FIRST THROUGH SEVENTH LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLIES OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO]

Santa Fe, 1858. Early 20th-century cloth, leather labels. Some wear to labels. Institutional ink and blind stamps on titles. Very good. Early and significant New Mexico imprints, containing legislation passed in the formative years of the territory, including first laws following its organization and the first re-printing of the Kearny Code. The individual titles with descriptions are as follows: 1) [First Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, PASSED BY THE FIRST LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE CITY OF SANTA FE, (AT A SESSION BEGUN AND HELD ON THE SECOND DAY OF JUNE, A.D. 1851;) TO WHICH ARE PREFIXED THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, AND THE ACT OF CONGRESS ORGANIZING NEW MEXICO AS A TERRITORY. Santa Fe: James L. Collins, 1852. 442, [1]pp. Errata on terminal leaf. CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 65. McMURTRIE 39. SABIN 53281. This printing of the first laws of the Territory of New Mexico following its organization, includes the first re- printing of the Kearny Code. That code, written by Colonel Doniphan during the U.S. occupation of the region during the Mexican War and printed in Santa Fe in 1846, would be the first American code of laws locally printed in the far west. The Territory of New Mexico would be ceded to the U.S. as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and the territory officially organized in November 1850. The first session of the first legislative Assembly of the Territory met in Santa Fe on 1 December 1851, with the first act being an act to establish the Office of the Translator. With text in English and Spanish throughout, in addition to a re-printing of the Kearny Code this volume includes a printing of the organic law creating the territory, the acts passed by both the first and second sessions of the first legislature, a printing of the U.S. Constitution (in Spanish only, as issued), a list of the members of the Assembly and an Index to all the laws. As expected, the acts passed by the first legislative assembly include the foundation acts concerning the establishment of courts, elections, territorial militia, revenue, county boundaries, public lands, negotiations with Indian tribes, and much more. According to an act passed at the first session of the Legislative Assembly of the Territory (approved July 18, 1851, see p. 181), five hundred copies of the laws were ordered to be printed. This foundation work on the establishment of the Territory, printed in the Territory, is very rare. 2) [Second Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, PASSED BY THE SECOND LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE CITY OF SANTA FE. Santa Fe: James L. Collins, 1853. 3- 160pp. (Dampstaining, terminal leaf defective with some loss but with photographic facsimiles bound in). CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 73. McMURTRIE 49. 3) [Third Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, PASSED BY THE THIRD LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE CITY OF SANTA FE. Santa Fe: J. L. Collins, 1854. 3-219pp. CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 78. McMURTRIE 53. 4) [Fourth Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, PASSED BY THE FIFTH [i.e. Fourth, error in numbering of sessions] LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN THE CITY OF SANTA FE. Santa Fe: Santa Fe Gazette Office, 1855. 3- 147pp. CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 93. McMURTRIE 56. 5) [Fifth Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO PASSED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY. 1855-56. Santa Fe: Santa Fe Weekly Gazette Office, 1856. 3-176pp. CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 103. McMURTRIE 103. 6) [Sixth Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO PASSED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY. 1856-57. Santa Fe: Office of the Democrat, 1857. 3-112pp. CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 110. McMURTRIE 110. 7) [Seventh Assembly] LAWS OF THE TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO PASSED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY. 1857-58. Santa Fe: Santa Fe Weekly Gazette Office, 1858. 3-96pp. (Titles trimmed at fore-edge). CHECK LIST OF NEW MEXICO IMPRINTS AND PUBLICATIONS 1784-1876, 121. McMURTRIE 121. The acts passed in these years, i.e. between 1852 and 1858, cover a variety of subjects, from laws regarding individual rights to others establishing counties, courts, elections, and criminal codes, to particular prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons "within the settlements," laws on vagrancy, gambling, prostitution, selling liquor to Indians, and much more. Other acts deal with the incorporation of mining companies and establishing mail routes.         [KENNEBEC, WILDCAT, WILLOW AND HOOSIER BARS, MIDDLE FORK, AMERICAN RIVER].

[N.p. ca. 1858].. Large format salt print, 11 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches. Minor edge wear, very good. Matted. Charles Leander Weed was a pioneer photographer of California and the American West, creating the first photographs of Yosemite and other areas of California. He began photographing in California around 1855, at the same time as his contemporary and rival, Carleton Watkins. Weed created ambrotypes, daguerrotypes, and salt prints in a San Francisco studio, as a junior partner of Robert Vance, in February 1858. While here, Weed ventured to the Middle Fork of the American River to document the burgeoning community of gold mines. This photograph comes from Weed's Middle Fork mining series, the earliest series of views of California mining camps. It is an striking landscape showing mining work and infrastructure near the Middle Fork. The handful of salt prints Weed produced in the late 1850s are rarer even than his more famous mammoth Yosemite images. These photographs were collectively promoted by Weed's partner as Vance's "American River Panorama" but few survive. Only three other copies of this image are known, at Stanford, the George Eastman House, and the Placer County Gold Rush Museum in Auburn, California. The copy at the Bancroft Library is a later silver gelatin print which was made from originals at Stanford or the Eastman House "at an unkown date," according to their online catalog. "If ever there was an unsung hero of early western and Pacific rim photography, it was Charles Leander Weed. He was a pioneer of large-format landscape photography on the West Coast. In the 1860s he owned galleries from Nevada and California to Hawaii, Hong Kong, and China. Despite his many noteworthy accomplishments, Weed never gained wide recognition during his lifetime, and he still remains a shadowy presence....In October 1858, Weed went into the field with a large-format wet-plate camera that Vance had recently purchased. With this instrument he took a remarkable series of salted- paper prints of the Middle Fork of the American River. This expedition yielded at least seventeen scenes of mining along the Middle Fork, as well as views of Coloma, Placerville, and Foresthill. Unfortunately, Weed and Vance were delayed from unveiling this series, known as the American River Panorama, to the public when Vance's San Francisco gallery burned just before Weed's return from the expedition" - Palmquist. Mautz, BIOGRAPHIES OF WESTERN PHOTOGRAPHERS, p.153. Palmquist, PIONEER PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE FAR WEST, pp.585- 88. Palmquist, "California's Peripatetic Photographer, Charles Leander Weed" in CALIFORNIA HISTORY 58, No. 3 (Fall 1979), pp.194- 219.

Wagon Road from Fort Defiance to the Colorado River. Letter from the Secretary of War Transmitting the Report of the Superintendent of the Wagon Road from Fort Defiance to the Colorado River

[Washington], 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 35th Congress, 1st Session. House of Representatives Ex. Doc. No. 124. 87 pp, with large folding map in rear pocket covering. Modern blue buckram with gilt title on spine. Old archival tape repair to final two leaves at gutter; map has one old tape repair and several small splits at the intersections. In 1857, Beale-an accomplished frontiersman who had traversed the country from coast to coast six times bearing dispatches in the late 1840s-accepted a commission to survey a wagon road and establish a trade route along the 35th parallel from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Los Angeles. The expedition is noted in part for Beale's successful use of camels as pack animals. The wagon road began at Fort Smith and continued through the New Mexico Territory and Arizona Territory to Fort Defiance, before crossing the Colorado River near present-day Needles, California. The Mojave Road continued west from where Beale's Wagon Road met the Colorado River, through the Mojave Desert to Southern California. The part of the expedition described here (from Fort Defiance in northeast Arizona to the California border, primarily presented in the form of Beale's diary) was conducted in the second half of 1857. Beale's letter of transmittal is enthusiastic with regard to climate, noting that there was no sickness at all in camp ("the medicine chest proved only an incumbrance") and that "even in midwinter, and on the most elevated portions of the road, not a tent was spread, the abundant fuel rendering them unnecessary for warmth and comfort." However, since "this will inevitably become the great emigrant road to California," he recommends the construction of several dams and bridges to make travel easier, as well as the establishment of a military post on the Colorado. This he says is "an indispensable necessity for the emigrant over this road; for although the Indians...are agricultural and consequently peaceable, they are very numerous...The temptation of scattered emigrant parties with their families, and the confusion of inexperienced teamsters, rafting so wide and rapid a river with their wagons and families, would offer too strong a temptation for the Indians to withstand."         A NARRATIVE OF THE MISSION SENT BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF INDIATO THE COURT OF AVA

London 1858, Smith. Blue goat, gold decorations, 391p., map,. 29 lithos, hand-colored frontis & sepia litho plates, 3 maps. +a 67 x 93 cm. folding pocket map, 13 appendices, dictionary. glossary, 21 x 28 cm., sharp, 21 x 28 cm. FIRST EDITION RARE. A most important and classic primary book by a British Royal engineer and Public Works Department official of the British government. Sir Henry Yule [1820-1889] was appointed as sec- retary to the mission, which was led by Sir Athur Payre. The diplomatic mission was sent to repair poor relations with the Burmese King and his government, after the disastrous Anglo-Burmese wars. The British goal was to attempt to gain a treaty, and spoils of that war. The mission did result in Britain taking over lower Burma as its prize! * This work is perhaps Yule's best and most comprehensive book on the Burma, the Burmese people, their customs, religion [Buddhism], their great cities, with excellent coverage of Pagan. The lithographic illustrations to a great extent were actually sketched and drawn by Yule himself. They are quite handsome, and some are stunningly hand-colored; others were exectued by Colesworthy Grand an artist, and photographs by Linneaus Tripe. * CHAPTER HEADINGS: Chapter headings are: Journal of the Mission from the Brit- ish frontier to Pagan-myo; The remains at Pagan;Journal from Pagan to the capital; Our residence at the capital; The city of Amarapoora; Excursions in the environs of the capital; Return of the mission from the capital to Rangoon; notes on the intercourse of the Burmese countries with Western nat- ions up to the peace of Yandabo; Notices of the history of Burma from the peace of Yandabo [1826] to the revolution of 1853; Some account of the religion of the Burmese; The mini- sters of state-military affairs-revenues & currency; On the map of Burma-descriptive geography-and population; The Shan states tributary to Burma. * LITHOGRAPHIC ILLUSTRATIONS: The work is lavishly illustrated with 29 superb plates, a few are lacking plate numbers or out of sequence, but comp- lete. The fine plates show excellent examples of elephants, pagodas, temples, Burmese, and unusual hairy-faced woman [perhaps thought perhaps to be half ape-human ?]. With an especially nice hand-colored view of the members of the mission at an audience hall and recption of the envoy; they are seated on the floor, while two Burmese officials are on their bellies prostrate on the floor with hands together in the "prayer" Mudra showing respect to the two royal persons seated upon a high lotus throne; who look like the King and Queen. A good number of the lithographic plates do show "Capt'n Yule" in the lower corner. Several are delicately hand-colored with great skill. * Yule was the 1872 Founder's Medal recipient, "For eminent services to Geography". And also was awarded the Patron's Medal -Robert B. Shaw: "For journeys in Eastern Turkistan, and for his extensive astronomical & hypsometrical observat- ions." In 1889 Colonel Sir Henry Yule was awarded the KCII CBHe; and also received for distinguished service to the Society, to Geography in Scotland, or to public life in Scotland related to the Society. * A truly lovely and magnificent early primary source on Burma, beautifully illustrated. * WITH 13 APPENDICIES: A. Notes on the geological features of the banks of the Irawadi, and of the country North of Amarapoora. B. From appendix b. to the Ms. Journal of Major H. Burney, resident at Ava, accompanying a letter dated 11th September, 1830, in the Foreign Office, Calcutta. C. Translation of the Burmese Hymn chanted by the Brahmins. D. Letter from the Governor-General to the King of Ava. E. The King's letter to the Governor-General. F. On the plan of Burmese Monasteries. G. On the sources of the Irawadi. H. Detail of imports & exports. I. Specimens of the reigning King's edicts. J. Specimen of a Burmese drama [Major Phayre]. K. The mission of Gerare Van Wustohof to the King of the Laos. L. Note on the Affinities of the Indian and Burmese styles of architecture by James Furgusson, Esq. M. On the languages spoken in Burma and the adjacent countries [a large folding chart]. * THE FOLDING MAP: Title:THIS NEW MAP OF BURNA & THE REGIONS ADJACENT; IS INSCRIBED TO SIR RODERICK I. MURCHISON, P.R.G.S. &C...London 1857. It was executed by Yule, and shows the Himalayan Mountains and Mishmeeg at about ca. 28 degrees North at the top, down to 13 degrees at the bottom showing the Gt. Andaman Island and Tenasserim after which is Bangkok and the Gulf of Siam. A portion of China & Yunnan are to the far Eastern area. The map folds down to ca. 16 x 24.5 cm., and has some archival clear type tape on the tender folds and joints, as well as some old paper backing on one fold; A key is shown in the left lower corner, with a note: Names of the tribes in red, which refers to the various tribes sprinkled throughout the map shown in red. The map is done in great detail showing the mountains & their elevations, rivers, cities, and tribal areas, as well as. It is a bit toned, and has a few foxing spots on the folds, by and large in very nice condition for its age. The map is contained in a cloth pocket at the back of the book. In all, there are two other pages showing color maps, one of which has 4 maps on a single page. * CONDITION: The entire work is in very clean condition, and was rebound some time ago in full crushed blue goat leather, using two parts of the old blue gold-stamped & quite attractive spine and cover cloth designs, which are tastefully affixed to the binding. It has clean gray-laid end papers. The verso of the frontis lithograph has some fox spots, with faint & smaller spots to the illustration; the title page is clean & without any foxing whatsoever. Each of the 29 lithographic plates are clean and the small amount of foxing is limited to a few spots in the margin area. Thus leaving the image exception- ally clean. The binding & pages are solid, square and right. The book is complete and in collector's condition. It looks remarkably sharp given its size and large size. We tend to be over critical about grading the condition and are confi- dent that you will be happily surprised with the condition. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: This title is cited in: =John F. Embree & Lilian O.         CALIFORNIA AND ITS RESOURCES. A WORK FOR THE MERCHANT, THE CAPITALIST, AND THE EMIGRANT

London, 1858. Tinted lithographic frontispiece. Original black pebbled cloth, stamped in gilt and blind, spine gilt. Cloth quite rubbed, worn at spine ends, corners bumped. Internally fresh and clean. Overall, very good. "One of the best early surveys of the natural resources of California" - Currey & Kruska. A thorough and lively work on California, with much on the state's natural resources, history, and economy, as well as its gold fields and agricultural prospects. The tinted frontispiece showing Yosemite Falls and another tinted plate showing Yosemite Valley were derived from sketches made in 1855, and appear to be the first views of Yosemite Valley to be published in a book. Other illustrations show buildings in San Francisco, forest scenes, and mining operations. Wheat says the illustrations "are of much Gold Rush significance." One map shows all of California, while the other shows several routes to California from England and Europe, including overland from New York or New Orleans, across the Isthmus of Panama, or around the Horn. "Scarce....One of the best books on the resources of California, with much historical material on the Vigilance Committee" - Howell.

Mémoire sur la fermentation appelée lactique.Paris: Victor Masson, 1858.

"First printing of this landmark paper, "often considered the beginning of bacteriology as a modern science, [which constitutes] the first demonstration of the connection between a specific fermentation and the activity of a specific microorganism" (Garrison & Morton). "In this epochal paper [Pasteur] first published his research on lactic fermentation ... A great milestone in biochemistry" (Neville II, p. 274). "Pasteur's first paper on fermentation contains most of the central theoretical and methodological features of his biological theory of fermentation, in particular the concept of fermentation as a product of the growth of yeast, the idea that air is a source of microscopic yeasts and other micro-organisms, and the notion of specificity, in which each fermentation could be traced to a specific micro-organism" (Dibner). "Pasteur's concept of fermentation as a biological process challenged the chemical theory of fermentation put forth by Liebig, which Pasteur was able to disprove with his experiments on alcoholic and acetic fermentation" (Norman).<br/><br/> "Pasteur's memoir expressed the basic approach and point of view which informed all of his subsequent work on fermentation. After a historical introduction he began by claiming that "just as an alcoholic ferment exists-namely, brewer's yeast-which is found wherever sugar breaks down into alcohol and carbonic acid-so too there is a special ferment-a lactic yeast-always present when sugar becomes lactic acid" ... Throughout the memoir Pasteur more nearly assumed than proved that lactic yeast "is a living organism, ... that its chemical action on sugar corresponds to its development and organization," and that the nitrogenous substances in the fermenting medium served merely as its food. Nonetheless, his convictions were firm and his conception of fermentation was already remarkably complete ... With two striking exceptions this memoir contains the central theoretical and methodological features of all of Pasteur's work on fermentation-the biological conception of fermentation as the result of the activity of living microorganisms; the view that the substances in the fermenting medium serve as food for the causative microorganism and must therefore be appropriate to its nutritional requirements; the notion of specificity, according to which each fermentation can be traced to a specific microorganism; the recognition that particular chemical features of the medium can promote or impede the development of any one microorganism in it; the notion of competition among different microorganisms for the aliments contained in the media; the assumption that air might be the source of the microorganisms that appear in fermentations; and the technique of directly and actively sowing the microorganism presumed responsible for a given fermentation in order to isolate and purify it. ". Pp. 404-418 in Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Troisième Série, Tome 52, 1858. 8vo (226 x 142 mm), pp. 512 with one folding lithographed plate. Uncut and unopened in original printed wrappers. Edward Beyer was a German artist who visited the United States in the early 1850s. He chose to concentrate his work on Virginia and Kentucky, spending three years in Virginia working on the original drawings for this book. Although the title notes that the copyright was registered by Beyer in the District of Virginia, the book was actually produced in Germany, with the plates being prepared in Dresden or Berlin. The superb tinted lithograph views (printed in black with, generally, two further colours) include beautiful natural scenes, Harper's Ferry, White Sulphur Springs, railroad bridges and tunnels (e.g Highbridge near Farmville), views in Weyer's Cave, and scenes at many of the fashionable spa resorts which nestled amid the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Deak writes of Beyer: "He was taken by the beauty of the Virginia landscape, particularly by the elegant settings of some of the region's watering places. Virginians responded warmly to Beyer's enterprise and often gave him advance access to architectural plans when these could be of help to him. There was probably no Virginia county that Beyer left unvisited in his zeal to present what is, in fact, an affectionate family album of an entire state." Deak praises Beyer's "delicate and precise style" and "characteristic refinement of proportion." Cf. Bennett p.10; cf. Deak Picturing America 721; cf. Howes B413 ("b"); cf. Sabin 5125.

Map of the Territory of the United States from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean; Ordered by the Hon. Jeff'n Davis, Secretary of War to accompany the Reports of the Explorations for a Railroad Route ... Compiled from authorized explorations and other reliable data by Lieut. G. K. Warren, Topl. Engrs. ... under the direction of Bvt. Maj. W. H. Emory, Topl. Engrs. in 1854 and of Capt. A. A. Humphreys, Topl. Engrs. 1854-5-6-7-8 ... Drawn by E. Freyhold. Engr. on Stone by J. Bien..

New York: J. Bien, 1858. Lithographed folding map, printed on two large unjoined sheets. Listing of "Authorities" (i.e. sources) in the lower right. Early (circa 1861) manuscript annotations identifying mineral deposits as well as an outline of Dakota Territory. Rare 1858 issue of Warren's seminal map of the American West, with manuscript annotations concerning mineral deposits. "The men who mapped the trans-Mississippi West are among the best known of our national historical figures -- Meriwhether Lewis and William Clark, Zebulon M. Pike, and John C. Fremont, to name a few of the most prominent. But it is the one of the lesser-known mapmakers, Gouverneur Kemble Warren ... who produced the most important map of the American West prior to the Civil War" (Patricia Van Ee, in Mapping the West). The first edition of Warren's landmark map was engraved by Selmar Siebert and published in Vol. XI of the Pacific Railroad Reports. The map was subsequently re-engraved and re-issued in a variety of formats into the 1870s. The first such re-issue is among the rarest and would be the basis for all subsequent revisions. On copies of that edition, as here, the map is entirely re-engraved, with the topographic hachuring much more beautifully accomplished. Edward Freyhold's name is added below the scale of miles and Julius Bien's imprint appears replacing that of Siebert. Also on that issue, the dates of Humphrey's surveys in the title now include 1858, among other minor changes. Various issues of this edition seem to have been published: printed on two large unjoined sheets (as here); linen-backed on four sheets (Library of Congress and Rumsey); and with both uncoloured and coloured versions. All are rare. "Warren's masterpiece was a synthesis of the most reliable information available. Integrated into a single map for the first time were the discoveries of the earliest explorers beginning with Lewis and Clark, the information collected in the course of military actions including the Indian wars, the material generated by scientific expeditions, and the newly assembled data compiled during the Pacific Railroad Surveys of 1853-1855" (Mapping the West). The present copy includes a number of interesting circa 1861 manuscript annotations. The dating of the annotations can be discerned by the outline in blue of the boundaries of the original Dakota Territory (i.e. before being divided into smaller territories). Besides the outline of the territory, across much of the map, the same hand has identified mineral deposits, most notably being gold in present day Montana, Colorado, Washington, and California. Also shown are deposits of coal and silver. Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 936 and IV: pp. 84-91 (1857 issue); Rumsey 2750; Mapping the West , pp. 172-175; Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p. 904; Schubert/Koepp, pp. 57-58.
