AWV 16]. La Muette de Portici. Autograph musical manuscript of the first six measures of the duet "Mieux vaut mourir," signed "D.F.E. Auber"

      - 1 leaf (250 x 230 mm), verso blank. Notated in black ink on hand-ruled 18-stave music paper, lowest staff blank. With autograph signature ("D.F.E. Auber") at head, tempo "Allegro non troppo" above first measure and "No. 3" to upper right corner (originally "No. 2"- corrected, most probably by Auber). Untitled. Fair copy of the first six measures of duet no. 8, "Mieux vaut mourir," of Mazaniello [!Masaniello] and Pietro from act 2 of the opera.Provenance: The German composer and choral conductor Siegfried Ochs (1858-1929); Louis Koch (1862-1930), a jeweler in Frankfurt whose large collection of musical autographs, inherited by his daughter Marie (b. 1895) and son-in-law Rudolf Floersheim (1897-1962), remains legendary. In very good condition. Not in Schneider. Kinsky, Manuskripte, Briefe, Dokumente von Scarlatti bis Stravinsky: Katalog der Musikautographensammlung Louis Koch (Stuttgart: Krais, 1953), p. 142.The complete autograph full score of the opera is at the Bibliothèque nationale, Paris. A grand opéra in five acts to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne, La Muette de Portici was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on February 29, 1828. The opera was Auber's greatest success, with the duet "Mieux vaut mourir" being particularly famous."The history of grand opéra begins with La muette de Portici. The characteristics of the genre include a new degree of magnificence in the sets and sensationally dramatic technical stage effects, the culmination of each act in a large tableau and ingeniously staged crowd scenes. The opera provided new opportunities for the director, librettist, set designer and costume designer to work together, and they made a careful study of the historical background of the Neapolitan revolt. The climax of the final scene with the eruption of Vesuvius was a sensation, and its influence was felt in grand opéra from Meyerbeer and his contemporaries to Wagner';s Götterdämmerung." Herbert Schneider in Grove Music Online."An operatic subject of such liveliness had not existed before. Here was a 'grand opera,' a complete tragedy in five acts and all in music. No trace of stiffness, bathos, high-priestly dignity, and all that classical stuff was left; it was burning hot and ravishingly entertaining." Richard Wagner: Reminiscences of Auber (1871).

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

Berlin, 30. XI. 1858. 2 S., 4°. An den österr. Chemiker u. The Poetical Works. With Original Memoir.

New York: J. S. Redfield, [printed by Richard Clay, London],, 1858. Illustrated by F. R. Pickersgill, John Tenniel, Birket Foster, Felix Darley, Jasper Cropsey, P. Duggan, Percival Skelton, and A. M. Madot. Octavo. Contemporary black pebble-grained full morocco, spine in compartments with gilt titles direct, blind panels to spine and sides, gilt-rolled board edges and turn-ins, black coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Engraved illustrations and decorations in the text throughout. Extremities a little rubbed, some very faint foxing, an excellent copy, sound and attractive. First edition thus, the US issue and as such the first collection exclusively of Poe's poetical works to be published in his native United States (separately from the first collected edition, including both poetry and prose, in several volumes 1850-6, also by Redfield). This edition of the Poetical Works was printed in London and then issued simultaneously in the US by Redfield (as here) and in London by Sampson Low & Son. Editions of the "Poetical Works" of Poe (who died 1849) had been published in the UK earlier in the decade but this US issue constitutes the first publication in America. This attractively printed Sampson Low/Redfield edition is also notable for its rich illustration (the roster of both British and American illustrators includes John Tenniel, whose famous illustrations for Alice in Wonderland would be published 7 years later) and for the "Original Memoir", thought to be by Charles F. Briggs, which appears here for the first time. Copies of Redfield's US issue appear to be more scarce than those of Sampson Low's UK equivalent, and copies in a handsome contemporary morocco binding must be scarcer still.

The ATLANTIC CABLE. Laid Aug. 4, 1858. Thompson, Ct., August 18, 1858

Thompson, Ct: Printed by J. J. Mason, 1858. 1st printing. Age-toning & soiling. 4 horizontal fold-lines, which have old tape reinforcement on the verso. Withal, Very Good.. Broadside, printed with green ink. 14" x 4-1/4" The laying of the transatlantic telegraph cable was an engineering feat of the first magnitude, and was initially accomplished by Cyrus West Field and the Atlantic Telegraph Company.  While this 1858 effort lasted barely a month before failure, as a 'proof of concept' effort, it was invaluable.  Its more successful successor would come a decade later.   This broadside begins by confessing the local populace's sceptical reception to the news of the cable's successful deployment, followed by the confirming text of the 3 first messages transmited: "THE FIRST MESSAGE!" as well as "THE QUEEN'S MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT BUCHANAN" and the "PRESIDENTS REPLY".   Reputedly, this broadside came from the Morse family estate, relatives of Samuel Morse the inventor of the telegraph, though this bookseller was unable to confirm this particular provenance. No copy recorded on OCLC. A very rare printed survivor documenting an event that effectively shrank the western world.

LA PORTE, SIERRA COUNTY. (STREET VIEW.) [caption title]

La Porte, Ca.: Published by J.C. Lester, Bookseller, etc., 1858. A slight bit of edge wear, else fine. A scarce California pictorial letter sheet, giving a view of the mining town of La Porte. The view shows the town's main street, and several businesses are identified, including Everts, Wilson & Co. banking house; Lee & Ned's Pioneer Livery Stable; the Hotel de France; and the Union Hotel. A number of men, women, and children are shown in the street, along with a miner carrying a pickaxe. The view of the town, which carries an "AE" monogram, is attributed to artist Alexander Edouart, son of silhouettist Auguste Edouart. La Porte is located near the north bank of Rabbit Creek (after which it had formerly been named), on a ridge between the Yuba and Feather rivers, at an altitude of 4500 feet. Mining began in La Porte around 1850 and continued throughout the decade. A printed description and history of the town surrounds the image, the two occupying the upper half of the whole sheet. Baird locates a total of only four copies of this view of La Porte. BAIRD, CALIFORNIA'S PICTORIAL LETTER SHEETS 129. CLIFFORD LETTER SHEET COLLECTION 136.

NOTICE. AT A PUBLIC MEETING OF THOSE OPPOSED TO THE RUNNING OF LARGE CATTLE, SHEEP & HORSES ON THE HIGHWAYS AND UNENCLOSED WOOD-LAND...[caption title]

Bridgehampton, N.Y., 1858. Chipped and worn around all edges. Old folds, general wear. A few light pencil notes on both sides. Good. Expertly matted, and protected with Mylar sheet. From the "if you let one in, the town'll be full of them" school of thought, this broadside announces a strict warning to all those who might let their cattle, sheep, and horses loose in Bridgehampton, a town in the Hamptons on eastern Long Island. Apparently some miscreants had allowed their animals to roam free on the streets and the unenclosed cleared woodland of the town. In order to stem the tide, a local "committee of prosecution" was appointed to go after the offenders. The names of the five members of the committee are printed in type, but the potential penalties are not described. Such ephemeral material, especially of so odd a situation, is quite rare.

Rossetti, Dante Gabriel- Autograph Letter] Re: Henry Taylor and Mentioning Ruth Hebert (model)

      - Three pages on thin onion skin paper (see description), 1858. Addressee not named, but not someone unknown to Rossetti. "July 13, /58. My Dear Sir, Pray accept the photograph which I am sending you to-day. I wish it were a better impression. The lines you will probably remember, are by Henry Taylor. I wanted till after the benefit, that I might report it. It was nearly a "decifer," I am glad to say, and your kind efforts bore fruit in more than one direction. Let me thank you from Miss Herbert as well as from myself. Will you excuse this wretched scrap of paper, which is all I can find- and believe me, Dear Sir, Yours sincerely, DG Rossetti." Henry Taylor was a contemporary dramatist and poet, a man of letters who was admired by the Rossetti family. Ruth Herbert, well-known stage actress, was a major early model for Rossetti, who first posed for him in a painting in 1858, the year of this letter. Near fine: a rare survival, given the fragile nature of the onion skin paper which Rossetti used, out of necessity.
