Guide : Lillywhite Guide for 1858,11th Edition (Smith 11/24)

1858. Hi, Here we have an 1858 Lillywhite Guide. 11th Edition. It is in original covers, however the front and rear of the book is not within, it starts at the title page (so 4 adverts missing) , it also ends on page 104 , but followed by a thick page, so not sure what is happening there as Smith quotes the last page of 112. Internally it is nice.

LA PORTE, SIERRA COUNTY. (STREET VIEW.) [caption title]

La Porte, Ca.: Published by J.C. Lester, Bookseller, etc., 1858. A slight bit of edge wear, else fine. A scarce California pictorial letter sheet, giving a view of the mining town of La Porte. The view shows the town's main street, and several businesses are identified, including Everts, Wilson & Co. banking house; Lee & Ned's Pioneer Livery Stable; the Hotel de France; and the Union Hotel. A number of men, women, and children are shown in the street, along with a miner carrying a pickaxe. The view of the town, which carries an "AE" monogram, is attributed to artist Alexander Edouart, son of silhouettist Auguste Edouart. La Porte is located near the north bank of Rabbit Creek (after which it had formerly been named), on a ridge between the Yuba and Feather rivers, at an altitude of 4500 feet. Mining began in La Porte around 1850 and continued throughout the decade. A printed description and history of the town surrounds the image, the two occupying the upper half of the whole sheet. Baird locates a total of only four copies of this view of La Porte. BAIRD, CALIFORNIA'S PICTORIAL LETTER SHEETS 129. CLIFFORD LETTER SHEET COLLECTION 136.

NOTICE. AT A PUBLIC MEETING OF THOSE OPPOSED TO THE RUNNING OF LARGE CATTLE, SHEEP & HORSES ON THE HIGHWAYS AND UNENCLOSED WOOD-LAND...[caption title]

Bridgehampton, N.Y., 1858. Chipped and worn around all edges. Old folds, general wear. A few light pencil notes on both sides. Good. Expertly matted, and protected with Mylar sheet. From the "if you let one in, the town'll be full of them" school of thought, this broadside announces a strict warning to all those who might let their cattle, sheep, and horses loose in Bridgehampton, a town in the Hamptons on eastern Long Island. Apparently some miscreants had allowed their animals to roam free on the streets and the unenclosed cleared woodland of the town. In order to stem the tide, a local "committee of prosecution" was appointed to go after the offenders. The names of the five members of the committee are printed in type, but the potential penalties are not described. Such ephemeral material, especially of so odd a situation, is quite rare.

[Rossetti, Dante Gabriel- Autograph Letter] Re: Henry Taylor and Mentioning Ruth Hebert (model)

Three pages on thin onion skin paper (see description), 1858. Addressee not named, but not someone unknown to Rossetti. "July 13, /58. My Dear Sir, Pray accept the photograph which I am sending you to-day. I wish it were a better impression. The lines you will probably remember, are by Henry Taylor. I wanted till after the benefit, that I might report it. It was nearly a "decifer," I am glad to say, and your kind efforts bore fruit in more than one direction. Let me thank you from Miss Herbert as well as from myself. Will you excuse this wretched scrap of paper, which is all I can find- and believe me, Dear Sir, Yours sincerely, DG Rossetti." Henry Taylor was a contemporary dramatist and poet, a man of letters who was admired by the Rossetti family. Ruth Herbert, well-known stage actress, was a major early model for Rossetti, who first posed for him in a painting in 1858, the year of this letter. Near fine: a rare survival, given the fragile nature of the onion skin paper which Rossetti used, out of necessity.

DR. KANE AT THE GRAVES OF SIR JOHN FRANKLIN'S MEN. FOR SUBSCRIBERS TO THE NEW YORK "ALBION." 1858 [caption title]

[New York: Printed by R. Dalton, 1858. Three very light stains in lower caption, not affecting image. Near fine. Matted. A striking print, presenting the scene of the famous arctic explorer, Elisha Kent Kane, standing before the graves of Sir John Franklin's men. The graves, dating from 1846 and located on Beechey Island, are for three seamen from the Franklin expedition who died. Kane is pictured in the frozen Arctic, looking to the left, and standing before three grave markers with the names of the dead explorers. He is dressed head to toe in furs and carries a telescope. Large, dark glaciers rise out of the background and his ship, the Advance, is seen on the left. British explorer Sir John Franklin and his expedition of more than 125 men were lost and died during his third arctic exploration, around 1850. After a few years, several British and American groups set out to find them. Elisha Kane was the senior medical officer of the first United States Grinnell expedition in 1850, and commanded the second Grinnell expedition of 1853-55. His heroism on that expedition and the fame gained from his subsequent book, ARCTIC EXPLORATIONS, and lecture tour, launched him to international stardom. "ARCTIC EXPLORATIONS lay for a decade with the Bible on almost literally every parlor table in America" - DAB. Kane, who was of frail health due to childhood illness and was exhausted by his explorations and touring, died in Havana on his thirty-seventh birthday, in 1857. The present image was originally painted by James Buckingham Wandesforde (1817-1902), a Scottish-born Canadian artist best known for his portraits. He created the image shortly after Kane's untimely death, most likely as a tribute to the heroic explorer. The engraving was executed by D.G. Thompson, and the print was sent out to subscribers of the New York ALBION. DAB X, pp.256-57.

JUDGES AND CRIMINALS: SHADOWS OF THE PAST. HISTORY OF THE VIGILANCE COMMITTEE OF SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. WITH THE NAMES OF ITS OFFICERS

San Francisco: Printed for the author, 1858. 12mo. Gathered signatures, string-tied as issued. Lacks wrappers. Title and last page of text dust soiled, some light scattered foxing. Very good. In a folding cloth box, gilt morocco label. A vivid eyewitness account of the activities of the Second Vigilance Committee, one of the extra-legal organizations which evolved in California in the mid- 1850s with the goal of ending the lawlessness then rampant. The attribution of authorship to Gray is due to a manuscript note on a copy seen by Cowan. Gray seems from the text to have been an outsider, but his eyewitness descriptions are detailed and insightful. Included are details of the murder of James King of William, the trial and execution of Casey and Cora, the role of state and federal authorities, the arrest of Justice David S. Terry for stabbing Vigilance Committee member Sterling Hopkins, the case of noted prize fighter Yankee Sullivan, and many more bloody and extralegal events. The appendix lists the names of the officers of the Committee, and describes its "military organization." This work was chosen by Cowan as one of the twenty rarest and most important books relating to California history. No copy has appeared at auction for more than forty years, nor is any copy listed in the Eberstadt catalogues. There are copies at Newberry, Minnesota Historical Society, and Yale, as well as ten copies in California institutions, as noted by Greenwood and Rocq. The present copy is among those listed by Greenwood, and has been deaccessioned (but bears no library marks). This is the only copy we have ever handled, sold by us to a private collector in 1993 and now re-acquired. GREENWOOD 956. SABIN 76048. HOWES G334, "b." GRAFF 2258. COWAN, p.319. COHEN 1533.       London: Royal Society of London, 1858. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) introduces matrices to simplify the notation which arises in simultaneous linear equations. He further introduces the ideas of unit matrix, matrix addition and multiplication, inverse matrix and powers of matrices.         Autograph letter signed „Charles".

[Paris], 3. III. 1858. Paris 3 mars 1858 (3 p. in-8).

The descriptions of Northgreenland and of Southgreenland are printed separately and then afterwards mounted on the paper on which the map is lithographed, and the hole leaf as such made of 3 parts which then, finally, also is mounted on one piece of contemporary paper. In upper right corner of the map is a small drawing showing seals on drifting ice floes, kayaks, umiaqs and more in the front of a landscape with reindeers and dogsleds.
