Agassiz, Louis
Boston: Little, Brown and Co, 1857. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover. Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) was one of the most important scientists of his time. Swiss-born, he became one of the founders of the American scientific tradition. In these five volumes he presents his research on turtles and on acalephs - jellyfish, nettles etc. The first two volumes comprise his monographs but the other twoinclude many detailed and exquisite plates of his subjects. This is an ex-library set from the Williston Seminary, and someone at this institution was apparently enamoured of the library's ownership stamp. There are intermittent stamps in the text, a stamp in the margin of each plate in volume II, on some of the plates in volume III, and none to the plates in volume IV. In the original brown cloth binding, but volume III has been rebacked. The foot of spine of volume I has one inch chip; all volumes have wear at ends of spine and around edges, with some repairs to worn areas. Library ownership label on front pastedowns. Still a decent copy of this important scientific work. This set may require an extra shipping fee. NAT/5093.

TENMEI ROJIN
108 finely color-printed woodcut illus. (mostly two-thirds of a page). 55 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. speckled wrappers (a bit worn & somewhat rubbed, eleven folding leaves with some worming in gutter, extending into images, neatly repaired), orig. title label on upper cover, modern stitching. N.p.: 1857 or 1858. First edition of this finely illustrated work by Hiroshige. Each page is divided into three sections: the top contains two poems, the central panel has a poem and a poet's portrait, and the bottom panel is blank. "Among artists of the popular school who were uncultured, although not actually illiterate, Hiroshige was an exception because of his literary knowledge and tastes. He was a man of facile pen, for in the diaries are apt descriptions and occasional snaps of cynicism, all of them delightful because they are casual and informal. Had he pursued literature with the assiduity that he espoused art, he would undoubtedly have become a writer or poet. Although, as, with any phraseology or puns which are ephemeral, and therefore difficult to translate into English, the following poems from 'Kyoka Momo-chidori' will indicate his usual vein: Putting aside the moon and snow, How delightful it is to live roundly, With a head more round, Than a dumpling round and round! The verse alludes to the common saying, Hana yori dango, meaning literally 'A dumpling is better than a flower.' Of course it treats with both satisfaction and mockery the author's own shaven head. Utashige was Hiroshige's name as a humorous poet. He sometimes signed this name to Harimaze-ye (mixed prints o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tennyson, Alfred
London: Edward Moxon, 1857. First illustrated edition of Tennyson's collected poems.. Leather. Good/The first appearance of the celebrated Moxon edition of Tennyson's poems, with 54 wood-engraved illustrations designed by 8 artists, including the Pre-Raphaeilites John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The Wiltshire-based art blogger "Hermes" informs us that Moxon conceived the project for the Christmas gift season of 1856, but Rossetti was late with his designs. Consequently, Hermes writes, "the book missed the Christmas market when its high cost would have been more acceptable, and therefore sold very slowly from February 1857. The financial consequences are said to have led to Moxon’s early death." In addition to the Pre-Raphaelites, members of the Royal Academy, such as Daniel Maclise, John Horsley and William Mulready, contributed many designs. In an academic article on the volume's wood engravings, Prof. Lorraine Janzen Kooistra of the University of Toronto wrote, "The Pre-Raphaelite illustrations for the Moxon Tennyson appalled and delighted Victorian readers for all of these reasons. Collectively, they established an entirely new approach to the art of literary illustration, one that influenced book artists for the remainder of the century and well into the twentieth.. 23cm; xiii, 375 pages. Jefferson Davis was Secretary of War at the time of the Survey expedition. A large number of issues surrounding the whole project existed still when he finally got appropriation to fund the project with the assistance of Senator Gwin, California. Some of the questions were: Where to build it? Where to begin and where to end? Which states to go through? As can be readily imagined the political and regional pressures were enormous. Finally, four routes were selected to be explored. The one most favoured by Jefferson Davis himself was the fourth route from Texas along the Gila River to San Diego; another supported by Senator Thomas Hart Benton followed the Kansas River to Arkansas to Salt Lake along the 37-39th parallels. Yet another proposed "middle route" ran from Arkansas through across New Mexico and Arizona and finally crossed the Mojave Desert in California. The northernmost route proposed came along the Missouri River across the Northern Rocky Mountains to Puget Sound, staying along the 47-49th parallels. In addition, of course, there were … [Click Below for Full Description]

There is statistical information about various Swiss cities and regions on both sides of the map with 22 attractive vignettes depicting industry native to each area as well as its architecture and landscape. These include Bern, Geneva, Lucerne and Zurich among others. The actual map has industrial centres, mines, major roads and railways, and places of interest marked on it. Alexandre Vuillemin (1812-1880) was a cartographer and a book editor based in Paris. Despite a prolific cartographic career, much of Vuillemin's life is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that his studied under the prominent French Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865). Vuillemin's most important work is his detailed, highly decorative large format Atlas de Géographie Commerciale et Industrielle, from which this map is taken.

OLIPHANT, Laurence.
Cordier, Sinica, col. 2376; Wang, Chopsticks, pp. 150-151. First edition of a highly entertaining combination of travel writing and diplomatic history. It describes the diplomatic missions of the Earl of Elgin to China and Japan in 1857-1859, which ended in various treaties opening the countries to the British. In his capacity as private secretary to Lord Elgin, Oliphant was present at all the major events and published his account of the brazen gunboat diplomacy immediately after his return to Great-Britain. Besides witnessing the bombardment of Canton and the siege of Tientsin, Oliphant also gives vivid accounts of life and events in China and Japan, including his delights in eating with chopsticks. With an owner's stamp "Joseph O. Buch" at the back of the first flyleaf in both volumes. Minor foxing in the plates and a tear in the frontispiece of vol. 1 repaired with tape. Binding chafed at the extremities, hinges with some cracks and tops of the spines damaged. Otherwise in good condition. A beautifully bound edition of a highly entertaining travelogue. This copy previously belonged toUstazade Silvestre de Sacy, of the Academie Francais, and was inscribed to him by the editor, D. - L. Gilbert. Ustazade was the son of the famous Antoine Isaac, the French linguist and orientalist. Ustazade was a literary and political contributor to Journal des Dbats. Schopenhauer favorably quoted several of Vauvenargues sayings, including: la clart est la bonne foi des philosophes [clarity is the good faith of philosophers], from Reflections and Maxims, 729], and: personne n'est sujet a plus de fautes que ceux qui n'agissent que par reflexion [none are so prone to make mistakes as those who act only on reflection]. Condition: In a half morocco Niedree binding, with marbled boards. Externally excellent withonly some very light marking to the boards and very slight rubbing to the extremities.
