Mail Art]. John C. Coffing.
July 8,, Hartford, Conn.: 1857 - 4 pages in autograph ink on a lined bifolia measuring 8.25 x 5.13 inches, about 500 words. Yellow cover with a Scott 26 stamp and rather illegible cancel, cover decorated in ink and wash, scant 3 x 5.5 inches. A friendly and funny letter from a young man (about 18 or 19) in New England to a slightly older friend in Milwaukee, tinged at times with melancholy: "I saw Hattie (as I suppose you know by this time) on my way home she is not well at all although they say she looks better than she has along back but it is low & damp where she lives. I tried to get her to go to East Hampton & make Lizzie Peck a visit. I was there also & saw her she is very much changed. Oh! Cal when I think of the change that takes place in my friends it only makes me sad knowing that I am growing old not being reminded of it at other times I entirely forget it." With other allusions to emotional tangles and news of friends. The real attraction of this letter is the accomplished cartoon cover in ink and wash--a man with a well-lettered address to Burnell under his arm dashes ahead with his hat flying off his head as he exclaims, "Clear the tract I run for Uncle Sam!" The identity of Cal Burnell is easily puzzled out; Calvin Jones Burnell (1835-1918) was born in Chesterfield, Mass. and spent at least part of his childhood in Lenox, Mass., before eventually ending up from 1880 onward in Hartford. There seem to have been two likely candidates for John C. Coffing--the young man (ca. 1838-1862) who died as an officer in the 10th Connecticut Infantry and who had family root … [Click Below for Full Description]

Loudon, Jane
On reserve. First edition, presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half title, "Mrs. J. Campbell Foster from her sincere friend J. W. Loudon, Bayswater Nov. 12th 1857". Author Jane Loudon (1807-1858) began writing to support her family after her father's death. "In addition to Prose and Verse (1824) she published anonymously The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century (1827), a pioneering work of science fiction that brought together political commentary, Egyptomania, and interest in technology. References to a steam mowing device, telegraph, and other innovations led John Claudius Loudon (1783-1843) to review the book favourably and to seek out the acquaintance of the writer, whom he believed to be male. They met in February 1830, and on 14 September of that year Jane Webb married Loudon, then forty-six, who was an indefatigable landscape designer... Jane Loudon worked closely with her husband on his Gardener's Magazine. Embarrassed about how little she knew about plants when they married, she attended lectures in London given by the botanist John Lindley, and wrote up her notes as articles. During the 1830s and early 1840s she accompanied her husband on tours through England and into Scotland. She served as his amanuensis, recording his observations about kitchen gardens, conservatories, and great houses and their grounds, as he recommended improvements and endeavoured to promote a taste for gardening as art. When production of her husband's Arboretum (1838) saddled the family with debts of £10,000, Jane Loudon turned again to authorship, and tapped the ready … [Click Below for Full Description]

KRAFT, ALBRECHT
1857. Fünfte Auflage. Wien, gedruckt by A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn, 1855. xii, 287 pp. & 1 folding plate at the beginning. Bound after: KRAFT, ALBRECHT. Die Moderne Schule der k.k. Gemälde-Gallerie. Als Anhang zu dem Verzeichniss derselben. Wien, Pichler's Witwe & Sohn, 1857. 22 pp. Slightly later marbled boards. Some foxing. The Imperial Picture Gallery had its origins in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was not until the 18th century that the various holdings were brought together and displayed in Vienna's Stallburg. In 1776 Maria Theresa and her son, Emperor Joseph II decided to transfer the k.k. Gemäldegalerie from the Imperial Stables — a part of the city's Hofburg Imperial Palace — to the Upper Belvedere. Inspired by the idea of enlightened absolutism, the intention was to make the imperial collection accessible to the general public. The gallery opened five years later, making it one of the first public museums in the world.

From the library of the Raglan family at Cefntilla Court, with recent armorial bookplate to FEP. A memoir of the British fighting forces during the early part of the Crimean War told through the perspective of an army chaplain; detailing the clergyman's duties, his relationships with the fighting men, and his experiences at the bloody Battle of Alma. Following the death of Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan (1788-1855), commander of allied forces during the Crimean War, 1,623 of his friends, admirers, and comrades purchased the estate of Cefntilla Court in Monmouthshire Wales, presenting the home to Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan (1817-1884) and his heirs in perpetuity as a memorial in remembrance of his father's contribution to the British military. Fischbach, Friedrich
4. Mit 23 (von 27) farblithographischen Ornamenttafeln im Format 29x21,5cm. 1 loser 4-seitiger Bogen mit Titel, Vorwort und Verzeichnis der Gedichte und Sprüche. In illustr.

OLIPHANT, Laurence.
Cordier, Sinica, col. 2376; Wang, Chopsticks, pp. 150-151. First edition of a highly entertaining combination of travel writing and diplomatic history. It describes the diplomatic missions of the Earl of Elgin to China and Japan in 1857-1859, which ended in various treaties opening the countries to the British. In his capacity as private secretary to Lord Elgin, Oliphant was present at all the major events and published his account of the brazen gunboat diplomacy immediately after his return to Great-Britain. Besides witnessing the bombardment of Canton and the siege of Tientsin, Oliphant also gives vivid accounts of life and events in China and Japan, including his delights in eating with chopsticks. With an owner's stamp "Joseph O. Buch" at the back of the first flyleaf in both volumes. Minor foxing in the plates and a tear in the frontispiece of vol. 1 repaired with tape. Binding chafed at the extremities, hinges with some cracks and tops of the spines damaged. Otherwise in good condition. A beautifully bound edition of a highly entertaining travelogue.
