        Les fleurs du mal

Poulet-Malassis & De Broise. First edition on vélin d'Angoulême paper, complete with the six censored parts. A superb Jansenist binding by Semet & Plumelle in deep red morocco, spine in six compartments, date gilt at foot of spine, gilt roulettes to head- and tail-pieces, black morocco pastedowns framed with gilt fillet, purple moiré silk endpapers, covers and spine preserved (upper cover and spine with traces of restoration work), gilt fillet to edges of covers, all edges gilt; slipcase edged with deep red morocco, marbled paper boards, lined with brown cloth. An exceedingly rare copy of the first issue, which as well as all the usual typographic errors of the first edition ("Feurs du mal", pagination error and so on), also has a printing error on p.12 ("s'enhardissent" for "s'enhardissant"). Corrected from the start of the print run, this printing error only remains in an absolutely tiny number of copies.  This copy is enriched with a manuscript correction by Baudelaire, who has crossed out the "e" and added an "a" in the margin, as if correcting proofs. This printing error, not in the corrected proofs in the collection of the Bibliotheque National de France, was due to the printers, who introduced a number of errors into this first quire, most of which were spotted before printing by Baudelaire, as this letter to Poulet-Malassis attests: "I have just received the first leaf. I hope it's not been printed, because your workmen have introduced new faults into it, like for example 'points' for 'poings', and so on."The error in "s'enhardissant" must have escaped his notice in the first instance and was not corrected till after printing had commenced.Baudelaire immediately corrected this error on the first copies he received - in pencil, as was his habit - before having the type corrected. After they had finished printing, he went on to find seven other faults one after the other, which he also corrected by hand on some copies as and when he found them. The bibliographies generally have "s'enhardissant" as the only error corrected during the printing process itself, but our copy also has other particularities which do not appear in most of the 1,300 copies of the first edition. For instance, on the verso of the half-title, there are four elements that are present on our copy which were successively to disappear during the course of printing:- "Les Editeurs" has an accent on the 'E'.- There is a space between "Ils poursuivront" and the comma that follows it.  - "toutes contrefaçons et toutes traductions" would later become "toutes contrefaçons et traductions".- "Les traits" does not yet have a capital letter.   The typographic corrections did not appear all at the same time. Thus, some copies have all these characteristics except the space before the comma, while others are entirely corrected, but with the space reinstated and another space inserted after "Lois" (which serves to order the typographic layout of the page). The title page also has several more or less marked variants:- The absence of the full stop and final bracket after "Les tragiques, liv.II", which characterizes this copy, was corrected on many others.- The space between the "4" and the comma in Poulet-Malassis' address is not yet present in this first impression, but would appear in other copies independently of the previous correction.- Finally, the spacing of the characters in the publisher's name differs according to title page. On ours, "libraires-éditeurs" ends level with the final "B" of "Broise"; while on other title pages, it finishes before the "B" or, by contrast, halfway along the "R".   The other copies we have consulted do not show a homogeneity of corrections, and one can see several states of the title page, with one or more corrections.A thorough analysis of these changes remains, therefore, to be undertaken. Let us merely say that the copies on Hollande that we have seen show the same typographic characteristics as ours, except for the error in "s'enhardissant".Let us also add that, contrary to the bibliographical information in current usage, the covers do not show differences other than the ones described by Carteret, first and foremost. Some of the errors that have appeared on the title page of this copy are indeed found on some covers, mostly on those of the so-called "third state", which seems always to be present on first impression copies, like those on Hollande (whose only difference with this "third state" is the price - 6fr instead of 3fr - marked on the back).   The covers having been printed after the main body of the work - if Baudelaire's letters are to be believed - it is hard to draw conclusions about this correlation between the first issue and the third state of the cover; but it does open the way to certain hypotheses.Might we suppose that the succession of states is not as we believe it to be and that, like the first quire, the errors were not corrected during printing but, quite the contrary, "introduced" by the workers at the press?A number of questions remain up in the air surrounding the printing and distribution of this work, despite its important place within French literature. Thus, non-expurgated copies are often presented as copies sold before Poulet-Malassis' "ridiculous surgical intervention" (to borrow a phrase from Baudelaire) on the 200 copies still available. In actual fact, Baudelaire's correspondence, like that of Poulet-Malassis, reveals that sales were far less galloping and most of the copies were quite simply pulled and "put away somewhere safe" by the author and the publisher. "Quick, hide - but hide well! - the whole of the edition; you must have 900 copies still unbound. There are another hundred at Lanier's; they seemed quite taken aback that I wanted to save 50; I put them in a safe place... There are 50 left, then, to feed Justice, that Hound of Hell!" Baudelaire wrote to Poulet-Malassis on the 11th July 1857. The publisher, too, swung into action by spreading his stock around various "accomplices", including Asselineau, to whom he wrote on the 13th July: "Baudelaire wrote me an urgent letter that I received yesterday, in which he informed me of the seizure. I want to see him before I believe it, but in any event we've taken some precautions. THE COPIES ARE SAFE and thanks to your good will, we will be sending by rail today a case with 200 copies still unbound, which I would ask you to keep until my next visit... "We have found no trace of these copies, placed in storage, then being brought back into commercial circulation. Could one draw a link between these unbound copies and the various states of the cover, for which we do not really know the reason (corrections being almost entirely insignificant)? Could these copies have been put back into circulation intact, despite the verdict? The rarity of copies of the first edition of les Fleurs du Mal would lead one to suspect that the unsold copies that were not subjected to censure disappeared, at least in part. That said, the enormous importance of this work has made it, right from the start, one of the most universally sought-after bibliographical items (a note on Poulet-Malassis' copy reveals that the prices of copies on Hollande multiplied by six in barely a few months) and therefore most difficult to acquire.Copies of the first impression - ours with an error corrected by the poet himself - in prestigious signed bindings are, after the few on Hollande and inscribed copies, the rarest and most prestigious state of this founding work of modern poetry.

Bruxelles: Pilliet, 1852-1854-, 1857. Four parts text bound in one volume, with epilogue and atlas volumes, the latter oblong folio; 18 plates (some folding) in the text volumes, 50 plates (see note) in the atlas volume, excellent impressions of all the plates; the three volumes differently bound: recent quarter morocco with green boards (text); early crimson pebbled cloth, modern half green morocco over marbled boards (atlas). First edition, with the full suite of lithographic plates, depicting any number of famous and important early maps, by a 'pioneer writer on cartography' (Tooley). This is one of the most important - and eccentric - early studies of the geography of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, and is only rarely seen complete with its folio atlas and the particularly uncommon epilogue volume of 1857.Lelewel's comprehensive intensive study of classical Greek, Latin and Arab sources, with each of the intricately engraved plates prepared by the author himself, includes the accounts of navigators, pilots and voyagers, and his scholarship makes it a significant source for cartography and the history of travel. The work is wide in scope, and whether Lelewel is discussing the foundations of modern Ptolemaic geography, the peregrinations of the Jewish scholar Benjamin of Tudele, or the great fourteenth-century Arab expeditions of Ibn Battuta, his synthesis of the field is magisterial.Lelewel was a Polish historian, educated at the Imperial University of Vilna. Although of Prussian descent, he became an ardent nationalist and his lectures on Polish history galvanised the country. One of the rebels of the November Uprising against the Russian authorities in 1830, he went into exile in Paris soon after the rebellion was suppressed, and was soon after forced to leave France for Brussels at the explicit request of the Russian Ambassador. A friend of Marx and Engels, he was a political agitator throughout his life. The plate count is complex, but the present example has the full complement. The folio atlas has 50 plates, as required: 49 are full page lithographs, while the remaining map (plate 47) is tipped on to the title-page, as instructed in the plate listing (this has caused some confusion among bibliographers; Howes, for example, lists "49" plates only). The question of the smaller plates for the text volumes has also been confused: Graesse calls for 12 plates, but the listing does not include the epilogue volume; Leclerc, who does notice the epilogue, calls for only 14 plates in total; Sabin does not list the smaller plates; and lastly, Howes lists 18 plates. This example with 18 & 50 plates, then, corresponds to the largest number of plates recorded by any of the bibliographers. A little frayed at spine epilogue.

New York: Calvin Blanchard, 1857. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Two volumes. New York: Calvin Blanchard, 1857. Second edition, revised and expanded. Born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Hittell (1825-1901) graduated from Miami University (Ohio) and practiced law before joining a company of adventureres en route to the gold fields of California. He spent the winter of 1849-50 in the mines of Reading's Diggings, then worked on Cottonwood Creek. After moderate success, he gave up the gold hunt in May 1850 and settled in Sonoma. In 1852, he moved to San Francisco and joined the editorial staff of Alta California, where he remained employed for the following 25 years. He also wrote several important books on California, including Yosemite: Its Wonders and Its Beauties (1868) and A History of the City of San Francisco, and Incidentally of the State of California (1878), as well as this controversial work in which Hittell employs "pantheistic evidence" against the supersitions of Christianity. Though widely condemned, it elicited praise from those associated with Transcendentalism and the Freethought movement. Nevertheless, Hittell later regretted the work and actively worked to suppress it. Presentation copy, inscribed and dated in the year of publication by Hittell to his brother, Theodore H. Hittell, a prominent San Francisco attorney whose History of California (four volumes, 1885-97) is considered the first serious and orderly study of the Golden State, on the front flyleaf in the first volume. Octavo. Original brown cloth bindings, with blind-stamped decorations and gilt titles. Light toning and justa hint of foxing to the contents, with some minor edgewear to the boards; otherwise very good.

Orig yellow pastedowns, with bookplate mounted inside the front cover. A Light spotting to prelims and title-page. A near-Fine copy. Scarce. On the subject of prostitution Acton concluded that "Vanity, giddiness, greediness, love of dress, distress, hunger, mark women prostitutes, but not general sensuality." Following publication of this major work, Acton spent the rest of his life trying to teach upper-class English citizens how to manage the idea of child masturbation. This was referred to as "masturbation hysteria" at the time, and people had several beliefs, such as that masturbation could lead to blindness. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This copy is unique in that it is inscribed to an attorney by the publisher himself.Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755 or 1757 - July 12, 1804) was an American statesman and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was an influential interpreter and promoter of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the founder of the nation's financial system, the Federalist Party, the United States Coast Guard, and The New York Post newspaper. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was the main author of the economic policies of the George Washington administration. He took the lead in the funding of the states' debts by the Federal government, as well as the establishment of a national bank, a system of tariffs, and friendly trade relations with Britain. His vision included a strong central government led by a vigorous executive branch, a strong commercial economy, with a national bank and support for manufacturing, plus a strong military. This was challenged by Virginia agrarians Thomas Jefferson and James Madison who formed a rival party. They favored strong states based in rural America and protected by state militias as opposed to a strong national army and navy. They denounced Hamilton as too friendly toward Britain and toward monarchy in general, and too oriented toward cities, business and banking. Hamilton was among those dissatisfied with the weak national government. He led the Annapolis Convention, which successfully influenced Congress to issue a call for the Philadelphia Convention in order to create a new constitution. He was an active participant at Philadelphia, and he helped achieve ratification by writing 51 of the 85 installments of The Federalist Papers which, to this day, are the single most important reference for Constitutional interpretation. Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied for the presidency in the electoral college in 1801, and Hamilton helped to defeat Burr, whom he found unprincipled, and to elect Jefferson despite philosophical differences. Hamilton continued his legal and business activities in New York City, and was active in ending the international slave trade. Vice President Burr ran for governor of New York State in 1804, and Hamilton crusaded against him as unworthy. Burr took offense and challenged him to a duel. Burr mortally wounded Hamilton, who died the next day. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rothe), Fr.

- Joseph Wilpert (1857-1944 in Rom), Priester, Christlicher Archäologe.
