        Little Dorrit

1857. First Edition . DICKENS, Charles. Little Dorrit. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857. Thick octavo, contemporary three-quarter vellum, red morocco spine label, marbled boards and edges. $1750.First edition in book form, first issue, of one of DickensÂ’ most outspoken and outstanding novels, with 40 illustrations by Hablôt Knight Brown (“Phiz”), including frontispiece and vignette title page.“In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government, against its financiers, against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who, at least in Bleeding Heart Yard, believed that ‘foreigners were always immoralÂ… that foreigners had no independent spirit” (Ackroyd, 758). Perhaps unsurprisingly, many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. DickensÂ’ friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: “They are forgotten in a week, and your book stands and lives” (Ackroyd, 780). And indeed, Little Dorrit does: not only a commercial success in its day (poor press notwithstanding) but also esteemed now as a “wonderfully rich novel— rich in ideas, rich in characterization, rich in incident, and written in a richly imaginative proseÂ… Many [modern] critics regard it as DickensÂ’ masterpiece” (Watts, 108). First issue, still retaining signature “B2” on page 371 and “Rigaud” mistakenly substituted for “Blandois” on pages 469-74. Eckel, 82-85. Smith I:12. Gimbel (Podeschi) A141. Armorial bookplate of Sir John Whittaker Ellis, onetime Lord Mayor of London and Member of Parliament. Dealer description tipped in.Plates generally darkened at edges (as often). An extremely good copy.

Virginians, a Tale of the Last Century

1857. First Edition . THACKERAY, William Makepeace. The Virginians: A Tale of the Last Century. London: Bradbury and Evans, 185759. Octavo, 24 original parts in original yellow printed wrappers, uncut and occasionally unopened. Housed in custom clamshell box. $1500.First edition in original parts, first issues, complete with all plates and advertisements, of ThackerayÂ’s tale of brethren divided during the American Revolution, the last book the author himself illustrated.Like his contemporary (and rival) Charles Dickens, Thackeray visited the United States (first in 1852-53, again in 1855-56); unlike his fellow novelist, however, Thackeray “had on the whole a happy timeÂ… He was willing, as Dickens had not been, to see the greatness of the country and recognize that the promise of the future atoned for the shortcomings of the presentÂ… Impressions of the second tour were worked into The Virginians,” ThackerayÂ’s continuation of the family saga he began in The History of Henry Esmond (1852) (Baugh et al., 1358-59). Here, the author traces the fortunes of Henry EsmondÂ’s grandsons as the Revolutionary War divides them. With 48 engraved plates and several small in-text woodcuts by Thackeray—the last book he himself illustrated. First issue, with the first word on page 207, line 15 from the bottom (in No. 7) misprinted “actresses” (corrected in later editions to “ancestresses”); in part 12, chapters XLVII-XLVIII misnumbered XLVIII-XLIX. All ads present, including the tipped explanatory slip in part 20, regarding omitted plates; an additional advertising leaf present in No. 1. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the bibliographerÂ’s copy, which has a publisherÂ’s catalogue at rear, may be anomalous. Afterward published in book form (two clothbound volumes, dated 1858 and 1859). Van Duzer 232. No. 14 with previous ownerÂ’s initials to front wrapper, pencil notations to rear of advertising slip. Nos. 21 and 22 with previous ownerÂ’s signature to front wrapper.Closed tear to first plate in No. 6; modest foxing to the plates in Nos. 7, 8,16 and 17; minor loss to lower corners of plates in No. 23. Interiors with scattered light foxing and marginal soiling, light age-wear and soiling to wrappers; minor creasing to final few leaves of No. 13; small closed tear to front wrapper of No. 24, repaired. An excellent copy in near-fine condition.

Substantial autograph Manuscript Fragment, unsigned, in French, with translation (Alexandre, 1824-1895, fils, French Novelist, Playwright and Writer on Morals and Society)

1857 - and transcription, of an unused portion of his comedy 'L'Ami des Femmes', first produced in 1860, a dialogue between J[ane de Simerose] and de M[ontègre], with many corrections in the text, between the lines, or in the margin, made at the time of writing, Dumas explores as many as four versions of a sentence before continuing, Jane passionately asks Montègre whether, if her husband has broken his word, that is a reason to break hers, "So long as I am to keep his name, I must respect it", if a wife gave herself to another, "each of the two would have this right to despise her, for you would despise me in spite of yourself if I were to believe you . Who do you take me for ? To put me in a web of lies, terrors, insults, adulteries . to lower myself in the esteem of others and my own - Never", 2 sides folio on blue paper, old identification of the handwriting in French, no place, no date but watermark 'Towgood's Extra Super' dated very light mending of short side tears This passage may have been a trial for part of Act IV. In the published play, Act I introduces de Royes, the 'friend' of the title, who claims to be an expert on women, and de Montègre, who has briefly met Jane two or three times before. She loved but is separated from her husband, who was unfaithful after a month of marriage. Meeting Montègre again, she wistfully thinks he might be someone she could trust and writes a note asking him to meet her 'tomorrow - I love you'. However, her husband turns up near the end of Act III, with adoption papers for a young orphan, whom he hopes Jane will bring up with his support, and Jane is given pause. In Act IV she is trailed by Montègre to Paris, where she gives him the slip. On returning home she upbraids him for following her in secret rather than declaring himself openly, and refuses to trust him. At the end of Act V Montègre arranges for Jane's note of assignation to be put in the hands of the husband as if from Jane herself, Royes' 'expert' knowledge is counfounded, and Jane and her husband are reconciled. (See Dumas' Théâtre Complet, vol. 4). The present fragment suggests an alternative which Dumas could not use, possibly because it seemed too final at this stage of the play.

A Narrative of Dr. Livingston's Discoveries in South-Central Africa, from 1849 to 1856. Reprinted by arrangement from the "British Banner" Newspaper. With an accurate map.

First edition. Small 8vo. pp. iv, 6-64; folding map frontispiece; very good in the original printed orange boards, worn on spine with slight loss, a very good copy. The publication of this short narrative - "the first authentic narrative of the important exploration of the Rev. Dr. Livingston" (Preface) - preceded the appearance of Livingstone's fuller account in Missionary Travels (1857). It had previously been issued as "detached portions" in the British Banner. Despite the claim in the pamphlet's Preface that the map had been "submitted to Dr. Livingston" prior to publication, "Kalahari" has been misspelt "Lahari". Moreover, Livingstone's name appears without the final '-e' both on the cover and throughout the text, a spelling that Livingstone himself dropped around this time.

Poems of the Late Francis S. Key, Esq. [Star Spangled Banner]

Robert Carter and Brothers. Hardcover. New York, 1857. 8vo, publisher's black cloth, xii, (13)-203 pp. First edition. The first edition of the Star Spangled Banner in book form. It had been printed only as a broadside in 1814. A BAL 11093 binding B, with no sequence noted. A good plus to very good minus copy with excellent contents. Lean to spine, chipping to cloth at head and heel of spine, contemporary ownership signature to title page, light normal shelfwear. Remains well preserved. "'The Star-Spangled Banner' has been in recent times censured for its awkward melodic line, but its lyrics are now so much a part of the popular patriotic imagination that any attempt at literary analysis would perhaps seem unusual. (The second and third stanzas of the original song are often omitted in public ceremonies as a gesture of courtesy to the British; the words "hireling and slave" of stanza three refer to the common British practice of using mercenary soldiers.) It is interesting that the critic Charles F. Richardson, writing in American Literature, mentions the "bald, rude rhymes" in the work. He goes on to say that the song, along with "Adams and Liberty" and "Hail Columbia," is "so closely enshrined in the patriotic heart . . . that no one stops to think of . . . [its] literary poverty" (vol. 2 [1889] p. 26). Richardson's comments seem a just assessment of a work that had not yet become a national symbol." - ANB.         Géographie du moyen Age, étudiée par Joachim Lewelel.

Bruxelles: Pilliet, 1852-1854-, 1857. Four parts text bound in one volume, with epilogue and atlas volumes, the latter oblong folio; 18 plates (some folding) in the text volumes, 50 plates (see note) in the atlas volume, excellent impressions of all the plates; the three volumes differently bound: recent quarter morocco with green boards (text); early crimson pebbled cloth, modern half green morocco over marbled boards (atlas). First edition, with the full suite of lithographic plates, depicting any number of famous and important early maps, by a 'pioneer writer on cartography' (Tooley). This is one of the most important - and eccentric - early studies of the geography of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, and is only rarely seen complete with its folio atlas and the particularly uncommon epilogue volume of 1857.Lelewel's comprehensive intensive study of classical Greek, Latin and Arab sources, with each of the intricately engraved plates prepared by the author himself, includes the accounts of navigators, pilots and voyagers, and his scholarship makes it a significant source for cartography and the history of travel. The work is wide in scope, and whether Lelewel is discussing the foundations of modern Ptolemaic geography, the peregrinations of the Jewish scholar Benjamin of Tudele, or the great fourteenth-century Arab expeditions of Ibn Battuta, his synthesis of the field is magisterial.Lelewel was a Polish historian, educated at the Imperial University of Vilna. Although of Prussian descent, he became an ardent nationalist and his lectures on Polish history galvanised the country. One of the rebels of the November Uprising against the Russian authorities in 1830, he went into exile in Paris soon after the rebellion was suppressed, and was soon after forced to leave France for Brussels at the explicit request of the Russian Ambassador. A friend of Marx and Engels, he was a political agitator throughout his life. The plate count is complex, but the present example has the full complement. The folio atlas has 50 plates, as required: 49 are full page lithographs, while the remaining map (plate 47) is tipped on to the title-page, as instructed in the plate listing (this has caused some confusion among bibliographers; Howes, for example, lists "49" plates only). The question of the smaller plates for the text volumes has also been confused: Graesse calls for 12 plates, but the listing does not include the epilogue volume; Leclerc, who does notice the epilogue, calls for only 14 plates in total; Sabin does not list the smaller plates; and lastly, Howes lists 18 plates. This example with 18 & 50 plates, then, corresponds to the largest number of plates recorded by any of the bibliographers. A little frayed at spine epilogue.

Cenni sul Museo Civico di Milano ed Indice sistematico dei Rettili ed Anfibi...

Milano: Giacomo Pirola, 1857. Large octavo, large folding plan, 61 pp.; in neat modern green paper boards. Complete with the large folding plan, which gives a detailed overview of a collection of international significance, and one which included one of the most important early collections of Australian snakes and reptiles.A rare publication describing in detail the natural history collections of Milan, and particularly the collection of Reptiles and Amphibians. The Milan Natural History Museum was founded in 1838 by naturalists Giuseppe de Cristoforis and Giorgio Jan, who donated their private collections in order to make a new collection on the newest scientific principles. The Museum opened in 1844 with Jan, an important herpetologist, botanist and naturalist, as the first Director. An interesting and very modern feature of the museum, described at page 11, was the design of the labels of the specimens. The frame of every label of every species was coloured with a different colour according to the Continent to which each species belongs (Asia was yellow, for example, while Oceania was blue).Sadly the collection endured almost comprehensive losses during the Second World War when it was bombed in 1943, which does make such printed guides even more significant as a reflection on what has been lost. This guide, the first such published, includes a detailed description of the museum (pp. 1-25); an introduction to the scientific designation of reptiles and amphibians (pp. 27-33); and a detailed list of the specimens held in Milan (pp. 35-61). Of the actual specimens, the Museum had approximately 400 mammals, 1900 birds, a genuinely impressive 950 reptiles (which would have made it one of the preeminent collections in the world), and 900 fish. Included in this number are a great quantity of Australian and Pacific species: of reptiles, 39 from Australia, 1 from Tasmania, and 3 from New Zealand, together with 10 Australian amphibians. The museum also hosted any number of more familiar Australian birds and animals such as the Thylacine, platypus, echidna and many birds. Some spotting but a very good copy.

        D'Albert's Album 1857.

Chappell & Co. London. 1857. - Gift book, 14 x 10 inches, 136 pp. featuring music by Charles D'Albert and chromolithographic plates by John Brandard. Covers detached; heavy wear to extremities. Leather spine peeling and abraded. Decorative embossed cover with gilt lettering and decorative embellishments (overall light soiling and wear). Hanhart. Contents in good clean condition. The four large color plates in this volume represent illustrations used for cover art when D'Albert's compositions were published and sold individually. Space at the top and bottom of the chromo illustrations, left blank as published in the Album, would have been utilized in the sheet music's solo edition for printing the composition's title at top and, at bottom, publisher details. As preserved in the Album, the four chromolithographic plates (plus title and presentation pages) are in near mint condition. D'Albert's music with Brandard's illustrations are quite scarce in Album format. The four plates illustrate The Queen's Valse (a young Queen Victoria); Estelle (plate not present); St. Petersburg Quadrille (spelled on the Contents page as Petersburgh); The Sybil Valse; the Savoyard Polka. An uncommon publication with condition issues noted. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
