Handwritten in pencil at top edge, in unknown hand, ?(fermentation de l?acide Tartrique) From his laboratory / notebook / tartaric acid.?Seven groups of 11 numbered items, possibly test tubes, have been handwritten by Pasteur: One group on June 19th, four groups on June 22nd, and two groups on June 28th. In his notes to the right of the June 19th group, Pasteur brackets Numbers 1 and 2 and, in French, compares numbers 5 and 7 with 8 and 9, concluding ?In the same way N. 8 and 9 during the 24 first hours.? He then pens ?Report of N.3 and 4 / N.1 and 2 = 4, 6.? On June 22nd, Pasteur brackets four additional pairs of numbers and ?Report = 4, 3.? There are numerous brackets on the second page.Pasteur found that although tiny organisms were essential in fermentation they must be the right ones. He showed brewers how to culture the right organisms for good beer and d

Memoire sur l'etude optique. Signed presentation copy of the very rare offprint

      Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, 1857.
Lissajous Figures: Inscribed Presentation Copy of the Very Rare Offprint

Lissajous, Jules Antoine (1822-80). Paris: Mallet-Bachelier, 1857. 223 x 147 mm. Plain green wrappers c. 1857, front wrapper with author's signed presentation inscription: "A Monsieur Vincent de l'Institut, Souvenir affectueux de l'auteur, J. Lissajous." First signature a bit browned, title a little soiled, scattered foxing especially on tissue guards, otherwise fine. 2 sheets ms. calculations laid in, probably by the recipient of the offprint.

First Separate Edition. Lissajous's most comprehensive paper on his optical method of studying vibration, which gave rise to the widely used "Lissajous figures," defined mathematically as curves in the xy plane generated by the functions y = a sin (w1t + q1) and x = b sin (w2t + q2) where w1 and w2 are small integers.

"Like some other physicists of his time, Lissajous was interested in demonstrations of vibration that did not depend on the sense of hearing. . . . [His] most important research, first described in 1855, was the invention of a way to study acoustic vibrations by reflecting a light beam from the vibrating object onto a screen. . . . Lissajous produced two kinds of luminous curves. In the first kind, light is reflected from a tuning fork (to which a small mirror is attached), and then from a large mirror that is rotated rapidly. . . . The second kind of curve, named the 'Lissajous figure,' is more useful. The light beam is successively reflected from mirrors on two forks that are vibrating about mutually perpendicular axes. Persistence of vision causes various curves, whose shapes depend on the relative frequency, phase, and amplitude of the forks' vibrations. . . . If one of the forks is a standard, the form of the curve enables an estimate of the parameters of the other. As Lissajous said, they enable one to study beats (the ellipses rotate as the phase difference changes). 'Lissajous figures' have been, and still are, important in this respect" (DSB).

Lissajous figures are sometimes used in graphic design as logos. Examples include the logos of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (a = 1, b = 3, d = p/2) and the Lincoln Laboratory at MIT (a = 4, b = 3, d = 0).

Prior to modern computer graphics, Lissajous curves were typically generated using an oscilloscope. Two phase-shifted sinusoid inputs are applied to the oscilloscope in X-Y mode and the phase relationship between the signals is presented as a Lissajous figure. Lissajous curves can also be traced mechanically by means of a harmonograph.

A TOPOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT OF THE HUNDRED OF BOSMERE, in the County of Southampton. Including the parishes of Havant, Warblington and Hayling

London, Published by John Russell Smith, and Andrew Northcroft, 1857.FIRST EDITION 1856 / 1857, large 8vo, approximately 285 x 190 mm, 11¼ x 7¼ inches, extra engraved title page dated 1856 with printer's device, letterpress title page dated 1857, 22 plates: a full page map of the area with blue colouring, a mounted map of Hayling Island and 20 plates, 1 folding, 13 text illustrations of fish, birds and plants in the Appendix on the natural history of Hayling (20 pages), pages: vi, (2), 343 including Appendix and indexes, bound in quarter red morocco over red cloth sides, gilt raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments, gilt title and author, new endpapers. Engraved title page lightly foxed all over, slight pale foxing to margins of letterpress title, few pale fox spots to map, very occasional pale spotting to margins including those of plates, folding plate faintly browned, faint foxing to top image on plate at page 292. Most copies located are dated 1857 and do not have the engraved title page or the large map of Bosmere. Instead they have the map of Hayling Island as frontispiece, so listed on the plate list, and a plate of the NEW Vicarage House which is not on our list (we have only the Old Vicarage House). Our plate list does not call for a frontispiece and originally counted 21 plate titles on 21 pages but one of these titles was completely blacked out by the publisher and excised at page 267, leaving a narrow stub. This excised plate is not listed at all on the plate list of the copies without engraved title page. At page 293 and at 295 in our copy there are actually 2 plates not 1 as it seems on the list, making our total of 22. Our edition with the map of Bosmere and the engraved title page would seem more desirable, but further light needs shedding on the precedence of the two issues.

Pilliet, 1852-1854-, Bruxelles 1857 - Four parts text bound in one volume, with epilogue and atlas volumes, the latter oblong folio; 18 plates (some folding) in the text volumes, 50 plates (see note) in the atlas volume, excellent impressions of all the plates; the three volumes differently bound: recent quarter morocco with green boards (text); early crimson pebbled cloth, a little frayed at spine (epilogue); modern half green morocco over marbled boards (atlas). Rare complete set with the full complement of maps. First edition, with the full suite of lithographic plates, depicting any number of famous and important early maps, by a 'pioneer writer on cartography' (Tooley). This is one of the most important - and eccentric - early studies of the geography of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, and is only rarely seen complete with its folio atlas and the particularly uncommon epilogue volume of 1857. Lelewel's comprehensive intensive study of classical Greek, Latin and Arab sources, with each of the intricately engraved plates prepared by the author himself, includes the accounts of navigators, pilots and voyagers, and his scholarship makes it a significant source for cartography and the history of travel. The work is wide in scope, and whether Lelewel is discussing the foundations of modern Ptolemaic geography, the peregrinations of the Jewish scholar Benjamin of Tudele, or the great fourteenth-century Arab expeditions of Ibn Battuta, his synthesis of the field is magisterial. Lelewel was a Polish historian, educated at the Imperial University of Vilna. Although of Prussian descent, he became an ardent nationalist and his lectures on Polish history galvanised the country. One of the rebels of the November Uprising against the Russian authorities in 1830, he went into exile in Paris soon after the rebellion was suppressed, and was soon after forced to leave France for Brussels at the explicit request of the Russian Ambassador. A friend of Marx and Engels, he was a political agitator throughout his life. The plate count is complex, but the present example has the full complement. The folio atlas has 50 plates, as required: 49 are full page lithographs, while the remaining map (plate 47) is tipped on to the title-page, as instructed in the plate listing (this has caused some confusion among bibliographers; Howes, for example, lists "49" plates only). The question of the smaller plates for the text volumes has also been confused: Graesse calls for 12 plates, but the listing does not include the epilogue volume; Leclerc, who does notice the epilogue, calls for only 14 plates in total; Sabin does not list the smaller plates; and lastly, Howes lists 18 plates. This example with 18 & 50 plates, then, corresponds to the largest number of plates recorded by any of the bibliographers. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gavard 1855 - 1857.

        Aurora Leigh

London - Chapman and Hall, 1857. London - Chapman and Hall, 1857 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An earlyedition of this poem from Elizabeth Barrett Browning, first written in 1856. The poem is written in blank verse and encompasses nine books (the woman's number, the number of the prophetic books of the Sibyl). It is a first person narration, from the point of view of Aurora; its other heroine, Marian Erle, is an abused self-taught child of itinerant parents. The poem is set in Florence, Malvern, London, and Paris. She uses her knowledge of Hebrew and Greek, while also playing off modern novels, such as Corinne ou l'Italie by Anne Louise Germaine de Stal and the novels by George Sand. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (6 March 1806 29 June 1861) was one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian era. Her poetry was widely popular in both England and the United States during her lifetime. Condition: In a green cloth binding. Externally sound, though with some marks and some bumping. Wear to the head of the spine also. Front hinge is tender, and rear hinge has failed, becoming detached from the textblock edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright andmainly clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: GOOD ONLY..
