        Chapman's Sectional Map of Wisconsin

Dyer & Passmore (Milwaukee) and A.S. Barnes (New York), Milwaukee & New York 1857 - Rare issue of Chapman's map of Wisconsin and the first to depict the entire state. First issued in 1853, with successive editions in 1855 and 1856, Chapman's pocket map of Wisconsin depicted the southern half of the state, i.e. the area surveyed at the time of the map's publication. In 1857, the present issue was published, extending the map northward via a joined second sheet to depict the entire state. A publisher's advertisement from 1857 shows the map being offered for sale either as just the "south part" (at $.50) or the "whole state" ($1.00). Each county is individually coloured, with most in the north part of the state still oversized and empty of settlement. Townships and sections are also shown. Several Indian reservations are also laid down, including those of the Menominee and Oneida, and the many railroad lines in the state are identified. Silas Chapman produced several maps of the Midwest from the 1850s through the 1870s, including pocket and wall maps of Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. After partnering briefly with the printer Philetus C. Hale, he set up on his own in 1850: it was during this period that his most important maps were published. Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p. 1077 (1853 issue). Folding pocket map lithographed by F. Mayer & Co., full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Folds into original brown cloth-covered boards, blocked in blind on covers, lettered in gilt on upper cover. A lovely map, brightly coloured, in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Professor. A Tale.

London, Smith Elder and Co, 1857. - FIRST EDITION: 8vo., 2 volumes. pp.294 + 2 (advertisements); pp.258 + 16 (advertisements). Elegantly bound in recent tan calf over marbled boards, twin red and black title labels with light gilt to spines; gilt rule to boards. Edges a little dusty, internally spotless. A superb copy . Charlotte Bronte's first completed novel, but published posthumously in 1857. The 'Professor' of the title escapes from a humiliating clerkship in a Yorkshire mill to find work as a teacher in Belgium, where he falls in love with an impoverished student-teacher, regarded as the author's most realistic feminist heroine. This novel endures today as both a harbinger of Bronte's later fiction and a compelling read in its own right. Smith [7], Symington p.40. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Omphalos: an Attempt to Untie the Geological Divide

London: John Van Voorst, 1857. . First edition, later issue. 8vo. (xiv), 376, (6), pp. Publisher’s red cloth, gilt lettered to the spine which also bears a black flower device lower down, black decoration to upper board replicated in blind on lower cover. 56 woodcut illustrations in the text Expertly recased, the cloth covers a little marked and mottled, else very good. Scarce. Printed only once in an edition of 4,000 copies, the book met with general indifference and by 1869 only 600 copies had been sold. From Gosse’s correspondence with his publisher and printer it is clear that “a considerable number” were pulped, possibly as many as 3,000 copies. Freeman and Wertheimer describe five versions of the cloth binding, in differing colours and variously lettered to the spine. The latter amendment was made primarily to accommodate the reworded title “The Natural History of Creation”, an attempt to make the title more comprehensible to the wider public and thereby encourage more sales. A subsequent issue appeared with a cancel title leaf bearing the word “Creation” at its head.& Gosse sought to reconcile religion with science, creating his law of Prochronism to “harmonise the great antiquity of the earth which was demanded by the uniformitarian geologists with the short chronology which seemed to be required by a strict interpretation of the Bible.” The work was “ineffectual in gaining converts or in winning back defectors” (F & W), explaining its lack of commercial success, and the author’s arguments were ultimately overwhelmed by Darwinism and the weight of scientific evidence. Freeman and Wertheimer, 81e.

Napier directed the blame at the Admiralty, whilst most looked to him blaming "...his capricious humour or want of nerve, which - there were people who said - had been destroyed by too liberal and too long continued potations of Scotch whisky; while others referred to his own words: 'Most men of sixty are too old for dash and enterprise...         Hong Kong (Gambling Houses)

[London].: House of Commons.. 9 August1869.. 93pp. Original wrappers, quarto. String tie. Good copy. These voluminous papers on government-licensed gambling houses in Hong Kong in the 1860s contain the stirring exchanges between the colony's governor, Sir Richard Graves McDonnell, and the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Earl of Buckingham and Chandos. This was a subject of major importance, given the marked proclivity of the Chinese for gambling and the associated problems to which it gave rise for the prevention of crime and the good government of the Colony. McDonnell's despatches reveal an able and strong-minded governor who did not agree with the view being taken by the Colonial Office of this subject, which, he felt, was being unduly influenced by the English lobby, spear-headed by the influential Standing Committee of the Social Science Association at the instigation of two disgruntled Hong Kong personalities, the Colony's former Attorney-General, T. Chisholm Anstey, and Edward Murrow, the editor of a Hong Kong newspaper. Both these men had been involved in the acrimonious public disputes following allegations of questionable behaviour made on each other by senior officials in the Colony of the late 1850s. Macdonnell considered that they were unduly biased, and should not be allowed to injure the case for continuing the system of licensing gambling houses which was, in his view, the lesser of two evils, and brought some tangible benefits to the maintenance of law and order. [The National Association for the Promotion of Social Science (NAPSS), often known as the Social Science Association, was a British reformist group founded in 1857 by Lord Brougham. It pursued topics in public health, industrial relations, penal reform, and female education. It was in existence for about 30 years, being dissolved in 1886: from Wikipedia]. .

Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa

London - John Murray 1857 - A first edition of one of the most famous exploration books in history, by the medical missionary and explorer, David Livingstone. Secondimpression with eight pages of the original publishers' advertisements dated November 1st 1857. Complete with twenty-seven plates, four of which are folding, and two maps- one that is tucked into a compartment to the rear pastedown. Perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the late 19th century in Victorian Britain, Livingstone had a mythic status, which operated on a number of interconnected levels: that of Protestant missionary martyr, that of working-class rags to riches inspirational story, that of scientific investigator and explorer, that of imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial empire. The title, Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, evokes earlier accounts of southern Africa, notably by Philip and Moffat, but Livingstone's book stands out from these by reason of its intellectual breadth. . . When he came to write his book, he enriched a stirring narrative, told in conversational style, with insights acquired by informed eyes and ears, as well as with shafts of caustic humour -DNB. Condition: Rebacked in a cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, light rubbing to extremities and small marks to the front board. Internally, firmly bound and bright with instances of light spotting throughout. Copperplate ink signature to the title page. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, Franklin Square,. 1857. 12mo, pp. [i-v] vi-viii [ix] x-xiv [15] 16-365 [366: blank] [367]-371: appendix [372 blank], flyleaves at front and rear,. original decorated brown cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, yellow coated endpapers.. As is often the case with books from Lovecraft's library, the. physical condition is rather poor. Shallow chipping to cloth at spine. ends, small chip from spine near title lettering, several signatures. strengthened. (#129190). First edition. Formerly, H. P. Lovecraft's copy, signed "H. P. Lovecraft" and dated "1925" on front free endpaper; above this is the note, in HPL's hand, "From Samuel Loveman, Esq." and, opposite, on the front paste-down, is written out in the same hand the book's title and author. One of the classics of drug literature, by an interesting figure of mid-nineteenth- century Bohemian New York, his first book, published anonymously when he was 21. Sam Loveman, a minor turn-of-the-century poet who became a NYC bookseller, was a longtime friend of Lovecraft and also a friend of Hart Crane. The double association here adds a special perspective on the book. Loveman was born on the thirtieth anniversary of its publication. Lovecraft died on its eightieth. In a 1927 letter to Bernard Austin Dwyer, HPL notes proudly his possession of this special copy of a special book. "Have I read Fitzhugh Ludlow's Hasheesh-Eater? Why, Sir, I possess it upon mine own shelves; and wou'd not part with it for any inducement whatever! I ... have frequently reread those phantasmagoria of exotic colour, which proved more of a stimulant to my own fancy than any vegetable alkaloid ever grown and distilled ... The reeling panoramas out of space and time have an unmistakable tinge of authenticity, and even the metaphysical speculations were far from arid." Later, in the same letter, he acknowledges the gulf between his politics and Loveman's, while affirming their friendship. "Great Scott -- if Loveman and I judged each other by our ideas, we'd have long ago suffered the fate of the Kilkennny cats. According to my social and political theories, he ought to be shot or in gaol, whilst according to his, I ought to be guillotined! But since we deal in art and not in ideas, we get along with the utmost cordiality" (Selected Letters, II, pp. 118-19). Some years after Lovecraft's death, in the bitter context of the Holocaust, Loveman felt unable to look the other way at HPL's frequently-voiced anti-Semitic views (however cordial he may have been in person with Jewish friends), and burnt all of his letters, a not insignificant holocaust of his own, leaving this as one of the few testimonials to their friendship. Their second issue is without six of the unpaged plates and port. and with a new appendix [48] at the end. We have three copies and all three are different from TPLís two. After page 218pp the variations seem occur., Classic work aimed at the woman emigrating from Britain to Canada, based upon the experiences of Traill, who by this point had spent over 25 years in 'the backwoods of Canada'. The work provides practical advice on most aspects of emigration, from choosing a ship from Britain, and what luggage to bring, to the finer points of furnishing a log cabin (including how to make an easy-chair from a flour barrel) and the perils of alcohol. The practical advice for the pioneer includes tips on gardening (for food), how to prevent your home burning down, or how to handle a fire if it does arise including those who don't have water to spare ("Women, yes, weak women and children have battled against a wall of advancing fire, and with hoes and other instruments have kept it back till help could be obtained"). It also recommends that every women become an expert at knitting, not only for its use in providing clothing, but in increasing the attractiveness of the unmarried woman ("Every young woman is prized in this country according to her usefulness; and a thriving young settler will rather marry a clever, industrious girl, who has the reputation for being a good spinner and knitter, than one who has nothing but a pretty face to recommend her").There are also several recipes to be made from many readily available food sources, including fruit, vegetables and meats.A fascinating look at the era of expansion in North America, what was expected of the new settlers, and life in the unsettled regions of Canada. A bit of minor and all but inevitable spotting to the plates, a bit more so to the frontis but still less then is common. FIRST EDITION WITH EARLIEST ISSUE POINTS IN A HANDSOME BINDING OF UNCOMMON PLUM-BROWN CALF. Little Dorrit was published in 19 monthly installments, each two illustrations by Phiz. Each installment cost a shilling, with the exception of the last, a double issue, which cost two shillings. It is a work of satire on the shortcomings of the government and society of the period.<br>Much of Dickens&#39; ire is focused upon the institutions of debtors&#39; prisons&#151;in which people who owed money were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. The representative prison in this case is the Marshalsea where the author&#39;s own father had been imprisoned.
