Colonies and Colonization. A Lecture... [with] A Letter to His Excellency Colonel Thomas Gore Browne

Auckland: Phillip Kunst, 1857. Two octavo pamphlets, 27 & 28 pp. respectively; both in excellent condition, stitch-sewn as issued, housed in a red quarter morocco box by Sangorski. Two rare Busby pamphlets. Two separately-issued pamphlets in fine original condition. Any works by Busby are of course of some significance, and these New Zealand printed works are known to be quite scarce. James Busby emigrated to New South Wales in 1824 where he pioneered Australian winemaking and published three detailed treatises on the subject. Increasing contact between Europeans and Maoris during the 1820s led to a spate of violence and lawlessness, and Busby was dispatched to New Zealand as the Official Resident in April 1833 with instructions to report to Sir Richard Bourke, the Governor of New South Wales. His duties included protecting lawful British settlers, detaining escaped convicts and curbing abuse of the Maori by Europeans. Through his early and dedicated involvement, Busby became a key figure in the early government in New Zealand. The first and perhaps more interesting work is a lecture Busby delivered in Auckland on the future of New Zealand. In the lecture, Busby openly draws on his earlier experience in New South Wales, discussing for example the importation of sheep, the growing of hops (not grapes! Busby even notes that he himself grew a small plantation of hops in Sydney 30 years earlier), the importance of flax, the "floating palaces" on board which new emigrants sail, and the sale of land. The second prints Busby's quasi-official thoughts on "responsible government" addressed to the serving Governor, and with broad-ranging notice of Wakefield, George Grey, Gladstone and the Bank of New South Wales.

        Life of George Washington

New York, G. P. Putnam & Co.,, 1857–9. 5 volumes, large octavo (265 × 176 mm) Finely bound c.1900 in crimson crushed morocco by Affolter, titles gilt to spines, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments, French fillet gilt to the boards, top edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. 118 engraved plates and maps, numerous wood-cut illustrations to the text, extra illustrated with 130 etched, lithographed and photographic plates, some of them eighteenth-century. Bookplates of James W. Ellsworth, coal-mining magnate, banker and numismatist to the front pastedowns, subsequent plate of M. & J. Moore, and book label of Abel E. Berland to the front free endpapers. Three bookplates to front pastedowns and endpapers in each volume, light restoration to endpapers and front fly-leaf, minor repair to hinges, overall a handsome set in excellent condition. First illustrated edition, "issued in [68] semi-monthly paper-covered parts." (BAL) Dates on the typographical and engraved half-titles vary from the listing provided by Blanck; "The publication history of this work is involved." Sabin suggests that "to meet the wishes of the "Illustrators", one hundred and ten copies were put forth" with portraits and plates, it can be presumed that by this he means Grangerizers and this set has been extensively extra-illustrated by the addition of numerous eighteenth- and nineteenth-century plates and portraits. Irving had begun work on this biography of his namesake - "the stupendous life of Washington …this boyhood impulse" (DAB) - in 1825, but completed the last volume just months before his death, it has always been "a popular book; being Irving it could not be otherwise." (Sabin) An attractive set.

Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa; Including a sketch of sixteen years' residence in the interior of Africa

London: John Murray, 1857. Large octavo, engraved portrait and 23 plates (including folding frontispiece view), two folding maps by Arrowsmith (one in pocket at rear), numerous wood engraved illustrations through the text; a very good copy in original brown cloth. Unequalled contribution to African geography. The most famous account of African exploration, recording three years spent in the wilderness between 1853-1856. 'Livingstone, one of the great characters of the nineteenth century, embodying all the virtues of the Victorian age, is often remembered more for his qualities as a man than for his achievements as an explorer. Born with no social advantages, it was his courage and boldness of conception, his deep religious feelings and his great powers of endurance that carried him through the trials and hardships of a dedicated life and eventually gained him the honour of burial in Westminster Abbey' ({i Printing and the Mind of Man}, 341). This is a later issue of the first edition, well preserved in the original publisher's cloth with chalked endpapers and folding Arrowsmith map in a sleeve at the rear.

Chapman and Hall, 1857 - Small stain to upper cover, otherwise a very nice copy. With the armorial bookplate, shelf-label and marks of Nathaniel Barton Wise pp.90-91; Barnes A11; Tinker 402 Described by the author as "the most mature of my works, the one into which my highest convictions of work and art have entered". "The poem is full of beauty from the first page to the last. The opening scenes in Italy, the impression of light, of silence, the beautiful Italian mother, the austere father with his open books, the death of the mother, who lies laid out for burial in her red silk dress, the epitaph, ‘Weep for an infant too young to weep much, when death removed this mother;’ Aurora's journey to her father’s old home, her lonely terror of England, the slow yielding of her nature to its silent beauty, her friendship with her cousin, Romany Leigh, their saddening, widening knowledge of the burden and sorrow of the life around, and the way this knowledge influences both their fates, all is described with that irresistible fervour which is the translation of the essence of things into words – of their very soul into common life." Chapman's Sectional Map of Wisconsin

Dyer & Passmore (Milwaukee) and A.S. Barnes (New York), Milwaukee & New York 1857 - Rare issue of Chapman's map of Wisconsin and the first to depict the entire state. First issued in 1853, with successive editions in 1855 and 1856, Chapman's pocket map of Wisconsin depicted the southern half of the state, i.e. the area surveyed at the time of the map's publication. In 1857, the present issue was published, extending the map northward via a joined second sheet to depict the entire state. A publisher's advertisement from 1857 shows the map being offered for sale either as just the "south part" (at $.50) or the "whole state" ($1.00). Each county is individually coloured, with most in the north part of the state still oversized and empty of settlement. Townships and sections are also shown. Several Indian reservations are also laid down, including those of the Menominee and Oneida, and the many railroad lines in the state are identified. Silas Chapman produced several maps of the Midwest from the 1850s through the 1870s, including pocket and wall maps of Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. After partnering briefly with the printer Philetus C. Hale, he set up on his own in 1850: it was during this period that his most important maps were published. Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p. 1077 (1853 issue). Folding pocket map lithographed by F. Mayer & Co., full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Folds into original brown cloth-covered boards, blocked in blind on covers, lettered in gilt on upper cover. A lovely map, brightly coloured, in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Elegantly bound in recent tan calf over marbled boards, twin red and black title labels with light gilt to spines; gilt rule to boards. Edges a little dusty, internally spotless. A superb copy . Charlotte Bronte's first completed novel, but published posthumously in 1857. The 'Professor' of the title escapes from a humiliating clerkship in a Yorkshire mill to find work as a teacher in Belgium, where he falls in love with an impoverished student-teacher, regarded as the author's most realistic feminist heroine. This novel endures today as both a harbinger of Bronte's later fiction and a compelling read in its own right. Smith [7], Symington p.40. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa: Being a Journal of an Expedition Undertaken Under the Auspices of H.B.M.'s Government, in the Years 1849-1855.

London: Longman Brown Green Longmans and Roberts -58 1857 - First English edition. Five volumes. 8vo. Contemporary tan full calf, spines with raised bands, original red title labels with sympathetically renewed green author and volume labels, loss of gilt to the other compartments, all edges and endpapers marbled. Gift inscription to the half title of volume I to Lady Florence Norman from George Taubman Goldie with a later inscription in her son Ronald's hand beneath stating that "'These volumes Belonged to [Goldie] founder of Nigeria. It was through reading these, as he told me, that his attention was first directed to Africa". A small nick to the title label of volume I, neat repairs to the joints of each volume, a very good set. 60 lithographed plates, 15 folding maps and 1 folding woodcut plan plus further woodcuts in the text. George Taubman Goldie (1846-1925) was an unconventional character who by circumstance and opportunity developed British commercial and political interests in the Niger region in the 1870s and 1880s. In the scramble for land being contested with the French, Goldie sought and gained chartered status from the British Government for his enterprises, initially as the National African Company and subsequently as the Royal Niger Company. Thus he secured British rule in the area and, for a time, a near commercial monopoly for his company. Goldie's earlier life was somewhat more romantic. After leaving military service he moved to Egypt and on falling in love with an Arab woman he settled in Sudan for several years. At this time he "read most of what was written about the savanna belt of Muslim territory stretching across to the Atlantic" (ODNB), presumably including this important work. Abbey, Travel, 274.

Omphalos: an Attempt to Untie the Geological Divide

London: John Van Voorst, 1857. . First edition, later issue. 8vo. (xiv), 376, (6), pp. Publisher’s red cloth, gilt lettered to the spine which also bears a black flower device lower down, black decoration to upper board replicated in blind on lower cover. 56 woodcut illustrations in the text Expertly recased, the cloth covers a little marked and mottled, else very good. Scarce. Printed only once in an edition of 4,000 copies, the book met with general indifference and by 1869 only 600 copies had been sold. From Gosse’s correspondence with his publisher and printer it is clear that “a considerable number” were pulped, possibly as many as 3,000 copies. Freeman and Wertheimer describe five versions of the cloth binding, in differing colours and variously lettered to the spine. The latter amendment was made primarily to accommodate the reworded title “The Natural History of Creation”, an attempt to make the title more comprehensible to the wider public and thereby encourage more sales. A subsequent issue appeared with a cancel title leaf bearing the word “Creation” at its head.& Gosse sought to reconcile religion with science, creating his law of Prochronism to “harmonise the great antiquity of the earth which was demanded by the uniformitarian geologists with the short chronology which seemed to be required by a strict interpretation of the Bible.” The work was “ineffectual in gaining converts or in winning back defectors” (F & W), explaining its lack of commercial success, and the author’s arguments were ultimately overwhelmed by Darwinism and the weight of scientific evidence. Freeman and Wertheimer, 81e.

(33 x 23½ inches) Very good condition; slight tears in the top and bottom of centrefold, not affecting the image. These include all regions of Spain and Portugal as well as Baleares. The actual map has towns, ports and railways marked on it. Alexandre Vuillemin (1812-1880) was a cartographer and a book editor based in Paris. Despite a prolific cartographic career, much of Vuillemin's life is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that his studied under the prominent French Auguste Henri Dufour (1798-1865). Vuillemin's most important work is his detailed, highly decorative large format Atlas de Géographie Commerciale et Industrielle, which this map is a part of.

The History of the Baltic Campaign of 1854

London, Richard Bentley, , 1857. From Documents and other Materials furnished by... Edited by G. Butler Earp. Octavo, original Navy blue wavy-grained cloth with title gilt to the spine, blind panels to the boards and Admiralty fouled anchor device gilt to the upper board. Errata slip tipped in at the title page. Armorial bookplate Light shelf-wear, very mild foxing, mainly at the fore-edge, front hinge just a touch cracked, but overall an exceptionally nice copy. First edition. Napier's apologia for the Naval conduct of the Crimean War. Napier directed the blame at the Admiralty, whilst most looked to him blaming "...his capricious humour or want of nerve, which - there were people who said - had been destroyed by too liberal and too long continued potations of Scotch whisky; while others referred to his own words: 'Most men of sixty are too old for dash and enterprise... When a man's body begins to shake, the mind follows, and he is always the last to find out.'" (DNB) A very sharp copy, uncommon thus.
