Original brown cloth with printed paper label (a bit rubbed). From the distinguished library of Thomas W. Streeter, his bookplate to the front pastedown. With the label of J.J. LeCount Bookbinder San Francisco on front pastedown. "BY FAR THE MOST COMPLETE AND ACCURATE MAP OF CALIFORNIA" (Wheat) First edition. Important map of California in first edition, with very distinguished provenance. Noted in California 49 as "the first reasonably accurate and complete map of the state. Towns, great and small, county boundaries, stage and wagon roads, including a few that traverse the Sierra Nevada, and California's first railroad from Sacramento to Folsom appear. None of the errors found on Eddy's map are present. Lake Tahoe. is shown at its correct location." Warren Heckrotte notes that "This is the Streeter-Grabhorn copy and the copy that Wheat says he used for making his description in Maps of the California Gold Region. The map is rare." "In 1857 the state of knowledge of Sierra Nevada geography was outlined in the most detailed map of California to date, a map prepared by civil engineer, surveyor, architect, and artist George H. Goddard. Goddard was born in Bristol, England, and was educated at Oxford. He, like many others, was drawn to California by the prospect of making his fortune in the gold rush. In 1850, at the age of 33, he sailed to California by way of Cape Horn. The journey from Plymouth to San Francisco, with an eight-day stopover in the Falkland Islands before rounding the Horn, took 180 days. His wife and two children remained in Europe until 1858, when the family was finally reunited. Within a year after their arrival in California a third child was born. "Goddard went to the goldfields and became a partner in a drugstore in Columbia, but by 1853 he had begun a career as a surveyor. He also maintained a professional interest in architecture, and began a serious interest in landscape painting. His first expedition was a survey of a possible railroad route over the Sierra at Sonora Pass, a route already traversed by a wagon road. The work led Goddard to other mapping excursions around the state. All the while he took copious notes and measurements that would help him later in compiling the California map. "In 1855, working for the California Surveyor General, he made a reconnaissance survey of the route over Carson Pass, and also surveyed the boundary between California and Utah Territory (in what is now western Nevada). For this work Goddard carried altitude and azimuth transits and chronometers, so that he could accurately determine by astronomical observations the latitude and longitude of important survey stations. When location and circumstance permitted, he checked the chronometers against time signals received on newly erected telegraph lines "The Goddard map of the state of California, published in 1857 by order of the Surveyor General of California [as here], is based partly on the Fremont map of 1848, though many details have been added and other improvements have been made. The map (Goddard, 1857) shows no trails crossing the Sierra in the 200-mile span of the range crest from Sonora Pass, north of Yosemite, to Walker Pass, 50 miles south of Owens Lake. No habitation is shown in Owens Valley. The U.S. Army's Fort Independence is not shown; it was established five years later, on July 4, 1862, as a result of skirmishes between settlers and Indians. The main settlement in the Central Valley of California adjacent to the parks area was Visalia (spelled 'Visaija' on the map). Fresno, Bakersfield, and Merced had not yet been settled. The map shows Tulare Lake to be about 40 miles long, whereas on the Fremont map [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Annals of the Poor.

Ryde Isle of Wight London: Henry Vizetelly Printer and Engraver. Published by H. R. Holloway no date ? 1857 - Small 8vo, 127 x 77 mms., pp. xvi [xvii dedication to William Wilberforce, xviii blank], 210 [211 - 212 blank], including half-title, engraved frontispiece and engraved title-page before printed title-page. BOUND WITH: H. (B.): A Companion to the Annals of the Poor. By H. B. Hyde: H. R. Holloway, [no date]. 8vo, 127 x 77 mms., pp. [9] - 61 [62 blank], with separate registration and pagination. 2 volumes in 1, bound in contemporary embossed cloth, blocked in gilt on spine; shaken in casing, front hinge cracked and tender, front joint snagged, top of spine chipped and worn. Inscribed horizontally on the recto of the front free end-paer, "To Mary/ With Cousin Alex's best love/ January 6th 1857." The evangelical Church of England clergyman, Richmond Legh (1772 - 1827) collected the stories in Annals of the Poor while he was living on the Isle of Wight and published them in the Christian Guardian between 1809 and 1814; the first collected edition was published in 1814 by the Religious Tract Society. I have not been able to identify "H. B.," who provides a memoir of the life of Legh Richmond in Annals; in his Preface to A Companion to the Annals of the Poor, he doesn't disclose any further information, saying only that "The following Appendix has been written to guide the pious or the curious pilgrim to scenes which the Rev. Legh Richmond has sanctified by rendering them subservient to the cause of holiness, and to afford such additional information as seem desirable to the inquiring way-farer, and to collect within a convenient and accessible space such matter as may tend to elucidate the 'Annals of the Poor.'" I have not located a separately-printed copy of the Companion. The Bodleian Library has a copy printed in Ryde in 1860, but the present copy's inscription confirms a publication earlier than 1857. Otherwise, I have not been able to locate any copy of this edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Preliminary report of the Decimal Coinage Commissioners>. London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1857. folio, xv + (1) + 365 + (3)pp. 2. Final report of the Decimal Coinage Commissioners>. London: Eyre and Spottiswoode. 1859. folio, 115 + (1)pp. 3.Appendix to the final report of the Decimal Coinage Commissioners>. London: Eyre and Spottiswoode. 1859. folio, 248pp. 4. Decimal coinage. Return to an Order of the Honourable The House of Commons, dated 23 March 1859; - for, A copy 'of the minutes of the proceedings, from the 1st day of May 1857, of the Commissioners to inquire into the subject of decimal coinage>. [London, 30 March 1859]. folio, 8 + (2)pp., with caption and docket titles. 5. Questions communicated by Lord Overstone to the Decimal Coinage Commissioners>. London: Eyre and Spottiswoode. 1857. folio, 187 + (1)pp. See Ford & Ford (Select British Parliamentary Papers 1833-1899>) p.28. King (Cat. of Parliamentary Papers 1801-1900>) 4995 and 4996. The Royal Commission on decimal coinage was dominated by Lord Overstone (Samuel Jones Lloyd) and by J.G. Hubbard (later Lord Addington), both of whom were opposed to adopting a decimal currency, in spite of the powerful and sustained case promoted by such active promoters as Sir John Bowring, Sir William Brown and Professor De Morgan. Palgrave in fact interestingly observes that by the appointment of the commission the subject was effectively kicked into the long grass. '...... but really with the view of again strangling the reform, the government agreed to appoint a royal commission, which consisted, in the result, of three men being appointed commissioners who were bitter enemies to any change, two of them, Lord Overstone and Mr. Hubbard (afterwards Lord Addington) being, to our certain knowledge, given to saying that they had made their money, as bankers and merchants, under the old system, and that as that was good in the past, it would be good enough in the future. The inevitable result of the commission, notwithstanding they had the testimony of men of advanced scientific intellect, and of high commercial reputation, before them in favour of the decimal system of coinage, and especially of the pound and mil scheme, was unfavourable. The royal commission arrived at twelve, on the whole, antagonistic resolutions'. [Palgrave, Dictionary of Political Economy>, I, p.517].

Augusta, ME: Stevens & Blaine, 1857. Paperback. 8vo. Tan printed wrappers. 22pp. Very good. Outer wrappers (only) a bit age toned. A tight and quite handsome first edition of the gubernatorial inaugural address of Abraham Lincoln's future vice president. Hamlin (1809-91) had just switched from the Democratic to the Republican party the year before he was elected Maine's 26th governor -- but after taking the oath of office on the day of this speech -- 8 January 1857 -- he resigned after only a month and a half, for the U.S. Senate seat he had held since 1848 and had officially left the day before giving this speech unexpectantly became vacant. He served there until 1861 when he became the vice president. Choice association copy, bearing the pencilled old-age signature near top of front wrapper of MARTIN VAN BUREN (1782-1862), eighth president of the United States (1837-41).         Pictures of slavery in church and state : including personal reminiscences, biographical sketches, anecdotes, etc. : with an appendix containing the views of John Wesley and Richard Watson on slavery

Published by the Author, 1857-01-01. 3rd. Hardcover. Acceptable. 418, 8 p.; 19 cm. Bound in publisher's cloth. Tear to spine cloth, with loss to head of spine cloth. Hardcover. Internal binding sound. Pages generally clean and unmarked. In this book Rev. Long discusses slavery in the South, the Methodist Church and slavery, abolitionism, Uncle Tom's Cabin, slavery and infidelity, the slave trade, Liberia, negro insurrections, mob law, slavery and Mormonism, free colored people, slavery and white labor, the southern aristocracy and poor whites of the south, the role of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, etc. Quite an interesting book written from the perspective of a white Marylander whose family owned slaves and subsequently rejected the practice. Initially many of these topics were covered by the author in a series of pamphlets. The Methodist Church was a strong anti-slavery force in antebellum America. <br> Ink stamp facsimile signature of W.E.B DuBois (from his library.) Numerous stamps of William H. Sheppard. William H. Sheppard was an important African American figure who was one of the first to publicize atrocities in the Congo Free State. Library book plate of B.W. Arnett, Wilberforce, Ohio. B.W. Arnett was a noted African American Methodist minister. He was the first black man to serve as a foreman of an all-white jury. He served on the Ohio State Legislature and there repealed the Black Laws of Ohio. Du Bois was a frequent correspondent with Arnett. After Arnett died Du Bois purchased Arnett's library for $50 in 1909. (See Special Collections, UMass Amherst, mums312-b001-i111 for a letter from Mary Arnett to Du Bois concerning his purchase of Arnett's library.) UMass (mums312-b001-i110) has an additional letter from 1903 between Du Bois and Arnett where Du Bois requests information about the history of the AME church and discusses Arnett's library. This book has a wealth of information about the early AME church and probably part of the books these leaders corresponded about. It is fascinating that at least three significant figures in the Civil Rights movement were associated with this copy. Blockson Collection, 9842.

Chapman's Sectional Map of Wisconsin

Milwaukee & New York: Dyer & Passmore (Milwaukee) and A.S. Barnes (New York), 1857. Folding pocket map lithographed by F. Mayer & Co., full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Folds into original brown cloth-covered boards, blocked in blind on covers, lettered in gilt on upper cover. A lovely map, brightly coloured, in very good condition. Rare issue of Chapman's map of Wisconsin and the first to depict the entire state. First issued in 1853, with successive editions in 1855 and 1856, Chapman's pocket map of Wisconsin depicted the southern half of the state, i.e. the area surveyed at the time of the map's publication. In 1857, the present issue was published, extending the map northward via a joined second sheet to depict the entire state. A publisher's advertisement from 1857 shows the map being offered for sale either as just the "south part" (at $.50) or the "whole state" ($1.00). Each county is individually coloured, with most in the north part of the state still oversized and empty of settlement. Townships and sections are also shown. Several Indian reservations are also laid down, including those of the Menominee and Oneida, and the many railroad lines in the state are identified. Silas Chapman produced several maps of the Midwest from the 1850s through the 1870s, including pocket and wall maps of Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. After partnering briefly with the printer Philetus C. Hale, he set up on his own in 1850: it was during this period that his most important maps were published. A HORIZONTAL PILGRIMS WALKING MAP OF ALL JAPAN This map was essentially used by pilgrims who walked from town to town on the roads performing their religious obligation. Showing great detail of the roads, villages, rivers, distance chart, key to shrines, temples, castles, inns, tea shops, sights &c. This map was actually designed with the pilgrim pedestrian in mind, who while walking, could refer to this and keep neatly tucked into his Obi sash or Kimono sleeve for quick reference. * This map is a narrow and very long accordion folded format which segments of the county with each fold. With directional compass, key to distances in Ri [Japanese miles], red for small towns, yellow for larger towns, and black for Kuni [now prefectures], shows ships in the waters, and shipping lanes, key to symbols. * A complete map of all Japan, from Hokkaido in the North, down to Nagasaki and the Southern islands. Excellent for display and framing. * These maps are commonly called "Dochu" or "Itinerary Maps." A very charming work, nicely illustrated with pastel colors. Actually carried by pilgrims on holy journeys visiting Shinto and Buddhist shrines. * REFERENCE: M.         The Rose Garden. Nuneham, The Seat of G.G. Harcourt Esqre. M.P.

London: Published by T. McLean, 1857. Colour-printed lithograph, heightened with touches of gum arabic. Very good condition apart from some light foxing. Top of sheet trimmed practically to image. A stunning view of the rose garden at Nuneham Park, from the "The Gardens of England." Published in 1857, The Gardens of England was a series of 24 plates with accompanying text depicting the diverse luxuriant gardens of various distinguished English mansions. The mid-nineteenth century was a period during which the traditional aesthetics of garden design underwent a significant change in England, as innovative ideas and concepts were being continually introduced and explored. Brooke's publication embodies the eclectic nature of Victorian garden design and constitutes an important visual survey of the varied styles that were popular among the wealthy and fashionable. Situated near Oxford, Nuneham Park was the chief residence of the First Earl Harcourt, nobleman, Privy Councillor, and courtier of George III. The lavish Palladian Villa was built in 1756, and the expansive landscaped park, with its scenic vistas and classical gardens, was constructed in the 1760s according to the Earl's designs. The eminent English landscape designer Lancelot "Capability" Brown enhanced the grounds in his signature "serpentine" style, and William Mason designed its various flower gardens. Little is known about E. Adveno Brooke, other than that he exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution between 1853 and 1864 and his most significant publication was The Gardens of England . Cf. Abbey, Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland 392; cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , Vol. 2, p. 842.

[illisible]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
