Bel exemplaire.

Cornelius Wendell, 1857. GOOD PLUS IN FINE CUSTOM CLAMSHELL CASE. From the Nineteenth Volume of Howard's Reports. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, published simultaneously with its inclusion in the Supreme Court reports. The decision was handed down on March 6th, 1857. NOTE: The Supreme Court misspelled John Sanford's name in the decision and it has frequently been handed down incorrectly spelled as Sandford. One of the landmark cases in American jurisprudence. Dred Scott, a slave, sued to obtain his freedom on the grounds that he resided in the free Wisconsin territory. The Supreme Court ruled that he was not a citizen and declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional. The gist of that decision ruled "that people of African descent brought into the United States and held as slaves (or their descendants) whether or not they were slaves) were not protected by the United States Constitution and could never be citizens." (Wkpd). "It is safe to say that no case that ever came before an Anglo-Saxon tribunal was fraught with more momentous consequences and that no judge has ever been more bitterly assailed than was (Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Brooke) Taney for his opinion in this case..." William Draper Lewis IV, 149-150. Sabin 3324. Some wear and inked markings, fraying and tidelines to paper wraps and first few leaves. Inscription on rear panel dated May 20th (145th), which is no doubt 1857 -- just ten weeks after the actual decision was made. Custom chocolate-brown plush-lined hard clamshell case. Handsome red leather label to spine (THE DRED SCOTT CASE), with gilt lettering, highlights and 1857 date. 239 pp. All pages present, but lacks the green paper covers originally issued with this first, separate edition.

Humphreys, printed in colours and finished by hand, contemporary green half morocco gilt, all edges gilt, spines faded, an excellent set, the paltes clean and fresh. David Livingstone (1813-1873) "became a missionary and was sent to South Africa by the London Missionary Society in 1840. From then onwards his life was devoted to the exploration of central Africa. Although a missionary he regarded himself more as a pioneer explorer opening up the country for others. Livingstone's services to African geography during thirty years are almost unequalled; he covered about a third of the continent from the Cape to the Equator and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. He made three great expeditions; in 1853-6 (described in this book), 1858-64 and 1865-73, of which the first and third are the most important. During these years he explored vast regions of central Africa, many of which had never been seen by white men before. Hie first discovered the Zambesi River at Secheke and followed it northwards, eventually reaching the west coast of Africa at Luanda, Angola, and the east coast at Quelimane, Mozambique. In 1855 he discovered the great falls of the Zambesi and named them the Victoria Falls. He explored the Zambesi, Shire and Ruyuma rivers and found the salt lake Chilwa and Lake Nyasa The geographical results of his journeys were of supreme importance, and made it possible to fill in great stretches of the maps of Central Africa which hitherto had been blank" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Mit beiliegendem Kaufbeleg von Blackwells (Oxford), datiert 25.9.73. Ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar mit Signaturschild am Rücken, Stempel und montierter Benutzungsordnung.       Bonn, 3. XI. 1857. 4 S., 4°. [An den österr. Chemiker u. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Nöggerath, Schrötter, Mineralogie, Geologie, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Album of Original Pen-and-Ink Drawings by a Student at the École Impériale d'Arts et Métiers d'Aix

probably 1857-1860, Aix-en-Provence - Marbled paper over boards, backed in red sheep, gilt-stamped lettering in spine compartments; 311 x 230 mm; contains 70 double-page pen-and-ink drawings (open, they measure 311 x 445 mm), some enhanced with ink wash or watercolor, each with the artist's name and the professor's signatures (4 signatures in all). Boards and spine rubbed and scuffed; top corner of front board lacking. Contents are very near fine -- just some light foxing and a few small spots of soiling. Highly skilled technical drawings by Michel Clement, a student at the École Impériale d'Arts et Métiers d'Aix. The period of training was set at three years, with the first year devoted to arithmetic, geometry and drawing; the second year to descriptive geometry, trigonometry and mechanical drawing (of both stationary and moving parts); and the third year to industrial mechanics and advanced drafting techniques. This album affords a fascinating glimpse into the type and extent of the skills required of graduates of French technical schools in the mid-19th century. The course in design (cours de dessins) is structured, and presented here, in 4 sections: Troisieme division, premiere annee; deuxieme division (these drawings dated 1858-1859); deuxieme annee; and premiere division. The drawings include ornements (6), architecture (6), lavis (4), lever a l'equerre (1), echelles (1), epures (5), boulons et rivets (2), assemblages (1), geometrie descriptive (22), cinematique (5), organes de machine (3), topographie (2), machine outil (1), engrenages (6), machine a vapeur (1), treuil (1), machine a vapeur (2), hydraulique (1).
