Master’s Journal of Voyages made in the Clipper Ship Florence, 1857-1858 Captain Phillip Dumaresq

6/25/16. 4to. 183 pages of manuscript entries. The "Florence" was fresh off the ways when this journal was written, having been launched in east Boston in 1856. Her early years represent a conjunction of some of the great names in American maritime history. She was built by the famed Samuel Hall for John Murray Forbes and Robert Bennett Forbes, the legendary brothers who’d made their millions in the China trade. Her master, Philip Dumaresq, was a personal friend of the Forbeses; he’d become famous as a captain of the Romance of the Seas and other outstanding clippers, and had worked for the brothers in the opium trade. He was nearly at the end of his career, but the unexpected deaths of his wife and daughter caused him to invest with the Forbes brothers in the "Florence" in hopes of diverting himself from grief. He supervised her building and rigging, and then took command of her. This log begins with the return portion of her first voyage - from Shanghai to New York in 1856-7. It continues with voyages from New York to Hong Kong in 1857, Hong Kong to Shanghai, 1857, and Shanghai to New York, 1858. It is written in Dumaresq’s hand, and it opens with his careful notes on ballasting and loading his new ship, and on port events in Shanghai. He primarily records in detail his sail handling and navigation. Fairburn has this to say about Dumaresq and his "Florence": “Dumaresq was a courageous driver with an uncanny sense in regard to putting on and taking in canvas. Other skippers... marvelled at ‘the foolhardy way Dumaresq piled on canvas...’ but there was nothing foolhardy about Dumaresq... An examination of the logs of the Florence... shows that he drove his medium-full Florence at the speed of the sharp ended extreme clippers... Dumaresq said, ‘Why not? I have a real ship with something to her under me, and everything above deck is right and I know it will stand.’” - Fairburn p. 3864. A truly wonderful piece of Americana. Clean and legible in securely bound journal housed in chemise and handsome half morocco slipcase with gold lettering.

Observations addressed, at the last anniversary, to the president and fellows of the Royal Society . . .

London: John Murray, 1856. Babbage, Charles (1791-1871). Observations addressed, at the last anniversary, to the president and fel- lows of the Royal Society, after the delivery of the med- als. 10, [2]pp. London: John Murray, 1856. 213 x 127 mm. Disbound.Tiny stab-holes in left margin, small chip in last leaf but very good. Ownership stamp of Dr. A. Nardecchia on title. First Edition. In 1853 the Swedish engineers Georg and Edvard Scheutz constructed their first successful working Difference Engine, a calculating and printing machine based on Babbage’s designs and research. Babbage applauded the Scheutzes’ efforts and did his best to publicize their machine, as he did in this address to the Royal Society in which he gave a brief summary of the Scheutz machine’s construction, noted that it had won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition, and chided the Royal Society for failing to honor the Scheutzes in similar fashion. "Sweden has thus secured for herself the glory of having been the first nation practically to produce a machine for Calculating Mathematical Tables by Differences, and Printing the Results. Wealthier and more powerful nations will regret that the coun- try of Berzelius should thus have anticipated them, in giving effect to an invention which requires for its perfection the tools of nations more highly advanced in mechanical science. But there is still left to them the honor of acknowledging the services of a foreigner, from which the richest and most commercial countries will derive the greatest advantage" (p. 8).Rare on the market.         English Cavalry in the Army of the East. 1854 & 1855.

London: G. Routledge & Co., , 1856. Divisional Orders & Correspondence whilst under the Command of Lieut.-General the Earl of Lucan, K.C.B. Small octavo. Original red wave-grain embossed cloth, title gilt to front board and spine, decorative panelling to both boards, cream surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, some fraying on the joints, head and tail of the spine, hinges a little cracked and repaired, front endpapers slightly stained and with a small chip from the fore-edge of the free endpaper, 1920s gift inscription to the pastedown, light toning to the text, a very good copy. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed on the title page "Colonel Duncombe, 1st Life Guards, from the Author July 29 1882". The recipient was Walter Henry Octavius Duncombe, late Colonel Commandant of the 1st Life Guards. It was Lucan who passed Raglan's order to Cardigan and thus initiated the debacle of the Charge of the Light Brigade. "Immediately after the action, Raglan blamed Cardigan, who replied that he had received a direct order from a senior officer (Lucan). That evening, Raglan accused Lucan of losing the light brigade. Lucan protested that he was only following orders, but Raglan told him that, as a lieutenant-general, he should have exercised his discretion. Next day, to help him prepare his dispatch for the government, Raglan asked Lucan for a copy of the order, as he had not retained one, and this began a series of different versions which circulated in years to come ? Back in England, Lucan strove to clear his name. Twice demands for a court martial were refused on the grounds that his recall rested on his relations with his superior officer not professional misconduct. He took his case to the floor of the House of Lords on 19 March 1855, without noticeable success ? Further to support his overall case, in 1856 he published his divisional orders and correspondence as English Cavalry in the Army of the East. Meanwhile, the mutual antagonism between him and Cardigan continued to fester. Both wrote letters to The Times in April 1855 about the other's actions over the heavy brigade charge, and Lucan was widely thought to have sponsored George Ryan's critical pamphlet in that year, Was Lord Cardigan a hero at Balaclava?" (ODNB). The book includes Lord Lucan's correspondence with General Airey, Lord Raglan, the War Office and others after his recall, and also the two letters published in The Times. The preface explains: "These Divisional Orders and this Correspondence were intended to form an Appendix to a Narrative of the Services of the English Cavalry in the Crimea. Circumstances have made it desirable that their publication should not be further deferred". Uncommon: Copac has BL only; OCLC lists Boston and Ohio universities and the US Army Military History Institute.

        CHAPMAN'S SECTIONAL MAP OF MINNESOTA

Milwaukee: Dyer & Pasmore, 1856. Large colored folding map, 29 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches. Neatly ex-lib., with small, unobtrusive stamp on verso of map, and old shelf label on spine. Overall a very good copy, with a single straight closed tear without loss, laid into original 16mo. green cloth boards, stamped in blind and gilt. A slightly later version of this important Minnesota map, drawn by Silas Chapman. The present incarnation, published by Dyer & Pasmore, differs from an earlier version published by Chapman himself, also in 1856. The present copy reflects the boom in Minnesota's population and economy brought on by the lucrative logging trade. The newest western and northern counties are named and drawn, and the logging region along the north shore of Lake Superior is shown in greater detail than in an earlier state of the map. This version not in Rumsey nor in Phillips' MAPS. Rare. CHECKLIST OF PRINTED MAPS OF THE MIDDLE WEST TO 1900 (MINNESOTA), p.124.

Some very light shelf-wear, spine sunned to brown, and some differential sunning on the boards, Ex-Bath Public Library with the S. B. Miles legacy bookplate in the map pocket, their discreet blind-stamps to the other maps, light toning, one gathering slightly loose, but overall an exceptional copy, superbly preserved. First edition of this remarkable, historically important digest of information relating to the Persian Gulf, with particular attention paid to the Trucial States, now the United Arab Emirates: "This volume is a collection of reports received by the Government of Bombay and was designed to serve as a reference book for officers working in the area Â… Anyone working on the nineteenth-century history of Eastern Arabia and the Gulf comes across frequent references to it Â… It served as a basic source for Lorimer in his Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf, Oman and Central Arabia. It contains, however, a great deal more information that Lorimer omitted, presumably for reasons of space. The history of Abu Dhabi which Lorimer dealt with in just over four pages here receives thirty-four" (Robin Bidwell in his introduction to the 1985 reprint). The period covered was key to the historical development to the region. From the early part of the 19th century, the operations of the Wahhabist Qawasim's "holy war by sea" on what the British referred to as the "Pirate Coast" had much hindered the use of the overland "Desert Mail" to communicate vital despatches to and from Britain's burgeoning Indian empire. When a British ship was "captured less than 70 miles from Bombay" in 1818, it was the final straw and a force was sent out to suppress the "pirates" for once and for all. The expedition was a great success, resulting in the capture of Ras al-Khaimah and the other key Qawasim strongholds, and in 1830 with the conclusion of the General Treaty of Peace, binding the local shaikhs to abjure "plunder and piracy". "However, the British realised that the future security of the Gulf would depend less upon a piece of paper than upon the vigour with which they enforced it. A permanent presence would have to be maintained and to act as policemen both topographical and background knowledge have always been required: the papers printed in this volume were designed to provide this for the men on the spot and for their masters in Bombay". In this context, the first paper is of particular historiographical interest being Captain Robert Taylor's compilation of all the then available reliable information on the region, as a sort of "invasion handbook" for the 1819 expedition. Containing as it does information of the greatest political and strategic importance, the volume was intended for highly limited and selective distribution, as remarked by Bidwell: "Although the print run is not known, it must have been very small or much of it must have been lost. In the seventeen years that I have been responsible for the library of the Middle East Centre at Cambridge, I have never known a copy offered for sale despite an assiduous watch on antiquarian booksellers and their catalogues". We can trace just one complete copy at auction, the Burrell copy; Copac locates eight copies (BL, London Library, Oxford, Aberdeen, Exeter, King's College, LSE, and SOAS); OCLC adds Georgetown, Princeton, and Minnesota, of which only six definitely identify the presence of the large map. This copy was part of the bequest of the widow of Colonel Samuel Barrett Miles to Bath Public Libraries. For 14 years, Miles was one of the "men of the spot", serving successively as Political Agent in Turkish Arabia, Consul-General in Baghdad, Political Agent and Consul in Zanzibar, and Political Resident in the Gulf. In his obituary in the Geographical Journal Miles was commended for his "unrivalled knowledge of the Arab Â… few political officers anywhere have brought to their work such a profound knowledge of orientalism and such indefatigable energy and patience in collecting vast stores of information by personal research or observation". An outstanding provenance for what is a superb copy of this highly elusive, foundational text for the study of the Gulf in the modern era. It is difficult to imagine a better copy.

Anatomie comparée. Recueil des planches de myologie dessinées par Georges Cuvier ou exécutées sous ses yeux par M. Laurillard et Mercier

Dusacq, (1849-1856), Paris - ______ Format : In-plano. Collation : (4), VI, (2) pp., (41) ff. , 336 planches. En feuilles, sous portefeuille demi-toile de l'époque. ___ "Seeking to produce one great 'Anatomie Comparée', Cuvier spent his life gathering some 13,000 items for the museum's public gallery and collecting drawings and documents; 336 plates made according to his drawings and those of Laurillard appeared between 1849 and 1856, with the title 'Anatomie comparée, Recueil de planches de myologie'." DSB III, 524 This copy is complete of the 336 lithographed plates published. It lacks 12 explanatory text leaves. Published in livraisons during 7 years, this book is of utmost rarity. The Bibliotheque Nationale de France has an incomplete copy with 211 plates only. Nissen ZBI 1005. (Note préliminaire de Laurillard). Quelques rousseurs.

Autograph Letter Signed to George Bernard Shaw, on "Tour 1894" letterhead of the Henry Irving and Ellen Terry theater company stationery, n.p., Sept. 25, 1894

Friendships and rivalries in the British theater world of the 1890s show through in our letter by Stoker to fellow Irish author and playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) whom he addresses as "My Dear Shaw." "[Johnny] Toole goes to Burg for the days Thursday Friday & Sat., this week - [Henry] Irving wants me to look after him. He will be at the Derby Hotel. Here is his picture [not included] so that you know him...." He signs in full, "Bram Stoker." The stationery is soiled especially on verso and upper margin, with rust stain from clip on upper left edge. Tear above margin fold not affecting text. Stoker was the personal secretary to actor and theater producer Henry Irving at the time of this writing. The character of Count Dracula may have been based on Henry Irving. In his iconic horror story, Stoker incorporated his experience at Irving's Lyceum Theater by referencing plays which Irving put on there in the 1890's and 90's. According to "Bram Stoker and the Creation of Dracula," by Christopher Frayling, some of Irving's plays included, "a misquotation from Hamlet which introduces Harker's waking nightmare and which Irving always insisted on including in his version of the tragedy: 'My tablets! quick, my tablets! 'Tis meet that I put it down'..." In a review, George Bernard Shaw chided, "performing Hamlet with the part of Hamlet omitted'." Through Stoker's long relationship with Irving, Stoker became involved in London's high society, meeting many people including Hall Caine, who became one of Stoker's closest friends and to whom he dedicated "Dracula." Stoker was the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre from 1878-1898, a theater which Irving owned. Also an actor, Irving appeared at the Lyceum, usually with actress Ellen Terry. When Irving took over the management of the theater in 1878, and hired Stoker, he also hired actress Ellen Terry as the company's leading lady - a partnership that lasted 25 years. Stoker and Ellen Terry were both under Henry Irving's sway and had a bond with one another. Since Terry and Shaw had a different kind of bond, it would be probable that Stoker met Shaw at various times over the course of his life.  As Henry Irving's business manager, Stoker wrote many of Irving's letters including letters to Shaw which begin as ours does. George Bernard Shaw was a journalist, book reviewer, art and theatre critic who was just beginning to see success in his playwriting.  His reviews of Henry Irving and the theatre productions at Irving's Lyceum theatre were quite disparaging. Shaw criticized Irving's productions almost to the point of ridicule but not Irving himself as an actor. Irving kept mostly silent about this, but then seemed to get his revenge when Shaw sent him "The Man of Destiny" to produce. Irving paid him a retainer, but never produced the play. Our research indicated that Shaw told Ellen Terry that a production by Irving would establish Shaw. Shaw was outraged when Irving refused to produce the play; hence Irving's revenge. Jealousy may have also played a part in the combative relationship between Shaw and Irving. George Bernard Shaw was enamored with Ellen Terry and jealous of Irving's connection to her which was both professional and personal. Our research shows that Shaw wanted Terry in his own plays and possibly as a love interest. The two of them did have a romance of sorts, what Shaw called a "paper courtship" which began in the 1890s. It was a long, flirtatious correspondence, but mostly likely a relationship only on paper. Other letters are known, some published, from Stoker to Shaw, with Stoker writing on behalf of Irving. This letter was written before the feud between Irving and Shaw, and Stoker's words of welcome on behalf of Irving are surprising given their future. We have not found our letter to be published. John Toole met Henry Irving when they acted together in 1857 in a summer tour in John Poole's farce "Paul Pry." They remained friends for the rest of their lives. In 1879, Toole took over the management of the Folly Theatre, renaming it in 1882 to Toole's Theatre. He retired from the stage in 1893, however, continuing to make occasional appearances. His theatre was demolished in 1895 and his theatre company in 1896.

La Marine au XIXe siècle par Lebreton dessinateur du voyage autour du monde du C Amiral Dumont-Durville

Paris: Théodore Lefèvre, 1856. Rear cover moderately rubbed, touch of foxing affects the preliminaries.. Oblong album measuring 245 x 335 mm., title-page and twelve tinted plates, fine in original decorated papered boards. Unusually attractive mid-nineteenth century French lithographic album with five skilfully executed scenes of naval engagements during the Crimean War. As the title boasts, Louis Lebreton served as illustrator of the second voyage of Dumont d'Urville to the Pacific and southern ocean regions during 1837-1840, his depictions of the native peoples of the Marquesas and other outlying islands are well regarded. The album comprises thirteen lithographic plates, including the romantic pictorial title-page depicting mariners wrecked upon the rocks. Five scenes depict the French and British at sea during Crimean War engagements of 1854; namely Friedland in consort with a British warship entering the Bosphorus, the arrival of the Anglo-French fleet at Kalamita, bombarding the defences of Sevastopol, and the British gunboat Agamemnon tackling a gale in Sevastopol harbour. The last Crimean lithograph is an especially dramatic rendition of the port of Balaclava viewed from the clifftops with archaic ruins in the foreground.Other marine scenes of interest include Galilée, a fully rigged naval paddle-steamer, Brasilian clipper l'Impératrice rounding the Cape, an American barque at La Havre and the enormous gunboat Napoleon half rigged at resting at anchor.
