THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories and Funny Picturers for Little Children.

Leipsig, Friedrich Volckmar, and London at the Agency of the German Literary Society, circa 1856.. NINTH ENGLISH EDITION circa 1856 after the 19th German edition, 245 x 200 mm, 9¾ x 7¾ inches, original buff (or cream?) card covers, wide decorative border on both covers, vignette on lower cover of 2 old people and 3 children, lettered on upper cover only. 24 pages of hand coloured illustrations in the design of the original edition: Peter's hair hangs down over his face (but no chamber pot under Frederick's bedside table). Recased long ago with 19th century dark roan reback, first 4 pages mounted on thin linen. Corners worn with 20 mm (¾") chips to surface paper, boards grubby along edges, a few small water marks to boards, inner paper hinges cracked, endpapers spotted, large closed tear to front endpaper repaired with archival tape. Small piece cut from top margin of first page, inscription below it dated April 1856, minute wormhole to top corner of first 2 pages, margins slightly fingermarked, occasional light margin soiling. A previous owner or his/her parent has tried to wash the blood which drips from Conrad's mutilated hand, resulting in a bit of a smear across the top of the page, smudging the tailor's trousers also. Still a decent bright copy of a very scarce early English edition. After about 1859 the illustrations were changed to show Struwwelpeter with a mop of wavy hair, as found in the reprints of today, none of it over his face. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Collection of watercolours showing Indian Navy ships in the Arabian Gulf. Includes Collingwood's original surveying telescope. [Mostly Arabian Gulf], 1856-1858.

1856. Three hand-drawn watercolours showing the "Coromandel" (148 x 225 mm), the "Tigris" (178 x 240 mm), and the "Georgiana" (142 x 240 mm), mounted on backing paper, separately matted. With a presentation leather-cased 1½-inch three-draw leather-covered surveying telescope and compass compendium by Andrew Ross, London, contained in 29 cm leather carry case with lid enclosing a lacquered-brass compass, collapsed length 25 cm, expands to 71 cm. A striking collection of original watercolours drawn by Lieutenant William Collingwood, civil engineer in the Royal Indian Navy, during his surveying mission to the Middle East in the mid-1850s. The three ships, all built for the "Honourable [East India] Company", are the H.C. Screw Troop Ship "Coromandel" ("1112 Tons. Commander C. D. Campbell I.N. London to Madras Aug. to Nov. 1856"), the H.C. Brigantine "Tigris" ("Persian Gulf. Entering "Cheroo" Bay. August 1857"), and the H.C. Schooner "Georgiana" ("Lieut. Collingwood Comd. off 'Karack', Feb. 1858"). While the exact location of the "Coromandel" at the time of sketching is not identified (though Collingwood was undoubtedly in the Arabian area at the time), the other two ships are clearly sailing the Arabian Gulf. The "Tigris" is shown entering Cheroo Bay (Chiruyeh, Bandar-e Chiru), on the south coast of Persia, opposite Inderabi Island; the bay was popular with navigators in the region for offering safe shelter from western and northwestern winds, with regular soundings of up to ten fathoms quite near the shore. The "Georgiana" is pictured farther north off Kharg Island, 16 miles from the coast of Bushehr province. Kharg is mentioned in the 10th-century "Hudud al-'alam" as a good source for pearls and was visited by Jean de Thévenot in 1665, who recorded trade with Isfahan and Basra. After the Dutch Empire established both a trading post and a fort on the island in 1753, the Dutch fort was captured in 1766 by Mir Mahanna, the governor of Bandar Rig. The island was briefly occupied in 1838 by the British to block the 1838 Siege of Herat but was soon returned. - Slight loss to upper left corner of all three sheets; some brownstaining and traces of folds, but well-preserved on the whole. The ensemble is neatly complemented by Collingwood's presentation surveying telescope and compass compendium, the telescope being signed and inscribed: "From Comr. Selby, Surveyor in Mesopotamia, to Lieut. W. Collingwood, Asst. Surveyor, in kind remembrance of Services together in Babylonia & Irak Arabia". Commander W. B. Selby, who dedicated this fine telescope-cum-compass set, began his distinguished surveying career in 1837 when, as a midshipman, he embarked on the expedition first to lay navigation buoys in the mouths of the Indus River and then to chart some coastal areas in the "Horn of Africa". By 1846 he was back working off the mouths of the Indus, having made his reputation in Mesopotamia (in 1840-41), and thereafter achieved considerable acclaim for his numerous other surveys, including those during the military expedition to Persia in 1856, before returning to England at the end of 1862. He was succeeded as Surveyor of Mesopotamia by his protégé, Lt. William Collingwood (a distant cousin of the Admiral), who had already done much valuable work in the region, including the large-scale, though surreptitious, mapping of Baghdad in 1855, described by him as follows: "The survey of the city of Baghdad was completed entirely by myself and under very unpleasant restrictions [...] The Turkish Government were not to know anything about it [...] and I was left to survey the town as best I could, and under such difficulties that at times I had to note bearings and paces all over my white shirt, where best I could get the pencil at the time [...]". During this same expedition, Collingwood also surveyed the Shatt-ul-Arab, the city of Bussorah (also by stealth) and much of the country between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and was undoubtedly one of the most gifted and productive R.I.N. surveyors of his day.

Jérusalem. Etude et reproduction photographique des monuments de la ville sainte depuis l'époque judaïque jusqu'à nos jours. Planches. Paris, Gide & Baudry, 1856.

1856. Folio (335 x 432 mm). 3 ff. of letterpress matter (half-title, title and list of plates). With 40 mounted calotypes. Contemp. marbled half morocco on five raised bands with gitstamped spine title; marbled endpapers. Rare original edition: the plate volume of the reduced version of this magnificent work, containing 40 calotypes. Wishing to support L. F. J. Caignant de Saulcy in the controversy concerning the dating of the wall of Jerusalem that followed his journey to the Dead Sea, Auguste Salzmann set out for the Holy Land on 12 December 1853. With the help of his assistant Durheim, he prepared some two hundred waxed-paper negatives of the Jerusalem monuments during his four-month stay. While his findings were first published in a monumental volume in 1854 (the copy of the Duke de Luynes commanded 463,500 Euros at Sotheby's Paris in 2013), the present reduced edition, with prints by Blanquart-Evrard, is the better known. "It was an expensive book, a livraison, or fasicle of three prints costing 24 gold francs. A single print was 10 francs [...] Salzmann was acutely attentive to both patina and pattern in attempting to define the architectural strata of a city in which building was built upon building, thus leaving a vertical record of the various cultures that had occupied the city and left their remains on the foundations built by earlier conquerors [...] Salzmann himself described his pictures as having 'a conclusive brutality', but to modern eyes their poetic aspect seems paramount. It would appear that Salzmann was at one and the same time both expert and layman, dispassionate observer and enthusiast. His pictures have this dual quality, flickering rapidly between documentary and poetry. This, one might suggest, is the ideal goal for any photographer". - Binding slightly rubbed and chafed in places. Marginal foxing throughout, affecting only a few photographs; insigficant waterstain to edge; old ownerships erased from title, leaving slight traces. Parr/Badger, The Photobook I, 25. Tobler 181f, Röhricht 440f. Baier, Geschichte der Fotografie 452f. Gernsheim, History of Photography 186. Witkin/London, Photograph Collector's Guide 86f.

        Autograph letter signed. Weimar, 1856.

1856. 4to. 3 pp. To the music publisher Carl Haslinger, asking him to have a look at "the arrangement for two pianofortes" on which he has spent three days annotating and editing so as "to propose a new version, with many annotations to the piano and fewer parts for instruments" (transl. from the German original). He also sends his Hungarian Rhapsody "properly instrumented" and asks Haslinger "to prepare a similar edition." Moreover, he reports that he visited Zurich with his friend Wagner. - Inserted in Robert Bory's book "La vie de Franz Liszt par l'image" (Editions du journal de Genève, 1936, 1st numbered copy on Holland Van Gelder paper, bound in burgundy leather). - Provenance: Robert Bory, musicologist.       Chicago, 1856. 20pp. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine stamped in brown and gilt. Text trimmed close at fore-edge, costing portions of words throughout. Good. A rare and important polemic "written in bitter hostility to the Hudson's Bay Company, and exposing their operations on the Pacific Coast and among the Indian tribes and fur traders from the earliest times" - Eberstadt. "Scripps, author of an official life of Lincoln, visited the Lake Superior Country in 1855 and upon his return, made an extensive study of the region from the Great Lakes westward with special reference to the fur companies, the inhabitants, Hudson's Bay Company, water courses and minerals. He also points out the economic advantages of the Northern region for the United States" - Decker. "Scripps, who was editor and publisher of the DEMOCRATIC PRESS, had visited the Lake Superior country in 1855. He discusses here primarily the area of western Canada from Lake Superior to the Pacific, with comments on the Minnesota region south of the international boundary. He has a good deal to say about the fur trade and the Hudson's Bay Company. Tafeln, feiner Halbleinenband; St.a.Tit.; frisches Expl; beigebunden 3seitiger Brief Quart, Bamberg den 31.Sept. 1856, mit eigenhändiger Unterschrift. Erstdruck!

Feuillets brunis

        Rue Napoleon, Algiers.

Biskra., ca. 1856, Original photograph, albumen print, 25,4 x 19,9 cm. Damaged spot at right upper corner, upper corners cut off. - Photograph from his journey to Algérie 1856-1858 Félix Jacques Antoine Moulin (1802 -1875). - A "specialist in académies" was how Félix Jacques Moulin listed himself in city business directories when he opened a photographic studio in Paris in 1851. Académies, or artists' studies, was the polite term for nude studies, which frequently bordered on the pornographic; that same year Moulin was arrested for the possession and sale of "obscene objects." He was sentenced to a month in prison and fined but was not deterred. He continued to sell académies to artists and other interested consumers. Moulin also purchased the rights from Roger Fenton's publisher to sell Fenton's Crimean War photographs. In 1856 Moulin traveled to Algeria, where he made city views and studies of the country's inhabitants. KEYWORDS:algeria/algiers/photo

CATECHISM FOR JEWISH CHILDREN: DESIGNED AS A RELIGIOUS MANUAL FOR HOUSE AND SCHOOL

Philadelphia; Stereotyped For The Author By L. Johnson & Co, [1856]. 5616. Original Cloth. 12mo. X, 134 pages. 19 cm. Third edition. Singerman 1437. Dedicated to Rebecca Gratz. Preface to Third edition: ?The favourable reception which this manual met with on its first appearance induced me to issue, in 5605, a second edition, differing scarcely from the first; [?] About eleven years have now elapsed since this book was reissued; and, as it has by degrees found its way into many schools, I now present it in a manner more permanent than before, --the title slightly changed, and with such verbal corrections here and there as a careful revision has pointed out to be needed. The second edition had indeed not been exhausted by the public demand; but, a calamitous conflagration having destroyed the remainder of the same, a new supply had to be provided, to answer any demand which may be made for it; and it is to be hoped that the Catechism in its new form may be the means of an extended usefulness for many years to come. And, in this connection, I cannot avoid stating that it is a gratifying phenomenon that, notwithstanding the indifference which many express towards religion, there is a deep-seated feeling that something ought and must be done to enlighten the youthful mind. Therefore, if any event in my life can afford me some degree of satisfaction, it is the consciousness of having added one contribution, by this unpretending work, to satisfy the demand for information in the ways of the law of God. [?] With these few words the Catechism is again offered to the indulgent kindness of the American and British Israelites, in the full hope that it may be of service to those for whose edification it was composed. ? Subjects: Jewish religious education. Jews - Education - United States. OCLC lists 6 copies. Lightly stained and lightly foxed. Wear to original boards. Good + condition. (SPEC-40-1)

Reis om de wereld naar Japan.[Rotterdam, Nijgh], 1856. Large 8vo (24.5 x 16 cm). With a frontispiece, title-page and 10 plates (all tinted wood engravings) and a few wood engravings in text. Contemporary half morocco.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 517; Pagès 624; not in Nipponalia. First and only edition in Dutch of the travel account of a German artist on board Commodore Perry's ship, to Japan. As the official artist on board Perry's expedition, Heine made hundreds of sketches during the journey which form an important record of Japan just before the Meiji Restoration. As can be expected of an artist, Heine's descriptions of his travels are very scenic. Added to the travel account is an ethnographical description of Japan. Heine's very popular work was originally published in German and immediately translated into French and Dutch. The 11 plates include a view of the Ryukyu islands, a bathhouse in Shimoda and Perry in conference with Japanese negotiators. Binding worn at the extremities with the top of the spine repaired. Some foxing, especially near the plates. A good copy, without the often lacking letterpress title-page.

Album of 93 Original Water Colour Paintings by Richard Ford (21 April 1796 - 31 Aug 1858), compiled by His Wife, Mary Ford (25 Jan 1816 - 4 March 1910).

83 leaves. Very good. Large octavo (11.75" X 9.5"). Recently finely bound in full speckled calf with blindstamped diamond design to both boards. Edges and sides of boards stamped in rolled gilt design. Spine in 6 compartments; red morocco label with gilt title to one compartment, remainder stamped heavily in gilt. Raised bands. Marbled endpapers. A.e.g. With 83 leaves containing 93 mounted water colours by Ford, a letter introducing the album, a manuscript index by Mary Ford, and a colour portrait miniature of Richard Ford on ivory. Some watercolours in sepia tones and the remainder in full colour. Manuscript titles to most paintings in the hand of Mary Ford. Some sketches loosely mounted, with Ford's manuscript notes and signatures on the back. Occasional spotting and age toning to margins of leaves. A full description of each watercolour available on request. The water colours included in this album were composed after Ford's marriage to his third wife, Mary Molseworth, on June 12, 1851. That August, Ford and Mary left on a grand tour of England and Scotland and many of the paintings here must have been completed during this honeymoon trip. Featured are many religious sites in England and Scotland, including churches, cathedrals, and abbeys at, Iffley, York, Worcester, and Durham composed, no doubt, by Ford for his young bride, "a learned ecclesiologist [who] has been enchanted with the cathedrals of Hereford, Tewksbury, Gloucester, Worcester, and York, but most of all with most Princely Durham (Robertson 259)". Their trip also took them to Bolsover Castle, Barnard Castle, Kelso, and the Lake District, most of which are depicted in the album's water colours. Also included are scenes from France, including several of Dieppe and one of the Pyrenees, dated 1856. These must be among Ford's last foreign sketches, as his health continued to decline after returning to London from Paris. As would be expected from a travel writer, most of the paintings are of specific locations and scenes, titled accordingly. This album, crafted by Mary Ford within just a few short months after Richard Ford's passing, stands as a poignant memorial to her husband, his art, and their marriage. Mary's choice to include so many images composed during their trips together-- and of Mary's favorite subjects-- must have been an emotional one. A tremendous archive of the great travel writer, artist, and critic, Richard Ford, with an unparalleled and moving familial provenance. A copy of Ford's biography is included with the book: Robertson, Ian. Richard Ford1 796-1858: Hispanophile, Connoisseur and Critic (Norfolk, UK, 2004).

A rare and important polemic "written in bitter hostility to the Hudson’s Bay Company, and exposing their operations on the Pacific Coast and among the Indian tribes and fur traders from the earliest times" - Eberstadt.
