Pike's Illustrated Catalogue of Scientific and Medical Instruments, Second edition Enlarged Volume 1 ONLY

New York: Benjamin Pike, 1856. First Printing. Cloth. First Printing. ix (1st blank), [10]-394, [4-blank] pages. Volume 1 ONLY of 2 volumes. In the original cloth with gold gilt embossed front panel illustration of scientific instruments. An exlibrary copy with several large bookplates affixed to front pastedown and front flyleaf. Properly withdrawn. Original yellow endpapers. Two institutional stamps to rear of frontispiece and title page. Pages 61-82 have creasing to the lower corner and some edge fraying with a bit of marginal loss to paper (not affecting any text or images). Corners worn at tips as normal with boards showing through. The spine panel is frayed at top and bottom. A previous owner did some hand coloring to the spine panel tops and rear gutter. While not overly offensive, the spine could be rebacked and the original spine laid down to remove this enhancement - binding is sound as is, which is unusual given the propensity for the spine panel on these to come loose when the cloth at the edges wears through. Still presents reasonably on the shelf, with spine lettering bright and front board decoration bright and clean. Cloth. Perhaps the best scientific instrument catalogue published in America. Highly illustrated, providing an excellent reference for this maker and the items carried in New York in the middle of the 19th century. A first printing of the second (and best) edition, expanded from the first edition published in 1848.

THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories and Funny Picturers for Little Children.

Leipsig, Friedrich Volckmar, and London at the Agency of the German Literary Society, circa 1856. NINTH ENGLISH EDITION circa 1856 after the 19th German edition, 245 x 200 mm, 9¾ x 7¾ inches, original buff (or cream?) card covers, wide decorative border on both covers, vignette on lower cover of 2 old people and 3 children, lettered on upper cover only. 24 pages of hand coloured illustrations in the design of the original edition: Peter's hair hangs down over his face (but no chamber pot under Frederick's bedside table). Recased long ago with 19th century dark roan reback, first 4 pages mounted on thin linen. Corners worn with 20 mm (¾") chips to surface paper, boards grubby along edges, a few small water marks to boards, inner paper hinges cracked, endpapers spotted, large closed tear to front endpaper repaired with archival tape. Small piece cut from top margin of first page, inscription below it dated April 1856, minute wormhole to top corner of first 2 pages, margins slightly fingermarked, occasional light margin soiling. A previous owner or his/her parent has tried to wash the blood which drips from Conrad's mutilated hand, resulting in a bit of a smear across the top of the page, smudging the tailor's trousers also. Still a decent bright copy of a very scarce early English edition. After about 1859 the illustrations were changed to show Struwwelpeter with a mop of wavy hair, as found in the reprints of today, none of it over his face. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

She was born at Beverley, Yorkshire, and showed an early interest in literature. She became a prolific and versatile writer, producing in addition to her lively and well-written novels many books on travel, and others dealing with historical subjects. She was a keen observer, and her travel to the East gave her an accurate and deep knowledge of the peoples and manners of the East. To modern readers she is probably best known for her books on her travels in Turkey, which are some of the earliest works by a woman on this area. In 1836 she traveled to Constantinople with her father, Major Thomas Pardoe. This voyage inspired her book The City of the Sultan (1836). Later she collaborated with the artist William Henry Bartlett to produce The Beauties of the Bosphorus (1839), an illustrated account of Constantinople. Lady Arabella; or The Adventures of a Doll would appear to have been her only children's book.George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Boquet Album" of Mollie E. Walker

Harris County, Georgia. 1856-1865. Dark brown leather album with stamped gilt decorations and the words "Boquet Album" on the front cover measuring 8.5" x 6". Good only with a chipped crown, boards worn and near detaching. A Boquet Album started by Mollie Walker of Georgia just before the advent of the Civil War and continuing into the beginning of the War, with entries dated between 1856-1865. Walker collected handwritten letters, verse, poetry, essays, and floral illustrations from her friends, mostly women, stating on the first page, "my album is my garden spot, where all my friends may sow." Most of the writing is copied versions of famous texts, scripture, poems, adages, most having to do with death and the afterlife, presumably engendered by the deaths of friends and acquaintances in the War, as well as effusive essays on friendship, all dedicated to "Miss Mollie" at the beginning of the passages. A woman named Amanda writes, "lest cypress trees and willows wave, to mark the lonely spot; but all I ask to deck my grave shall be, "forget me not." Another quote dated 1865 reads, "it is not all of life to live or all of death to die."An intriguing look at the sentiments, fears, and aspirations of women during the heart of the Civil War South. .

        Autograph letter signed ("Bettine"). [Frankfurt a. M.], n. d.

1856. Large 8vo. 2 pp. on double leaf. With autogr. address. - In 1856, Théophile Gautier's like-named son published a translation of "Contes bizarres par Achim d'Arnim" (with a preface by his father). - Slightly browned due to paper, small defect on f. 2 from opening the letter (no loss to text); somewhat wrinkled and with small creases in the centerfold.

Camoëns. [ Dramma lirico in tre atti - Opera en trois actes ] [ Manuscrit vénitien 1856 - 1857 ]

1856 - 3 vol. in-folio (28 x 40 cm) cartonnage recouvert de papier imitation veau raciné, papier au filigrane à Aigle à deux têtes couronnées et initiales D. V. C., Venezia, 1856 - 1857, 134 ff. ; 142 ff. ; 96 ff. Dramma lirico in tre parti.

The Caravan to Mecca. The Halt in the Desert. Vienna, M. Trentsensky / London, A. N. Myers & Co., [before 1856].

1856. Folio (387 x 242 mm). 49 hand-coloured illustrations on 6 plates and hand-coloured folding lithogr. backdrop (desert scene; c. 580 x 224 mm). Original blue wrappers with lithogr. cover label. Charming Mignon Theatre of the kind popularized by the Viennese publisher Trentsensky around the mid-19th century and distributed throughout England by their London agent Myers, & Co. on the corner of Oxford and Berners Street. The desert landscape backdrop is to be populated by the pilgrims, camels, resting horses, etc., with plants, a large tent, a cooking fire, and many other details, all to be cut out from the present set of plates. Issued as "Exercises in Colouring", this set was clearly coloured by a trained contemporary artist rather than a dilettante. - The front cover is stained, spine splitting, but the plates are clean and well-preserved. Rarely encountered complete, well-coloured, and in the original state. - Another example, prominently featured in the 2012 Hajj exhibition at the British Museum was cut and mounted. Hajj.         THE ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories and Funny Picturers for Little Children.

Leipsig, Friedrich Volckmar, and London at the Agency of the German Literary Society, circa 1856.. Collection of watercolours showing Indian Navy ships in the Arabian Gulf. Includes Collingwood's original surveying telescope. [Mostly Arabian Gulf], 1856-1858.

1856. Three hand-drawn watercolours showing the "Coromandel" (148 x 225 mm), the "Tigris" (178 x 240 mm), and the "Georgiana" (142 x 240 mm), mounted on backing paper, separately matted. With a presentation leather-cased 1½-inch three-draw leather-covered surveying telescope and compass compendium by Andrew Ross, London, contained in 29 cm leather carry case with lid enclosing a lacquered-brass compass, collapsed length 25 cm, expands to 71 cm. A striking collection of original watercolours drawn by Lieutenant William Collingwood, civil engineer in the Royal Indian Navy, during his surveying mission to the Middle East in the mid-1850s. The three ships, all built for the "Honourable [East India] Company", are the H.C. Screw Troop Ship "Coromandel" ("1112 Tons. Commander C. D. Campbell I.N. London to Madras Aug. to Nov. 1856"), the H.C. Brigantine "Tigris" ("Persian Gulf. Entering "Cheroo" Bay. August 1857"), and the H.C. Schooner "Georgiana" ("Lieut. Collingwood Comd. off 'Karack', Feb. 1858"). While the exact location of the "Coromandel" at the time of sketching is not identified (though Collingwood was undoubtedly in the Arabian area at the time), the other two ships are clearly sailing the Arabian Gulf. The "Tigris" is shown entering Cheroo Bay (Chiruyeh, Bandar-e Chiru), on the south coast of Persia, opposite Inderabi Island; the bay was popular with navigators in the region for offering safe shelter from western and northwestern winds, with regular soundings of up to ten fathoms quite near the shore. The "Georgiana" is pictured farther north off Kharg Island, 16 miles from the coast of Bushehr province. Kharg is mentioned in the 10th-century "Hudud al-'alam" as a good source for pearls and was visited by Jean de Thévenot in 1665, who recorded trade with Isfahan and Basra. After the Dutch Empire established both a trading post and a fort on the island in 1753, the Dutch fort was captured in 1766 by Mir Mahanna, the governor of Bandar Rig. The island was briefly occupied in 1838 by the British to block the 1838 Siege of Herat but was soon returned. - Slight loss to upper left corner of all three sheets; some brownstaining and traces of folds, but well-preserved on the whole. The ensemble is neatly complemented by Collingwood's presentation surveying telescope and compass compendium, the telescope being signed and inscribed: "From Comr. Selby, Surveyor in Mesopotamia, to Lieut. W. Collingwood, Asst. Surveyor, in kind remembrance of Services together in Babylonia & Irak Arabia". Commander W. B. Selby, who dedicated this fine telescope-cum-compass set, began his distinguished surveying career in 1837 when, as a midshipman, he embarked on the expedition first to lay navigation buoys in the mouths of the Indus River and then to chart some coastal areas in the "Horn of Africa". By 1846 he was back working off the mouths of the Indus, having made his reputation in Mesopotamia (in 1840-41), and thereafter achieved considerable acclaim for his numerous other surveys, including those during the military expedition to Persia in 1856, before returning to England at the end of 1862. He was succeeded as Surveyor of Mesopotamia by his protégé, Lt. William Collingwood (a distant cousin of the Admiral), who had already done much valuable work in the region, including the large-scale, though surreptitious, mapping of Baghdad in 1855, described by him as follows: "The survey of the city of Baghdad was completed entirely by myself and under very unpleasant restrictions [...] The Turkish Government were not to know anything about it [...] and I was left to survey the town as best I could, and under such difficulties that at times I had to note bearings and paces all over my white shirt, where best I could get the pencil at the time [...]". During this same expedition, Collingwood also surveyed the Shatt-ul-Arab, the city of Bussorah (also by stealth) and much of the country between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and was undoubtedly one of the most gifted and productive R.I.N. surveyors of his day.

Jérusalem. Etude et reproduction photographique des monuments de la ville sainte depuis l'époque judaïque jusqu'à nos jours. Planches. Paris, Gide & Baudry, 1856.

1856. Folio (335 x 432 mm). 3 ff. of letterpress matter (half-title, title and list of plates). With 40 mounted calotypes. Contemp. marbled half morocco on five raised bands with gitstamped spine title; marbled endpapers. Rare original edition: the plate volume of the reduced version of this magnificent work, containing 40 calotypes. Wishing to support L. F. J. Caignant de Saulcy in the controversy concerning the dating of the wall of Jerusalem that followed his journey to the Dead Sea, Auguste Salzmann set out for the Holy Land on 12 December 1853. With the help of his assistant Durheim, he prepared some two hundred waxed-paper negatives of the Jerusalem monuments during his four-month stay. While his findings were first published in a monumental volume in 1854 (the copy of the Duke de Luynes commanded 463,500 Euros at Sotheby's Paris in 2013), the present reduced edition, with prints by Blanquart-Evrard, is the better known. "It was an expensive book, a livraison, or fasicle of three prints costing 24 gold francs. A single print was 10 francs [...] Salzmann was acutely attentive to both patina and pattern in attempting to define the architectural strata of a city in which building was built upon building, thus leaving a vertical record of the various cultures that had occupied the city and left their remains on the foundations built by earlier conquerors [...] Salzmann himself described his pictures as having 'a conclusive brutality', but to modern eyes their poetic aspect seems paramount. It would appear that Salzmann was at one and the same time both expert and layman, dispassionate observer and enthusiast. His pictures have this dual quality, flickering rapidly between documentary and poetry. This, one might suggest, is the ideal goal for any photographer". - Binding slightly rubbed and chafed in places. Marginal foxing throughout, affecting only a few photographs; insigficant waterstain to edge; old ownerships erased from title, leaving slight traces. Parr/Badger, The Photobook I, 25. Tobler 181f, Röhricht 440f. Baier, Geschichte der Fotografie 452f. Gernsheim, History of Photography 186. Witkin/London, Photograph Collector's Guide 86f.
