Curmer (Paris) 7 1/2 x 11 inches tall x 2 1/4 inches thick in a sumptuous Curmer full black morocco binding, blind tooled borders and four raised cross pattee (cross formee) designs to both front and rear covers, five raised bands and blind stamped title to spine, all page edges crimson with gilt 'bee' design, purple moire endpapers, xii, 399, xiv. Rubbing, staining and edgewear to covers, with some fraying to the tips. Lower headband broken, but the binding is quite solid. Spotting to purple moire endpapers. Bookplate of prior owner Edouard Joltrain (1880-1930), a well-known Paris physician and researcher, to front free-endpaper. One of the (blank) front free-endpapers is partly detached at the top. A couple of instances of minor staining or smearing to a page. Otherwise, a very good copy of this very scarce issue, in a magnificent binding. Typography by J. Claye. References: Vicaire, Manuel de l'amateur IV, pp. 489-490; Brunet, Supp. I, p. 673. In 1858, Curmer issued a supplementary second volume to this edition, with material such as an account of the presumed authors of the book, and an essay on illuminated manuscripts. But this 1856 volume is complete unto itself. ~QQQ~ In French. This massive 1856 edition of Thomas Kempis' medieval Christian classic, 'The Imitation of Christ,' was something of a milestone in the use of chromolithography, a magnificent edition of the text from the acclaimed 1626 translation by Michel de Marillac (1560-1632). Each page has a border copied from an ancient manuscript, the facsimiles and engravings being collected from upwards of 360 manuscripts executed between the sixth and nineteenth centuries. Five full-page chromolithographs are introduced as frontispieces to the entire work and each of the four books of the Imitation. They are: (1) Louis XIV at prayers; (2) Anne of Brittany praying, accompanied by her Ladies of Honour; (3) The Education of the Blessed Virgin Mary; (4) The Annunciation; and (5) The Nativity. These last four, as well as the twelve pages of the preface, are copied from the Book of Hours of Anne of Brittany in the sixteenth century. The twelve pages forming the calendar of the months which commences this work are embellished in conformity with the custom of ornamenting with illuminations all Books of the Hours. They are taken from a Book of Hours in the Louvre collection. Pages 270 and 271 are printed on a plain gold ground with borders of the letter 'M' (Mary) and the motto 'Car Non' twined round broken pillars. The editor has produced an immense variety of examples and very aptly shown how 'primitive' the taste of early illuminators was. In addition to the instance just mentioned, a good example is at pages 276-277, where the text is printed in letters of gold on a bright red ground. These last are taken from a Sacramentary of Pope Gregory the Fourth at the beginning of the ninth century found in a convent near Constance and now preserved at Heidelberg. Contents of the volume: half-title, title, preface (pp. i-xii), text with a separate half-title and title (pp. 1-399), and a table of contents (pp. i-xiv). See Thomas Coomans & Jan de Maeyer, 'The revival of medieval illumination' at p. 116. 'The Imitation of Christ,' sometimes referred to as 'The Following of Christ' or 'The Christian Pattern,' is a Christian devotional book first composed in Latin circa 1418-1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which presumed author Thomas Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible. . Very Good. 1856.

Die Chorkapellenfenster der Votivkirche mit dem Leben Mariae in 38 Bildern componirt... ausgeführt in der Glasmalerei-Anstalt des C[arl] Geyling in Wien. Original-Aufnahmen von A. Voigt. Mit 20 auf starken Karton montierten Original-Photographien. Wien, o. J., [nach 1879]. 33,0 x 19,5 cm. 1 Bl. Blauer Leinwandband d.

- Kanten minimal berieben. Bindung aufgrund des schweren Kartons gelockert. Kartons vereinzelt leicht fleckig. Vorsatz u. Titel mit gekröntem Monogrammstempel "E A". Außerdem kleines Bibl.-Schild.

[Broadside] William Penn's Treaty with the Indians. This justly celebrated treaty, was formed in the year 1682; under the large elm at Shackamaxon, now Kensington, Philadelphia.

Philadelphia: Engraved & printed by Illman & Sons, 211 Arch St., [1856-7].. 1 sheet. First edition. Illus. with hand-colored engraving. Most likely published late 1856 by the publisher of the Public Leger, Philadelphia, Swain & Abell, as a New Year's Day annual greeting to the subscribers of The Ledger Carrier in 1857. A classic and sentimental view of the founding of America and its relations with the country's original inhabitants, the print depicts the seaside encounter between American colonists and Native Americans. "A group of natives crowds around two young colonists, who kneel at the center of the image with a roll of cloth. Behind them, William Penn stands with a large sheet of paper in his left hand. In the right foreground is a large wooden chest; in the left, a bow and quiver of arrows. Sailors unload cargo from ships on the sea in the right background. Behind the central figures, the main street of a colonial town rise up beside Indian tents, " (AAS). A variation after a painting by Benjamin West. William Penn's facsimile signature is under the image along with eight lines of poetry: "How beautiful the scene portrayed above, A treaty, framed in Justice, Truth, and Love! Our City's Founder and the peaceful 'Friends'. Stoop to no subterfuge, to gain their ends; While with unswerving confidence, around Their Indian brethren occupy the ground. This incident, a maxim may afford, And prove our PENN was 'mightier than the sword'." Scarce, even more so hand-colored. OCLC locates only two libraries with this broadside, neither colored: American Antiquarian Society and Univ. Mich. Clements Lib. (its copy imperfect: foxing and discoloration, affecting image). Seven other locations but with a digital image only. A very good copy, some light foxing, a few tiny spots on the text.

Leaves of Grass - Second Edition

Brooklyn: Fowler & Wells, 1856. Brooklyn, NY [Fowler and Wells], 1856: Second Edition, one of only 1,000 copies rumored to have been printed. Published one year after the first edition, this edition contains 20 new poems and a featured a new portable format. The publishers withheld their names due to the controversial reviews from the first edition. Recently rebound in half leather binding with raised bands and gilt tooling, with the original cloth preserved over boards. New end papers and tissue guard. The text block shows foxing. Brackets in margins with a few underlines and a handful of small notations, most are in pencil (and likely erasable) but around 25 pages have them in faded black ink. Faint tide marks at top of prelims, and in margins of a few pages. Reading creases to a few page corners. An extremely scarce and very early edition of Walt Whitman's iconic collection.
