HUNTER'S OTTAWA SCENERY, in the Vicinity of Ottawa City, Canada

William S. Hunter, Jr., Ottawa City, Canada West, 1855 (for 1856) - Second edition. Folio, 33.5 cm, original dark brown cloth decorated in blind, gilt lettered within a gilt circle on front cover, all edges gilt. pp 19 text (in double columns) + frontispiece and illustrated title + 13 other lithographed plates (mostly tinted) with tissue guards + folding map. Small cloth chips to spine tips, minor damp spotting to covers; small ink blot to fore edge of tissue guard at title leaf, map creased but not torn, small evidence of removed bookplate inside front cover, else a fine, lovely copy, text and plates very clean, no foxing, hinges and joints not cracked, no owner names, plates a clear strike. TPL 3563, Lande 1861, Sabin 33937. The lithographs were from Hunter's own drawings and were printed in Boston by J.H. Bufford, who also worked with Nathaniel Currier. "Probably the first book to include lithographs drawn by Winslow Homer, who was apprenticed to Bufford's of Boston at the relatively late age of eighteen, for a period of two years. The present work includes the apprentice's first substantial published lithograph (the third plate, View of the Locks, Entrance of Rideau Canal) which is initialed by Homer, and the large title vignette and five other plates that are attributable to him on grounds of style". - Tatham, Winslow Homer and the Printed Book (1992). " 'Ottawa scenery' first appeared in . a small initial printing of . a few hundred copies. A second edition . still carrying the year 1855 on its title page, followed, probably in mid-1856. In the second edition the letterpress has been entirely reset, though the contents of Hunter's essay are virtually the same. In the first edition the signature marks on the gatherings of pages are numerals; in the second edition they are letters. Hunter altered the folding map for the second edition chiefly to show additional rail lines around Chicago. Bufford's shop redrew three of the lithographic views for the second edition. The need for a second edition seems to have arisen in the spring of 1856, when the Canadian Legislative Assembly ordered 140 copies of the book, one for each of its members. Presumably this was to inform the legislators about the town that had just become a contender in the consideration of sites for the new capitol. Because Hunter had apparently not forseen a need for a second printing, he had made no arrangements to keep standing either the type or the stones from which the first edition had been printed." - Tatham. The plates include: (1) Bird's Eye View of Chaudière Falls; (2) Rideau Falls; (3) View of Locks; (4) View from Barrack Hill - Looking Down the Ottawa; (5) View from Barrack Hill; (6) Junction of the Gatineau with the Ottawa river; (7) The Approach of the Suspension Bridge; (8) Suspension Bridge over Chaudière Falls; (9) The Big Kettle; (10) A Portion of the Chaudière Falls, from the North; (11) The Chasm, Chaudière Falls; (12) View from Interior of Chasm; (13) Timber Slide; (14) Natural Curiosity Ottawa River. An excellent copy of the first, largest, and best view book of Canadian artist and designer William Stanley Hunter, Jr. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A False Alarm on the Road to Gretna and One Mile from Gretna.

      B. Moss & Co., late 19th cent. - Two original late 19th-cent. hand-colored aquatints measuring approximately 11 x 16 inches (28 x 41 cm.). Matted and framed. The unpretentious little village of Gretna Green located one mile inside the boarders of Scotland on the historic coaching road between London and Edinburgh, and as such, was the goal of enterprising runaway couples from England. Under a more liberal Scottish law that existed before 1856, all that was needed to constitute legal marriage was a solemn declaration of willingness, before two witnesses: residential qualifications were not necessary. The enterprising blacksmith at Gretna Green, for a consideration of course, would hastily perform the rough and ready formalities. He did rather well with his sideline, joining over 1,000 in wedlock in front of his anvil. Once the word got about of the lucrative trade, the Innkeeper of the Toll Inn decided that he too should get a piece of the action, over and above his tariff for lodgings, performing an 'all in' package for some 1,300 in six years.

Note that this is a heavy and oversized set, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~KM5~ The first volume of this work was one of two large-scale French publications in the 1850s which 'took chromolithography into new territory,' says historian Michael Twyman in his 2013 'A History of Chromolithography: Printed Colour For All' (London: The British Library), p. 158. It 'has long been regarded as a landmark French book, and its 400 pages of border decorations continue to delight the eye through the variety of their design and their vivid use of colour.' In addition to being a milestone in the use of chromolithography, the text of the beloved devotional work 'The Imitation of Christ' is the acclaimed 1626 French translation by Michel de Marillac (1560-1632). Each page has a border copied from an ancient manuscript, the facsimiles and engravings being collected from upwards of 360 manuscripts executed between the sixth and nineteenth centuries (many of which are documented in Volume 2). Five full-page chromolithographs are introduced as frontispieces to the entire work and each of the four books of the Imitation. They are: (1) Louis XIV at prayers; (2) Anne of Brittany praying, accompanied by her Ladies of Honour; (3) The Education of the Blessed Virgin Mary; (4) The Annunciation; and (5) The Nativity. These last four, as well as the twelve pages of the preface, are copied from the Book of Hours of Anne of Brittany in the sixteenth century. The twelve pages forming the calendar of the months which commences this work are embellished in conformity with the custom of ornamenting with illuminations all Books of the Hours. They are taken from a Book of Hours in the Louvre collection. The process involved the use of more than 900 lithographic stones, on which the designs were placed using a combination of ink and crayon work and printing done on thin, calendered card, with most of the borders employing ten to fourteen colors. Volume 2, which is illustrated with black-and-white engravings throughout, includes: a preface on the Imitation, by Jules Janin; the issue of authorship of the Imitation, by Fr. Delaunay; Ferdinand Denis on the history of ornamented manuscripts; an 1857 catalog of manuscript editions and printed editions of the Imitation (with its own title page); and two works on 'La Grand Danse Macabre des Hommes et des Femmes.' 'The Imitation of Christ,' sometimes referred to as 'The Following of Christ' or 'The Christian Pattern,' is a Christian devotional book first composed in Latin circa 1420-1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which presumed author Thomas Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible. . Good. 1858. First Edition.

Graphic Scenes of the Japan Expedition

GP Putnam & Company, New York 1856 - 20th-century maroon half morocco over paper-covered boards, titled in gilt on spine, original wrappers bound in An important work recording Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan. William Heine was the official artist on Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853-54. On returning to the United States he produced several series of prints commemorating the trip. A group of six elephant-folio prints appeared in 1855, and the following year the present volume was issued, in a smaller format, with different images and with explanatory text. Both projects employed the New York lithographic firm of Sarony, among the best lithographers in the United States at that time. "As artistic productions, the pictures speak for themselves . none superior to them have been executed in the United States, and they have no cause to shun comparison with some of the best productions of Europe" (Introduction). Copies were produced tinted on regular paper as in the present copy and hand-coloured. The plates are numbered and titled as follows [1. portrait of Perry]; 2. Macao from Penha Hill; 3. Whampoa Pagoda; 4. Old China Street, Canton; 5. Kung-kwa at On-na, Lew-Chew; 6. Mia or road side chapel at Yokuhama; 7. Temple of Ben-teng in the harbor of Simoda; 8. Street and bridge at Simoda; 9. Temple of the Ha-tshu Man-ya-tshu-ro at Simoda; 10. Grave yard at Simoda Dio Zenge. Bennett describes the plates as "many times finer than those in the regular account of the Perry expedition." His remarks on the work's great rarity are confirmed by its absence from both of Cordier's Japanese bibliographies. Bennett, p.53; McGrath American Color Plate Books 123. (20 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches). 12 ff. letterpress text. 10 lithographic prints (one tinted portrait of Perry from a daguerreotype by P. Haas, nine views by Heine [two of these chromolithographed, seven printed in two colours on india paper mounted]), all printed by Sarony & Co. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Leaves of Grass (Second Edition)

Brooklyn, NY [Fowler and Wells], 1856: Second Edition, one of only 1,000 copies rumored to have been printed. Published one year after the first edition, this edition contains 20 new poems and a new portable format. The publishers withheld their names due to the controversial reviews from the first edition. Recently rebound in half leather binding with raised bands and gilt tooling, with the original cloth preserved over the boards. New end papers and tissue guard. The text block shows foxing. Brackets in margins with a few underlines and a handful of small notations, most are in pencil (and likely erasable) but around 25 pages have them in faded black ink. Faint tide marks at top of prelims, and in margins of a few pages. Reading creases to a few page corners. An extremely scarce and very early edition of Walt Whitman's iconic collection.

Foxglove Bells: A Book of Sonnets

Brussels: J.H. Briard, 1856 - Presentation copy inscribed by Westwood "from the author, Feb. 1861", and with a 4-page ALS dated Oct 28 /63 and addressed "Dear Sir" laid in, discussing a proposed bibliography of the Garlands and other angling matters. "I send you with this a rough copy of the skeleton bibliography of the Garlands, praying you to look it over & add, expunge & correct as you may deem expedient . I will ask Bohn for Chatto's address." "Westwood produced many poems and published a number of collections but was conscious that they lacked something. In a humorous sonnet entitled 'The Small Poets' he wrote 'Oh for a wizard's sleight . to turn this swarm of mites into one Mighty!'. However, W. S. Landor remarked that he would have liked to have written Westwood's 'Love in the Alpuxaras'" (DNB). 'The Small Poets' appears on p. 32 of the present work. Westwood, who knew Charles and Mary Lamb and Wordsworth in his youth, lived in west Flanders (Belgium) for much of his later life, and was a pioneering bibliographer of angling. He published the first of his labors in the same year as this inscription, A New Bibliotheca Piscatoria, quickly followed by the Chronicle of the Compleat Angler in 1863. The Bibliotheca Piscatoria of 1883 was written in collaboration of Thomas Satchell.         Paris et Ses Environs 1856: Grand Album Représentant les Vues et les Monuments les plus curieux de Paris et les Sites les plus remarquables des Environs.

Paris: Maison Martinet, [1856]. - Oblong folio, (11 1/8 x 15 inches). Tinted lithographed title page; 40 tinted lithographed plates, each with original tissue guard tipped in (occasional spotting, tissue guards slightly browned). Original publisher's green cloth, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt (worn). First edition. Quite rare, with only 3 copies recorded by WorldCat. This lushly illustrated album of tinted lithographs is one of a series published between 1855 and 1861, and it reflects many of the changes in Paris's landscape which came about as a result of Haussmann's great renovation of the city. 1855 marked the arrival of the Paris World's Fair. Napoleon III, newly Emperor and eager to prove himself, built the Palais de l'Industrie in an attempt to best London's Crystal Palace, the centerpiece of her Great Exhibition in 1851. One of the plates here depicts the Palais de l'Industrie, with the blind-stamped notice: "H. Plun seul éditeur autorisé pour les vues du palais de l'Industrie 3.R. Garancière." This building was later destroyed, to make way for the Grand Palais of the 1900 World's Fair. "From 1853 to 1870 as prefect of the Seine -- director of public works for the Paris region -- Haussmann energetically attacked and largely solved many of the ills caused by the rapid and tremendous growth of the commercial center and social lodestone of France. His urban design program was second to none in modern times. Demolishing some 12,000 structures, cutting 85 miles of new direct roadways through the city to replace 333 miles of meandering old ones, erecting imposing landmarks like the Opera and the Halles Centrales, revamping the antiquated and unhealthy water and sewage systems, increasing the number of street lights and sidewalks, and establishing parks equal to contemporary schemes in London and New York, Paris under Haussmann was in an almost constant state of construction upheaval. "The broad, light-filled, tree-lined thoroughfares that became his hallmark perfectly illustrate the multiplicity of purpose that always underlay the efforts of this protean pragmatist. Haussmann's boulevards, for the most part angled across existing streets and linked together at diagonals, served many different functions. They connected the city's new train terminals more efficiently, allowed the quick deployment of troops in case of revolts like those of recent memory in 1830 and 1848, and 'disemboweled' the troublesome neighborhoods where those rebellions traditionally fomented. They also permitted the more expedient transport of goods and services around town as the local economy shifted from small artisans working near their homes to an industrialized system spread over a wide area. Finally, they gave shape to the eight new arrondissements Haussmann added around the periphery of Paris, and set up an extendible matrix for future growth" (Martin Filler, The New York Times, 1991).         Report on the Discipline of the Convict Prisons

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1856. Large octavo, with a folding statistical table and eight folding plans bound at the rear; a very good copy in recent navy cloth with blue wrappers bound in, bookplate of Bernard Gore Brett. Model Prisons after transportation. The Jebb Report on prisons: a detailed and informative report, with much on the history of transportation, the hulks, and general conditions. Colonel Joshua Jebb was a reformer who wrote at a critical time, just after the cessation of transportation to eastern Australia, with all of the practical difficulties that decision created Jebb, a former officer of the Royal Engineers who served as Surveyor-General of Prisons from 1838, was a proponent of bigger and better gaols, and his report emphasises the importance of novel architecture and design. He is credited with the successful completion of several British prisons, asylums and similar institutions (significantly, Jebb played a central role in the design and construction of the Pentonville model prison). Of particular interest in this report are the large and detailed folding plans of Chatham prison. These plates show: the overall plan of the penitentiary, ground plans and elevations of the compound itself, transverse and longitudinal sections, the punishment cells and infirmary, the chapel and finally the Warder's quarters and family residences.

        DANMARK.

Copenhagen: Emilius Baerentzen, 1856. - Two volumes. [46]; [31] lithographic plates (some in color), each followed by descriptive text. Chromolithographic title. Oblong folio. Contemporary maroon cloth, ornate gilt-lettered covers, a.e.g. Second volume rebacked at an early date, corners repaired. Rubbed. Minor foxing. Occasionally dampstaining in lower margin. Images generally clean. Old ownership stamp on front fly leaf of first volume. Very good. An impressive lithographic tour of Denmark and her colonies. While the majority of the plates show local Danish scenes and landscapes, nine views show scenes in America: three in Greenland and six of islands in the Danish West Indies (the eventual U.S. Virgin Islands). The views in America are: Greenland: 1) "Parti ved Jakobshavn. (Grönland)." Chromolithograph of a native hunting party gathered on an icy shore. 2) "Colonie Omenak. (Grönland)." View of a small Greenland colony, with a large ship offshore and clusters of colonists engaged in various activities in the foreground. 3) "Kingoa- Dalen. (Grönland)." View of a traveling party cooking on an open fire in a lush valley. Perhaps the party was on a portage; a canoe is shown in the lower left corner. Danish West Indies, now the U.S. Virgin Islands: 1) "Christianssted. (St. Croix)." A panoramic view of the harbor, showing a large church and Danish fort. 2) "St. Jan. (Parti af det Indre)." A wide view of the lush landscape, showing settlers cooking over an open fire in the foreground. 3) "Cruxbay. (St. Jan)." A pastoral scene of activity just outside the settlement walls. 4) "Parti af St. Thomas." A cityscape of the port of St. Thomas, displaying the city's impressive architecture. 5) "Parti ved Frederikssted. (St. Croix)." A river scene, showing five men in a rowboat trolling for fish and a large Danish fort to the far right. 6) "St. Thomas. (Parti af Byen og Havnen)." A close-up view of the harbor, showing a bustling downtown area and a full port, including an early steamer. An attractive and rare assemblage of views. In addition to the Greenland chromolithograph, five additional chromolithographs of Danish scenes are present, along with scenes in Iceland and the Feroe Islands. There are very few visual images of the U.S. Virgin Islands from this early date. OCLC locates three copies. OCLC 40745391.

The Crimean Expedition, to the Capture of Sebastopol. Chronicles of the War in the East, from its Commencement to the Signing of the Treaty of Peace. Translated from the French by Robert Howe Gould.

London: Sampson Low, Son & Co., 1856 - 2 volumes octavo (212 × 130 mm). Contemporary calf by Hayday, black morocco labels, gilt in compartments with fleuron centre-tool, double gilt fillet panels with floral corner-tools, enclosing a dotted panel in blind, marbled edges and endpapers. A bit rubbed, particularly at the spines, one label a little chipped, head-cap of volume II chipped and repaired, front hinge of volume I, starting but sound, light toning, very good. Portrait frontispiece to both volumes. First edition in English, same year as the first French. Bazancourt was appointed official historiographer by Napoleon III, and charged with the responsibility of producing a history of the French part in the war in the Crimea. He left in January 1855 and on his arrival "received, from the principal officers of the Army, a welcome, by which I was at once honoured and profoundly touched. I have drawn from these living sources, the valuable and authentic documents which have guided me through the labyrinths of this complicated work. The Journals of the various Divisions - and those of all the military operations of the campaign and the siege - have been shown to me. It is upon the very spot where the greater part of these events had passed, that those who had directed them have recounted to me their most striking episodes. I inquired - I listened - and I wrote" (author's preface). He subsequently wrote similar accounts of the campaign in Italy 1859, and in China and Cochinchina, 1860-2. Eton leaving inscription to the first blank dated 1860; "George Henry William Hervey from his sincere friend Clanmaurice". Henry Charles Keith Petty Fitzmaurice, viscount Clanmaurice, later fifth marquess of Lansdowne, was Governor General of Canada (1883-8), Viceroy of India (1888-94), Secretary of State For War (1895-1900) and Foreign Secretary (1900- 1905). Not common, and here in a slightly worn, but still attractive, binding by the incomparable Hayday, whose "name attached to a book raised its value twenty-five per cent" (DNB).         Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, Performed in the Years 1852, 1853, and 1854, Under the Command of Commodore M.C. Perry

Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, by Order of the Congress of the United States, 1856. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Volume I (of 3), the complete expedition narrative, compiled by Hawks "from the original notes and journals of Commodore Perry and his officers, at his request, and under his supervision." 9 x 11.5 inches, pp xvii, [1] (errata), [1-3], 4-537, beautifully illustrated with maps, charts, and lithograph plates, including the notorious suppressed "nude bathing plate" entitled "Public Bath at Simoda," which is not found in the table of illustrations. Bound in original cloth, rebacked with the original spine laid down. Cloth faded, corners worn; binding sound and contents clean. Perry's expedition was sent to Japan to induce the Japanese government to enter into diplomatic relations with the United States, which Perry believed he could accomplish through a display of superior naval force. "After his entry into Araga Harbor on July 8, 1853, the Japanese were eventually compelled to accept a treaty...opening the ports of Hakodate and Shimoda. The most significant result, however, was that Perry's visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the subsequent modernization of Japan" (Hill 1332).

A System of Logic - Rationative and Inductive (Being a connected view of the principles od evidence and the methods of scientific investigation) [2 volumes in one]

John W. Parker and Son, London 1856 - "This book makes no pretense of giving to the world a new theory of the intellectual operations. Its claim to attention, if it possess any, is grounded on the fact that it is an attempt, not to supersede, but to embody and systematize, the best ideas which have been either promulgated on its subject by speculative writers, or conformed to by accurate thinkers in their scientific inquiries. To cement together the detached fragments of a subject, never yet treated as a whole; to harmonize the true portions of discordant theories, by supplying the links of thought necessary to connect them, and by disentangling them from the errors with which they are always more or less interwoven, must necessarily require a considerable amount of original speculation.         JOHN HALIFAX, GENTLEMAN. In Three Volumes. (Fine Copy in Original Publisher's Cloth)

London: Hurst & Blackett, 1856. Mulock, Dinah Maria (Mrs. Craik). JOHN HALIFAX, GENTLEMAN. In Three Volumes. London: Hurst & Blackett, 1856. First Edition. An exceedingly FINE copy in original publisher's earth-brown wavy-grain cloth with drab yellow endpapers and single leaf inset ads at the back of vols. 1 & 3. All three volumes are equally bright, crisp and untouched. Several different colors and styles of original cloth are known to be found on this first edition without priority (see Wolff 4996). Mrs. Craik aka Miss Mulock (1826-1887) was one of the rivals of "George Eliot" -- a Victorian female novelist who had something to say, who inspired national debate on her subject, and wrote with intellect and enduring charm to contemporary acclaim. JOHN HALIFAX, GENTLEMAN remains to this day one of the high spots of Victorian women's fiction, a novel which presented an ideal portrait of the nobility the author saw in the hard-working English middle-class. Although, as Mrs. Craik, she is perhaps best known in our 21st century as the author of the children's tale THE LITTLE LAME PRINCE, critics and enthusiasts of her work have never wavered in their respect for this novel, her masterpiece. This particular set is slightly cocked, there is some dustiness to the edges, and one inner hinge is starting but 1850s publisher's cloth was notoriously the most perishable of any Victorian decade and this fine, untouched set is quite the amazing survival. Robert Lee Wolff states in his Nineteenth Century Fiction, a Bibliographical Catalogue: "I must have seen a dozen copies of the book for sale over the years, all but [mine] such dogs I could not buy them." His copy was only "Very Good" and this set, even by today's occasionally inflated grading, is clearly Fine. All three volumes bear the blind-stamp of Swinnerton & Brown, Stationers, Macclesfield on the front free endpaper. Housed in a handsome vintage quarter-morocco slipcase. Sadleir 1812. Wolff 4996. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine.
