[Broadside] William Penn's Treaty with the Indians. This justly celebrated treaty, was formed in the year 1682; under the large elm at Shackamaxon, now Kensington, Philadelphia

Philadelphia: Engraved & printed by Illman & Sons, 211 Arch St., [1856-7]. First edition. A very good copy, some light foxing, a few tiny spots on the text. Sheet size: 16 1/4 x 13 inches. Image area approx. 13 1/4 x 10 inches. Illus. with hand-colored engraving. Most likely published late 1856 by the publisher of the Public Leger, Philadelphia, Swain & Abell, as a New Year's Day annual greeting to the subscribers of The Ledger Carrier in 1857. A classic and sentimental view of the founding of America and its relations with the country's original inhabitants, the print depicts the seaside encounter between American colonists and Native Americans. "A group of natives crowds around two young colonists, who kneel at the center of the image with a roll of cloth. Behind them, William Penn stands with a large sheet of paper in his left hand. In the right foreground is a large wooden chest; in the left, a bow and quiver of arrows. Sailors unload cargo from ships on the sea in the right background. Behind the central figures, the main street of a colonial town rise up beside Indian tents," (AAS). A variation after a painting by Benjamin West. William Penn's facsimile signature is under the image along with eight lines of poetry: "How beautiful the scene portrayed above, A treaty, framed in Justice, Truth, and Love! Our City's Founder and the peaceful 'Friends'. Stoop to no subterfuge, to gain their ends; While with unswerving confidence, around Their Indian brethren occupy the ground. This incident, a maxim may afford, And prove our PENN was 'mightier than the sword'." Scarce, even more so hand-colored. OCLC locates only two libraries with this broadside, neither colored: American Antiquarian Society and Univ. Mich. Clements Lib. (its copy imperfect: foxing and discoloration, affecting image). Seven other locations but with a digital image only.

Acta Societas Scientiarum Indo-Neerlandicae . Verhandelingen der Natuurkundige Vereeniging in Nederlandische Indie

Batavia: Typis Lange and Co., 1856-, 1859. Six volumes, illustrated with 26 lithographs, mostly depicting spiders and fishes, (including seven ichthyological plates), one fine coloured lithograph of a Hornbill, large folding map of the central Javanese provinces of Kadoe and Bagelen, some water marking affects the rear of volume one, and the pages showing some browning and spotting; but overall a very good set in a recent library binding of dark blue cloth, neat library stamps to front paste-down and title-pages, some with release stamps, sectional title pages bound to rear of last volume. An exceptional collection of Dutch natural history journals printed in Batavia, all published. The series of six volumes is particularly noteworthy for the many species noted here for the first time, many of which are endemic to Indonesia and Australia. The journal is exceptionally important with regards to the scientific description of spiders, crustaceans, and fish of these regions. Although there are countless interesting papers, perhaps the most important contributor is the icthyologist Pieter Bleeker, whose 21 articles on fishes includes dozens of new discoveries, including no fewer than 42 fishes and 7 crustacea from Australian waters. Bleeker (1819-1878) was a Dutch medical doctor stationed in Indonesia from 1842 to 1860, who established a network of contacts among fellow scientists and local fishers, all of whom sent specimens from throughout the region. He is estimated to have collected around 12,000 specimens, many of which are now in the Natural History Museum in Leiden. Bleeker began publishing his Atlas Ichthyologique in 1860, a comprehensive work of 36 volumes, since republished by the Smithsonian. The Acta also include a pioneering paper by the entomologist C.L. Doleschall on Spider Species, which lists and figures many smaller spiders from the region for the first time, including 11 species now recorded in the Australian Faunal Directory. Quite apart from these specifically Australian papers, there are also several important articles on the natural history of Asia, with a natural focus on Indonesia, but also including important contributions on Borneo, New Guinea, and Japan, again with a particular interest in fish species. There is also a small but important paper on a Hornbill from Sumatra by Roosenberg, illustrated with a fine coloured lithograph. An uncommon work, especially complete as here.

Sepia-toned portrait photograph by Maull & Polyblank

1856 - Grant, Robert Edmond (1793-1874). Portrait photograph, from Maull and Polyblank's Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities (1856-60). 305 x 254 mm. Faint stain in left margin, but very good.Portrait of Scottish comparative anatomist Robert E. Grant, a student of Cuvier, Geoffroy St. Hilaire and Lamarck, and an early supporter of the concept of the transmutation of species as set forth in the writings of Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin. In the 1820s Grant began a study of sea sponges, and published several papers demonstrating that these organisms were animal rather than vegetable in nature. In these studies Grant was assisted by the young Charles Darwin, who was then living in Edinburgh.[Grant and Darwin] would often go out on long walks together at the Firth of Forth, discussing marine biology and collecting marine animals. Darwin started dissecting some of the specimens they collected, although rather poorly. Grant taught him how to make observations in nature and how to spot important specimens. During these walks Grant filled Darwin's head with evolutionary ideas, especially those of the French naturalist, Lamarck, whom Grant admired a great deal ("About Charles Darwin," AboutDarwin[dot]com). In 1827 Grant was named professor of comparative anatomy and zoology at London University (later University College, London), a post he held for 46 years.

4 autograph letters to Dr. Harley on scientific subjects

Brighton & London, 1856. <p>Hall, Marshall (1790-1857). Four A.L.s. to George Harley (1829-96). The first letter dated March 13, 1856, from 11 Princes Street, Hanover Square, London; the remaining letters dated December 24, 26 and 27 from 37 King&#39;s Road, Brighton. 8vo. 12pp. total. 191 x 117 mm. Creased where previously folded, light soiling along folds, otherwise very good. </p><p>A series of letters on medical and scientific subjects from the British neurologist Marshall Hall, author of seminal works on reflex action and epilepsy (Garrison-Morton 1359 & 4812), to Dr. George Harley, who published the classic description of paroxysmal hemoglobinuria ("Harley&#39;s disease"; G-M 4171) in 1865. The letters refer to Harley&#39;s physiological experiment on a cat and what appears to be a course of investigations on the nerves using the poison woorali (a source of one of the constituents of curare); Hall agreed to supply Harley with woorali, and posed many questions and suggestions as to how Harley might proceed. Also mentioned are Claude Bernard&#39;s investigations of the pneumogastric [i.e., vagus] nerve, the work of the French physiologist Charles Brown-Sequard, and the investigations of Regnault and Reiset on respiration (G-M 932). The letters read as follows: </p><p>(March 13, 1856): I have long looked for you, hoping you would one day call on me. I was much pleased with your experiment. It was doubtless an Epileptoid affection induced by a morbid condition of incident nerves. Many such cases in the human subject are on record. Have you seen the (English) work of M. Brown-Sequard published in the United States? [possibly a reference to G-M 1322, Brown-Sequard&#39;s paper, "Experimental researches applied to physiology and pathology," Med. Exam. 8 (1852): 481-504] May I publish your experiment omitting the part respecting the cat&#39;s death by worrying-with?-or without?-your name? When did you last see Dr. Marcot? Pray make my kind remembrances to Prof. Sharpey. I trust his health is improved. _____________</p><p> (December 24, 1856): You are quite welcome to the Woorali; but how to get it [to] you I know not, until I return to London, which is uncertain as to date. All my goods & chattels are in a hired room in Wandsworth. I wrote you a third note. Did you receive it? I have procured Reid. Has [Claude] Bernard changed his opinion since 1855? I fancy not. I mean the opinion that the pneumogastric ends [illeg.] in the lungs, [illeg.] thro&#39; the medulla [illeg.] in a reflex route. _____________ </p><p>(December 26, 1856): I heard of your kind inquiries after me the other day at Mr. Bullock&#39;s. For an idea of my malady I may refer you to the Lancet for Nov. 22, p. 560 where you will find a series of [illeg.] which confirm my symptoms. I am certainly not worse since I came to Brighton seven weeks ago. But the cold, fog and north wind are very trying to me. How does your [illeg.] proceed? Pray write fully and tell me all about it. I have been reading your paper sur le Diabete. One idea has occurred to me: Could the Ether act in the lung, carried thither by the vena cava, right side of the heart and [3 words, illeg.]? What would be the corresponding effect of injecting it into the jugular vein? What are the precise effects of dividing 1. [illeg.] pneumogastris; 2. both; 3. the right; 4. the left? But you will say-Ohe, jam satis! Let me hear from you at great length and be informed that I shall always take great interest in your proceedings. _____________ </p><p>(December 27, 1856): It has occurred to me that on leaving London, I gave the vial containing the Woorali poison to Mr. Lloyd Bullock (15 Hanover Street) for safe keeping. Pray call on him and ask if this be so and then it is very much at your service. Mr. Bullock will give it to you on showing him this poisons document! When you see Mr. Bullock pray kindly ask him about the degree of trouble to him of once more repeating my last four experiments, and then ask yourself whether you would kindly join him in making them less [illeg.] as to their results. A young friend of mine recently from Paris would be present. What I was to know is whether Bernard has changed his opinion as expressed in his 8vo volume p. that the excitation of the pneumogastric by [illeg.] air in the lung is a cause of the formation of sugar in the liver. Where is Regnault and Reiset&#39;s paper on respiration? What was the [illeg.] in your investigation? I am much obliged to Dr. Marcot. Why did I never see him recently when in London? Pray give him one of the inclosed, accept one yourself, and place the third on the Library Table at University College. DSB (Hall). </p>

        The Landscape Album

New York: Leavitt and Allen, (1856-1861) New York: Leavitt and Allen. (1856-1861). Friendship book. Octavo. Illustrated with black and white prints of landscapes, full red decorated morocco, all edges gilt. Some foxing, one page loose, covers worn with part of spine missing. Owned by Mary Low, this friendship book (sort of like a school yearbook) is inscribed by over forty people, with poems, brief messages of friendship, or religious verse. Some of the people who wrote in the book were Low's family and friends. A majority were her fellow students at the Ladies Collegiate Institute, a short-lived, all-female college in Worcester, Massachusetts. The president of the institute, Werden Reynolds (elected in 1859) also signed the book. The Ladies Collegiate Institute was incorporated in 1854 and opened in 1856. It was located in Davis Hall, which was built in 1852 by the architect Elbridge Boyden, who would later design Worcester's St. Paul's Cathedral. From 1852 to 1854, the building housed the Worcester Medical College. In 1855, the Ladies Collegiate Institute took over the property, only to close in 1860-1861. A nice souvenir of a short-lived enterprise, one of the early educational institutions dedicated to women's higher learning. .

Nach dem Sacramento. Reisebilder eines Heimgekehrten von Carl Meyer.

Aarau [Switzerland]: Druck u Verlag von U. R. Sauerlander, 1855 [but date on front wrapper is 1856]. - 8vo., (7 ¾ x 5 inches). Unopened (a bit of faint spotting). Original pictorial gray paper wrappers lithographed by G. Wolf (fragile, a little frayed at the edges). First edition. An account of a visit to the Californian goldfields. Meyer tells, among other tales, how in 1853 there was an inn at San Francisco which had the notice "Here you may get drunk for a dollar, dead drunk for two dollars, and get straw for nothing." "Born in Germany, Meyer left for New Orleans in February 1849 bound for the Isthmus of Panama. On the Pacific side, he boarded the three-masted ship, 'Sarah Elisha,' and after a difficult voyage, arrived in Monterey in the spring. Henry Wagner speculates that some inconsistencies and errors indicate that Meyer wrote this book based on his memory rather than a journal. Nonetheless, Meyer must be credited with providing some of the strongest word pictures of the Gold Rush. His summaries of the last vestiges of Mexican California are all choice. His descriptions encompass a Mexican caravan on its way to the Mariposa diggings, geology of the region, gold mining camps, San Francisco, Indians (the Allequas tribe in particular), river steamers, and bull and bear fights in Sacramento. Having witnessed the birth and social forming of the gold country, Meyer left for home via Nicaragua in 1852" (Kurutz, "The California Gold Rush" 439a. Cowan I, p. 154; Cowan II, p. 428; Howes M572; Wheat, "Books of the California Gold Rush" 140). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Popular History of the Palms and their Allies

London : Lovell Reeve, 1856. London : Lovell Reeve, 1856 A very good to near fine copy of the rarest title in Lovell Reeve&#39;s Popular History series. Seemann was a botanist who made his name when he was appointed naturalist (on the recommendation of W J Hooker) to HMS Herald for the Kellett voyage of exploration to the American West Coast and Pacific. The series, aimed primarily at younger readers as an informed introduction to natural history, varies greatly in the quality of its authors as the publishers set strict budget limits on publication costs. In recent quarter leather binding with raised bands, gilt compartments, and gilt titles to spine and marbled boards. New endpapers. With 20 high quality colour printed plates. 17 x 13.5 cms. There is browning to page edges and the odd light mark, but otherwise this is a very good internally. A lovely book.
