George Bernard Shaw TLS Typed Letter Signed to Alfred Wareing 1921

no publisher - George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. T.L.S., G. Bernard Shaw, one page, 4to, London, 16th June 1921, to Alfred Wareing. Shaw refers to the disputes between theatre producers and directors to get licenses and touring rights and states `I need hardly say that Macdona deplores my reservation of the licenses to the repertories as an invasion of his touring privileges. As he has been touring for me continuously since 1912, he regards you and Macdermott as mushrooms and interlopers, whilst you two despise him as a stroller and a vagabond from the old regime. , further ending `I do not see how I can give touring rights to the repertories. They all want them; and their wants would clash hopelessly. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Nissen BBI 2254. - Great Flower Books, S. 157f. "C. L. Blume, Ad. Brongniart, Alph. de Candolle, Carrière, Duchartre, H. R. Goeppert, Henri Lecoq, J. Linden, Naudin, Planchon, J. Putzeys, P. E. de Puydt, H. G. Reichenbach, M. Scheidweiler, D. F. L. von Schlechtendal, von Siebold, L. Vilmorin und de Vriese" (a. d. Titelblatt). New York: Dix & Edwards, 1856 First edition. One of 2,500 copies. Publisher's brown T cloth, with vine and leaf border illustrations to the boards in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Very good with a few nicks and tears to cloth, bright spine and sturdy binding, light rubbing to the boards, lacking a front fly leaf, former owner's stamps to the front endpaper and title page, light scattered dampstaining to the otherwise bright pages. Overall, a sturdy and unsophisticated copy. BAL 13669. The Piazza Tales is Melville's first and only collection of short stories and includes several of his most highly regarded pieces. Of the 2,500 copies of The Piazza Tales that were bound for this first edition, 1,193 copies remained on hand with the publisher, 260 had been given free to editors, and 1,047 sold at sixty cents apiece - a very unfortunate financial result for Melville. Notably, this first edition of The Piazza Tales is the only edition to be published during Melville's lifetime.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Fotografia in formato orizzontale, applicata su cartoncino rigido in formato cm.24,5x34.

The Alphabet of Wild Flowers Addressed to Her Young Daughter Illustrated by Lady Strange

[no place] 1856, 1856. Oblong album. A superb museum-quality manuscript wild flower alphabet, with text by Louise Thomas of Eyhorne House, Hollingbourne, Kent, with calligraphy and illumination by Lady Strange. Contents feature a title page illuminated in gold, with indents, followed by fourteen leaves of manuscript illuminated with fine watercolours, elegant calligraphy and golf leaf decoration. Final leaf states 'Lady Strange fecit 1868', which would coincide with her daughter, Mary, coming of age. Bound in an ornate covers of dark green velvet with intricate gold brocade decoration to upper, red watered silk endpapers, contained in a green watered silk chemise and dark green slipcase. Internally fine, fragile binding worn at joints but holding, case and box rubbed to extremities. It would appear that Louise Thomas commissioned Lady Strange to execute these works for at least two of her daughters, one being held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The V and A example is dated to coincide with daughter Charlotte reaching adulthood.

        Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur wissenschaftlichen Medizin.

. Frankfurt am Main, Meidinger Sohn, 1856, 8°, XIV, 1024 pp., zahlr. Holzschn., 3 z.T. handcol. Taf., feiner Halbleinenband im Stil der Zeit.. Erste Ausgabe. - - Rudolf Virchow is the 'most prominent German physician of the nineteenth century' (DSB) and the founder of modern pathology. Gesammelte Abhandlungen is a collection of papers published between 1846 and 1853, and includes 'the first clear description of thrombosis and embolism' with 513 pages, his very important articles on white cells and leukemia (in which Virchow gave the disease its present name), and discussions of developmental pathology, gynaecological subjects and diseases of newborn babies. - Garrison-Morton 3006 & 3064; Heirs of Hippocrates 1891; Norman 2155; Waller 1005.

COLVILLE'S SACRAMENTO DIRECTORY VOLUME VI FOR THE YEAR COMMENCING MAY, 1856: EMBRACING A GENERAL AND BUSINESS REGISTER OF CITIZENS, WITH STATISTICAL TABLES, HISTORICAL REFERENCES, BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES, etc IN FINE, A GAZETTEER OF THE CITY

San Francisco: Printed by Monson, Valentine & Co., 1856.. xxxix,[1],140pp., followed by [8]pp. of ads. Original half sheep and printed green boards, spine gilt. Boards rubbed, stained, and edgeworn. Bookplate on front free endpaper. A touch of occasional foxing or tanning, but generally quite clean and neat internally. A very good copy. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. A very nice copy, in original condition, of an early and rare Sacramento directory. This is the fourth and last of Colville's annual Sacramento directories (the first was published in 1853) and only the fifth Sacramento directory overall. Why Colville referred to this 1856 directory as "Volume VI" on the titlepage is unknown. It is the most substantial Sacramento directory to date, and the first to feature biographical sketches of notable residents, as well as descriptions within the directory of certain businesses, fire companies, churches, etc. The directory is prefaced by a lengthy description of the city, its civic structure, public utilities, and private businesses. The front board is taken up by an advertisement for Wells Fargo's banking and express services, and a multitude of ads appear throughout the text. Included are notices for druggists, hotels, theatres, stone cutters, attorneys, machinists, stage and steam companies, bakeries and ice vendors, booksellers, and more. Prominent among the ads is a full-page notice for Stanford Brothers merchants, operated by Leland Stanford, who would become one of the "Big Four" railroad barons, serve as governor of California, and found Stanford University. "Rare" - Quebedeaux. QUEBEDEAUX 49. ROCQ 6522. GREENWOOD 730. GRAFF 843. SPEAR, p.327. COWAN, p.171.

NARRATIVE OF THE EXPEDITION OF AN AMERICAN SQUADRON TO THE CHINA SEAS AND JAPAN, PERFORMED IN THE YEARS 1852, 1853, AND 1854, UNDER THE COMMAND OF COMMODORE M.C. PERRY, UNITED STATES NAVY, BY ORDER OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES

Washington. 1856.. Three volumes. Ninety tinted lithographic plates, maps (some folding), and numerous in- text woodcut illustrations. Original cloth, stamped in gilt and blind; first and third volumes rebacked, original backstrips laid down; second volume recased. Old library stamp on each titlepage. Scattered light dampstaining and some foxing affecting margins of some plates in first volume. Some dampstaining in upper margins of preliminary leaves of first and second volumes. This copy contains the suppressed nude bathhouse plate opposite page 408 (first volume), which is not included in the list of illustrations and which is lacking from most copies. Overall just about very good. In 1852, Perry was appointed head of a naval expedition charged with inducing the Japanese government to establish diplomatic relations with the United States. In 1853 the Japanese were finally forced to accept a treaty demanding better treatment of shipwrecked seamen and which allowed American ships to dock at two Japanese ports to purchase fuel and supplies. "The most important result, however, was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan" - Hill. The lovely plates depict the country, Japanese natives, and their customs. "In this valuable scientific work the first successful attempt at producing a coloured lithograph, in imitation of drawing, is introduced" - Sabin. HILL 1332. SABIN 30958.
