POMARE IV, Queen of Tahiti (1813-1877)
1855. The first a small oblong 8vo, the second 8vo. Light soiling to the first, both with contemporary translations from the Polynesian into French in pencil beneath the letters. Item #404254 Two letters from Queen Pomare sent in 1855 and 1856, respectively, from Papeete, French Polynesia. Translation: 1) "Raita hello to you. Prepare some bread for Oriiane in the form of small cakes. That is all. Bye, Pomare ([...]) 2) Captain of Ortielerie (?) [sic], hello to you. The queen and her husband ask you and Madame to come to dine tonight at our house at five o'clock in the evening." Pomare the Fourth was the Queen of Tahiti from 1827 until her death in 1877. The first letter is likely addressed to her maid or servant. Pomare fought against French intervention in Tahiti in 1843, but ultimately came to rule under the French protectorate following the French-Tahitian War of 1843-47. French naval officials were installed in Pape'ete, Tahiti's capital; there was a high level of Polynesian overseas trade in the 1850s. It is likely that the second letter is a communication between Pomare and a foreign ship captain. Pomare had instituted a code of law to manage the "disease, drunkenness, and disorder" that came with foreign ship captains. Although captains found Pomare to be "demanding," they were nonetheless "required to pay her homage" and defer to her authority (Karen Stevenson, "Extraordinary Polynesian Women: Writing Their Stories," The Journal of the Polynesian Society, 2014, pp. 130).

Yvan, Melchior, Doctor
London: James Blackwood, 1855. First edition in English. Small 8vo (17 x 11 cm), pp.[iv], 368, [4, advertisements], frontispiece, 5 plates. A very good copy in contemporary green pebbled cloth, gilt. All edges gilt. Joints and spine slightly worn. Upper hinge discreetly reinforced. A few marks to text and plates. An account of Melchior Yvan's voyage through the Straits Settlements in 1844, en route to Macao, where he served Lagrené's embassy to China as surgeon and naturalist. The first two hundred and seventy pages describe the author's experiences and observations of Malacca, Singapore, and Penang. He mixed freely in Malay, Indian, Chinese, and European society, where his ignorance of English proved a handicap. The natural beauty of Penang moved him, while the state of the Portuguese Catholic hierarchy at Malacca depressed him. Singapore elicited Yvan's admiration; that a policy of free trade and press, "Liberty in everything, commercial, civil, and religious", had created a thriving mercantile city of some seventy-five thousand people in less than thirty years astonished him. He particularly noted the contrast between Spanish and Portuguese colonies, with their draconian policies, as in the Philippines, and the comparative laissez-faire prevalent in Singapore. The final ninety pages cover Macao. The plates include views of Singapore, Batavia, the Malacca Straits, Penang, and the author's pet orangutan, Tuan. Yvan first published his account as La Chine et la presqu'île malaise in 1850. He later became a politician, and his writings are reputed to have influenced Baudel … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACKGROUND: Connop Thirlwall (11 January 1797 – 27 July 1875) was an English bishop (in Wales) and historian. Though devoted to his parochial duties, he found time to begin his principal work, the History of Greece. This work was a commission from Dionysius Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia, and was originally intended to be condensed into two or three duodecimo volumes. The scale was enlarged, but Thirlwall always felt cramped. Compared with Grote's history it lacks enthusiasm for a definite political ideal and is written entirely from the standpoint of a scholar. It shows a more impartial treatment of the evidence, especially in respect of the aristocratic and absolute governments of Greece. For these reasons its popularity was not so immediate as that of Grote's work, but its substantial merits were later recognised. CONDITION: Conditions are Good+/Very Good. New frontis tissue. Light toning and scattered foxing to interior. Previous owner name of L F Gilmer, Savannah 1856 written on front free endpaper and on title page. Herman Melville
Good-Fair; Wear to edges, but mostly on the corners, of the boards. Binding is tight; both boards still attached to text block; no mildew or mold smell; cloth spine has become detached from the boards and it is missing about 1/3 (along top edge); colors to cloth boards is surprisingly bright for the age! Most copies have significant sun bleaching; usual minor toning/foxing to pages due to acidity of paper used in 19th c. Photos are of the actual book you will be receiving - please ask me any questions BEFORE purchasing -- thanks! One of Melville's scarcer titles -- did not receive good critical reception upon release -- one of the few titles that remained in publication during the author's lifetime for that reason. Pierre, or the Ambiguities by Herman Melville (1852/5) Scarcity compounded by Harpers warehouse fire in 1853 which destroyed most of the 1st state of the first edition; this is one of the 429 'reprinted' 1st editions from 1855, making it the second state (really replacements for the destroyed 1st state copies) and is still considered rare for that reason. Although the cloth spine is missing its upper 1/3 and is detached from the boards, the vibrant colors and solid / clean text block make it a very nice addition for the Melville collector. The spine can be carefully re-attached. Comes housed in Mylar sleeve (not pictured) Condition: Good/Fair (please see condition report, above) Shipping: via USPS Priority Mail; tracked and insured with delivery signature confirmation required Please visit my Ebay store for more rare books. Ettingshausen, C. Von and A Pokorny
Wien, Kaiserlich-Königlichen Hof- und Staatsdruckerei [1855-1856]. Folio nature-printed plates (each 56.5 x 39.5 cm, circa 43 x 30 cm for printed area). With very wide, uniform margins. This pair of matching plates (with Arum maculatum and A. italicum) is one of the most fantastic examples of nature printing, accompanied by very decorative botanical illustrations. Only nature printing can give a true 3D effect to a plate, and these are among the best ever made. The author and artist, Constantin Freiherr von Ettingshausen (1826-1897), was a professor of botany and major researcher of European fossil floras. He also had a great interest in nature printing, for its accuracy in transferring a real natural history object to an image on paper. Here, these interests were combined. The first plate with a single weak, diagonal fold in the upper right corner. Otherwise the plates are in very good condition, with only a few small and marginal imperfections, never disturbing the printed area. The complete work consisted of five folio atlases with over 500 plates. According to Staffleu and Cowan: "the most important work produced by nature printing ever published". Even individual plates, such as these, are very rare. Fischer, 69; Staffleu and Cowan, 1723.
