Packer, Thomas
London: Stannard & Dixon, 1855. Very good overall. Impressive color lithographic map of up to the minute conditions of a naval battle at the end of the Crimean War, showing the Allied Fleet under Admiral Lyons arrayed at Kinburn Fort, and the mouth of the Dnieper or Kerson Bay, which is present day Ukraine. This battle, in which the British and French bombarded the Russian forts, is notable for the successful use by the French of ironclad ships, convincing contemporary navies to abandon wooden ships, and leading to the destruction of the forts in very short order. With the subhead "There are two forts commanding the mouth of the bay of Kerson & the entrance to the River Bug & Dnipier, in which are situate Nicolaieff & Kerson. The fortress of Kinburn surrendered after a bombardment by the Allies. The governor, 1700 prisoners, & 140 cannon. Fort Nicolaieff was evacuated & blown up by the Russians. The Allied fleet are now anchored in the Bay of Kerson & the mouth of the Dnipier." The Crimean War was one of the first wars for which the British public received day to day coverage of the action. Titles in English and French. 29 x 21 1/2". Slightly chipped upper and lower right side.

[VIEWS]. PARIS, [Edouard?], Adolphe BAYOT, Eugène CICÉRI, Antoine Léon MOREL FATTO.
Collection De Vinck 17202-17206, 17209, 17211-17221; WorldCat (4 copies). A rare lithographic print series commemorating the Battle of Kinburn (Kil-Bouroun) on the south bank of the Dnieper River near the Crimea. On 17 October 1855, during the Crimean War, the French and British navies attacked the Russian outpost there with a fleet of ironclad ships, destroying the fortifications within hours and suffering only light damage. This decisive success, seven years before the famous battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack in the American Civil War, heralded the demise of the traditional wooden warship. Though made from the land, mostly after the battle itself, nearly all show maritime scenes, with large and detailed depictions of the ironclad ships on the ice-bound river. They also show the ruined fortifications in great detail. With some marginal tears repaired but still in very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot. The portfolio is also very good, with a couple small water stains on the silk of the front board. A lovely series of views of ironclad ships on the frozen Dnieper River during the Crimean War.

SCRAPBOOK - Baroness DARU.
[France, 1855. Oblong album (257 x 333 mm). [55] leaves of thick paper including sheets of blue, green and brown paper, on the rectos and some versos of which are carefully mounted approximately 425 cut-out illustrations from French books and periodicals, most from the 1830s and 1840s (but with 5 eighteenth-century illustrations or vignettes), including three clippings mounted on the moiré front free endleaf; several illustrations are printed on colored paper, two are hand-colored, three are ?offset proofs on India paper (one with small tear); with two loose unsigned drawings: a watercolor of a landscape, and a pencil drawing of a reclining deer. A few clippings partly detached from mount, overall in fine condition. Binding of dark violet crushed morocco, sides with elaborate gold-blocked foliate and arabesque border and central arabesque and pointillé cartouche, within which the gothic letters "E. F." are stamped on the upper cover, smooth spine gold-tooled to a similar design, white moiré endleaves, gilt edges (a few scratches, upper joint split, lower joint rubbed). Provenance: Given by the Baroness Daru to Eugène Hippolyte Forest, with presentation inscription mounted on verso of front free endleaf, "A Monsieur Eugène Forest, souvenir de Madme la Bonne Daru", with his supra-libros, and the initials E.F. inscribed in pencil on the lowermost clipping of the opening page (showing a horned devil-like creature holding a sheet).*** A scrapbook of wood-engraved, steel-engraved, and a few lithographed illustrations and vignettes fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LEAR, Edward.]
No imprint, but London. T. Mclean. No date , but 1855. PROOF COPY OR VERY EARLY ISSUE OF LEAR'S NONSENSE BOOK. Title and 72 leaves, each printed by lithography on one side only. Original pictorial semi-stiff covers, cloth-backed. Oblong octavo. Second edition. The limericks to both variants of 'There was an Old Man of The West' reversed, indicating an early issue. The pictorial front cover lacking the publication details, also the words, 'New Edition', but having the word 'to' for seemingly no good reason after the 'of' in the title. Vivien Noakes catalogued a proof copy for the exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1985, but there is no mention in her cataloguing of variations to the cover. Book bumped at outer corners with slight loss to lower outer corner of front cover; alignment of printing to verse of 'There was an old man of Cape Horn' poor; last line of 'There was an old man of Calcutta' partly cropped'; some marking; else a very good copy of an extremely rare issue - very possibly a proof.First published in 1846 in two volumes, only the first two editions were printed by lithography, wood-engraving being preferred for the third and subsequent editions. Both of the first two editions were small, possibly as few as 250 - 500 copies being printed. Even the third edition only numbered 1000 copies. The binding method for the first two editions was by the 'perfect' or gutta-percha method, and copies are often found in a distressed state, most lacking their original bindings and usually incomplete. The first two lithographed editions (the first edition and this, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Linforth, James, editor
Liverpool, 1855. viii,120pp. plus folding map, thirty plates, and woodcuts in text after Frederick H. Piercy. Large quarto. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, gilt leather label. Map slightly trimmed, costing the top borderline in the map. Portraits of Willard Richards and John Taylor neatly excised from their old plate and mounted onto new paper. Very faint tideline barely visible on lower edge of final forty pages and final fifteen plates. The images themselves are generally clean and unblemished. Very good. One of the most important publications devoted to the Mormon emigration, and a landmark in the artistic depiction of western scenes. The plates are after illustrations by Frederick Piercy. "This elaborately prepared and illustrated book was published as a monument to the Mormon emigration to Utah, and as a means of attracting further emigrants. Piercy made a special trip to America [in 1853] to make sketches for the plates, which are some of the best western views of the period" - Streeter. The outstanding views show New Orleans, Natchez, Vicksburg, Nauvoo, Council Bluffs, Laramie, Fort Bridger, and Scott's Bluff. "...One of the most elaborately and beautifully illustrated of western books" - Howes. "...One of the basic sources of illustrated Western Americana of the period" - Taft. "One of the most illuminating maps of the West to appear during 1855...it shows Utah in all its glory. This is not only an important map in the history of Mormons, but is in every sense an important map in the history of the West, giving as it does a carefully drawn p … [Click Below for Full Description]
