POMARE IV, Queen of Tahiti (1813-1877)
The first a small oblong 8vo, the second 8vo. Light soiling to the first, both with contemporary translations from the Polynesian into French in pencil beneath the letters. Item #404254 Two letters from Queen Pomare sent in 1855 and 1856, respectively, from Papeete, French Polynesia. Translation: 1) "Raita hello to you. Prepare some bread for Oriiane in the form of small cakes. That is all. Bye, Pomare ([...]) 2) Captain of Ortielerie (?) [sic], hello to you. The queen and her husband ask you and Madame to come to dine tonight at our house at five o'clock in the evening." Pomare the Fourth was the Queen of Tahiti from 1827 until her death in 1877. The first letter is likely addressed to her maid or servant. Pomare fought against French intervention in Tahiti in 1843, but ultimately came to rule under the French protectorate following the French-Tahitian War of 1843-47. French naval officials were installed in Pape'ete, Tahiti's capital; there was a high level of Polynesian overseas trade in the 1850s. It is likely that the second letter is a communication between Pomare and a foreign ship captain. Pomare had instituted a code of law to manage the "disease, drunkenness, and disorder" that came with foreign ship captains. Although captains found Pomare to be "demanding," they were nonetheless "required to pay her homage" and defer to her authority (Karen Stevenson, "Extraordinary Polynesian Women: Writing Their Stories," The Journal of the Polynesian Society, 2014, pp. 130).

Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek.

Hardwich, T. Frederick.
London: John Churchill, 1855. First edition. 12mo., xvi, 384 pp., errata, figures in text. Publisher's gilt and blind-embossed cloth. There is a short closed tear on the half-title page with no loss, and a private library stamp on the front free endpaper and blank margin of the preface. The rear hinge is a tiny bit weak; a near fine copy. INSCRIBED "with the author's compts" to Dr. A [Arthur] Farre, with his engraved armorial bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. First published in 1855, this manual quickly became the standard for its time. According to Eder "It is particularly valuable because he treated photo-chemistry exhaustively and gave an original and very useful method for the production of photographic collodion cotton..." Sipley, in PHOTOGRAPHY'S GREAT INVENTORS calls this "...the first manual of photo-chemistry." It is actually the first manual of photographic chemistry in the English language. Dr. Arthur Farre was a Fellow of the Royal Society, a prominent obstetrician and made "physician extraordinary" to The Queen. OCLC locates ten copies. Gernsheim - INCUNABULA OF BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHIC LITERATURE 1839 - 1875, No. 739 incorrectly lists the first edition as having 530 pp. The Harry Ransom Center, the repository of the Gernsheim Collection, shows the first edition of 1855 as having 384 pp. (as does ours) and no copies among their numerous editions having 530 pp. Roosens and Salu No. 1836 follows the same pagination mistake as Gernsheim.

Boston: Damrell & Moore, printers, 1855. 19.8cm. 96pp. 3 full-page woodcuts, illus. in text. Original front pictorial wrapper (lacking back wrapper), bound in modern cloth. Some tears with old repairs, particularly to the last leaf, but a respectable copy of a rare book. First Edition. A narrative journal, with dated entries, of the author's voyage aboard the Fall River whaling bark Aerial, 1851-1852, on the Atlantic grounds. "Whalemen, as a class, have been too long neglected. Too many ships that float are in reality prison-ships; their crews for the time being perfect slaves. Our only endeavor will be to exhibit with a running pen, some features of the every-day life and moral conditions of the whaleman." pp 8-9. Although the moral ton is inescapable, the work is not simply a moral tract, but a journal of the cruise, with details of the voyage and of the business of whaling. [Melville, Herman]
New York: G.P. Putnam & Col, 1854-1855. Scarce. The first appearance of Israel Potter, Melville's novel about the Revolutionary War, was published in six parts in Putnam's Magazine between July 1854 - March 1855. It was published in book form in March 1855. Loosely based on a real person, Israel Potter recounts the life of a young American who fights in the Revolution, is captured at sea by the British Navy, and has a series of adventures in England involving King George III, Benjamin Franklin, John Paul Jones, and Ethan Allen. The work ends sadly, with Potter exiled in poverty in England for fifty years, finally returning to America shortly before his death. The book was a commercial failure in its time but garnered critical appreciation. Volume IV also includes Melville's "The Lightning-Rod Man." Both volumes are bound in the original green cloth with embossed designs to covers and gilt titling to spine. Volume IV is stained, bumped, and rubbed, with faded gilt design and titling to spine. Remnants of spine label, hole in back cover not affecting interior and small tears to joint. Ownership stamp of D.F. Tillinghast to front and rear pastedowns. Interior pages clean and bright with age darkening to some pages. Covers of Volume V have soiling and bumping. Foxing to endpapers and occasional light foxing to text pages but otherwise clean and bright. Overall in very good condition. Volume IV: 672 pages; Volume V: 668 pages. LIT/.

FORT KEARNY, Nebraska
[Near Fort Kearny, 1855. Two sheets (10 x 8½ and 9¾ x 10½ inches). Earlier map with a few minor paper losses, not affecting text or image; backed with linen. Newer map with old fold lines and some minor soiling. A nice pair of manuscript maps of the original Fort Kearny site on the Missouri River in Indian Territory (present-day Nebraska), just north of Table Creek. The original site was scouted by Col. Stephen W. Kearny and Capt. Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, in 1838, and Fort Kearny was erected as a way-point for westward-bound settlers along the Oregon Trail. The site was deemed irrelevant, however, since most settlers who took the Trail west bypassed the Fort, so, in 1846 a new Fort Kearny was erected along the Platte River one hundred miles to the west. The first map shows the area as scouted by Stephen W. Kearny and Nathan Boone; it is labeled "To accompany Report of Colo. Kearny and Cap. Boone of 25th April 1838," although it probably dates to 1855. The map shows several miles along the Missouri River, including McPherson's Trading House to the north and the timber reserve for the fort directly across the river. Most interestingly, it shows and old northern border of Missouri that would later be challenged successfully by Iowa. Thus, the site now lies across from Iowa, not Missouri. The second map, drawn in 1855, is outlined in colour and shows detail of the timber reserve across the river from the fort. While the earlier map delineated this with a simple line, on the present map the area is divided into townships and ranges, now an important … [Click Below for Full Description]

Melville, Herman
New York: Dix & Edwards, 1855. Hardcover. Very scarce. The first appearance of Melville's novella, Benito Cereno, a fictionalized account of a revolt on a Spanish slave ship captained by Cereno. It was published anonymously in the magazine in three parts. A revised version of the story was included in his first and only short story collection, The Piazza Tales, published in the United States in May 1856 and in England that June. It was never reprinted during Melville's lifetime. This novella has often been considered one of Melville's finest achievements. It appears in the magazine on pages 353-367, 459-471, and 633-644. Bound in publisher's original green cloth with embossed design and gilt titling to spine. Minor wear to edges of boards, chipping to cloth along spine ends, fading to spine and edges of boards, and a few discolored spots to spine and boards. Ex-library marking that has been covered over to foot of spine, library call number stamped to several internal page margins, and previous ownership stamp to both front and rear pastedowns. No other ex-library markings. There is a one inch split to the bottom of the front hinge. Interior pages are generally clean, with occasional foxing, smudge marks, small spots of soiling, and browning. Split after title page, but binding remains secure. Otherwise very good condition. 6 x 9.5 inches. 668 pages. LIT/071118. Very Good.

JAMES (George Payne Rainsford,1799-1860, Novelist & Poet)
Fine Autograph Letter Signed to "My dear Hutchins" saying that he has been "waiting anxiously to hear from you respecting the manuscripts which I sent over and you received. Whatever delay may take place in Mr Newby's receiving it - if not occurring by any defect upon my side - must not of course, count against me, either in the date of his bills or the period of presenting the next manuscript. Both must be reckoned from the time when you called upon or sent it to him. The terms of our agreement are precise. The bills must of course be sent to me as they are always payable to my order and would be discounted without my endorsement. I cannot help thinking that one of my letters to you must have miscarried as is so frequently the case here. Were I in Norfolk I could tell you all I have written for all are registered the moment they are posted; but in travelling I cannot take such precautions and if I happen not to have stamps to put on the letter but prepay it in money every now and then the postmaster pockets the money and the letter never goes. We are now here staying with Walter at the most miserable backwood town you ever saw. The meat is so tough that Fanny cannot digest it at all and if it were not for Walter's gun and mine and our fishing rods, she would actually starve. No eggs, no fowls, no mutton, nothing but beef steaks as hard as iron except when we bring in game. However the expence of being starved here is not much for this place is as cheap as Norfolk is dear. We pay two shillings a day for board and lodging. Poor Norfolk is in the most awful State … [Click Below for Full Description]
