Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah.

1855-1856. 1855 - First edition. 3 volumes, each with a frontispiece in colour, other plates, and a number of maps and plans (some folding). 8vo.19th century half red morocco over marbled boards, spines gilt, five raised bands. pp. xiv, 388; iv, 426; x, 448, London, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, This is perhaps the most famous of Burton's many travel books. The author's original plan as laid before the Royal Geographical Society had been to explore the interior of Arabia. However, this ambitious project was thwarted by the East India Company's refusal to allow Burton the three years leave he needed. The year he was given in lieu ?to enable him to pursue his Arabic studies? afforded Burton the opportunity to travel in disguise initially as a Persian and subsequently as a Pathan to Medina and to Meccah, thereby becoming the first English Christian to enter the holy city as a Mohamedan pilgrim. ?The actual pilgrimage began with a journey on camel-back from Cairo to Suez. Then followed twelve days in a pilgrim ship on the Red Sea from Suez to Yambu, the port of El-Medinah. So far the only risk was from detection by his companions. Now came the dangers of the inland road, infested by Bedawin robbers. The journey from Yambu to El-Medinah, thence to Meccah, and finally to the sea again at Jeddah, occupied altogether from 17 July to 23 September, including some days spent in rest, and many more in devotional exercises. From Jeddah Burton returned to Egypt in a British steamer, intending to start afresh for the interior of Arabia via Muwaylah. But this second project was frustrated by ill-health, which kept him in Egypt until his period of furlough was exhausted. The manuscript. was sent home from India, and seen through the press by a friend in England. It is deservedly the most popular of Burton's books, having passed through four editions. As a story of bold adventure, and as lifting a veil from the unknown, its interest will never fade? (DNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE HOLY LAND, SYRIA, IDUMEA, ARABIA, EGYPT & NUBIA. / AFTER LITHOGRAPHS BY LOUIS HAGHE FROM DRAWINGS MADE ON THE SPOT

London: Day & Son, 1855. First Quarto Edition. Hardcover. Some foxing, heaviest on the titles and initial leaves, occasionally to the margins of the plates but rarely affecting the images. Public library bookplate with small ink stamps at various places throughout, sometimes in the margins of the plates but never on the images. Hinges repaired with new paste-downs, general scuffing and wear along spine edges but bindings still tight. Very Good. With Historical Descriptions by The Revd. George Croly. Six quarto (8-1/4" x 12") volumes bound in three in later half red morocco leather with matching corners and gilt-lettered and decorated spines. Complete with 250 tinted lithographs including the frontispiece portrait of David Roberts in the first volume, a frontispiece of the temple at Abu Simbel and the map of his tour in the second, as well as all 6 lithographed title pages and print lists at the opening of each volume. In 1838 Roberts traveled to Egypt, which had grown popular both as a travel destination for the adventurous antiquarian, and as the subject of highly valued artworks. The journey became an extensive tour of the region, including Jerusalem, Petra (in modern Jordan), Giza, Thebes and various sites along the Nile. During this trip, he constantly sketched stunning views of colossal ruins, ancient temples of the Egyptian and Persian empires, and particularly biblical sites in and around Jerusalem. His sketches also depicted the local customs, clothes and contemporary dwellings, markets and palaces, and the third published volume (the first half of the second volume in this set) includes a scene depicting his meeting with Muhammad Ali Pasha in Alexandria, which he did not sketch at the time but is reputed to have produced from memory. Upon his return to Britain, after he was fêted by high society in Scotland, he worked with the engraver Louis Haghe to produce the collection in book form, funded by subscriber which he personally solicited. Thanks to the popularity of the subject matter, and the relative absence of British art on the same subject, he was quite successful, with Queen Victoria as subscriber number one (her large paper folio copy is still in the Royal Collection.) Louis Haghe, along with William Day, was a Lithographer to the Queen and innovator in the process of colour lithography, and the lithographs in this volume benefit from his skill.

History of the Indian Tribes of North America

1855 - MCKENNEY, Thomas and HALL, James. History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Philadelphia: D. Rice and A.N. Hart, 1855. Three volumes. Royal octavo, original deluxe full brown morocco, decorative blind-stamped cover-borders, raised bands, all edges gilt. $32,000.Early octavo edition of one of the most recognized and desirable American color plate books produced in the 19th century, illustrated with 120 splendid fully hand-colored lithographic plates by J.T. Bowen after Charles Bird King's original oil paintings, "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed" (Howes). Handsome in publisher's deluxe morocco. In commissioning the Indian Tribes of North America, McKenney aimed to educate the American public about these greatly exotic warriors and chiefs and to preserve them for posterity in a series of beautiful portraits. Most of the original oil portraits were painted from life in studio of Charles Bird King, to whom McKenney brought many of the subjects. The rest were copied from watercolors executed in the field by a young frontier artist named James Otto Lewis. The finished portraits resided in the Smithsonian until 1865, when fire consumed the institution and destroyed most of the paintings. As a result, the folio and octavo editions are particularly vital in their "faithful recording of the features and dress of celebrated American Indians who lived and died long before the age of photography" (McKenney-Hall Portrait Gallery, 23). First published in folio 1836-44 and in octavo 1848-50. Howes M129. Field 992. See Sabin 43411. Occasional faint spotting to interiors; plates generally clean, hand-coloring bright. Some skillful color restoration to extremities of publisher's deluxe morocco. An extremely good set in the publisher's desirable deluxe morocco bindings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Holy Land

1855 - ROBERTS, David. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia. London: Day & Son, 1855-56. Six volumes in three. Quarto, contemporary full brown blind-stamped morocco sympathetically rebacked, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $18,000.First quarto edition of this monumental early visual record of the Middle East by the first Westerner permitted to enter sacred sites, with 250 magnificent tinted lithographs.Inquisitive Western minds first glimpsed the mysteries of Egypt and the Middle East in detail through David Roberts' folio-sized Holy Land, issued in 41 parts from 1842 to 1849 and containing 250 full-page hand-colored lithographs produced from his magnificent, on-site drawings. Roberts was the first Westerner to be granted permission to enter whichever sacred mosque or monument he desired. His images of these sacred places established what many people even today envision as the aura of Egypt and the Holy Land. "Roberts' Holy Land has a world-wide reputation; nothing of a similar character has ever been produced that can bear a comparison with it" (Ran, 6). Louis Haghe, considered the foremost lithographer of his time, transferred the exquisitely detailed drawings to stone. This is the first quarto edition of 1855-56, containing all 250 lithographic plates contained in the folio edition, including a frontispiece portrait of Roberts, six pictorial title pages, and two engraved maps. Undoubtedly the most famous of these is Plate 240, the great sphinx, still commonly reproduced in poster art. A considerable number of plates are printed in two tints; plates 213 and 240 are printed in three. See Abbey Travel 385, 388; Tooley 401. Light marginal edge-wear to plates 180-82. Occasional foxing affecting versos of plates only, small and faint marginal dampstain along gutter in Volume VI, images quite clean and fine. Light expert restoration to original morocco boards. A very good set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
